Moringa oleifera Lam, is a leguminous plant, originally from Asia, which is cultivated in Brazil because of its low production cost. Although some people have used this plant as food, there is little information about its chemical and nutritional characteristics. The objective of this study was to characterise the leaves of M. oleifera in terms of their chemical composition, protein fractions obtained by solubility in different systems and also to assess their nutritional quality and presence of bioactive substances. The whole leaf flour contained 28.7% crude protein, 7.1% fat, 10.9% ashes, 44.4% carbohydrate and 3.0 mg 100 g(-1) calcium and 103.1 mg 100 g(-1) iron. The protein profile revealed levels of 3.1% albumin, 0.3% globulins, 2.2% prolamin, 3.5% glutelin and 70.1% insoluble proteins. The hydrolysis of the protein from leaf flour employing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and 2-mercaptoethanol (ME) resulted in 39.5% and 29.5%, respectively. The total protein showed low in vitro digestibility (31.8%). The antinutritional substances tested were tannins (20.7 mg g(-1)), trypsin inhibitor (1.45 TIU mg g(-1)), nitrate (17 mg g(-1)) and oxalic acid (10.5 mg g(-1)), besides the absence of cyanogenic compounds. beta-Carotene and lutein stood out as major carotenoids, with concentrations of 161.0 and 47.0 mu g g(-1) leaf, respectively. Although M. oleifera leaves contain considerable amount of crude protein, this is mostly insoluble and has low in vitro digestibility, even after heat treatment and chemical attack. In vivo studies are needed to better assess the use of this leaf as a protein source in human feed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two studies were conducted to understand sperm cryosensitivity in an endangered equid, the Przewalski's horse (Equus ferns przewalski), while testing the cryoprotectant ability of formamides. The first assessed the toxicity of permeating cryoprotectants (glycerol, methylformamide IMF] and dimethylformamide [DMF]) to Przewalski's horse spermatozoa during liquid storage at 4 C. The second examined the comparative influence of three diluents (with or without formamides) on cryosurvival of sperm from the Przewalski's versus domestic horse. When Przewalski's horse spermatozoa were incubated at 4 C in INRA 96 with differing concentrations of glycerol, MF or DMF or a combination of these amides, cells tolerated all but the highest concentration (10% v/v) of MF alone or in combination with DMF, both of which decreased (P < 0.05) motility traits. There was no effect of cryoprotectants on sperm acrosomal integrity. In the cryosurvival study, average sperm motility and proportion of cells with intact acrosomes in fresh ejaculates were similar (P> 0.05) between the Przewalski's (67%, 84%, respectively) and domestic (66%, 76%) horse donors. Sperm from both species were diluted in lactose-EDTA-glycerol (EQ), Botu-Crio (BOTU; a proprietary product containing glycerol and MF) or SM (INRA 96 plus 2% [v/v] egg yolk and 2.5% [v/v] MF and DMF) and then frozen over liquid nitrogen vapor. After thawing, the highest values recovered for total and progressive sperm motility, acrosomal integrity and mitochondria] membrane potential were 42.4%, 21.8%, 88.7% and 25.4 CN (CN = mean JC-1 fluorescence intensity/cell on a channel number scale), respectively, in the Przewalski's and 49.3%, 24.6%, 88.9% and 25.8 CN, respectively, in the domestic horse. Although sperm progressive motility and acrosome integrity did not differ (P> 0.05) among treatments across species, mitochondrial membrane potential was higher (P< 0.05) in both species using EQ compared to BOTU or SM media. Additionally, Przewalski's stallion sperm expressed higher (P < 0.05) post-thaw total motility in BOTU and SM compared to EQ whereas there were no differences among freezing diluents in the domestic horse. In summary, Przewalski's stallion sperm benefit from exposure to either MF or DMF as an alternative cryoprotectant to glycerol. Overt sperm quality appears similar between the Przewalski's and domestic horse, although the total motility of cells from the former appears more sensitive to certain freezing diluents. Nonetheless, post-thaw motility and acrosomal integrity values for Przewalski's horse spermatozoa mimic findings in the domestic horse in the presence of INRA 96 supplemented with 2% (v/v) egg yolk and a combined 2.5% concentration of MF and DMF. Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) of the jaws represents a localized and benign neoplastic lesion sometimes characterized by aggressive osteolytic proliferation. The World Health Organization defines it as an intraosseous lesion composed of cellular and dense connective tissues that contain multiple hemorrhagic foci, an aggregation of multinucleated giant cells, and occasional bone tissue trabeculae. The origin of this lesion is uncertain; however, factors such as local trauma, inflammation, intraosseous hemorrhage, and genetic abnormalities have been identified as possible causes. CGCG generally affects those younger than 30 years and occurs more frequently in women (2: 1). This lesion corresponds to approximately 7% of all benign tumors of the jaws, with prevalence in the anterior region of the jaw. Aggressive lesions are characterized by symptoms, such as pain, numbness, rapid growth, cortical perforation, root resorption, and a high recurrence rate after curettage. In contrast, nonaggressive CGCGs have a slow rate of growth, may contain sparse trabeculation, and are less likely to move teeth or cause root resorption or cortical perforation. Nonaggressive CGCGs are generally asymptomatic lesions and thus are frequently found on routine dental radiographs. Radiographically, the 2 forms of CGCG present as radiolucent, expansive, unilocular or multilocular masses with well-defined margins. The histopathology of CGCG is characterized by multinucleated giant cells, surrounded by round, oval, and spindle-shaped mononuclear cells, scattered in dense connective tissue with hemorrhagic and abundant vascularization foci. The final diagnosis is determined by histopathologic analysis of the biopsy specimen. The preferred treatment for CGCG consists of excisional biopsy, curettage with a safety margin, and partial or total resection of the affected bone. Conservative treatments include local injections of steroids, calcitonin, and antiangiogenic therapy. Drug treatment using antibiotics, painkillers, and corticosteroids and clinical and radiographic monitoring are necessary for approximately 10 days after surgery. There are only a few cases of spontaneous CGCG regression described in the literature; therefore, a detailed case report of CGCG regression in a 12-yearold boy with a 4-year follow-up is presented and compared with previous studies. The Box-Cox transformation is a technique mostly utilized to turn the probabilistic distribution of a time series data into approximately normal. And this helps statistical and neural models to perform more accurate forecastings. However, it introduces a bias when the reversion of the transformation is conducted with the predicted data. The statistical methods to perform a bias-free reversion require, necessarily, the assumption of Gaussianity of the transformed data distribution, which is a rare event in real-world time series. So, the aim of this study was to provide an effective method of removing the bias when the reversion of the Box-Cox transformation is executed. Thus, the developed method is based on a focused time lagged feedforward neural network, which does not require any assumption about the transformed data distribution. Therefore, to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, numerical simulations were conducted and the Mean Absolute Percentage Error, the Theil Inequality Index and the Signal-to-Noise ratio of 20-step-ahead forecasts of 40 time series were compared, and the results obtained indicate that the proposed reversion method is valid and justifies new studies. Preeclampsia (PE) is characterized by hypertension and proteinuria, occurring after the 20th week of pregnancy in women who have had no previous symptoms. The disease progresses with generalized vasoconstriction and endothelial dysfunction. Clinically, it is important to diagnose the severe form of the disease (sPE), in which blood pressure and proteinuria are much higher. Recently, the gestational age (GA) of the onset of PE has led to the classification of this disease as early (GA <34 weeks) and late (GA >= 34 weeks). Several genetic polymorphisms affecting endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) levels or function were described, including G894T (Glu298Asp), VNTR b/a (variable-number 27-bp tandem repeat) and T-786C (promoter) polymorphisms. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the distribution of G894T, VNTR b/a and T-786C polymorphisms and their haplotypes in Brazilian early and late sPE, as well as in normotensive pregnant. A total of 201 women were evaluated, 53 with early sPE, 45 with late sPE and 103 as normotensive pregnant women. The frequency of 894T allele was higher in late sPE vs normotensive pregnant, and 894TT genotype was higher in late sPE vs early sPE and normotensive pregnant. For VNTR b/a polymorphism, higher frequencies of aa genotype and a allele were observed in early sPE vs late sPE and normotensive pregnant. Besides, the frequency of haplotype T-b-C was higher in late sPE vs early sPE and normotensive pregnant. Considering the results found for eNOS polymorphisms, it is possible to suggest that the functional alterations induced by these two polymorphisms may influence the time of severe PE onset, although both alterations are putatively associated with low NO bioavailability. However, other studies are necessary to validate these findings and clarify this issue. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The need for development of new materials is a natural process in the companies’ technological point of view, seeking improvements in materials and processes. Specifically, among the materials, ceramic exhibit valuable properties, especially the covalent ceramics which have excellent properties for applications which requires the abrasion resistance, hardness, high temperatures, resistence, etc. being a material that has applications in several areas. Most studies are related to improvement of properties, specially fracture toughness that allows the expansion of its application. Among the most promising ceramic materials are silicon nitride (Si3N4) which has excellent properties. The goal of this work was the development and caracterization of Si3N4-based ceramics, doped with yttrium oxide (Y2O3), rar earth concentrate (CTR2O3) and cerium oxide (CeO2) in the same proportion for the evaluation of properties. The powders' mixtures were homogenized, dried and compressed under pressure uniaxial and isostatic. Sintering was carried out in 1850 ⁰C under pressure of 0,1MPa N2 for 1 h with a heating rate of 25 ⁰C / min and cooling in the furnace inertia. The characterizations were performed using Archimedes principle to relative density, weight loss by measuring before and after sintering, phase analysis by X-ray diffraction, microstructure by scanning electron microscope (SEM), hardness and fracture toughness by the method Vickers indentation. The results obtained showed relative density of 97-98%, Vickers hardness 17 to 19 GPa, fracture toughness 5.6 to 6.8 MPa.m1/2, with phases varying from α-SiAlON and β-Si3N4 depending the types of additives used. The results are promising for tribological applications and can be defined according to the types of additives to be used
