Highly ordered mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) with different compositions have been synthesized by a combination of surfactant templating, sol-gel method and evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) processes. The texture properties and compositional homogeneity of MBGs have been characterized and compared with conventional bioactive glasses (BGs) synthesized in the absence of surfactants by evaporation method. The formation mechanism (pore - composition dependence) and compositional homogeneity in the case of MBG materials are different from those in conventional BGs. Unlike conventional sol-gel-derived BGs that shows a direct correlation between their composition and pore architecture, MBGs with different compositions may possess similar pore volume and uniformly distributed pore size when the same structure-directing agent is utilized. There has been much interest in the development of iron (Fe) chelators for the treatment of cancer. We developed a series of di-2-pyridyl ketone thiosemicarbazone (HDpT) ligands which show marked and selective antitumor activity in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we assessed chemical and biological properties of these ligands and their Fe complexes in order to understand their marked activity. This included examination of their solution chemistry, electrochemistry, ability to mediate redox reactions, and antiproliferative activity against tumor cells. The higher antiproliferative efficacy of the HDpT series of chelators relative to the related di-2-pyridyl ketone isonicotinoyl hydrazone (HPKIH) analogues can be ascribed, in part, to the redox potentials of their Fe complexes which lead to the generation of reactive oxygen species. The most effective HDpT ligands as antiproliferative agents possess considerable lipophilicity and were shown to be charge neutral at physiological pH, allowing access to intracellular Fe pools.

By using a complex field with a symmetric combination of electric and magnetic fields, a first-order covariant Lagrangian for Maxwell's equations is obtained, similar to the Lagrangian for the Dirac equation. This leads to a dual-symmetric quantum electrodynamic theory with an infinite set of local conservation laws. The dual symmetry is shown to correspond to a helical phase, conjugate to the conserved helicity. There is also a scaling symmetry, conjugate to the conserved entanglement. The results include a novel form of the photonic wavefunction, with a well-defined helicity number operator conjugate to the chiral phase, related to the fundamental dual symmetry. Interactions with charged particles can also be included. Transformations from minimal coupling to multi-polar or more general forms of coupling are particularly straightforward using this technique. The dual-symmetric version of quantum electrodynamics derived here has potential applications to nonlinear quantum optics and cavity quantum electrodynamics.

The performance of the positive P phase-space representation for exact many- body quantum dynamics is investigated. Gases of interacting bosons are considered, where the full quantum equations to simulate are of a Gross-Pitaevskii form with added Gaussian noise. This method gives tractable simulations of many-body systems because the number of variables scales linearly with the spatial lattice size. An expression for the useful simulation time is obtained, and checked in numerical simulations. The dynamics of first-, second- and third-order spatial correlations are calculated for a uniform interacting 1D Bose gas subjected to a change in scattering length. Propagation of correlations is seen. A comparison is made with other recent methods. The positive P method is particularly well suited to open systems as no conservation laws are hard-wired into the calculation. It also differs from most other recent approaches in that there is no truncation of any kind.

Många muslimska kvinnor utsatts för ett omfattande förtryck med våld som yttersta sanktion. Somliga skulle säga att alla muslimska kvinnor utsatts för förtryck. Återigen andra skule säga att överhuvudtaget alla kvinnor i majoriteten av världens kulturer i någon form är förtryckta. Debatten om kvinnors möjligheter och rättigheter har förts upp på den samhällspolitiska agendan och attraherar allt fler deltagare. I svensk samhällsdebatt ägnas den muslimska slöjan som symbol för repression ett relativt stort utrymme och engagerar människor på såväl akademisk, politisk som vardaglig nivå. Detta innefattar svenskar utan egna erfarenheter av utövande av islamiska påbud, svenska konvertiter utan erfarenheter av att leva i muslimska samhällen och muslimer vars erfarenheter har formatt dem att aktivt ta ställning mot slojan. I denna uppsats vill jag, utan normativa förtecken, låta två muslimska kvinnor med ett till synes mer positivt eller neutralt förhållande till slöjan komma till tals. Syftet ar att undersöka deras relation till slöjan och hur denna eventuellt förändras i en svensk kontext. Genom att ge kvinnornas berättelser om deras egen praktik och erfarenhet utrymme hoppas jälva och med andra informanter hade andra perspektiv på denna komplexa frågeställning hamnat i fokus.

Sammanfattning Studiens fokus var dels vilka kategorier av innehåll som framkom i lärarnas kommunikation dels vilka förändringar i innehållet som uttolkades i matematiklärares kommunikation i början och i slutet av ett kompetensutvecklingsprojekt. Kontexten i kompetensutvecklingsprojektet var i form av modellen learning study, där sju lärarlag, sammanlagt 20 lärare deltagit. Ramverket i studien var tematisk analys, analys av matematiska kompetenser samt funktionell textanalys. Studiens resultat visar på flera förändringar, till exempel att de fem uttolkade huvudkategorierna innefattade fler underkategorier i slutet av kompetensutvecklingsprojektet. När det gäller matematiskt innehåll så visar analysen att lärarna kommunicerade matematika kompetenser på ett mer mångfacetterat sätt i slutet av kompetensutvecklingsprojektet. Då lärarna kommunicerade matematikundervisning använde de sig till viss del av ett annat sätt att uttrycka sig i slutet än i början av kompetensutvecklingsprojektet. I början talade de till exempel om att höra vad eleverna uttrycker till att i slutet använda sig av ordet lyssna. Resultatet visade även förändringar avseende hur lärarna samtalade om laborativt material. Fokus har flyttats från det laborativa materialet till att lärarna funderade över vilken matematik som eleverna uttryckte med hjälp av det laborativa materialet.

Yorick Wilks is a central figure in the fields of Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence. His influence extends to many areas and includes contributions to Machines Translation, word sense disambiguation, dialogue modeling and Information Extraction. This book celebrates the work of Yorick Wilks in the form of a selection of his papers which are intended to reflect the range and depth of his work. The volume accompanies a Festschrift which celebrates his contribution to the fields of Computational Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence. The papers include early work carried out at Cambridge University, descriptions of groundbreaking work on Machine Translation and Preference Semantics as well as more recent works on belief modeling and computational semantics. The selected papers reflect Yorick’s contribution to both practical and theoretical aspects of automatic language processing.

Research interviews are a form of interaction jointly constructed by the interviewer and interviewee, what Silverman (2001: 104) calls 'interview-as-local-accomplishment'. From this perspective, interviews are an interpretative practice in which what is said is inextricably tied to where it is said, how it is said and, importantly, to whom it is said (Holstein and Gubrium, 2004). The relationship between interviewer and interviewee, then, is fundamental in research interviews. But what happens when the relationship between interviewer and interviewee is not only that of researcher-informant but also involves other roles such as colleague and friend? In this article we will show how prior relationships are invoked and made relevant by both parties during educational research interviews and how these prior relationships therefore contribute to the 'generation' (Baker, 2004: 163) of interview data. © 2010 The Author(s).

Antigenic peptide is presented to a T-cell receptor (TCR) through the formation of a stable complex with a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecule. Various predictive algorithms have been developed to estimate a peptide's capacity to form a stable complex with a given MHC class II allele, a technique integral to the strategy of vaccine design. These have previously incorporated such computational techniques as quantitative matrices and neural networks. A novel predictive technique is described, which uses molecular modeling of predetermined crystal structures to estimate the stability of an MHC class II-peptide complex. The structures are remodeled, energy minimized, and annealed before the energetic interaction is calculated.
