Smoke free restaurant ordinance, compliance with the regulation to reduce exposure to environmental tobacco smoke while dining at local restaurants in San Antonio, Texas

This study is a secondary analysis of a survey developed by Dr. Jimmy Perkins and administered by San Antonio/Bexar County Metropolitan Health District. The survey was developed subsequent to the implementation of the city smoking ordinance effective January 1, 2004. The survey had a multi-purpose plan to establish the number of restaurants having smoke free status prior to and following the ordinance, determine compliance as it relates to a necessary smoking section and proper signage, and expose the rationale for restaurants to become smoke free. The data resulting from the survey was presented to the San Antonio/Bexar County Metropolitan Health District. The summary presented the types of establishments surveyed, smoking status of the establishment, reasons for the establishment becoming smoke free, compliance with smoking sections, compliance with signage requirements, awareness of ordinance, and chain status of the establishment. ^ The results of this study display the relationships among the variables previously mentioned. The following relationships have been examined and the outcomes have determined whether each is significant. After careful analysis, knowledge translates into compliance with signage regulations, which then translate into ordinance compliance. Size does matter as it relates to an establishment's number of employees and seating capacity. The smaller the establishment the more likely the establishment is to have become smoke free before the ordinance went into effect. Restaurants, rather than fast food establishments most commonly cited their reason for becoming smoke free was to comply with the ordinance and only ten percent of restaurants gave policy as the main reason for becoming smoke free. ^ This study is important for public health because the negative health effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) are still an overwhelming problem in the United States (3). ETS is a Known Human Group A Carcinogen (5). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has estimated that around 3,000 non-smoking Americans die every year from lung cancer caused by ETS (6). This information illustrates the importance of providing smoke free establishments, especially to non-smoking patrons. ^

El presente trabajo muestra la analogía bonaventuriana en términos de distancia y espejo, señalando las instancias argumentativas a través de las cuales se llega al concepto de naturaleza entendido como expresión de Dios. Pero además, esta similitudo, a diferencia de la imagen, es cualidad pura común a todos los seres, y designa un modo eminente de participación en la perfección divina, que se imprime en un despliegue trinitario ad intra (Logos) a la vez que se expresa en la creación ad extra. Estos momentos metafísicos de impressio-expressio conforman la propia realidad divina y la posibilidad de acceso a ella por parte de la naturaleza participada. En la Distinción 25 de su Comentario a las Sentencias de Pedro Lombardo, Buenaventura hará uso de un concepto de analogía propio para explicar la relación entre Persona-divina y persona-creatura, en un ámbito ante todo metafísico que sobrepasa los aspectos preteológico y cosmológico. Por ello, además de permitirnos esclarecer la diferencia entre naturaleza y persona-creatura, la importancia de esta analogía planteada por Buenaventura radica en que proporciona una respuesta particular a la oposición naturaleza-Dios, en la que la diferencia no significa exclusión, sino, maravillosa concordia y harmonía".

Assessing the identity of the variety 'Pedro Giménez' grown in Argentina through the use of microsatellite markers

Pedro Giménez' is a white criolla variety cropped in Argentina, mainly in Mendoza and San Juan, being the most planted white variety destined for wine making in the country. Its origin remains unknown, as well as its relationship with Spanish variety 'Pedro Ximénez', mostly grown in Jerez, Spain. Previous works have probed that most of Criollas varieties existing in America at the moment, are the offspring of 'Muscat of Alexandria' x 'Criolla Chica'. The aim of the present work was to compare 'Pedro Giménez' with the Spanish variety 'Pedro Ximénez', and to establish its degree of relatedness to 'Muscat of Alexandria' and 'Criolla Chica'. Therefore we used a set of 18 nuclear SSR loci and 3 chloroplast SSR loci. 'Pedro Giménez' shared only 38% of the alleles under analysis with 'Pedro Ximénez', indicating that they are indeed two different varieties. In all 18 polymorphic nuclear SSR loci 'Pedro Giménez' shared 50% of its alleles with 'Muscat of Alexandria', while the other 50% of the alleles present in 'Pedro Giménez' were also present in 'Criolla Chica'. This data, along with those from the chloroplast SSR analysis, strongly suggest that 'Pedro Giménez' is the progeny of 'Muscat of Alexandria' x 'Criolla Chica', being the latest one the most likely female progenitor.

Análisis estadístico de los presupuestos municipales 2004-2013 de San Rafael y encuesta de opinión

El objetivo principal de este trabajo de investigación es analizar las relaciones entre los recursos y gastos del municipio de San Rafael y aplicar herramientas estadísticas para explicar esas relaciones y así interpretar las más importantes. Otro incentivo de esta investigación fue presuponer una gran desinformación entre los ciudadanos sobre esta temática. Esto motivó la realización de encuestas de opinión al respecto. Aquí, aplicamos en forma conjunta dos temas de nuestra carrera sumamente importantes como la hacienda pública y la estadística, intentando dar una visión objetiva a un tema cotidiano como son los presupuestos municipales. Dado que nuestro trabajo es de tipo exploratorio no partimos de una hipótesis concreta a probar. Concluido el trabajo de exploración sobre los presupuestos municipales, se intentará describir el conocimiento de la población acerca de los mismos y las opiniones sobre la utilización de éstos. Nuestra investigación ha sido realizada en base a dos tipos de fuentes de datos. Una fuente secundaria suministrada por el Municipio de San Rafael. Sobre dichos datos realizamos gráficos y obtuvimos medidas descriptivas. Y finalmente una fuente primaria, a través de las encuestas diseñadas y realizadas por nosotros a los ciudadanos, para la posterior aplicación de herramientas estadísticas apropiadas.
