In this study it has been demonstrated that mixtures of two solid drugs, ibuprofen and methyl nicotinate, with different but complementary pharmacological activities and which exist as a single liquid phase over a wide composition range at skin temperature, can be formulated as o/w emulsions without the use of an additional hydrophobic carrier. These novel dual drug systems provided significantly enhanced in vitro penetration rates through a model lipophilic barrier membrane compared to conventional individual formulations of each active. Thus, for ibuprofen, drug penetration flux enhancements of three- and 10-fold were observed when compared to an aqueous ibuprofen suspension and a commercial alcohol-based ibuprofen formulation, respectively. Methyl nicotinate penetration rates were shown to be similar for aqueous gels and emulsified systems. Mechanisms explaining these observations are proposed. Novel dual drug formulations of ibuprofen and methyl nicotinate, formulated within the liquid range at skin temperature, were investigated by oscillatory rheology and texture profile analysis. demonstrating the effects of drug and viscosity enhancer concentrations, and disperse phase type upon the rheological, mechanical and drug penetration properties of these systems. Two manganese steels were investigated: Fe-19.7%Mn (VM339A) and Fe-19.7%Mn stabilized with 0.056%C, 0.19%Ti and 0.083%Al (VM339B). The toughness of VM339A was higher than VM339B, but VM339B had higher hardness. Tempering does not affect the toughness of the alloys. SEM images of the fracture surface for both the alloys revealed ductile fractures. A further alloy with a lower manganese content, Fe-8.46%Mn-0.24%Nb-0.038%C, and thus even lower cost than the conventional 3.5Ni cryogenic steel, was tested for its impact toughness after heat treatment at 600°C, giving promising results.

The influence of ultrasound on the percutaneous absorption of three nicotinate esters was investigated in 10 healthy volunteers in a double-blind placebo controlled crossover clinical trial. Using a specially designed experimental protocol, the effect of continuous output ultrasound (at frequency 3.0 MHz and intensity 1.0 W/cm2 for 5 min) on the percutaneous absorption of methyl, ethyl, and hexyl nicotinates, from gel bases, was investigated. A placebo control, involving massage with each of the gels, without ultrasound for 5 min, was also incorporated. The pharmacodynamic parameter of vasodilation caused by the nicotinates was used to monitor the percutaneous absorption of the drugs. Laser Doppler velocimetry, a noninvasive optical technique, was used to measure vasodilation of the cutaneous vessels within the treatment site. Ultrasound treatment led to enhanced vasodilator response to the nicotinates, therefore indicating an enhancement of their percutaneous absorption. These agents may prove to be useful compounds in examination of the mechanism of action of phonophoresis.

By using a fast reaction technique which employs H2S gas as a fast-reacting chemical repair agent, it is possible to measure the competition kinetics between chemical repair reactions and oxygen fixation reactions in model DNA and cellular systems. In plasmid pBR322 DNA irradiated with electrons, we have compared the oxygen fixation reactions of the free radical precursors that lead to the production of single-strand (SSBs) and double-strand breaks (DSBs). For the oxygen-dependent fixation of radical damage leading to SSBs, a second-order rate constant of 2.3 x 10(8) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1) was obtained compared to 8.9 x 10(7) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1) for DSBs. The difference is in general agreement with predictions from a multiple-radical model where the precursor of a DSB originates from two radicals. The fixation of this precursor by oxygen will require both radicals to be fixed for the DSB to be formed, which will have slower kinetics than that of single free-radical precursors of SSBs. Mounting accuracy of satellite payload and
ADCS (attitude determination and control subsystem) seats
is one of the requirements to achieve the satellite mission
with satisfactory performance. Deviation of the position of
the mounting seat for Multi-Band-Earth-Imager (MBEI) is
caused by cracks in the plate of the basis unit and bracket
for attachment of MBEI. These cracks were detected during
inspection of the satellite strength mock-up after vibration
testing for air transportation phase. Most probable reason of
the cracking is fatigue damage as strength mock-up
structure was subjected to prolonged vibration loading
during various loading cases. Total vibration duration
during testing is about 56 hours. In order to study the
cracking reasons, finite element modeling of the structural
parts of the basis unit including MBEI bracket and
instrument MBEI is subjected to harmonic response to
simulate vibration loading for the case of air transportation.
Numerical results are compared with the experimental ones,
and mechanical design of the basis-plate unit is modified

Novice and expert jugglers employ different visuomotor strategies: whereas novices look at the balls around their zeniths, experts tend to fixate their gaze at a central location within the pattern (so-called gaze-through). A gaze-through strategy may reflect visuomotor parsimony, i.e., the use of simpler visuomotor (oculomotor and/or attentional) strategies as afforded by superior tossing accuracy and error corrections. In addition, the more stable gaze during a gaze-through strategy may result in more accurate movement planning by providing a stable base for gaze-centered neural coding of ball motion and movement plans or for shifts in attention. To determine whether a stable gaze might indeed have such beneficial effects on juggling, we examined juggling variability during 3-ball cascade juggling with and without constrained gaze fixation (at various depths) in expert performers (n = 5). Novice jugglers were included (n = 5) for comparison, even though our predictions pertained specifically to expert juggling. We indeed observed that experts, but not novices, juggled significantly less variable when fixating, compared to unconstrained viewing. Thus, while visuomotor parsimony might still contribute to the emergence of a gaze-through strategy, this study highlights an additional role for improved movement planning. This role may be engendered by gaze-centered coding and/or attentional control mechanisms in the brain.
