Although technology can facilitate improvements in performance by allowing us to understand, monitor and evaluate performance, improvements must ultimately come from within the athlete. The first part of this article will focus on understanding how perception and action relate to performance from two different theoretical viewpoints. The first will be predominantly a cognitive or indirect approach that suggests that expertise and decision-making processes are mediated by athletes accruing large knowledge bases that are built up through practice and experience. The second, and alternative approach, will advocate a more 'direct' solution, where the athlete learns to 'tune' into the relevant information that is embedded in their relationship with the surrounding environment and unfolding action. The second part of the article will attempt to show how emerging virtual reality technology is revealing new evidence that helps us understand elite performance. Possibilities of how new types of training could be developed from this technology will also be discussed. © 2014 Crown Copyright.

To study perception and action, Gibson advocated that “the laboratory must be like life” (Gibson, 1979, p. 3). In other words, the interactive relationship between an organism and his/her envi- ronment must be maintained so that the behavior observed in an experimental context mirrors, as closely as possible, the behavior observed in a realistic sport setting. The concept of repre- sentative design introduced by Brunswik in 1956 emphasized the need to have experimental tasks that allow the player to pick up perceptual information that specifies a property of the environment-actor system (Araújo et al., 2005; see also Chapter 24). In this chapter we will provide a brief overview of the methodologies used to study perception and action in sport and present, in some detail, the opportunities new methodologies such as immersive, interactive vir- tual reality can offer researchers in sport expertise.

The nature and challenges of public sector leadership and management are examined in four case studies of project management in complex metropolitan environments. The cases selected by the authors as representative of contextual factors affecting decision-making processes and project outcomes. Drawing on recent theoretical work on complex leadership approaches (Uhl-Bein et al 2007, Hazy 2008, Lichtenstein & Plowman 2009), the authors assess leadership practices enacted and the circumstances that influence these practices. Leadership types theorized by Uhl-Bein et al (2007) are identified operating at different levels and across networks, with contextual factors outlined. The article concludes with a framework for leadership practice and management identifying network facilitation and complexity friendly tools as a practice within complex public sector systems.

This paper presents a method for rational behaviour recognition that combines vision-based pose estimation with knowledge modeling and reasoning. The proposed method consists of two stages. First, RGB-D images are used in the estimation of the body postures. Then, estimated actions are evaluated to verify that they make sense. This method requires rational behaviour to be exhibited. To comply with this requirement, this work proposes a rational RGB-D dataset with two types of sequences, some for training and some for testing. Preliminary results show the addition of knowledge modeling and reasoning leads to a significant increase of recognition accuracy when compared to a system based only on computer vision.

In this article, child sexual abuse in low-income settings is reviewed, including the extent of the problem, the way children present, and how they should be managed. Liaising with other agencies, training in all aspects of sexual abuse and creating an environment that is conducive to good care by all groups involved is essential. Technical details of medical examination are not covered as appropriate guidelines are accessible.

Gait disturbances are a common feature of Parkinson’s disease, one of the most severe being freezing of gait. Sensory cueing is a common method used to facilitate stepping in people with Parkinson’s. Recent work has shown that, compared to walking to a metronome, Parkinson’s patients without freezing of gait (nFOG) showed reduced gait variability when imitating recorded sounds of footsteps made on gravel. However, it is not known if these benefits are realised through the continuity of the acoustic information or the action-relevance. Furthermore, no study has examined if these benefits extend to PD with freezing of gait. We prepared four different auditory cues (varying in action-relevance and acoustic continuity) and asked 19 Parkinson’s patients (10 nFOG, 9 with freezing of gait (FOG)) to step in place to each cue. Results showed a superiority of action-relevant cues (regardless of cue-continuity) for inducing reductions in Step coefficient of variation (CV). Acoustic continuity was associated with a significant reduction in Swing CV. Neither cue-continuity nor action-relevance was independently sufficient to increase the time spent stepping before freezing. However, combining both attributes in the same cue did yield significant improvements. This study demonstrates the potential of using action-sounds as sensory cues for Parkinson’s patients with freezing of gait. We suggest that the improvements shown might be considered audio-motor ‘priming’ (i.e., listening to the sounds of footsteps will engage sensorimotor circuitry relevant to the production of that same action, thus effectively bypassing the defective basal ganglia).

The practical knowledge has characteristics of a process with peculiar idiosyncrasies that require disruption with preconceived ideas, dialogue, negotiation and joint action. The knowledge underlying remains unclear despite of being what informs decision making. It is academia’s responsibility to unveil and nominate knowledge and that is the reason why we conducted two studies with clinical nurses. The aim is to understand the social representation that nurses make of their knowledge about nursing and analyze their clinical practices. In one of the studies, based on the theoretical-methodological referential of social representations, we used the technique of free association of words with the stimulus “knowledge in nursing”. In another study, developed within a naturalistic context and under the “Grounded Theory” referential, we used non-participative observation and explanatory interviews. From the first study we identified the structure of social representations of knowledge in nursing, from which emerged the central core constituted by four elements (Investigation, Wisdom, help Relation, Competence) and a second periphery with one element (Reflection). With the second study we identified that decisions are made within a dynamic, systematic and continuous process of diagnostic evaluation and clinical intervention using the various types of knowledge (e.g. clinic, experiential, scientific, personal). We concluded that the various types of knowledge in nursing, represented by the expressions mentioned above, are systematically and creatively mobilized within the dynamic process of diagnostic evaluation and clinical intervention. It is therefore important to unveil and nominate the different knowledge implicit in the clinical practice and Academia should be responsible for that task.

A emergência de uma nova Sociedade baseada na Informação e no Conhecimento despoletou transformações pedagógicas profundas nas instituições de Ensino Superior. Esta agenda para a inovação, no sentido de um ensino mais centrado nos alunos e no desenvolvimento de competências, tem exigido um esforço acrescido de toda a comunidade académica e, sobretudo, por parte dos professores universitários. Num contexto de recetividade para a mudança, mas com dificuldade de operacionalização da mesma, este estudo visa contribuir para a compreensão e superação de fatores que parecem dificultar a transposição da inovação para as práticas de ensino-aprendizagem correntes, através de duas frentes investigativas: i) caracterizar os docentes na sua dimensão conceptual, o que pensam e o que os motiva, e na sua dimensão prática, isto é, as estratégias didáticas que adotam e adaptam; e ainda, ii) criar oportunidades de concretização de inovação através do desenho de estratégias promotoras de questionamento dos alunos, e também dos docentes. A formulação de questões, e a procura de respostas, é reconhecida como sendo fundamental no desenvolvimento e na aplicação de competências centrais, tais como o pensamento crítico e reflexivo, sendo igualmente importante na resolução de problemas. Assim, numa articulação dinâmica entre conhecer, compreender e agir, a investigação envolveu uma colaboração próxima com um grupo de quatro docentes universitários, ao longo de dois anos letivos consecutivos (2009/2010 e 2010/2011), na conceptualização e implementação de diversas estratégias didáticas impulsionadoras do questionamento dos alunos, promovendo-se igualmente o questionamento reflexivo nos docentes. O trabalho foi desenvolvido no contexto de duas unidades curriculares semestrais (Microbiologia e Temas e Laboratórios em Biologia), destinadas sobretudo a alunos do primeiro ano. Enquanto estudo longitudinal de casos múltiplos, com características etnográficas e de investigação-ação, o trabalho de campo envolveu a combinação de diversos métodos de recolha de dados. Realizaram-se várias observações de aulas, assim como entrevistas semi-estruturadas, aos quatro professores colaboradores, e a alguns dos seus alunos. Aplicou-se ainda, em momentos específicos da investigação, uma versão portuguesa do Approaches to Teaching Inventory – ATI (Trigwell, Prosser, & Ginns, 2005) aos docentes. Recolheram-se também todos os documentos escritos produzidos pelos alunos e pelos professores no âmbito da investigação. Todo o desenho investigativo, assim como a análise dos dados, nomeadamente análise de conteúdo e análise documental, encontra-se fundamentado na literatura teórico-empírica de três áreas da especialidade: estudo do questionamento, análise do discurso oral em contexto de aulas de ciências e estudo das conceções e práticas de ensino dos docentes universitários, destacando-se nesta última a linha investigativa das Abordagens ao Ensino. Os resultados obtidos, assim como a reflexão sobre o percurso investigativo, possibilitaram a obtenção de contributos inovadores e úteis no sentido da promoção de um Ensino Superior de qualidade. Por um lado, são de salientar as evidências recolhidas com os quatro casos (docentes) que apontam para uma natureza integrativa das conceptualizações de ensino, constituindo um contributo teórico relevante para o debate académico desta área. Por outro, foi possível aceder a dinâmicas associadas à formulação de questões por docentes universitários em contexto de aulas teórico-práticas e práticas, através do desenvolvimento e aplicação de um modelo de categorização de questionamento. Por fim, a conjugação de evidências do campo das ‘teorias de ensino’ (observação indireta) com as ‘práticas de ensino’ (observação direta) dos docentes possibilitou a identificação e caracterização de uma possível relação entre Práticas de Questionamento e Abordagens ao Ensino de professores universitários, ampliando desta forma o modelo conceptual de Keith Trigwell e colaboradores (Trigwell, Prosser, & Taylor, 1994). Enquanto investigação híbrida que se orientou por princípios do paradigma interpretativo-naturalista, e, também, do paradigma sócio-crítico, foi igualmente possível identificar um conjunto de recomendações específicas para a inovação e para a reflexividade, no sentido de estimular a comunidade académica, e os professores universitários em particular, a agirem como promotores de estratégias didáticas centradas no desenvolvimento de competências.

L'objet de cette recherche-action est la pratique de gestion des membres de la direction des écoles se situant dans la perspective de l'autodéveloppement. Plus d'une quarantaine d'entre eux, sur une période de deux années, se sont réunis dans des cercles d'analyse pour explorer leur pratique de gestion. Lorsque les membres de la direction agissent dans l'optique de l'autodéveloppement, ils se donnent le mandat d'organiser l'auto-organisation de l'école. Notre projet de recherche-action visait à explorer, avec eux, leurs modalités de gestion qui s'inspirent de cette vision. Il visait aussi à explorer des voies nouvelles permettant de mieux utiliser les marges d'action dont ils disposent. L'école est enchevêtrée dans une organisation d'organisations scolaires. La grande organisation scolaire l'intègre en tant que partie. Mais en tant qu'organisation spécifique, elle s'y différencie. À son tour, l'école devient un grand toit intégrant ses parties qui s'y différencient aussi. Les membres de la direction des écoles qui se réfèrent à l'autodéveloppernent veulent amplifier leur différenciation et celle de ses actrices et acteurs. Ils veulent aussi recourir à des modalités de coordination dites de concertation permettant cette différenciation. Les membres de la direction des écoles rencontrés dans les cercles participent et déterminent la mouvance organisationnelle actuellement vécue. Réussiront-ils à actualiser davantage les conceptions de pratique qui'ils avancent? L'idée de l'autodéveloppement est sous-jacente, sinon sous-entendue, à la mouvance organisationnelle vécue dans les écoles actuellement. L'apport principal de cette recherche-action est de rendre compte de pratiques et de conceptions de membres de direction d'école s'inscrivant dans cette idée. Notre cadre théorique, en proposant une articulation conceptuelle de cette vision de l'organisation, a permis de donner corps aux diverses et multiples pratiques et conceptions observées. Il a permis aussi d'y déceler des tendances. Cette articulation, en s'appuyant sur la nouvelle épistémologie de l'auto-organisation, offre une esquisse d'un cadre de référence pour la gestion des écoles. Son application pourrait être approfondie dans de nouvelles recherches-action."--Résumé abrégé par UMI
