In this paper, we report the synthesis and self assembly of various sizes of ZnO nanocrystals. While the crystal structure and the quantum confinement of nanocrystals were mainly characterized using XRD and UV absorption spectra, the self assembly and long range ordering were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy after spin casting the nanocrystal film on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface. We observe self assembly of these nanocrystals over large areas making them ideal candidates for various potential applications. Further, the electronic structure of the individual dots is obtained from the current-voltage characteristics of the dots using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and compared with the density of states obtained from the tight binding calculations. We observe an excellent agreement with the experimentally obtained local density of states and the theoretically calculated density of states.

The current voltage characteristics ofo-tolidine-iodine, with stoichiometry 1:1 grown from benzene, have been studied under high pressures upto 6 GPa atT=300 K andT=77 K. The characteristics show a pronounced deviation from ohmicity beyond a certain current for all pressures studied. At room temperature, beyond a threshold field the system switches from a low conductingOFF state to a high conductingON state with σON/σOFF ∼ 103. TheOFF state can be restored by the application of an a.c. pulse of low frequency. The temperature dependence of the two states studied indicates that theOFF state is semiconducting while theON state, beyond a certain applied pressure is metallic. The characteristics atT=77 K do not show any switching.

The 1H and 13C chemical shifts, characteristic vibrational frequencies and force constants for some substituted azolidines are correlated with the results of the CNDO/2 calculations. The influence of the exo and endo heteroatoms on the electronic structure of the heterocyclic ring are discussed.

The infrared spectra of monothiodiacetamide (MTDA, CHaCONHCSCH3) and its N-deuterated compound in solution, solid state and at low temperature are measured. Normal coordinate analysis for the planar vibrations of MTDAd o and -dl have been performed for the two most probable cis-trans-CONHCSor -CSNHCO-conformers using a simple Urey-Bradley force function. The conformation of MTDA derived from the vibrational spectra is supported by the all valence CNDO/2 molecular orbital method. The vibrational assignments and the electronic structure of MTDA are also given.

In vitro methyiation of Escherichia coli transfer ribonucleic acid by cell free extracts of Mycobacterium smegmatis leads exclusively to the formation of 1-methyl adenine [Vani, B. R., Ramakrishnan, T., Taya, Y., Noguchi, S., Yamaiuzumi, Z. and Nishimura, S.(1978) J. Bact., 137,1085]. We have studied the effect of this modification on aminoacylation of Escherichia coli tRNA by mycobacterial enzymes. Aminoacylation with total algal protein hydrolysate as well as several individual aminoacids like methionine, valine, tyrosine, aspartic acid and lysine were monitored. In all the cases methyiation had a positive effect on the extent of aminoacylation by mycobacterial enzymes. Decreased aminoacylation in vitro was observed when hypomethylated transfer RNA from ethionine treated cells was used as the substrate for aminoacylation.

The crystal structure of 1,3-di benzyl -2 - (4,4-dimet hyl- 2,5- bist hioxocyclo hexylidene) imidazolidine (2) shows a twist of 80.8(5)' about the inter-ring bond, which has a length of 1.482(6) A. The near orthogonality of the donor and acceptor parts of this formal push-pull ethylene makes the structure approach that of a zwitterion, as evidenced by bond lengths indicating strong electron delocalization. The acceptor part approaches a vinylogous dithioate structure, the donor part an amidinium system. The U.V. spectrum shows an n + R and a R + R transition, at 51 1 and 41 7.5 nm, respectively; according to CNDO/S calculations these are located entirely in the [S-C-C-C-SI- part. Two bands at shorter wavelength are ascribed to transitions from combinations of the lone-pair orbitals on the sulphur atoms to a n* orbital in the [N-C-N] + part; this is facilitated by the near perpendicularity of the two parts of the molecule.

The interactions of benzo-15-crown-5, dibenzo-18-crown-6, and dibenzo-24-crown-8 with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano- 1,4-benzoquinone have been studied in methylene chloride by using spectroscopic methods. These crown ethers from 1:l molecular complexes with the acceptor. The magnitudes of association constants and thermodynamic parameters of complexation are indicative of cooperative interaction of oxygens with the acceptor.

The current study of Scandinavian multinational corporate subsidiaries in the rapidly growing Eastern European market, due to their particular organizational structure, attempts to gain some new insights into processes and potential benefits of knowledge and technology transfer. This study explores how to succeed in knowledge transfer and to become more competitive, driven by the need to improve transfer of systematic knowledge for the manufacture of product and service provisions in newly entered market. The scope of current research is exactly limited to multinational corporations, which are defined as enterprises comprising entities in two or more countries, regardless of legal forms and field of activity of those entities, and which operate under a system of decision-making permitting coherent policies and a common strategy through one or more decision-making centers. The entities are linked, by ownership, and able to exercise influence over the activities of the others; and, in particular, to share the knowledge, resources, and responsibilities with others. The research question is "How and to which extent can knowledge-transfer influence a company's technological competence and economic competitiveness?" and try to find out what particular forces and factors affect the development of subsidiary competencies; what factors influence the corporate integration and use of the subsidiary's competencies; and what may increase competitiveness of MNC pursuing leading position in entered market. The empirical part of the research was based on qualitative analyses of twenty interviews conducted among employees in Scandinavian MNC subsidiary units situated in Ukraine, using structured sequence of questions with open-ended answers. The data was investigated by comparison case analyses to literature framework. Findings indicate that a technological competence developed in one subsidiary will lead to an integration of that competence with other corporate units within the MNC. Success increasingly depends upon people's learning. The local economic area is crucial for understanding competition and industrial performance, as there seems to be a clear link between the performance of subsidiaries and the conditions prevailing in their environment. The linkage between competitive advantage and company's success is mutually dependent. Observation suggests that companies can be characterized as clusters of complementary activities such as R&D, administration, marketing, manufacturing and distribution. Study identifies barriers and obstacles in technology and knowledge transfer that is relevant for the subsidiaries' competence development. The accumulated experience can be implemented in new entered market with simple procedures, and at a low cost under specific circumstances, by cloning. The main goal is focused to support company prosperity, making more profits and sustaining an increased market share by improved product quality and/or reduced production cost of the subsidiaries through cloning approach. Chick embryo tRNA, prepared by a simple large-scale method, was fractionated on three different ion-exchange columns. In all cases simple chromatographic patterns for various tRNA species were observed, indicating the presence of only a few major species of tRNA for each amino acid. By repeated chromatography one species of alanine tRNA was purified to approx. 80% purity. T1 ribonuclease digest of this purified tRNA gave a simple chromatographic pattern. Because of the simplicity of the method of preparation of tRNA from this readily available source and the presence of only a few species of tRNA for each amino acid, chick embryo is suited for the study of tRNA and its various functions in higher systems.

A simple semiempirical quantum chemical approach (Extended Huckel Theory) is shown to give a reasonable description of the electronic structural aspects of chemisorption on the mercury model surface. Chemisorptive interaction of alkali metal atoms and cations, halogen atoms and anions, and water molecules with a charge-neutralized hexagonal close-packed cluster of seven Hg atoms is studied. Adsorption of H, C, N and O atoms on the same model cluster is studied for comparison with earlier work. Chemisorption energies, charge transfer, interaction distance and hydration effects are discussed and compared with experimental results where available.

Structural stability of small sized nonstoichiometric CdS nano clusters between zincblende and wurtzite structures has been investigated using first-principles density functional calculations. Our study shows that the relative stability of these two structures depends sensitively on whether the surface is S-terminated or Cd-terminated. The associated band gap also exhibits non-monotonic behavior as a function of cluster size. Our findings may shed light on contradictory reports of experimentally observed structures of CdS nano clusters found in the literature.
