Dinuclear trioxidic [{VOL}(2)mu-O] (1-4) complexes were synthesized from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] with an equimolar amount of H2L [H2L is the general abbreviation of hydrazone ligands (H2L1-4) derived from the condensation of benzoyl hydrazine with either 2-hydroxyacetophenone or its para substituted derivatives] in acetone or CH2Cl2 or acetonitrile. These V2O3L2 complexes were also obtained from the reaction of VOSO4 with H2L in the presence of two equivalents sodium acetate in aqueous-methanolic (50% V/V) medium and also from the decomposition of [(VO)-O-IV(L)(bipy/phen)] complexes in CH2Cl2 Solution. Black monoclinic crystals of 2 and 4 with C2/c space group were obtained from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)], respectively, with H2L2 and H2L4 in acetone in which the respective ligands are bonded meridionally to vanadium in their fully deprotonated enol forms. The V-O bond lengths follow the order: V-O(oxo) < V-O(oxo-bridged) < V-O(phenolate) < V-O(enolate). Complexes (1-4) are diamagnetic exhibiting LMCT transition band near 380 nm in CH2Cl2 solution and they are electroactive displaying a quasi-reversible reduction peak in the 0.14-0.30 V versus SCE region. The and the reduction peak potential (E-p(c)) values show linear relationships with the Hammett constant (sigma) of the substituents in the hydrazone ligands. These dinuclear complexes are converted to the corresponding mononuclear cis dioxo complexes K(H2O)(+)[(VO2)-O-V(L)](-) (5-8) and mixed-ligand [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes on reaction, respectively, with two equivalents KOH in methanol and two equivalents 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq) in CHCl3. Ascorbic acid reduces the dioxovanadium(V) complexes reversibly under aerobic condition. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three di-Schiff-base ligands, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine (H(2)Salpn), N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanedianiine (H(2)Salpen) and N,N'-bis(salicylidine)-ethylenediamine (H(2)Salen) react with Ni(SCN)(2). 4H(2)O in 2:3 molar ratios to form the complexes; mononuclear [Ni(HSalpn)(NCS)(H2O)]center dot H2O (1a), trinuclear [{Ni(Salpen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (2b) and trinuclear [{Ni(Salen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (3) respectively. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV-VIS spectra, and room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The structures of la and 2b have been confirmed by X-ray single crystal analysis. In complex la, the Ni(II) atom is coordinated equatorially by the tetradentate, mononegative Schiff-base, HSalpn. Axial coordination of isothiocyanate group and a water molecule completes its octahedral geometry. The hydrogen atom attached to one of the oxygen atoms of the Schiff base is involved in a very strong hydrogen bond with a neighboring unit to form a centrosymmetric dimer. In 2b, two square planar [Ni(Salpen)] units act as bide mate oxygen donor ligands to a central Ni(II) which is also coordinated by two mutually cis N-bonded thiocyanate ligands to complete its distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 3 possesses a similar structure to that of 2b. A dehydrated form of la and a hydrated form of 2b have been obtained and characterized. The importance of electronic and steric factors in the variation of the structures is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Formation of a quasi-symmetrical mu(3)-carbonato-bridged self-assembled heteromolecular triangle of Ni(II), [(mu(3)-CO3){Ni-2(salmeNH)(2)(NCS)(2)}[Ni(salmeNH(2))(2)]center dot Et2O center dot H2O (HsalmeNH = 2-[(3-methylamino-propylimino)-methyl]-phenol) involves atmospheric CO2 uptake in a neutral medium, by spontaneous self-reorganization of the starting mononuclear Ni(II)-Schiff-base complex, [Ni(salmeNH)(2)]. The environment around Ni(II) in two of the subunits is different from the third one. The starting complex, (Ni(salmeNH)(2)], and one of the possible intermediate species, [Ni(salmeNH(2))(2)(NCS)(2)], which has a very similar coordination environment to that in the third Ni(II) center, have been characterized structurally. A plausible mechanism for the formation of such a triangle has also been proposed. The compound shows a very strong antiferromagnetic coupling. Fit as a regular triangular arrangement gave J = -53.1, g = 2.24, and R = 1.5 x 10(-4).

Bis(o-hydroxyacetophenone)nickel(II) dihydrate, on reaction with 1,3-pentanediamine, yields a bis-chelate complex [NiL2]center dot 2H(2)O (1) of mono-condensed tridentate Schiff base ligand HL {2-[1-(3-aminopentylimino)ethyl]phenol}. The Schiff base has been freed from the complex by precipitating the Nil, as a dimethylglyoximato complex. HL reacts smoothly with Ni(SCN)(2)center dot 4H(2)O furnishing the complex [NiL(NCS)] (2) and with CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O in the presence of NaN3 or NH4SCN producing [CuL(N-3)](2) (3) or [CuL(NCS)] (4). On the other hand, upon reaction with Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O, the Schiff base undergoes hydrolysis to yield ternary complexes [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]ClO4 (5) and [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]NO3 (6), respectively (Hhap = o-hydroxyacetophenone and pn = 1,3-pentanediamine). The ligand HL undergoes hydrolysis also on reaction with Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O or Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O to yield [Ni(hap)(2)] (7). The structures of the complexes 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In complex 2, Ni-II possesses square-planar geometry, being coordinated by the tridentate mono-negative Schiff base, L and the isothiocyanate group. The coordination environment around Cu-II in complex 3 is very similar to that in complex 2 but here two units are joined together by end-on, axial-equatorial azide bridges to result in a dimer in which the geometry around Cu-II is square pyramidal. In both 5 and 6, the Cu-II atoms display the square-pyramidal environment; the equatorial sites being coordinated by the two amine groups of 1,3-pentanediamine and two oxygen atoms of o-hydroxyacetophenone. The axial site is coordinated by a water molecule. Complex 7 is a square-planar complex with the Ni atom bonded to four oxygen atoms from two hap moieties. The mononuclear units of 2 and dinuclear units of 3 are linked by strong hydrogen bonds to form a one-dimensional network. The mononuclear units of 5 and 6 are joined together to form a dimer by very strong hydrogen bonds through the coordinated water molecule. These dimers are further involved in hydrogen bonding with the respective counteranions to form 2-D net-like open frameworks. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008).

Anion directed, template syntheses of two dinuclear copper(II) complexes of mono-condensed Schiff base ligand Hdipn (4-[(3-aminopentylimino)-methyl]-benzene-1,3-diol) involving 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopentane were realized in the presence of bridging azide and acetate anions. Both complexes, [Cu-2(dipn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) and [Cu-2(dip(n))(2)(OAc)(2)] (2) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two mononuclear units are joined together by basal-apical, double end-on azido bridges in complex 1 and by basal-apical, double mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridges in 2. Both complexes form rectangular grid-like supramolecular structures via H-bonds connecting the azide or acetate anion and the p-hydroxy group of 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 has antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.10 cm (1)) through the azide bridge while 2 has intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling through the acetate bridge and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic coupling through H-bonds (J = 2.85 cm (1), J' = -1.08 cm (1)). Three new mononuclear complexes of nitrogen-sulfur donor sets, formulated as (Fe-II(L)Cl-2] (1), [Co-II(L)Cl-2] (2) and [Ni-II(L)Cl-2] (3) where L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane, were synthesized and isolated in their pure form. All the complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The solid state structures of complexes I and 3 have been established by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structural analysis evidences isomorphous crystals with the metal ion in a distorted octahedral geometry that comprises NSSN ligand donors with trans located pyridine rings and chlorides in cis positions. In dimethylformamide solution, the complexes were found to exhibit Fe-II/Fe-III, co(II)/co(III) and Ni-II/Ni-III quasi-reversible redox couples in cyclic voltammograms with E-1/2 values (versus Ag/AgCl at 298 K) of +0.295, +0.795 and +0.745 V for 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The synthesis, characterisation, X-ray single crystal structures and magnetic properties of three new basal-apical mu(2)-1,1-azide-bridged complexes [(CuLN3)-N-1](2) (1), [(CuLN3)-N-2](2) (2) and [(CuLN3)-N-3](2) (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff-base blocking ligands {HL1 = N-[2-(ethylamino) ethyl] salicylaldimine; HL2 = 7-(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one; HL3 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one} have been reported [complex 1: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.390(2), b = 7.512(2), c = 19.822(6) Angstrom, beta = 91.45(5)degrees; complex 2: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.070(9), b = 9.787(12), c = 15.743(17) A, beta = 98.467(10)degrees; complex 3: monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 5.884(7), b = 16.147(18), c = 11.901(12) Angstrom, beta = 90.050(10)degrees]. The structures consist of neutral dinuclear entities resulting from the pairing of two mononuclear units through end-on azide bridges connecting an equatorial position of one copper centre to an axial position of the other, The copper ions adopt a (4+1) square-based geometry in all the complexes. In complex 2, there is no inter-dimer hydrogen-bonding. However, complexes 1 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic-susceptibility measurements and magnetisation measurements at 2 K reveal that all three complexes have antiferromagnetic coupling. Magneto-structural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Two tridentate Schiff bases, HL1(6-amino-3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-azahex-2-en-1-one), and HL2 (6-atnino-3,6-dimethyl-1-phenyl-4-azahex-2-en-1-one) on reaction with Cu(II) perchlorate in the presence of triethyl amine yielded two new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2) (1) and [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2) center dot 0.75H(2)O (2), whereas another tridentate ligand HL3 (7-amino-3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-azahept-2-en-1-one) underwent hydrolysis under the same reaction conditions to result in the formation of a mononuclear complex, [Cu(bn)(pn)ClO4] (3) [where bn = 1-benzoylacetonate and pn = 1,3-propanediamine]. All three complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. For both 1 and 2 the cationic part is trinuclear with a [Cu3OH] core held by three carbonyl oxygen bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The structure of 3 is a monomer with a chelating 1,3-propanediamine and a benzoyl acetone moiety. Magnetic measurements of I and 2 have been performed in the 2-300 K temperature range. The experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S1S2 + S2S3 + S1S3), yielding as best fit parameters: J = -25.6 cm(-1), g = 2.21 for 1 and J = 11.2 cm(-1), g = 2.10 for 2. The EPR spectra at low temperature could be indicative of spin frustration in complex 1. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two mononuclear and one dinuclear copper(II) complexes, containing neutral tetradentate NSSN type ligands, of formulation [Cu-II(L-1)Cl]ClO4 (1), [Cu-II(L-2)Cl]ClO4 (2) and [Cu-2(II)(L-3)(2)Cl-2](ClO4)(2) (3) were synthesized and isolated in pure form [where L-1 = 1,2-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)ethane, L-2 = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane and L-3 = 1,4-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)butane]. All these green colored copper(II) complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The dinuclear copper(II) complex 3 changed to a colorless dinuclear copper(I) species of formula [Cu-2(1)(L-3)(2)](ClO4)(2),0.5H(2)O (4) in dimethylformamide even in the presence of air at ambient temperature, while complexes I and 2 showed no change under similar conditions. The solid-state structures of complexes 1, 2 and 4 were established by X-ray crystallography. The geometry about the copper in complexes 1 and 2 is trigonal bipyramidal whereas the coordination environment about the copper(I) in dinuclear complex 4 is distorted tetrahedral. Two new hexa-coordinated mononuclear copper(II) complexes of two ligands L-1 and L-2 containing NSSN donor sets formulated as [Cu(L)(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2) [1a, L = 1,2-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)ethane (L-1), 1b L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridyl-methylthio)propane (L-2)] were synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. In 1a the single crystal X-ray crystallography analysis showed a distorted octahedral geometry about copper(II) ion. The crystal packing evidences pairs of complexes arranged about a center of symmetry and connected through a H-bond occurring between aquo ligands and nitrate anions. On reaction with chloride and pseudohalides (N-3(-) and SCN-), in acetonitrile at ambient temperature. complexes 1 changed to monocationic penta-coordinated mononuclear copper(H) species formulated as [Cu(L)(Cl)]NO3 (2), [Cu(L)(N-3)]NO3 (3). and [Cu(L)(SCN)]NO3 (4). These copper(II) complexes have been isolated in pure form from the reaction mixtures and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic tools. The solid-state structure of 2a, established by X-ray crystallography, shows a trigonal bipyramidal geometry about the metal ion with a trigonality index (tau) of 0.561. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. oxovanadium(V) salicylhydroximate complexes, [VO(SHA)(H2O)]center dot 1.58H(2)O (1) and [V3O3(CSHA)(3) (H2O)(3)]center dot 3CH(3)COCH(3) (2) have been synthesized by reaction of VO43- with N-salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHAHS) and N-(5-chlorosalicyl) hydroxamic acid (CSHAH(3)), respectively, in methanol medium. Compound 1 on reaction with pyridine 2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PyDCH2) yields mononuclear complex [VO(SHAH(2))(PyDC)] (3). Treatment of compound 3 with hydrogen peroxide at low pH (2-3) and low temperature (0-5 degrees C) yields a stable oxoperoxovanadium(V) complex H[VO(O-2)(PyDC)(H2O)]center dot 2.5H(2)O (4). All four complexes (1-4) have been characterized by spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis, V-51 NMR) and single crystal X-ray analyses. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds link complex 1 into hexanuclear clusters consisting of six {VNO5} octahedra surrounded by twelve {VNO5} octahedra to form an annular ring. While the molecular packing in 2 generates a two-dimensional framework hydrogen bonds involving the solvent acetone molecules, the mononuclear complexes 3 and 4 exhibit three-dimensional supramolecular architecture. The compounds 1 and 2 behave as good catalysts for oxygenation of benzylic, aromatic, carbocyclic and aliphatic hydrocarbons to their corresponding hydroxylated and oxygenated products using H2O2 as terminal oxidant; the process affords very good yield and turnover number. The catalysis work shows that cyclohexane is a very easily oxidizable substrate giving the highest turnover number (TON) while n-hexane and n-heptane show limited yield, longer time involvement and lesser TON than other hydrocarbons. Reaction of the tridentate ONO Schiff-base ligand 2-hydroxybenzoylhydrazone of 2-hydroxybenzoylhydrazine (H2L) with VO(acac)(2) in ethanol medium produces the oxoethoxovanadium(V) complex [VO(OEt)L] (A), which reacts with pyridine to form [VO(OEt)L center dot(py)] (1). Complex 1 is structurally characterized. It has a distorted octahedral O4N2 coordination environment around the V(V) acceptor center. Both complexes A and 1 in ethanol medium react with neutral monodentate Lewis bases 2-picoline, 3-picoline, 4-picoline, 4-amino pyridine, imidazole, and 4-methyl imidazole, all of which are stronger bases than pyridine, to produce dioxovanadium(V) complexes of general formula BH[VO2L]. Most of these dioxo complexes are structurally characterized, and the complex anion [VO2L](-) is found to possess a distorted square pyramidal structure. When a solution/suspension of a BH[VO2L] complex in an alcohol (ROH) is treated with HCl in the same alcohol, it is converted into the corresponding monooxoalkoxo complex [ O(OR)L], where R comes from the alcohol used as the reaction medium. Both complexes A and 1 produce the 4,4'-bipyridine-bridged binuclear complex [VO(OEt)L](2)(mu-4,4'-bipy) (2), which, to the best of our knowledge, represents the first report of a structurally characterized 4,4'-bipyridine-bridged oxovanadium(V) binuclear complex. Two similar binuclear oxovanadium(V) complexes 3 and 4 are also synthesized and characterized. All these binuclear complexes (2-4), on treatment with base B, produce the corresponding mononuclear dioxovanadium(V) complexes (5-10).

A new chromium-antimony-sulfide, [Cr(C6H18N4)(SbS3)], has been synthesised under solvothermal conditions from CrCl3. 6H(2)O, Sb2S3 and S in the presence of triethylenetetramine at 433 K and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, elemental analysis and SQUID magnetometry. The structure of [Cr(C6H18N4)(SbS3)] consists of neutral mononuclear chromium-centred complexes, in which the Cr3+ is chelated by one tetradentate triethylenetetramine molecule and a bidentate SbS33- ligand, yielding distorted octahedral coordination. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds link individual molecules into layers within the ac plane. Within a layer, molecules occur in pairs with each member related by a centre of inversion. The Cr...Cr separation within a pair is approximately 6.5 Angstrom. Magnetic susceptibility data reveal Curie-Weiss behaviour with mu(eff) = 3.819(3)/mu(B) and a negligible Weiss constant, indicative of non-interacting Cr3+ ions. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Background: Animal studies have suggested that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a natural component of ruminant meat and dairy products, may confer beneficial effects on health. However, little information on the effects of CLA on immune function is available, especially in humans. Furthermore, the effects of individual isomers of CLA have not been adequately investigated. Objective: This study investigated the effects of supplementing the diet with 3 doses of highly enriched cis-9,trans-11 CLA (0.59, 1.19, and 2.38 g/d) or trans-10,cis-12 CLA (0.63, 1.26, and 2.52 g/d) on immune outcomes in healthy humans. Design: The study had a randomized, double-blind, crossover design. Healthy men consumed 1, 2, and 4 capsules sequentially that contained 80% of either cis-9,trans-11 CLA or trans-10,cis-12 CLA for consecutive 8-wk periods. This regimen was followed by a 6-wk washout and a crossover to the other isomer. Results: Both CLA isomers decreased mitogen-induced T lymphocyte activation in a dose-dependent manner. There was a significant negative correlation between mitogen-induced T lymphocyte activation and the proportions of both cis-9,trans-11 CLA and trans-10,cis-12 CLA in peripheral blood mononuclear cell lipids. However, CLA did not affect lymphocyte subpopulations or serum concentrations of C-reactive protein and did not have any consistent effects on ex vivo cytokine production. Conclusion: CLA supplementation results in a dose-dependent reduction in the mitogen-induced activation of T lymphocytes. The effects of cis-9,trans-l I CLA and trans-10,cis-12 CLA were similar, and there was a negative correlation between mitogen-induced T lymphocyte activation and the cis-9,trans-11 CLA and trans-10,cis-12 CLA contents of mononuclear cells.

Background: Animal studies suggest that prebiotics and probiotics exert protective effects against tumor development in the colon, but human data supporting this suggestion are weak. Objective: The objective was to verify whether the prebiotic concept (selective interaction with colonic flora of nondigested carbohydrates) as induced by a synbiotic preparation-oligofructose-enriched inulin (SYN1) + Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 (BB12)-is able to reduce the risk of colon cancer in humans. Design: The 12-wk randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a synbiotic food composed of the prebiotic SYN1 and probiotics LGG and BB12 was conducted in 37 colon cancer patients and 43 polypectomized patients. Fecal and blood samples were obtained before, during, and after the intervention, and colorectal biopsy samples were obtained before and after the intervention. The effect of synbiotic consumption on a battery of intermediate biomarkers for colon cancer was examined. Results: Synbiotic intervention resulted in significant changes in fecal flora: Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus increased and Clostridium perfringens decreased. The intervention significantly reduced colorectal proliferation and the capacity of fecal water to induce necrosis in colonic cells and improve epithelial barrier function in polypectomized patients. Genotoxicity assays of colonic biopsy samples indicated a decreased exposure to genotoxins in polypectomized patients at the end of the intervention period. Synbiotic consumption prevented an increased secretion of interleukin 2 by peripheral blood mononuclear cells in the polypectomized patients and increased the production of interferon gamma in the cancer patients. Conclusions: Several colorectal cancer biomarkers can be altered favorably by synbiotic intervention.
