The Antarctic Polar Front is an important biogeochemical divider in the Southern Ocean. Laminated diatom mat deposits record episodes of massive flux of the diatom Thalassiothrix antarctica beneath the Antarctic Polar Front and provide a marker for tracking the migration of the Front through time. Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1091, 1093 and 1094 are the only deep piston cored record hitherto sampled from the sediments of the circumpolar biogenic opal belt. Mapping of diatom mat deposits between these sites indicates a glacial-interglacial front migration of up to 6 degrees of latitude in the early/mid Pleistocene. The mid-Pleistocene transition marks a stepwise minimum 7° northward migration of the locus of the Polar Front sustained for about 450 kyr until an abrupt southward return to a locus similar to its modern position and further south than any mid-Pleistocene locus. This interval from a "900 ka event" that saw major cooling of the oceans and a d13C minimum through to the 424 ka Mid-Brunhes Event at Termination V is also seemingly characterised by 1) sustained decreased carbonate in the sub-tropical south Atlantic, 2) reduced strength of Antarctic deep meridional circulation, 3) lower interglacial temperatures and lower interglacial atmospheric CO2 levels (by some 30 per mil) than those of the last 400 kyr, evidencing less complete deglaciation. This evidence is consistent with a prolonged period lasting 450 kyr of only partial ventilation of the deep ocean during interglacials and suggests that the mechanisms highlighted by recent hypotheses linking mid-latitude atmospheric conditions to the extent of deep ocean ventilation and carbon sequestration over glacial-interglacial cycles are likely in operation during the longer time scale characteristic of the mid-Pleistocene transition. The cooling that initiated the "900 ka event" may have been driven by minima in insolation amplitude related to eccentricity modulation of precession that also affected low latitude climates as marked by threshold changes in the African monsoon system. The major thresholds in earth system behaviour through the mid-Pleistocene transition were likely governed by an interplay of the 100 kyr and 400 kyr eccentricity modulation of precession.

The last interglacial period (about 125,000 years ago) is thought to have been at least as warm as the present climate (Kukla et al., 2002, doi:10.1006/qres.2001.2316). Owing to changes in the Earth's orbit around the Sun, it is thought that insolation in the Northern Hemisphere varied more strongly than today on seasonal timescales (Berger, 1987, doi:10.1175/1520-0469(1978)035<2362:LTVODI>2.0.CO;2), which would have led to corresponding changes in the seasonal temperature cycle (Montoya et al., 2000, doi:10.1175/1520-0442(2000)013<1057:CSFKBW>2.0.CO;2). Here we present seasonally resolved proxy records using corals from the northernmost Red Sea, which record climate during the last interglacial period, the late Holocene epoch and the present. We find an increased seasonality in the temperature recorded in the last interglacial coral. Today, climate in the northern Red Sea is sensitive to the North Atlantic Oscillation (Felis et al., 2000 doi:10.1029/1999PA000477; Rimbu et al., 2001, doi:10.1029/2001GL013083), a climate oscillation that strongly influences winter temperatures and precipitation in the North Atlantic region. From our coral records and simulations with a coupled atmosphere-ocean circulation model, we conclude that a tendency towards the high-index state of the North Atlantic Oscillation during the last interglacial period, which is consistent with European proxy records (Zagwijn, 1996, doi:10.1016/0277-3791(96)00011-X; Aalbersberg and Litt, 1998, doi:10.1002/(SICI)1099-1417(1998090)13:5<367::AID-JQS400>3.0.CO;2-I; Klotz et al., 2003, doi:10.1016/S0921-8181(02)00222-9), contributed to the larger amplitude of the seasonal cycle in the Middle East.

Analysis of rare earth element (REE) distribution and behavior in ore-bearing hydrothermal-sedimentary deposits from the Red Sea is carried out. Geochemical patterns and mechanisms of REE accumulation in metalliferous sediments of the open ocean and in deposits adjoined to areas of hydrothermal discharge are shown. Main factors, which determine composition of REE and the level of their accumulation in hydrothermal occurrences of the Red Sea, are considered.

Current attempts to understand climatic variability during the early to middle Pliocene require paleoceanographic information from the Pacific and Indian Oceans that may serve to test and/or constrain future circulation models. Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 885/886 are located in the central subarctic North Pacific at water depths exceeding 5700 m. Recent studies of rock magnetic properties suggest that the fine-grained Fe oxide component in sediment at Sites 885/886 experienced reductive dissolution during the early-middle Gilbert. Because such an interval in the North Pacific Red Clay Province suggests a maximum in the sedimentary flux of organic carbon and/or a minimum in bottom water dissolved O2 concentrations (and hence, a peak change in North Pacific oceanographic conditions), a geochemical investigation was conducted to test the hypothesis. Quaternary sediment at Hole 886B was subjected to an oxyhydroxide removal procedure, and chemical analyses indicate that bulk sediment concentrations of Fe and the Fe/Sc ratio decrease significantly upon reductive dissolution. Downcore chemical analyses of untreated sediment at Hole 886B demonstrate that similar depletions also occur across the proposed interval of reduced sediment. Downcore chemical analyses also indicate that a pronounced increase in the Ba/Sc ratio occurs across the interval. These results are consistent with an interpretation that abyssal sediment of the North Pacific experienced a decrease in redox conditions during the early-middle Gilbert, and that this change in oxidation state was related to a peak in paleoproductivity. If the zenith of late Miocene to middle Pliocene enhanced productivity observed at other Indo-Pacific divergence regions similarly can be constrained to the early-middle Gilbert, there exists an oceanographic boundary condition in which to test future models concerning Pliocene warmth.

In order to assess the ability of Porites corals to accurately record environmental variations, high-resolution (weekly/biweekly) coral delta18O records were obtained from four coral colonies from the northern Gulf of Aqaba, which grew at depths of 7, 19, 29, and 42 m along one transect. Adjacent to each colony, hourly temperatures, biweekly salinities, and monthly delta18O of seawater were continuously recorded over a period of 14 months (April 1999 to June 2000). Contrary to water temperature, which shows a regular and strong seasonal variation and change with depth, seawater delta18O exhibits a weak seasonality and little change with depth. Positive correlations between seawater delta18O and salinity were observed. The two parameters were related to each other by the equation delta18O Seawater (per mil, VSMOW) = 0.281 * Salinity - 9.14. The high-resolution coral delta18O records from this study show a regular pattern of seasonality and are able to capture fine details of the weekly average temperature records. They resolve more than 95% of the weekly average temperature range. On the other hand, attenuation and amplification of coral seasonal amplitudes were recorded in deep, slow-growing corals, which were not related to environmental effects (temperature and/or seawater delta18O) or sampling resolution. We propose that these result from a combined effect of subannual variations in extension rate and variable rates of spine thickening of skeletal structures within the tissue layer. However, no smoothing or distortion of the isotopic signals was observed due to calcification within the tissue layer in shallow-water, fast-growing corals. The calculations from coral delta18O calibrations against the in situ measurements show that temperature (T) is related to coral delta18O (delta c) and seawater delta18O (delta w) by the equation T (°C) = -5.38 (delta c - delta w) -1.08. Our results demonstrate that coral delta18O from the northern Gulf of Aqaba is a reliable recorder of temperature variations, and that there is a minor contribution of seawater delta18O to this proxy, which could be ignored.
