Gender-fair language, that is, referring to men and women with symmetrical linguistic forms, has been found to promote gender equality, but it is largely unknown which factors help make gender-fair forms more common in everyday life. Two studies examined whether speakers of German used more gender-fair forms after reading a text with gender-fair wording (vs. masculine generics vs. no personal nouns vs. another topic). Both studies showed consistently that women used more gender-fair forms after reading the gender-fair text than the other texts, whereas men did not. Men employed more gender-fair forms only after being made aware of these forms (Study 2). To conclude, merely reading gender-fair texts enhances women’s inclination to use gender-fair language, whereas men need to be made aware of this type of language use. Both studies highlight the importance of using gender-fair language frequently and consistently in everyday life.

The authors investigated the structure and correlates of DSM-5 maladaptive personality traits in two samples of 577 students and 212 inpatients using the German self-report form of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5. They found that (a) the factor structure of DSM-5 trait facets is largely in line with the proposed trait domains of Negative Affectivity, Detachment, Antagonism, Disinhibition, and Psychoticism; (b) all DSM-5 trait domains except Psychoticism are highly related to the respective domains of the Five-Factor Model of personality; (c) the trait facets are positively associated with a self-report measure of general personality dysfunction; and (d) the DSM-5 trait facets show differential associations with a range of self-reported DSM-IV Axis I disorders. Der Erste Weltkrieg war – das hatten deutsche Militärs vor 1914 schon erwartet – von Beginn weg ein globaler Krieg. Grossbritannien und Frankreich setzten nämlich schon ab den ersten Monaten Truppen aus anderen Teilen der Welt auch in Europa ein. Dazu gehörten auch Soldaten aus Australien, Neuseeland und Indien. Teile letzterer kämpften schon im Herbst 1914 in Nordfrankreich und Belgien mit, andere waren ab April 1915 auf der türkischen Halbinsel Gallipoli aktiv. Dort kamen erstmals auch australische und neuseeländische Soldaten und Offiziere zum Einsatz. Ab 1916 wurden diese dann zu grossen Teilen an der Westfront verlegt, während die meisten indischen Verbände ab diesem Zeitpunkt im Nahen Osten zum Einsatz kamen. Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht auf der Grundlage von Selbstzeugnissen und Fremdbeschreibungen an exemplarischen Beispielen aufzuzeigen, wie es dazu kam, dass Soldaten und Offiziere aus Australien, Neuseeland und Indien in Gallipoli und an der Westfront zum Einsatz kamen, welches ihre Motivationen und Ziele waren, inwiefern sie sich dabei als Minderheit verstanden und welche Vorstellungen sie mit Blick auf ihre Rolle bzw. die Rolle ihrer Heimat nach dem Krieg hatten. Zum Schluss soll noch ein kurzer Blick auf die Bedeutsamkeit dieser Soldaten im Rahmen der nationalen und regionalen Erinnerungskultur in den drei Ländern geworfen werden.

Recent research on wordhood and morphosyntactic boundness suggests that the domains word and clitic do not lend themselves to cross-linguistic categorization but must be defined language specifically. In most languages, it is necessary to define word on two separate levels, the phonological word (p-word) and the grammatical word (g-word), and to describe mismatches between the two. This paper defines those domains for Garifuna, an Arawak language spoken in Honduras, Central America. Garifuna has auxiliary and classifier constructions which make up two p-words, and only one g-word. P-words made up of more than one g-word involve second position enclitics, word scope clitics, and proclitic connectives and prepositions. Garifuna clitics are typically unstressed, able to attach to hosts of any word class and able to string together into clusters. Enclitics are used to express tense-aspect, modality, and adverbial meanings, among others. In other languages, clitic clusters tend to display a fixed order; Garifuna clitic order seems quite free, although certain orders are preferred. Also, contrary to cross-linguistic tendencies, proclitic connectives can act as hosts for enclitic clusters, contradicting the commonly used definition of clitics as phonologically weak elements that need to attach to a host to form a p-word; such clitic-only p-words are problematic for traditional definitions of clitics.

The Qing emperors, who ruled over China from 1644-1911, managed to bring large parts of Inner Asia under their control and extended the territory of China to an unprecedented degree. This paper maintains that the political technique of patronage with its formalized language, its emphasis on gift exchange and expressions of courtesy is a useful concept for explaining the integration of Inner Asian confederations into the empire. By re-interpreting the obligations of gift exchange, the Qing transformed the network of personal relationships, which had to be reinforced and consolidated permanently into a system with clearly defined rules. In this process of formalization, the Lifanyuan, the Court for the Administration of the Outer Regions, played a key role. While in the early years of the dynasty, it was responsible for collecting and disseminating information concerning the various patronage relationships with Inner Asian leaders, over the course of the 17th and 18th centuries its efforts were directed at standardizing and streamlining the contacts between ethnic minorities and the state. Through the Lifanyuan, the rules and principles of patronage were maintained in a modified form even in the later part of the dynasty, when the Qing exercised control in the outer regions more directly. The paper provides an explanation for the longevity and cohesiveness of the multi-ethnic Qing empire. Based on recently published Manchu and Mongolian language archival material and the Maussian concept of gift exchange the study sheds new light on the changing self-conception of the Qing emperors.
