In this doctoral thesis, a power conversion unit for a 10 kWsolid oxide fuel cell is modeled, and a suitable control system is designed. The need for research was identified based on an observation that there was no information available about the characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell from the perspective of power electronics and the control system, and suitable control methods had not previously been studied in the literature. In addition, because of the digital implementation of the control system, the inherent characteristics of the digital system had to be taken into account in the characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell as well the methods for the modeling and control of the DC/DC converter and the grid converter are studied by a literature survey. Based on the survey, the characteristics of the SOFC as an electrical power source are identified, and a solution to the interfacing of the SOFC in distributed generation is proposed. A mathematical model of the power conversion unit is provided, and the control design for the DC/DC converter and the grid converter is made based on the proposed interfacing solution. The limit cycling phenomenon is identified as a source of low-frequency current ripple, which is found to be insignificant when connected to a grid-tied converter. A method to mitigate a second harmonic originating from the grid interface is proposed, and practical considerations of the operation with the solid oxide fuel cell plant are presented. At the theoretical level, the thesis discusses and summarizes the methods to successfully derive a model for a DC/DC converter, a grid converter, and a power conversion unit. The results of this doctoral thesis can also be used in other applications, and the models and methods can be adopted to similar applications such as photovoltaic systems. When comparing the results with the objectives of the doctoral thesis, we may conclude that the objectives set for the work are met. In this doctoral thesis, theoretical and practical guidelines are presented for the successful control design to connect a SOFC-based distributed generation plant to the utility grid.

Transportation of fluids is one of the most common and energy intensive processes in the industrial and HVAC sectors. Pumping systems are frequently subject to engineering malpractice when dimensioned, which can lead to poor operational efficiency. Moreover, pump monitoring requires dedicated measuring equipment, which imply costly investments. Inefficient pump operation and improper maintenance can increase energy costs substantially and even lead to pump failure. A centrifugal pump is commonly driven by an induction motor. Driving the induction motor with a frequency converter can diminish energy consumption in pump drives and provide better control of a process. In addition, induction machine signals can also be estimated by modern frequency converters, dispensing with the use of sensors. If the estimates are accurate enough, a pump can be modelled and integrated into the frequency converter control scheme. This can open the possibility of joint motor and pump monitoring and diagnostics, thereby allowing the detection of reliability-reducing operating states that can lead to additional maintenance costs. The goal of this work is to study the accuracy of rotational speed, torque and shaft power estimates calculated by a frequency converter. Laboratory tests were performed in order to observe estimate behaviour in both steady-state and transient operation. An induction machine driven by a vector-controlled frequency converter, coupled with another induction machine acting as load was used in the tests. The estimated quantities were obtained through the frequency converterâs Trend Recorder software. A high-precision, HBM T12 torque-speed transducer was used to measure the actual values of the aforementioned variables. The effect of the flux optimization energy saving feature on the estimate quality was also studied. A processing function was developed in MATLAB for comparison of the obtained data. The obtained results confirm the suitability of this particular converter to provide accurate enough estimates for pumping applications.

Permanent magnet generators (PMG) represent the cutting edge technology in modern wind mills. The efficiency remains high (over 90%) at partial loads. To improve the machine efficiency even further, every aspect of machine losses has to be analyzed. Additional losses are often given as a certain percentage without providing any detailed information about the actual calculation process; meanwhile, there are many design-dependent losses that have an effect on the total amount of additional losses and that have to be taken into consideration. Additional losses are most often eddy current losses in different parts of the machine. These losses are usually difficult to calculate in the design process. In this doctoral thesis, some additional losses are identified and modeled. Further, suggestions on how to minimize the losses are given. Iron losses can differ significantly between the measured no-load values and the loss values under load. In addition, with embedded magnet rotors, the quadrature-axis armature reaction adds losses to the stator iron by manipulating the harmonic content of the flux. It was, therefore, re-evaluated that in salient pole machines, to minimize the losses and the loss difference between the no-load and load operation, the flux density has to be kept below 1.5 T in the stator yoke, which is the traditional guideline for machine designers. Eddy current losses may occur in the end-winding area and in the support structure of the machine, that is, in the finger plate and the clamping ring. With construction steel, these losses account for 0.08% of the input power of the machine. These losses can be reduced almost to zero by using nonmagnetic stainless steel. In addition, the machine housing may be subjected to eddy current losses if the flux density exceeds 1.5 T in the stator yoke. Winding losses can rise rapidly when high frequencies and 10â15 mm high conductors are used. In general, minimizing the winding losses is simple. For example, it can be done by dividing the conductor into transposed subconductors. However, this comes with the expense of an increase in the DC resistance. In the doctoral thesis, a new method is presented to minimize the winding losses by applying a litz wire with noninsulated strands. The construction is the same as in a normal litz wire but the insulation between the subconductors has been left out. The idea is that the connection is kept weak to prevent harmful eddy currents from flowing. Moreover, the analytical solution for calculating the AC resistance factor of the litz-wire is supplemented by including an end-winding resistance in the analytical solution. A simple measurement device is developed to measure the AC resistance in the windings. In the case of a litz-wire with originally noninsulated strands, vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) is used to insulate the subconductors. In one of the two cases studied, the VPI affected the AC resistance factor, but in the other case, it did not have any effect. However, more research is needed to determine the effect of the VPI on litz-wire with noninsulated strands. An empirical model is developed to calculate the AC resistance factor of a single-layer formwound winding. The model includes the end-winding length and the number of strands and turns. The end winding includes the circulating current (eddy currents that are traveling through the whole winding between parallel strands) and the main current. The end-winding length also affects the total AC resistance factor.

The objective of this work was to optimize the parameter setup for GTAW of aluminum using an AC rectangular wave output and continuous feeding. A series of welds was carried-out in an industrial joint, with variation of the negative and positive current amplitude, the negative and positive duration time, the travel speed and the feeding speed. Another series was carried out to investigate the isolate effect of the negative duration time and travel speed. Bead geometry aspects were assessed, such as reinforcement, penetration, incomplete fusion and joint wall bridging. The results showed that currents at both polarities are remarkably more significant than the respective duration times. It was also shown that there is a straight relationship between welding speed and feeding speed and this relationship must be followed for obtaining sound beads. A very short positive duration time is enough for arc stability achievement and when the negative duration time is longer than 5 ms its effect on geometry appears. The possibility of optimizing the parameter selection, despite the high inter-correlation amongst them, was demonstrate through a computer program. An approach to reduce the number of variables in this process is also presented.

No ano agríco la de 1978/79 instalou-se um ensaio na área experimental da Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", USP, em Piracicaba, SP, tendo por objetivo estudar os efeitos de reguladores vegetais, em diferentes doses e épocas de aplicação, sobre a cultura do algodoeiro (Gossypium hirsutum L. ). Os tratamentos utilizados foram: cloreto de mepiquat (DPC) nas concentrações de 84, 167 e 250ppm, cloreto de clorocolina (CCC) nas dosagens de 250, 380 e 450ppm e ethephon (CEPA) nas concentrações 1670, 3340 e 6880ppm, sendo cada substância aplicada 51, 65 e 143 dias após a germinação, respectivamente. CCC e DPC tornaram mais compacta a arquitetura das plantas de algodoeiro, assim como promoveram reduções nos parâmetros da análise de crescimento. O número de ramos produtivos e de maçãs não foi afetado por esses reguladores. Foram notadas algumas variações nos parâmetros de produtividade, sendo que CCC, DPC e CEPA tenderam a aumentar o peso médio de algodão por planta . Esses produtos não depreciaram os caracteres agronômicos do algodão, nem as características tecnológicas.

Kasvava tarve siirtää tehoa myÃs verkkoon päin on lisännyt aktiivisen verkkosillan käyttÃä. Kaksitasoisen aktiivisen verkkosillan vaikutuksesta DC-välipiirin keskipisteen ja kolmivaiheisen kuorman tähtipisteen välinen jännite on nollasta poikkeava aiheuttaen suurentuneen yhteismuotoisen jännitteen taajuusmuuttajan lähtÃÃn ja verkon puolelle. Lisäksi yhteismuotoisten jännitteiden aiheuttamat kytkentätaajuiset häiriÃvirrat voivat aiheuttaa vikavirtasuojien tahatonta laukeamista, vaikeuttaa EMC-standardien vaatimusten täyttämistä, lisätä moottorin käämieristyksien rasitusta ja mahdollisuutta moottorin laakerivaurioille. DiplomityÃssä tutkitaan aktiivisen ja passiivisen verkkosillan tuottamaa yhteismuotoista jännitettä simuloinneilla. Esitellään aikaisempaa tutkimustietoa yhteismuotoisen jännitteen ja virran vaimennusratkaisuista aktiivista verkkosiltaa käytettäessä. Tutkimustiedon pohjalta suunnitellaan koelaitteistolle soveltuva suodin. Suotimen toiminta testataan simuloinnein sekä kokeellisin mittauksin. Tehdyt mittaukset osoittavat, että suunniteltu suodin vaimentaa yhteismuotoista jännitettä noin 20 dB verkkosillan kytkentätaajuudella ja tämän jälkeen yli 20 dB/dekadi taajuuteen 100 kHz asti. Lisäksi yhteismuotoisen virran suuruus syÃttÃkaapelin kautta pieneni ehdotetun suotimen vaikutuksesta.

This doctoral thesis introduces an improved control principle for active du/dt output filtering in variable-speed AC drives, together with performance comparisons with previous filtering methods. The effects of power semiconductor nonlinearities on the output filtering performance are investigated. The nonlinearities include the timing deviation and the voltage pulse waveform distortion in the variable-speed AC drive output bridge. Active du/dt output filtering (ADUDT) is a method to mitigate motor overvoltages in variable-speed AC drives with long motor cables. It is a quite recent addition to the du/dt reduction methods available. This thesis improves on the existing control method for the filter, and concentrates on the lowvoltage (below 1 kV AC) two-level voltage-source inverter implementation of the method. The ADUDT uses narrow voltage pulses having a duration in the order of a microsecond from an IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) inverter to control the output voltage of a tuned LC filter circuit. The filter output voltage has thus increased slope transition times at the rising and falling edges, with an opportunity of no overshoot. The effect of the longer slope transition times is a reduction in the du/dt of the voltage fed to the motor cable. Lower du/dt values result in a reduction in the overvoltage effects on the motor terminals. Compared with traditional output filtering methods to accomplish this task, the active du/dt filtering provides lower inductance values and a smaller physical size of the filter itself. The filter circuit weight can also be reduced. However, the power semiconductor nonlinearities skew the filter control pulse pattern, resulting in control deviation. This deviation introduces unwanted overshoot and resonance in the filter. The controlmethod proposed in this thesis is able to directly compensate for the dead time-induced zero-current clamping (ZCC) effect in the pulse pattern. It gives more flexibility to the pattern structure, which could help in the timing deviation compensation design. Previous studies have shown that when a motor load current flows in the filter circuit and the inverter, the phase leg blanking times distort the voltage pulse sequence fed to the filter input. These blanking times are caused by excessively large dead time values between the IGBT control pulses. Moreover, the various switching timing distortions, present in realworld electronics when operating with a microsecond timescale, bring additional skew to the control. Left uncompensated, this results in distortion of the filter input voltage and a filter self-induced overvoltage in the form of an overshoot. This overshoot adds to the voltage appearing at the motor terminals, thus increasing the transient voltage amplitude at the motor. This doctoral thesis investigates the magnitude of such timing deviation effects. If the motor load current is left uncompensated in the control, the filter output voltage can overshoot up to double the input voltage amplitude. IGBT nonlinearities were observed to cause a smaller overshoot, in the order of 30%. This thesis introduces an improved ADUDT control method that is able to compensate for phase leg blanking times, giving flexibility to the pulse pattern structure and dead times. The control method is still sensitive to timing deviations, and their effect is investigated. A simple approach of using a fixed delay compensation value was tried in the test setup measurements. The ADUDT method with the new control algorithm was found to work in an actual motor drive application. Judging by the simulation results, with the delay compensation, the method should ultimately enable an output voltage performance and a du/dt reduction that are free from residual overshoot effects. The proposed control algorithm is not strictly required for successful ADUDT operation: It is possible to precalculate the pulse patterns by iteration and then for instance store them into a look-up table inside the control electronics. Rather, the newly developed control method is a mathematical tool for solving the ADUDT control pulses. It does not contain the timing deviation compensation (from the logic-level command to the phase leg output voltage), and as such is not able to remove the timing deviation effects that cause error and overshoot in the filter. When the timing deviation compensation has to be tuned-in in the control pattern, the precalculated iteration method could prove simpler and equally good (or even better) compared with the mathematical solution with a separate timing compensation module. One of the key findings in this thesis is the conclusion that the correctness of the pulse pattern structure, in the sense of ZCC and predicted pulse timings, cannot be separated from the timing deviations. The usefulness of the correctly calculated pattern is reduced by the voltage edge timing errors. The doctoral thesis provides an introductory background chapter on variable-speed AC drives and the problem of motor overvoltages and takes a look at traditional solutions for overvoltage mitigation. Previous results related to the active du/dt filtering are discussed. The basic operation principle and design of the filter have been studied previously. The effect of load current in the filter and the basic idea of compensation have been presented in the past. However, there was no direct way of including the dead time in the control (except for solving the pulse pattern manually by iteration), and the magnitude of nonlinearity effects had not been investigated. The enhanced control principle with the dead time handling capability and a case study of the test setup timing deviations are the main contributions of this doctoral thesis. The simulation and experimental setup results show that the proposed control method can be used in an actual drive. Loss measurements and a comparison of active du/dt output filtering with traditional output filtering methods are also presented in the work. Two different ADUDT filter designs are included, with ferrite core and air core inductors. Other filters included in the tests were a passive du/dtfilter and a passive sine filter. The loss measurements incorporated a silicon carbide diode-equipped IGBT module, and the results show lower losses with these new device technologies. The new control principle was measured in a 43 A load current motor drive system and was able to bring the filter output peak voltage from 980 V (the previous control principle) down to 680 V in a 540 V average DC link voltage variable-speed drive. A 200 m motor cable was used, and the filter losses for the active du/dt methods were 111Wâ126 W versus 184 W for the passive du/dt. In terms of inverter and filter losses, the active du/dt filtering method had a 1.82-fold increase in losses compared with an all-passive traditional du/dt output filter. The filter mass with the active du/dt method was 17% (2.4 kg, air-core inductors) compared with 14 kg of the passive du/dt method filter. Silicon carbide freewheeling diodes were found to reduce the inverter losses in the active du/dt filtering by 18% compared with the same IGBT module with silicon diodes. For a 200 m cable length, the average peak voltage at the motor terminals was 1050 V with no filter, 960 V for the all-passive du/dt filter, and 700 V for the active du/dt filtering applying the new control principle.

ABSTRACT The seed (nutlet) morphology of four Onobrychis Miller (Fabaceae: subfamily Papilionoideae, Section Hymenobrychis DC.) taxa from Turkey, including three endemic taxa, was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Onobrychis tournefortii, O. galegifolia, O. cappadocica, O. albiflora. The seed examined exhibited variation in size, shape, colour, and surface sculpturing. Seed size ranged between 4.0-5.2 mm length and 2.0-3.6 mm width. Observed shapes included; ellipticus anguste asymmtricus reniformis, Ovatus anguste asymmetricus reniformis and ellipticus reniformis. Seed surface sculpturing revealed two distinct types: reticulate and rugulate. Species of Onobrychisare generally similar and confused with those of Hedysarumduring the identification process. Seed surface micromorphology can suggest taxonomical diagnostic characters for distinguishing species. Many of these characteristics are diagnostic at both the generic and specific levels.

(O gênero Siphanthera Pohl ex DC. (Melastomataceae) no estado de Minas Gerais). O gênero Siphanthera está representado no Brasil por treze espécies, que ocorrem nos campos rupestres e nas áreas de campo úmido associadas aos cerrados. Em Minas Gerais ocorrem seis espécies: S. arenaria (DC.) Cogn., S. cordata Pohl ex DC., S. dawsonii Wurdack, S. foliosa (Naudin) Wurdack, S. gracillima (Naudin) Wurdack e S. paludosa (DC.) Cogn. A elaboração do presente trabalho foi baseada no estudo de exsicatas depositadas em vários herbários e em observações de campo. à acrescentado um novo registro para Minas Gerais, S. dawsonii, e duas novas citações na literatura, S. gracillima e S. foliosa. São apresentadas chave para as espécies, descrições, ilustrações, distribuição geográfica e discussão de seus problemas taxonômicos.

Através do estudo do florescimento e da frutificação de quatro populações de Eupatorium vauthierianum, na região de Paranapiacaba, observou-se uma defasagem de florescimento de cerca de 20 dias entre as populações mais precoces e as mais tardias. Para as mais precoces, os capítulos estavam com flores em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento em maio e a plena frutificação ocorreu em meados de junho. Decorreram cerca de 55 dias da fase de botão floral até a de fruto maduro. O número de frutos (aquênios) por capítulo variou de 10 a 26 e a porcentagem de aquênios férteis por capítulo variou de 5,5 a 100%. Através do estudo da germinação observou-se variação na capacidade germinativa, tanto dentro como entre as populações estudadas. A temperatura de 20°C mostrou-se mais eficiente na promoção da germinação que 25°C e 30°C, o mesmo ocorrendo com o fotoperíodo de 12 horas quando comparado ao tratamento de escuro.

Nesta espécie ocorrem dois tipos de tricomas secretores: glândula perolada e tricoma saculiforme. Ambos originam-se na protoderme do primórdio foliar e atingem sua maturidade nas folhas jovens presentes no ápice caulinar. A densidade dos dois tipos de tricomas diminui durante a expansão do limbo, sendo raros na folha adulta. As glândulas peroladas são constituídas por uma célula basal e por uma célula apical grande cuja forma varia de semi-globóide a espatulada. A liberação da secreção ocorre após a ruptura da cutícula distendida. Os tricomas saculiformes são constituídos por uma célula basal, 1-2 células colares e uma célula apical cônica, de posição inclinada à superfície foliar. A secreção acumula-se em espaços subcuticulares diminutos, não tendo sido observada ruptura da cutícula.

T. absinthioides, Inuleae, Compositae, is a weedy species that is spreading in the irrigation area of the Colorado River, Argentina. This species can be found in normal and saline soils. Morphological and anatomical variables were measured with two salts, sodium chloride and sodium sulfate, with three levels of osmotic potential -0.4, -0.8 and -1.5 MPa, in hydroponic culture, using Hoagland solution as the cultivation media. The total diameter of the roots of plants growing in Na2SO4 and NaCl increased when the osmotic potential was -0.4 MPa. In plants growing in NaCl this may have resulted from the increase in the size of the cortical cells and in plants growing in Na2SO4, the diameter increased may be due to an increase in the cambial activity. The number and length of shoot internodes decreased with increasing salinity, even though this was not statistically significant. In comparison to the control, the total diameter of the shoot increased at -0.4 MPa and decreased with the reduction of the osmotic potential. In comparison to the control, the length of the leaves decreased at -0.4 MPa and the leaves width increased at the same concentration. The palisade parenchyma appeared less developed in saline conditions. In comparison to the control, the number of hairs increased at -0.4 MPa. T. absinthioides acts as a semihalophytic species, according to the salt ranks it tolerates. The mechanisms of adaptation to saline conditions are succulence in root and stunted growth if the salt in the media is NaCl, and the production of haloxeromorphic characters if the salt in the media is Na2 SO4
