It is well known that experimental data, coming from solar and atmospheric neutrino detectors and also from experiments which look for neutrino oscillations. strongly suggest that neutrinos must have a mass different from zero. However at least the solar and/or the atmospheric neutrino data can be related to new flavor changing interactions beyond the standard model instead to the finite mass of neutrinos. This new physics may induce i) extra effects in neutrino-matter interactions, ii) CP violation in pion and lepton decays and, iii) muonium to antimuonium transition. We give two examples of models in which all those effects arise even with strictly massless neutrinos: the 331 model and multi-Higgs doublet extension of the standard model (mHDM) with flavor changing neutral currents in the charged lepton sector. It means that in this kind of models if neutrino masses were eventually needed, they will be independent of the parameters of the new interactions.

The low-energy scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by ortho Ps has been studied in a full quantum mechanical coupled-channel approach. In the singlet channel (total spin s(T) = 0) we find S- and P-wave resonances at 3.35 eV (width 0.02 eV) and 5.05 eV (width 0.04 eV), respectively, and a binding of 0.43 eV of Ps(2). The scattering length for s(T) = 0 is 3.95 Angstrom and for s(T) = 2 is 0.83 Angstrom. The small s(T) = 2 scattering length makes the spin-polarized ortho Ps atoms an almost noninteracting ideal gas which may undergo Bose-Einstein condensation. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The dynamics of a nonconservative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for trapped atomic systems with attractive two-body interaction is numerically investigated, considering wide variations of the nonconservative parameters, related to atomic feeding and dissipation. We study the possible limitations of the mean-field description for an atomic condensate with attractive two-body interaction, by defining the parameter regions, where stable or unstable formation can be found. The present study is useful and timely considering the possibility of large variations of attractive two-body scattering lengths, which may be feasible in recent experiments.

We study and look for similarities between the response rates R-dS(a(0),Lambda) and R-SdS(a(0),Lambda,M) of a static scalar source with constant proper acceleration a(0) interacting with a massless, conformally coupled Klein-Gordon field (i) in de Sitter spacetime, in the Euclidean vacuum, which describes a thermal flux of radiation emanating from the de Sitter cosmological horizon and (ii) in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime, in the Gibbons-Hawking vacuum, which describes thermal fluxes of radiation emanating from both the hole and the cosmological horizons, respectively, where Lambda is the cosmological constant and M is the black hole mass. After performing the field quantization in each of the above spacetimes, we obtain the response rates at the tree level in terms of an infinite sum of zero-energy field modes possessing all possible angular momentum quantum numbers. In the case of de Sitter spacetime, this formula is worked out and a closed, analytical form is obtained. In the case of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime such a closed formula could not be obtained, and a numerical analysis is performed. We conclude, in particular, that R-dS(a(0),Lambda) and R-SdS(a(0),Lambda,M) do not coincide in general, but tend to each other when Lambda-->0 or a(0)-->infinity. Our results are also contrasted and shown to agree (in the proper limits) with related ones in the literature.

Models where the dark matter component of the Universe interacts with the dark energy field have been proposed as a solution to the cosmic coincidence problem, since in the attractor regime both dark energy and dark matter scale in the same way. In these models the mass of the cold dark matter particles is a function of the dark energy field responsible for the present acceleration of the Universe, and different scenarios can be parametrized by how the mass of the cold dark matter particles evolves with time. In this article we study the impact of a constant coupling delta between dark energy and dark matter on the determination of a redshift dependent dark energy equation of state w(DE)(z) and on the dark matter density today from SNIa data. We derive an analytical expression for the luminosity distance in this case. In particular, we show that the presence of such a coupling increases the tension between the cosmic microwave background data from the analysis of the shift parameter in models with constant w(DE) and SNIa data for realistic values of the present dark matter density fraction. Thus, an independent measurement of the present dark matter density can place constraints on models with interacting dark energy.

A measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in proton antiproton collisions at an interaction energy of root s=1.96 TeV is presented. This analysis uses 405 +/- 25 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Fully hadronic t (t) over bar decays with final states of six or more jets are separated from the multijet background using secondary vertex tagging and a neural network. The t (t) over bar cross section is measured as sigma(t (t) over bar)=4.5(-1.9)(+2.0)(stat)(-1.1)(+1.4)(syst)+/- 0.3(lumi) pb for a top quark mass of m(t)=175 GeV/c(2).

The interaction of different kinds of solitary waves of the Camassa-Holm equation is investigated. We consider soliton-soliton, soliton-cuspon and cuspon-cuspon interactions. The description of these solutions had previously been shown to be reducible to the solution of an algebraic equation. Here we give explicit examples, numerically solving these algebraic equations and plotting the corresponding solutions. Further, we show that the interaction is elastic and leads to a shift in the position of the solitons or cuspons. We give the analytical expressions for this shift and represent graphically the coupled soliton-cuspon, soliton-soliton and cuspon-cuspon interactions.

The effect of lepton transverse polarization in B-0-->D(-)l(+)nu(l), B+-->(D) over bar (0)l(+)nu(l) decays (l=tau,mu) is analyzed within the framework of the standard model in the leading order of heavy quark effective theory. It is shown that a nonzero transverse polarization appears due to the electromagnetic final state interaction. The diagrams with intermediate D,D* mesons contributing to the nonvanishing P-T are considered. Regarding only the contribution of these mesons, the values of the tau-lepton transverse polarization averaged over the physical region in the B-0-->D(-)tau(+)nu(l) and B+-->(D) over bar (0)tau(+)nu(l) decays are equal to 2.60x10(-3) and -1.59x10(-3), respectively. In the case of muon decay modes the values of [P-T] are equal to 2.97x10(-4) and -6.79x10(-4).

By using a nonholonomous-frame formulation of the general covariance principle, seen as an active version of the strong equivalence principle, an analysis of the gravitational coupling prescription in the presence of curvature and torsion is made. The Coupling prescription implied by this principle is found to be always equivalent to that of general relativity, a result that reinforces the completeness of this theory, as well as the teleparallel point of view according to which torsion does not represent additional degrees of freedom for gravity, but simply an alternative way of representing the gravitational field.

We study the Bose-Einstein condensation of an interacting gas with attractive interaction confined in a harmonic trap using a semiclassical two-fluid mean-field model. The condensed state is described by the converged numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By solving the system of coupled equations of this model iteratively we obtain the converged results for the temperature dependencies of the condensate fraction, chemical potential, and internal energy for the Bose-Einstein condensate of Li-7 atoms. We comment on the recent results [Phys. Rev. B 70, 235314 (2004)] showing the dispersion relations of single-particle and collective excitations in quantum wires in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI). We claim that those calculations performed in the absence of SOI, and used as a strong reference to the interacting case, are unlikely to be correct. We show the correct omega-q plane of the system in the absence of Rashba SOI.

We evaluate the cubic interaction term in the action of open bosonic string field theory for Schnabl's solution written in terms of Bernoulli numbers. This computation provides us with new evidence for the fact that the string field equation of motion is satisfied when it is contracted with the solution itself.
