Experimental charge density distribution in 2, 5-dichloro-1, 4-benzoquinone has been carried out using high resolution X-ray diffraction data at 90 K to quantitatively evaluate the nature of C-Cl center dot center dot center dot O=C halogen bond in molecular crystals. Additionally, the halogen bond is studied from geometrical point of view and the same has been visualized using Hirshfeld surface analysis. The obtained results from experimental charge density analysis are compared with periodic quantum calculations using B3LYP 6-31G(d,p) level of theory. The topological values at bond critical point, three-dimensional static deformation density features and electrostatic potential isosurfaces unequivocally establish the attractive nature of C-Cl center dot center dot center dot O=C halogen bond in crystalline lattice.

Eight new dimeric lipids, in which the two Me2N+ ion headgroups are separated by a variable number of polymethylene units [-(CH2)(m)-], have been synthesized. The electron micrograph (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) of their aqueous dispersions confirmed the formation of vesicular-type aggregates. The vesicle sizes and morphologies were found to depend strongly on the m value, the method, and thermal history of the vesicle preparation. Information on the thermotropic properties of the resulting vesicles was obtained from microcalorimetry and temperature-dependent fluorescence anisotropy measurements. Interestingly, the T-m values for these vesicles revealed a nonlinear dependence on spacer chain length (m value). These vesicles were able to entrap riboflavin. The rates of permeation of the OH- ion under an imposed transmembrane pH gradient were also found to depend significantly on the m value. X-Ray diffraction of the cast films of the lipid dispersions elucidated the nature and the thickness of these membrane organizations, and it was revealed that these lipids organize in three different ways depending on the m value. The EPR spin-probe method with the doxylstearic acids 5NS, 12NS, and 16NS, spin-labeled at various positions of stearic acid, was used to establish, the chain-flexibility gradient and homogeneity of these bilayer assemblies. The apparent fusogenic propensities of these bipolar tetraether lipids were investigated in the presence of Na2SO4 with fluorescence-resonance energy-transfer fusion assay. Small unilamellar vesicles formed from 1 and three representative biscationic lipids were also studied with fluorescence anisotropy and H-1 NMR spectroscopic techniques in the absence and the presence of varying amounts of cholesterol.

Chlorine-35 NQR frequency and spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as a function of temperature in the range 77-300 K were carried out on 2-amino-3,5-dichloropyridine. Two NQR signals were observed and were assigned to the two chlorines present in the molecule using the additive model for substituent effects. The temperature dependence of the NQR frequency was analysed in terms of the torsional oscillations of the molecule and the torsional frequencies and their temperature dependence were calculated numerically using a two-mode approximation. The temperature dependence of the NQR spin-lattice relaxation time was found to be mainly due to the torsional oscillations of the molecule, with anharmonicity effects showing up at higher temperatures. We discuss a recently formulated microscopic theory of the unusual coexistence of spin density waves (SDWs) and charge density waves (CDWs) that has been seen in recent experiments on (TMTTF)2Br, (TMTSF)2PF6 and α-(BEDT-TTF)2MHg(SCN)4.

Recent experiments indicate that the spin-density waves (SDWs) in (TMTTF)(2)Br, (TMTSF)(2)PF6, and alpha-(BEDT-TTF)(2)MHg(SCN)(4) are highly unconventional and coexist with charge-density waves (CDWs). We present a microscopic theory of this unusual CDW-SDW coexistence. A complete understanding requires the explicit inclusion of strong Coulomb interactions, lattice discreteness, the anisotropic two-dimensional nature of the lattice, and the correct hand filling within the starting Hamiltonian. We have carried out symmetrized density-matrix renormalization-group calculations to study the nature of excited states of long polyacene oligomers within a Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian. We have used the C-2 symmetry, the electron-hole symmetry, and the spin parity of the system in our calculations. We find that there is a crossover in the lowest dipole forbidden two-photon state and the lowest dipole allowed excited state with size of the oligomer. In the long system limit, the two-photon state lies below the lowest dipole allowed excited state. The triplet state lies well below the two-photon state and energetically does not correspond to its description as being made up of two triplets. These results are in agreement with the general trends in linear conjugated polymers. However, unlike in linear polyenes wherein the two-photon state is a localized excitation, we find that in polyacenes, the two-photon excitation is spread out over the system. We have doped the systems with a hole and an electron and have calculated the charge excitation gap. Using the charge gap and the optical gap, we estimate the binding energy of the 1(1)B(-) exciton to be 2.09 eV. We have also studied doubly doped polyacenes and find that the bipolaron in these systems, to be composed of two separated polarons, as indicated by the calculated charge-density profile and charge-charge correlation function. We have studied bond orders in various states in order to get an idea of the excited state geometry of the system. We find that the ground state, the triplet state, the dipole allowed state, and the polaron excitations correspond to lengthening of the rung bonds in the interior of the oligomer while the two-photon excitation corresponds to the rung bond lengths having two maxima in the system.

Vapour adsorption refrigeration systems (VAdS) have the advantage of scalability over a wide range of capacities ranging from a few watts to several kilowatts. In the first instance, the design of a system requires the characteristics of the adsorbate-adsorbent pair. Invariably, the void volume in the adsorbent reduces the throughput of the thermal compressor in a manner similar to the clearance volume in a reciprocating compressor. This paper presents a study of the activated carbon +HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) system as a possible pair for a typical refrigeration application. The aim of this study is to unfold the nexus between the adsorption parameters, achievable packing densities of charcoal and throughput of a thermal compressor. It is shown that for a thermal compressor, the adsorbent should not only have a high surface area, but should also be able to provide a high packing density. Given the adsorption characteristics of an adsorbent-adsorbate pair and the operating conditions, this paper discloses a method for the calculation of the minimum packing density necessary for an effective throughput of a thermal compressor. We have studied the power spectral density [S(f) = gamma/f(alpha)] of universal conductance fluctuations (UCF's) in heavily doped single crystals of Si, when the scatterers themselves act as the primary source of dephasing. We observed that the scatterers, with internal dynamics like two-level-systems, produce a significant, temperature-dependent reduction in the spectral slope alpha when T less than or similar to 10 K, as compared to the bare 1/f (alphaapproximate to1) spectrum at higher temperatures. It is further shown that an upper cutoff frequency (f(m)) in the UCF spectrum is necessary in order to restrict the magnitude of conductance fluctuations, [(deltaG(phi))(2)], per phase coherent region (L-phi(3)) to [(deltaGphi)(2)](1/2) less than or similar to e(2)/h. We find that f(m) approximate to tau(D)(-1), where tau(D) = L-2/D, is the time scale of the diffusive motion of the electron along the active length (L) of the sample (D is the electron diffusivity).

Electrochemical redox reactions of ferrous/ferric (Fe2+/Fe3+) and hydroquinone/quinone (H(2)Q/Q) were studied on Pt and polyaniline (PANI)-deposited Pt electrodes in 0.5 M H2SO4-supporting electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance spectroscopy. A comparison of the experimental data obtained with the Pt and PANI/Pt electrodes suggested that the reactions were catalyzed by the PANI. Based on a relative increase in peak currents of cyclic voltammograms, catalytic efficiency (gamma(cv)) of the PANI was defined. There was an increase in gamma(cv) with an increase of scan rate and a decrease of concentration of Fe2+/Fe3+ or H(2)Q. The complex plane impedance spectrum of the electrode consisted of a semicircle in high frequency range and a linear spike in low frequency range. The exchange current density (i(0)) calculated using the semicircle part of the impedance showed Butler-Volmer kinetics with respect to concentration dependence. From a relative increase of i(0) on the PANI/Pt electrode, catalytic efficiency (gamma(eis)) was evaluated. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Lead-lanthanum-titanate (Pb0.72La0.28)TiO3 (PLT) is one of the interesting materials for DRAM applications due to its room temperature paraelectric nature and its higher dielectric permittivity. PLT thin films of different thickness ranging from 0.54- 0.9 mum were deposited on Pt coated Si substrates by excimer laser ablation technique. We have measured the voltage (field) dependence, the thickness dependence, temperature dependence of dc leakage currents and analysis is done on these PLT thin films. Current- voltage characteristics were measured at different temperatures for different thick films and the thickness dependence of leakage current has been explained by considering space charge limited conduction mechanism. The charge transport phenomena were studied in detail for films of different thicknesses for dynamic random access memory applications.

Temperature dependence of the intra-molecular vibrational modes Of C-60 in the quasi-1D polymeric RbC60, across the low temperature transition at similar to50 K, has been probed through infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopies. With the lowering of temperature, the split IR modes of RbC60 are seen to harden but below 50 K a small but definitive signature of an anomalous softening is observed. In addition, the background IR transmission shows an increase below 50 K with the opening of a well defined gap in the electronic spectrum. The implications of these results, along with those of Raman measurements, are discussed in terms of the interaction of intra-molecular phonons with electrons and spin excitations in the system. he thickness dependence of the electrical properties in the thin films of uniaxial SrBi2Nb2O9 has been studied in this report. According to many published literatures, it could be an effective way to identify the basic conduction process. The laser ablation was chosen as the deposition technique to ensure an oriented growth and a proper stoichiometric deposition. The structural, dielectric and conduction properties were studied as a function of thickness. The films showed good ferroelectric properties, an ordered growth, and a space-charge controlled conduction process, which was double checked by reversing the polarity of the applied voltage, and also by examining the high field current response of the sample varying in thickness.

La-graded heterostructure films were prepared by sol-gel technique on platinum substrates and electrical properties of these films were compared with those of conventional thin films of similar compositions. X-ray diffraction results indicate the pure perovskite polycrystalline structure of these films. Atomic Force Microscopy analysis revealed a finer grain size and relatively lower surface roughness. Relatively higher values of Pm and Pr (69 and 38 ?C cm?2, respectively) and excellent dielectric properties with lower loss (K=1900, tan ?=0.035 at 100 kHz) were observed for La-graded heterostructure films. Also lower leakage current density (not, vert, similar2.5 nA cm?2) and a higher onset field (not, vert, similar50 kV cm?1) of space charge conduction indicated higher breakdown strength and good leakage current characteristics. The ac electric field dependence of the permittivity at sub-switching fields was analyzed in the framework of the Rayleigh dynamics of domain walls. The estimated irreversible domain wall displacement contribution to the total dielectric permittivity was 17 and 9% for conventional 15 at.% La doped PbTiO3 and La-graded heterostructure films, respectively. The improved dielectric and polarization behavior of La-graded heterostructure films may be attributed to homogenous dopant distribution compared to the conventional 15 at.% La doped PbTiO3 films.

We study the nature of excited states of long polyacene oligomers within a Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) Hamiltonian using the Symmetrized Density Matrix Renormalization Group (SDMRG) technique. We find a crossover between the two-photon state and the lowest dipole allowed excited state as the system size is increased from tetracene to pentacene. The spin-gap is the smallest gap. We also study the equilibrium geome tries in the ground and excited states from bond orders and bond-bond correlation functions. We find that the Peierls instability in the ground state of polyacene is conditional both from energetics and structure factors computed froth correlation functions.

Recent observations have shown that most of the warps in the disk galaxies are asymmetric. However there exists no generic mechanism to generate these asymmetries in warps. We have shown that a rich variety of possible asymmetries in the z-distribution of the spiral galaxies can naturally arise due to a dynamical wave interference between the first two bending modes i.e. bowl-shaped mode(m=0) and S-shaped warping mode(m = 1) in the galactic disk embedded in a dark matter halo. We show that the asymmetric warps are more pronounced when the dark matter content within the optical disk is lower as in early-type galaxies.
