Evaluation of Brisco Scour Monitors, HR-551, 1993

Two Brisco Scour Monitors were installed on pier MS1 of the Mississippi River at Burlington in August 1991. No problems were encountered during the installation. The monitors consist of a probe resting on the river bottom fastened to a cable that wraps around a reel. An electrical system monitors the movement of the reel which transmits to a digital readout which shows whether scour has occurred. The intent was to monitor the digital readout twice a year during a four-year evaluation period. The scour monitor digital readouts malfunctioned frequently due to electrical storms. The scour monitor performance was completely unacceptable.

Preservation of rhizobia by lyophilization with trehalose

The objective of this study was to determine if trehalose can effectively enhance the viability and storage lifetime of Rhizobium tropici and Rhizobium etli after lyophilization as compared to the traditional protective combination of sucrose and peptone. Two strains of bean-nodulating rhizobia were effectively preserved in the lyophilized state by 100 mM trehalose, and survived for at least 12 days, even when stored under non-ideal conditions. Trehalose provided better protection than the sucrose/peptone combination. When protective excipients were introduced inside the cells, strain CFN 42 was more sensitive to the type of additive used than strain CIAT 899, probably because CIAT 899 produces beta (1-2) glucan, which may have a protective effect. beta (1-2) glucan combined with sucrose protected better than trehalose against leakage from freeze-dried liposomes, but by itself it had no protective capability. There was a high level of unfrozen water associated with the hydrated glucan, in addition to a thermal event at approximately 70ºC, corresponding to an observed gel-sol transition in the glucan. These findings may shed light on the mechanism by which the glucan contributes to the protection of dried cells and liposomes, and may lead to further improvements in rhizobial inoculants.

L"educació davant la societat digital: presentació

Els articles reunits en aquest monogràfic, que és una iniciativa conjunta de la revista Temps d"Educació i de la revista en línia Interactive Educational Multimedia, reflexionen sobre les conseqüències educatives de la societat digital.1 És veritat que se n"ha escrit molt, i que és només el principi dels canvis que s"estan produint: comparats a vegades amb la impremta i altres vegades amb la pròpia escriptura, molts autors acostumen a situar la revolució digital per damunt de totes les altres revolucions tecnològiques. Al costat d"aquestes tecnofilies, en determinats moments completament acrítiques, la reflexió que qüestiona els canvis ha anat minvant progressivament davant l"avenç generalitzat de les telecomunicacions i de la informàtica, potser com a resultat d"un sentiment d"inevitabilitat. Afortunadament no és el cas dels articles reunits per a aquest monogràfic que incorpora diferents treballs d"un alt contingut.

Turistes mobiltzats : el turisme cultural a la societat digital mòbil

L’impacte de la societat en xarxa en el turisme està transformant els models de negoci pel canvi en el flux i en les dinàmiques d’accés a la informació. La irrupció dels mitjans socials i la revolució mòbil canvien la manera de planificar, experimentar i compartir el viatge. Si fa uns anys es parlava de la revolució d’Internet, avui podem dir que estem assistint a la Revolució Mòbil. No es tracta d’una evolució de la primera, sinó d’un fet que té les seves pròpies característiques, els seus protagonistes i la seva implicació en la indústria del turisme i la cultura. El gadget de referència en l’impuls de la Internet social està sent el mòbil, un sensor d’ubiqüitat i polièdric. L’accés a la informació, el consum de continguts i la compra de serveis ja no es limita a una actitud relaxada davant una pantalla, sinó que es produeix al llarg de tot el dia i en qualsevol lloc. Proceedings of the 2014 Iowa Tribal Summit on Cultural Preservation and Transportation, 2014

The 2014 Iowa Tribal Summit on Cultural Preservation and Transportation was a three day event held in Ames, Iowa, where Tribal officials, transportation officials, and preservation partners sat down to discuss various topics of interest related to consultation under the National Historical Preservation Act. The goal of this Summit was for these groups to discuss and develop effective project consultation. These proceeding provide a summary of the event, as well as recommendations for how to approach similar events in the future. In sum, 13 tribal officials, 16 transportation officials, 10 preservation partners, and two moderators attended all parts of the Summit. The 2014 Summit was a successful event when assessed in terms of group participation and attendee feedback. However, all attendees agree that events such as this Summit are most effective when they occur on a somewhat regular basis, where consulting parties can have regular dialog and interaction regarding all aspects of consultation under the National Historical Preservation Act. Digital forensic osteology--possibilities in cooperation with the Virtopsy project.

The present study was carried out to check whether classic osteometric parameters can be determined from the 3D reconstructions of MSCT (multislice computed tomography) scans acquired in the context of the Virtopsy project. To this end, four isolated and macerated skulls were examined by six examiners. First the skulls were conventionally (manually) measured using 32 internationally accepted linear measurements. Then the skulls were scanned by the use of MSCT with slice thicknesses of 1.25 mm and 0.63 mm, and the 33 measurements were virtually determined on the digital 3D reconstructions of the skulls. The results of the traditional and the digital measurements were compared for each examiner to figure out variations. Furthermore, several parameters were measured on the cranium and postcranium during an autopsy and compared to the values that had been measured on a 3D reconstruction from a previously acquired postmortem MSCT scan. The results indicate that equivalent osteometric values can be obtained from digital 3D reconstructions from MSCT scans using a slice thickness of 1.25 mm, and from conventional manual examinations. The measurements taken from a corpse during an autopsy could also be validated with the methods used for the digital 3D reconstructions in the context of the Virtopsy project. Future aims are the assessment and biostatistical evaluation in respect to sex, age and stature of all data sets stored in the Virtopsy project so far, as well as of future data sets. Furthermore, a definition of new parameters, only measurable with the aid of MSCT data would be conceivable.

El debat sobiranista català està a l‟ordre del dia i actualment no passa desapercebut en cap mitjà de comunicació ni tampoc en el món polític, econòmic i empresarial. El fet d‟estar tan viva una temàtica així de delicada està ocasionant controvèrsies dins l‟empresariat català o que té la seva empresa ubicada a Catalunya perquè tot plegat provoca moltes incerteses, que són el pitjor enemic dels empresaris i dels negocis. Tanmateix, però, les informacions publicades o emeses venen marcades per les opinions polítiques i periodístiques, que es troben censurades en certa mesura perquè segueixen una determinada línia política i/o editorial. Per això s‟ha elaborat un reportatge digital focalitzat en l‟empresariat català i l‟encaix Catalunya-Espanya que pretén aportar noves valoracions entorn a aquest debat donant veu a empresaris i professionals, entre altres. La part teòrica de la memòria defineix els conceptes bàsics que són de forçat coneixement per realitzar una part pràctica que ha de ser entesa per qualsevol persona i que s‟ha de tractar amb la major objectivitat possible. Per això, el web http://laquestiocatalana.cat aporta un llenguatge planer i les eines bàsiques per donar a conèixer una matèria molt criticada per alguns sectors. A través d‟entrevistes a personatges rellevants, el web introdueix nous punts de vista sobre una qüestió marcada, a simple vista, per la preocupació d‟un possible boicot per part d‟Espanya. Però aquesta no sembla ser la principal inquietud dels entesos, i és que hi ha altres aspectes encara més alarmants que poden influir en l‟empresariat i que no són tractats per cap mitjà de comunicació convencional.
