The limitation of photoactivation of dual-polymerized resin cements along the margins of metal restorations may adversely affect the mechanical properties of these cements, thus impairing the retention of restorations. The aim of this study was to assess the bond strength of cast metal crowns cemented with three dual-polymerized resin cements, using a chemically-activated resin cement and zinc phosphate as controls. Fifty nickel-chromium alloy crowns were cast and randomly assigned to five groups of equal size. Castings were cemented on their corresponding metal dies with one of the tested luting agents: Scotchbond Resin Cement, Enforce and Panavia F (dual-polymerized resin cements), Cement-It (chemically-activated resin cement) and Zinc Phosphate Cement (zinc phosphate cement). Specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 degreesC for 24 h and then loaded in tension until failure. Panavia F and Zinc Phosphate Cement provided the highest and lowest bond strength means, respectively. Scotchbond Resin Cement, Enforce and Cement-It cements exhibited similar intermediate values, but with statistically significant difference compared to the other materials (P < 0.05). Even with the restriction or absence of light activation, all tested dual-polymerized resin cements produced significantly higher bond strength than did the zinc phosphate cement and yielded similar or better results than the chemically activated cement. It should be pointed out that the findings of this study relate to a test scenario which does not mimic clinical circumstances and that further work is required to identify the clinical significance of the reported tensile bond strength differences between the different luting materials.

Several statistical models can be used for assessing genotype X environment interaction (GEI) and studying genotypic stability. The objectives of this research were to show how (i) to use Bayesian methodology for computing Shukla's phenotypic stability variance and (ii) to incorporate prior information on the parameters for better estimation. Potato [Solanum tuberosum subsp. andigenum (Juz. & Bukasov) Hawkes], wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and maize (Zea mays L.) multi environment trials (MET) were used for illustrating the application of the Bayes paradigm. The potato trial included 15 genotypes, but prior information for just three genotypes was used. The wheat trial used prior information on all 10 genotypes included in the trial, whereas for the maize trial, noninformative priors for the nine genotypes was used. Concerning the posterior distribution of the genotypic means, the maize MET with 20 sites gave less disperse posterior distributions of the genotypic means than did the posterior distribution of the genotypic means of the other METs, which included fewer environments. The Bayesian approach allows use of other statistical strategies such as the normal truncated distribution (used in this study). When analyzing grain yield, a lower bound of zero and an upper bound set by the researcher's experience can be used. The Bayesian paradigm offers plant breeders the possibility of computing the probability of a genotype being the best performer. The results of this study show that although some genotypes may have a very low probability of being the best in all sites, they have a relatively good chance of being among the five highest yielding genotypes.

Monte Carlo simulation results for pure liquid acetone and water-acetone mixtures calculated in the isothermal and isobaric (NPT) ensemble at T=298K and p=1.0atm are presented. The TIP4P model was used for water and optimized potential for liquid simulation (OPLS) force field parameters used for acetone. The results obtained for the average configurational energy as a function of the mole fraction are in good accord with experimental data. Energy partitioning and co-ordination numbers results calculated for equimolar water-acetone solution are compared to similar data obtained for other water-organic liquid mixtures. These results show an increase in water-water interaction energy and co-ordination numbers when the interaction between water and organic liquid molecules decrease. Distribution functions for pure liquid acetone and water-acetone mixtures are presented. Dipole-dipole angular correlation functions obtained for pure liquid acetone show a predominance of dimers with parallel alignment of dipole moments. Radial distribution functions from water-acetone interaction show characteristic features of hydrogen bonded liquids. Radial and angular distribution functions for water-water correlation calculated in pure water and in equimolar water-acetone mixture are compared, showing very similar features in both systems. Aim To assess the histological response associated with grey mineral trioxide aggregate (GMTA) and zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) as root-end filling materials in teeth where the root canals were not filled and the coronal access cavities were not restored.Methodology Periapical lesions were developed in 24 premolar teeth in three dogs. The root canals were prepared and half of them were dried, filled and the coronal access restored (closed). The remaining teeth were not root filled and no coronal restoration was placed (open). Apical root-end resections were performed 3 mm from the apex, and root-end cavities were prepared with ultrasonic tips. These were randomly filled with either ZOE or GMTA in the same number of specimens using MAPSYSTEM device. After 180 days the animals were killed and blocks of tissues removed and processed for histological examination. Periradicular tissue reaction was evaluated, including severity of inflammation and cementum formation. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA analysis and Tukey's test. Results A significant difference was found between the levels of inflammation in the periradicular tissues of the GMTA/closed group, compared with the ZOE/open and ZOE/closed groups (P < 0.05) but not between GMTA/closed and GMTA/open groups. Cementum formation was not found over any ZOE specimens but over MTA in all specimens. No microorganisms were found in the interface between the material and the dentinal walls. Conclusions GMTA was associated with less periapical inflammation and tissue response when used as a root-end filling material, even when no root filling or coronal restoration was present.

Biochemical values are widely related with environmental agents, sex and age, and are used in disease diagnosis. Numerous reports have been published on the biochemical parameters of different breeds of horses. However, there is a paucity of information concerning Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), ceruloplasmin, copper and zinc determinations in the serum. Blood samples from a total of 60 horses of the Mangalarga-Paulista breed, representing three age groups (0 to 4 months old, 6 to 18 months old and adult) were examined. Male horses have a higher mean value of SOD, ceruloplasmin and copper than do females. No significant sex-related difference was observed in serum zinc content of weaned and adult horses. SOD activity was significantly higher in adult animals. Since SOD has a protective effect against superoxide free radical toxicity and possesses anti-inflammatory activity, it is reasonable to assume that the increased activity of this enzyme may be due to an adaptation mechanism which protects the adult animal against oxygen toxicity.

A greenhouse investigation was carried out to study the effects of liming on the dry matter (DM) production of the grasses Brachiaria brizantha (Hoscht.) Stapf. cv. Marandu, Andropogon gayanus Kunth cv. Planaltina and Panicum maximum Jacq cv. Aruana, cultivated on a Dark-Red Latosol, medium texture. The liming levels were obtained through the addition of carbonates in a Ca:Mg ratio of 4:1, necessary to increase the degree of base saturation (V%) to the following values; 4% (control), 20%, 36%, 52%, 68% and 84%. During the experimental period (180 days), four cuts were done to determine the DM production. The results indicated that the DM production was increased (P<0,05) with the liming-levels increased to the three grasses. Panicum maximum cv. Aruana yielded the lower DM quantity, but it presented a better response to liming. The inverse was observed in relation to A. gayanus. The data allowed to conclude that the DM production increased by liming and when the V% level was lower than 50%, it will be increased to 70% for establishment.

Two patterns of solubilization of metal ions resulting from bioleaching of sewage sludge by sulphur-oxidizing Thiobacillus spp. were established as a function of pH. Chromium and copper ions required a pH of 2-3 to initiate their solubilization, whereas nickel and zinc ions had their solubilization initiated at pH 6-6.5. The patterns obtained were independent of the sludge solids concentrations investigated (10, 17, 25, 32.5 and 40 g l(-1)).

The endomembranous system of Serrasalmus spilopleura oocyte secondary growth was analysed using structural and ultrastructural cytochemical techniques. In vitellogenic oocytes, the endoplasmic reticulum components, the nuclear envelope intermembranous space, some Golgi dictiossomes, lysosomes, yolk granules, regions of the egg envelope and sites of the follicle cells react to acid phosphatase detection (AcPase). The cortical alveoli, some heterogeneous cytoplasmic structures, regions of the egg envelope, and sites of the follicle cells are strongly contrasted by osmium tetroxide and zinc iodide impregnation (ZIO). The endoplasmic reticulum components, some vesicles, and sites of the follicle cells also react to osmium tetroxide and potassium iodide impregnation (KI). The biosynthetic pathway of lysosomal proteins, such as acid phosphatase, required for vitellogenesis, involves the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, vesicles with inactive hydrolytic enzymes, and, finally, lysosomes. In S. spilopleura oocytes at secondary growth, the endomembranous system takes part in the production of the enzymes needed for vitellogenesis, and in the metabolism of yolk exogenous components (AcPase detection). The endomembranous system compartments also show reduction capacity (KI reaction) and are involved in the metabolism of proteins rich in SH-groups (ZIO reaction).

The rate removal of nickel from the airway was measured in vivo. Removal in vivo was studied by intratracheal injection of nickel chloride solutions. Regardless of time after injection, the lungs and heart retained the greatest concentration of nickel and 40 days after 1.68 mumol administration they were the organs where nickel was still significantly measurable. The slow removal of nickel may indicate the presence of high affinity binding sites in the lung. Nickel can interact with others metals, such as copper and zinc, so that nickel exposure may have public health implications.
