There are some striking similarities and some differences between the seismic reflection sections recorded across the fold and thrust belts of the southeast Canadian Cordillera, Quebec-Maine Appalachians and Swiss Alps. In the fold and thrust belts of all three mountain ranges, seismic reflection surveys have yielded high-quality images of. (1) nappes (thin thrust sheets) stacked on top of ancient continental margins; (2) ramp anticlines in the hanging walls of faults that have ramp-flat or listric geometries; (3) back thrusts and back folds that developed during the terminal phases of orogeny; and (4) tectonic wedges and regional decollements. A principal result of the Cordilleran and Appalachian deep crustal studies has been the recognition of master decollements along which continental margin strata have been transported long distances, whereas a principal result of the Swiss Alpine deep crustal program has been the identification of the Adriatic indenter, a crustal-scale wedge that caused delamination of the European lithosphere. Significant crustal roots are observed beneath the fold and thrust belts of the Alps, southeast Canadian Cordillera and parts of the southern Appalachians, but such structures beneath the northern Appalachians have probably been removed by post-orogenic collapse and/or crustal attenuation associated with the Mesozoic opening of the Atlantic Ocean.

Treball de recerca realitzat per una alumna d'ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit cientí­fic del Jovent l'any 2009. L'amor, l'etern tema en el món literari és el protagonista de la temàtica en què se centra el projecte però, des de les primeres mostres literàries fins l'actualitat són infinites les creacions aparegudes. El treball s'ha centrat en algunes que són una digna representació de l'amor literari en cada època i en diverses parts de la literatura universal. Fins aquí un plantejament que no s'alunya de cap model realitzat dins de la temàtica de la literatura comparada. Però per solucionar la manca d'un fil conductor es va crear una novel·la que és la que guia aquest treball. Així es mostra el que una persona pot extreure llegint diverses obres d'amor literari, i no només sobre teories generals, sinó també d'opinions i pròpies emocions que provoca l'experiència de lectura. De la mà d en Marco, un jove veronès, i la seva vella amiga, la bibliotecària Sophie, es guia al lector a través d'un viatge que sorgeix de les primeres mostres d'amor escrit i arriba fins als nostres dies.

A partir de la implantació de ECTS en l’àmbit de l’EEES, la nova metodologia docent, ha augmentat la importància de les guies docents. Això és degut a que l’alumne pasa a ser l’actor principal del procés d’aprenentatge. Això provoca la creació d’agendes d’aprenentatge però per poder oferir als alumnes aquestes agendes es crea la necessitat de disposar d’una eina que ens permeti introduir les guies docents de manera que tinguem una integració entre agenda i guia docent. En aquest projecte s’intenta aconseguir aquesta eina que a més de permetre introduir les guies docents, ens permeti obtenir informació de manera visual sobre les activitats d’aquesta guia docent.

Acetabular cup orientation is a key factor determining hip stability, and standard mechanical guides have shown little help in improving alignment. An in vitro study was carried out to compare the accuracy and precision of a new gravity-assisted guidance system with a standard mechanical guide. Three hundred ten cups were impacted by 5 surgeons, and the final cup orientation was measured. With the new guide, the average error in anteversion was 0.4 degrees , compared with 10.4 degrees with the standard guide and 0.3 degrees and -4.7 degrees , respectively, for abduction angles. The average time required for orienting the cups was similar for both guides. The accuracy and reproducibility obtained with the new guide were better (P < .0001). These good results would require a clinical validation.

Improvement of nerve regeneration and functional recovery following nerve injury is a challenging problem in clinical research. We have already shown that following rat sciatic nerve transection, the local administration of triiodothyronine (T3) significantly increased the number and the myelination of regenerated axons. Functional recovery is a sum of the number of regenerated axons and reinnervation of denervated peripheral targets. In the present study, we investigated whether the increased number of regenerated axons by T3-treatment is linked to improved reinnervation of hind limb muscles. After transection of rat sciatic nerves, silicone or biodegradable nerve guides were implanted and filled with either T3 or phosphate buffer solution (PBS). Neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) were analyzed on gastrocnemius and plantar muscle sections stained with rhodamine alpha-bungarotoxin and neurofilament antibody. Four weeks after surgery, most end-plates (EPs) of operated limbs were still denervated and no effect of T3 on muscle reinnervation was detected at this stage of nerve repair. In contrast, after 14 weeks of nerve regeneration, T3 clearly enhanced the reinnervation of gastrocnemius and plantar EPs, demonstrated by significantly higher recovery of size and shape complexity of reinnervated EPs and also by increased acetylcholine receptor (AChRs) density on post synaptic membranes compared to PBS-treated EPs. The stimulating effect of T3 on EP reinnervation is confirmed by a higher index of compound muscle action potentials recorded in gastrocnemius muscles. In conclusion, our results provide for the first time strong evidence that T3 enhances the restoration of NMJ structure and improves synaptic transmission.

La metodologia docent impulsada per la creació d’un Espai Europeu d’Ensenyament Superior comú implica tenir en compte el treball de l’estudiant. En aquest sentit, resulta molt convenient facilitar a l’alumnat de primers cursos l’adaptació a una docència que s’organitza en crèdits ECTS i que se centra en el procés d’aprenentatge dels estudiants. Per aquest motiu, l’objectiu d’aquest projecte ha estat que assumissin un grau més elevat de responsabilitat en l’aprenentatge i que adquirissin una competència més gran en l’organització del temps d’acord amb els programes docents de les assignatures que cursessin. Per aconseguir-ho, s’ha creat un entorn de presentació de les guies docents basat en les agendes d’activitats d’aprenentatge. Aquestes agendes són, de fet, planificacions de les activitats presencials i no presencials que han de dur a terme els estudiants per assolir els objectius de cadascuna de les assignatures que fan. Perquè siguin efectives, han de ser el més individuals possibles i amb la informació suficient com perquè les activitats es puguin dur a terme. Així, els alumnes disposen d’una veritable agenda particular del què han de fer i quan per seguir una assignatura determinada. Com a resultat del projecte s’ha proposat una organització de la informació d’una assignatura que facilita tant la gestió de les guies docents com la creació d’agendes d’activitats d’aprenentatge, s’ha establert una metodologia de presentació dels programes docents amb suport de web perquè sigui de fàcil consulta i en els que els vincles de cada activitat s’activen segons el ritme del curs i, finalment, s’ha aplicat tot per al cas de l’assignatura de Fonaments de computadors, aconseguint que l’alumnat s’acostumi a seguir les agendes d’activitats i, consegüentment, a millorar el rendiment acadèmic de l’assignatura, que era el que, es pretenia originalment.

Since the early nineties, several hundreds of Chinese immigrants have settled in what has become known as the 'Chinese wholesalers area'. For the past two years, Chinese wholesalers in Aubervilliers have been calling on public authorities to address the problem of street robberies and violent thefts, which they experience on a daily basis. Yet, they have been encouraged by the authorities to ensure their own protection, by - amongst other things - installing surveillance cameras to film the streets. This is illegal according to French legislation on camera surveillance. Knowing this, why have surveillance cameras been adopted as a solution? This question guides the ethnographic analysis presented here of a situation where the installation of surveillance cameras was locally negotiated by the main actors involved - namely, the wholesalers' representatives and the police.

Major emergency management is a key challenge and a priority issue for Government. Clearly, the world in which we live is constantly changing and we need to develop our major emergency management architecture to enable us to deal effectively with the possibility of new risks and threats. In the last few years most European Countries have engaged in review and development of their major emergency or civil protection arrangements. This new Framework for Major Emergency Management moves in line with international trends in this field. Les seves creences, els seus valors, la religió, la societat..? són tota una colla de preguntes que originen l'interès central d'aquest treball: l'esforç d'aproximar-se al procés de mort, de dol des del punt de vista de la religió, i, més concretament, de les creences, valors i guies de comportament que aquesta proporciona als creients. Aquestes i altres preguntes pretenen ser resoltes en aquest treball, a partir de l'estudi d'una mostra concretament centrada en els habitants de la ciutat de Vic.

WALK operate a Community Garden in Dublin 12 which promotes the growing of fresh fruit, vegetable, salad leaves and flowers which change seasonally. The garden helps create a sense of community and advocates the benefits of growing healthy food, environmental awareness and sustainability. It offers an opportunities for people to take part in hand-on, activity based learning with some formal training offered to local groups and individuals with varying levels of skill and ability. This outdoor space fosters an interest in growing and guides people in learning new skills which can be transferred to their own gardens or allotments.
