The developments of digital technology have opened new outlooks for online education which offer students the flexibility to learn at any time and any place. With all this instructional changes teachers, in all levels of the educational chain have been compelled to adapt quickly to this reality. They have a wide diversity of tools available to grab student’s attention and to motivate them to embrace the knowledge in their own learning process. One of these resources is the use of videos. Through them teachers can deliver complex information and contents to students and, if used creatively, videos can become a powerful technological tool in education. In this article we will explore some of the potential benefits and challenges associated with the use of videos in the teaching and learning process at higher education levels. We will also discuss some thoughts and examples for the use of teaching materials to enhance student’s learning and try to share ideas about the potentialities and future of video’s annotation new software resources, as incoming open tools for group work involvement.

In this study, an attempt was made in order to measure and evaluate the eco-efficiency performance of a pultruded composite processing company. For this purpose the recommendations of World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WCSD) and the directives of ISO 14301 standard were followed and applied. The main general indicators of eco-efficiency, as well as the specific indicators, were defined and determined. With basis on indicators’ figures, the value profile, the environmental profile, and the pertinent ecoefficiency’s ratios were established and analyzed. In order to evaluate potential improvements on company eco-performance, new indicators values and eco-efficiency ratios were estimated taking into account the implementation of new proceedings and procedures, both in upstream and downstream of the production process, namely: a) Adoption of new heating system for pultrusion die in the manufacturing process, more effective and with minor heat losses; c) Recycling approach, with partial waste reuse of scrap material derived from manufacturing, cutting and assembly processes of GFRP profiles. These features lead to significant improvements on the sequent assessed eco-efficiency ratios of the present case study, yielding to a more sustainable product and manufacturing process of pultruded GFRP profiles.

Serum samples from 356 HBsAg positive asymptomatic carriers, which were titrated by reverse passive hemagglutination, were analysed for the presence of HBV-DNA, HBsAg and IgM anti-HBc. The samples were divided in three classes, according to the titers of HBsAg and IgM anti-HBc and the distribution of HBV-DNA and HBsAg among these classes was studied. In the high titer class of HBsAg, 65% of samples have one or both markers against only 19% in the low titer class. From the total of 356 samples, 121 gave positive results for IgM anti-HBc (33.9%). From these, 38.9% of HBV-DNA and 47.9% of HBeAg were observed, whereas in samples with absence of IgM anti-HBc, 18.3% and 16.6% were respectively found. A higher frequency of agreement between all these markers was found in the class of high titers of HBsAg; however, HBV-DNA was detected in the low titer class of HBsAg and little or no IgM anti-HBc, showing potential blood infectivity even in HBsAg positive borderline samples.

The development and applications of thermoset polymeric composites, namely fibre reinforced plastics (FRP), have shifted in the last decades more and more into the mass market [1]. Despite of all advantages associated to FRP based products, the increasing production and consume also lead to an increasing amount of FRP wastes, either end-of-lifecycle products, or scrap and by-products generated by the manufacturing process itself. Whereas thermoplastic FRPs can be easily recycled, by remelting and remoulding, recyclability of thermosetting FRPs constitutes a more difficult task due to cross-linked nature of resin matrix. To date, most of the thermoset based FRP waste is being incinerated or landfilled, leading to negative environmental impacts and supplementary added costs to FRP producers and suppliers. This actual framework is putting increasing pressure on the industry to address the options available for FRP waste management, being an important driver for applied research undertaken cost efficient recycling methods. [1-2]. In spite of this, research on recycling solutions for thermoset composites is still at an elementary stage. Thermal and/or chemical recycling processes, with partial fibre recovering, have been investigated mostly for carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) due to inherent value of carbon fibre reinforcement; whereas for glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP), mechanical recycling, by means of milling and grinding processes, has been considered a more viable recycling method [1-2]. Though, at the moment, few solutions in the reuse of mechanically-recycled GFRP composites into valueadded products are being explored. Aiming filling this gap, in this study, a new waste management solution for thermoset GFRP based products was assessed. The mechanical recycling approach, with reduction of GFRP waste to powdered and fibrous materials was applied, and the potential added value of obtained recyclates was experimentally investigated as raw material for polyester based mortars. The use of a cementless concrete as host material for GFRP recyclates, instead of a conventional Portland cement based concrete, presents an important asset in avoiding the eventual incompatibility problems arisen from alkalis silica reaction between glass fibres and cementious binder matrix. Additionally, due to hermetic nature of resin binder, polymer based concretes present greater ability for incorporating recycled waste products [3]. Under this scope, different GFRP waste admixed polymer mortar (PM) formulations were analyzed varying the size grading and content of GFRP powder and fibre mix waste. Added value of potential recycling solution was assessed by means of flexural and compressive loading capacities of modified mortars with regard to waste-free polymer mortars.

In the present study three techniques for obtaining outer membrane enriched fractions from Yersinia pestis were evaluated. The techniques analysed were: differential solubilization of the cytoplasmic membrane with Sarkosyl or Triton X-100, and centrifugation in sucrose density gradients. The sodium dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of outer membrane isolated by the different methods resulted in similar protein patterns. The measurement of NADH-dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase (inner membrane enzymes) indicated that the outer membrane preparations obtained by the three methods were pure enough for analytical studies. In addition, preliminary evidences on the potential use of outer membrane proteins for the identification of geographic variants of Y. pestis wild isolates are presented.

RESUMO - O aumento da incidência das doenças crónicas representa um desafio enorme para todos os Sistemas de Saúde, pelo que a assistência de Saúde a doentes crónicos se tornou num problema das sociedades ocidentais. Os países mais pobres são os que mais sofrem, embora nos países desenvolvidos também se verifique um aumento notável das doenças crónicas. Estima-se que estas representem mais de 60% do total das doenças mundiais no ano 2020 (WHO, 2001). A adaptação dos actuais modelos de saúde aos doentes crónicos não atingiu os objectivos, o que conduziu a que, de há alguns anos a esta parte, se procure alternativas mais eficazes e eficientes. Uma das pressões do mercado que se fazem sentir será caracterizada por uma maior aposta na Promoção da Saúde e Prevenção da doença. O conceito de “Saúde” migrou de “não existência de doença” para “Bem-estar Físico e Psicológico”. Desta forma, o foco dos cuidados de saúde teve que ser adaptado, o que conduziu a uma situação em que o âmbito da prestação de cuidados de saúde é um contínuo de serviços que vai desde a promoção da saúde, medicina preventiva e medicina curativa aos cuidados continuados e cuidados paliativos. As tecnologias de informação e comunicação desempenharão um importante papel nesta tendência, permitindo estabelecer ligações contínuas entre os consumidores e prestadores de cuidados de saúde. Por outro lado, as potencialidades da Internet, das comunicações móveis, dispositivos portáteis e do instrumental electrónico, tornam-se evidentes no desenvolvimento de serviços de e-Saúde: para monitorização, seguimento e controlo dos doentes extra hospitalar - serviços estes centrados no doente. O objectivo geral do presente estudo consiste no desenho de um projecto de investigação para posterior avaliação da percepção do estado de saúde dos doentes seguidos na consulta de hipocoagulação do Hospital de Santa Marta. Devido à escassez de investigação na temática deste trabalho em Portugal, procedeu-se a um trabalho exploratório, descritivo, de carácter comparativo e enquadrado na abordagem quantitativa. O campo de análise consiste em comparar doentes que fazem anticoagulação oral, seguidos na consulta de cardiologia (consulta convencional), com os doentes seguidos no programa Airmed (através das comunicações móveis). 4 Para avaliação da percepção do estado de saúde foi utilizado o questionário SF-36.----ABSTRACT - The increasing incidence of chronic diseases represents an enormous challenge to the Health Systems and on cause of that, the Health Assistance to chronic patients became a concern of the Occidental society. The Countries with lower economical resources are the ones that suffers the most, but also the Developed countries have a noticeable increase of chronic diseases. It is estimated these will represent over 60% of total diseases world wide in 2020 (WHO,2001). The adaptation of the actual Health Models to chronic patients did not achieved it’s goals, what leaded to look for more effective and efficient alternatives. One of the more sensitive market pressure factor is to look for a better Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. The concept of “Health” merged from “Disease absence” to “Physic and Psychic Wellness”. In this way the Health Care focus had to be adapted, what drove to a status where the scope of the Health care is a continuum of services that goes from the Health Promotion, Preventive and Curative to Continued and Palliative Medical Care. The Information and Communication Technologies will play a crucial role in this trend, allowing to establish continued connections between patients and Health Care providers. In parallel the potential of the Internet, mobile communications, portable devices and electronic instruments became evident to deploy e-Health services: to monitor, follow-up and control of patients outside the Hospital. The overall objective of the present study is an Investigation Project Design to further evaluate the health status perception of the patients followed in the consultation for Hypocoagulation in the “Hospital de Santa Marta”. Due to lack of investigation in this thematic, in Portugal, this study is developed in an exploratory way, descriptive, comparative, within a scope of a quantified approach. The most consumed squid species worldwide were characterized regarding their concentrations of minerals, fatty acids, cholesterol and vitamin E. Interspecific comparisons were assessed among species and geographical origin. The health benefits derived from squid consumption were assessed based on daily minerals intake and on nutritional lipid quality indexes. Squids contribute significantly to daily intake of several macro (Na, K, Mg and P) and micronutrients (Cu, Zn and Ni). Despite their low fat concentration, they are rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentanoic (EPA) acids, with highly favorable ω-3/ω-6 ratios (from 5.7 to 17.7), reducing the significance of their high cholesterol concentration (140–549 mg/100 g ww). Assessment of potential health risks based on minerals intake, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks indicated that Loligo gahi (from Atlantic Ocean), Loligo opalescens (from Pacific Ocean) and Loligo duvaucelii (from Indic Ocean) should be eaten with moderation due to the high concentrations of Cu and/or Cd. Canonical discriminant analysis identified the major fatty acids (C14:0, C18:0, C18:1, C18:3ω-3, C20:4ω-6 and C22:5ω-6), P, K, Cu and vitamin E as chemical discriminators for the selected species. These elements and compounds exhibited the potential to prove authenticity of the commercially relevant squid species.
