Changes in behaviour during the inter-nesting period and post-nesting migration for Ascension Island green turtles

Satellite transmitters were attached to green turtles Chelonia mydas while they were nesting on Ascension Island in the South Atlantic (7°57'S, 14°22'W) and individuals were subsequently monitored during the inter-nesting period and the post-nesting migration to Brazil. During the inter-nesting period, data from the transmitters suggested that turtles generally stayed within 5 km of the nesting beach on which they had originally been observed. During both the inter-nesting period and migration, turtles were submerged the vast majority (>95%) of the time, suggesting that they neither basked at the surface nor drifted passively during migration to any great extent. There was a clear dichotomy in submergence behaviour, with submergences tending to be of short duration during post-nesting migration (mean = 7.3 min, 3318 h of data from 5 individuals) and of longer duration during the inter-nesting period (mean = 22.1 min, 714 h of data from 5 different individuals). As submergence duration is generally linked to activity levels in sea turtles, this pattern suggests that turtles were comparatively inactive during the inter-nesting period and comparatively active during migration. During both the inter-nesting period and the post-nesting migration, diel submergence patterns were detected with dive duration tending to be longer at night. As the turtles migrated WSW from Ascension Island, there was a reduction in their speed of travel. A numerical model of the near-surface currents suggested that this reduction was associated with the weakening of the WSW flow of the prevailing South Atlantic Equatorial Current.

Inter- and intra-beach thermal variation for Green Turtle nests on Ascension Island, South Atlantic

Nest temperatures for green turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting on Ascension Island, South Atlantic (7°57'S 14°22'W), were examined. Temperature probes were placed into nests on two beaches, Long Beach (26 nests) and North East Bay (8 nests). Within these beaches there was relatively little thermal variation (SD of nest temperature was 0.32°C for Long Beach and 0.30°C for North East Bay). To examine inter-beach thermal variation temperature probes were buried at 55 cm on 12 beaches. Inter-beach thermal variation was large and was related to the beach albedo with the darkest beach (albedo, 016) being 4.2°C warmer than the lightest coloured beach (albedo, 0.73).

Distribution, extent of inter-annual variability and diet of the bloom-forming jellyfish Rhizostoma in European waters

Jellyfish (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa) are increasingly thought to play a number of important ecosystem roles, but often fundamental knowledge of their distribution, seasonality and inter-annual variability is lacking. Bloom forming species, due to their high densities, can have particularly intense trophic and socio-economic impacts. In northern Europe it is known that one particularly large (up to 30 kg wet weight) bloom forming jellyfish is Rhizostoma spp. Given the potential importance, we set out to review all known records from peer-reviewed and broader public literature of the jellyfish R. octopus (Linnaeus) and R. pulmo (Macri) (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomae) across western Europe. These data revealed distinct hotspots where regular Rhizostoma spp. aggregations appeared to form, with other sites characterized by occasional abundances and a widespread distribution of infrequent observations. Surveys of known R. octopus hotspots around the Irish Sea also revealed marked inter-annual variation with particularly high abundances forming during 2003. The location of such consistent aggregations and inter-annual variances are discussed in relation to physical, climatic and dietary variations.

Contentious Activism and Inter-Korean Relations

In South Korea, the contentious debate over relations with the North transcends traditional considerations of physical and economic security, and political activists play a critical role in shaping the discussion of these issues as they pursue the separate yet connected agendas of democracy, human rights, and unification.

Providing international observers with a better understanding of policymakers’ management of inter-Korean relations, Danielle L. Chubb traces the development of various policy disputes and perspectives from the 1970s through South Korea’s democratic transition. Focusing on four case studies—the 1980 Kwangju uprising, the June 1987 uprising, the move toward democracy in the 1990s, and the decade of “progressive” government that began with the election of Kim Dae Jung in 1997—she tracks activists’ complex views on reunification along with the rise and fall of more radical voices encouraging the adoption of a North Korean–style form of socialism. While these specific arguments have dissipated over the years, their vestiges can still be found in recent discussions over how to engage with North Korea and bring security and peace to the peninsula.

Extending beyond the South Korean example, this examination shows how the historical trajectory of norms and beliefs can have a significant effect on a state’s threat perception and security policy. It also reveals how political activists, in their role as discursive agents, play an important part in the creation of the norms and beliefs directing public debate over a state’s approach to the ethical and practical demands of its foreign policy.

Inter-organisational knowledge sharing in regional sustainable development communities

There has been an increasing interest in the use of inter-organisational groups to address regional implications in sustainable development. These groups bring together local knowledge and expertise and span boundaries between government and industry organisations. Our focus is in understanding how knowledge is shared in such inter-organisational groups. Utilising interviews, observations and social network analysis, we examine the knowledge sharing implications derived from the mixed membership, multilevel interaction, and the need to span boundaries with external organisations in these collaborations.

The unique inter-disciplinary requirements of a museum development : a case study of the Kelabit Highland community museum development project.

Each museum development presents complex and unique challenges. In particular, the Kelabit Highland Community Museum Development Project (KHCMDP) is a museum development that requires both discipline-specific and interdisciplinary collaboration to reach the common goal of the preservation and conservation of the fragile Kelabit heritage. Still in its infancy, however rich with potential, the engagement required to realize the development of this community-based museum, in the remote region of Bario in the Highlands of Borneo, offers a stimulating environment in which both discipline specific and creative interdisciplinary thinking are utilized to create a suitable and sustainable development. This paper will describe the process of extensive community consultation required by the interdisciplinary team of academics to address the areas of curatorial policies, preservation and conservation, the design of the built environment and the creation of the communication strategies for the project. It demonstrates the unique opportunity for diverse tertiary disciplines at Deakin University to further develop their knowledge of museology, preservation, identity creation and issues of representation and communication from an interdisciplinary perspective. Within each of the areas of concern, the interconnecting nature of the project has resulted in a strong intersection of each of the normally separate professional departments. Furthermore, adding to the complexity, this case study is a multi-disciplined research opportunity situated in a cross-cultural context.

Inter-observer variation in the diagnosis of coronal articular fracture lines in the lunate facet of the distal radius

Background: Several studies support the use of CT for diagnosing coronal fractures of the distal radius but the inter-observer reliability of these observations is less well studied. We tested the null hypothesis that radiographs alone and the combination of radiographs and two-dimensional computed tomography scans (2DCT) have the same inter-observer variation for the diagnosis of coronal articular fracture lines in the distal radius. Methods: Using a web-based survey, 63 surgeons were randomized to evaluate 16 fractures of the distal radius on radiographs alone or radiographs and 2DCT for the presence or absence of a coronal fracture line of the lunate facet and, if present, the stability of the fracture. The kappa multirater measure was calculated to estimate agreement between observers. Results: The inter-observer variation in diagnosis of a coronal fracture line was fair with both radiographs and 2DCT, as was the diagnosis of instability of the volar lunate facet fracture when present. Conclusion: Two-dimensional computed tomography does not improve observer agreement on the diagnosis of coronal plane articular fracture lines in the lunate facet of the distal radius. © 2012 American Association for Hand Surgery.
