The first part of this paper provides a comprehensive and self-contained account of the interrelationships between algebraic properties of varieties and properties of their free algebras and equational consequence relations. In particular, proofs are given of known equivalences between the amalgamation property and the Robinson property, the congruence extension property and the extension property, and the flat amalgamation property and the deductive interpolation property, as well as various dependencies between these properties. These relationships are then exploited in the second part of the paper in order to provide new proofs of amalgamation and deductive interpolation for the varieties of lattice-ordered abelian groups and MV-algebras, and to determine important subvarieties of residuated lattices where these properties hold or fail. In particular, a full description is given of all subvarieties of commutative GMV-algebras possessing the amalgamation property.

Infective endocarditis due to vancomycin-resistant (VR) Enterococcus faecalis has only rarely been reported. We report a case of VR E. faecalis endocarditis that failed to respond to linezolid therapy, outline the virulence traits of the isolate, and review previously published cases of VR E. faecalis endocarditis.

We provide data on organic carbon and opal fluxes and d13C obtained with a sediment trap deployed in the Ierapetra Basin (eastern Mediterranean Sea), from June 2010 to May 2013. Data was obtained within the framework of the REDECO (Regional Drivers of Ecosystem Change and its Influence on Deep-Sea Populations in the Mediterranean) project.

N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) activation has been implicated in forms of synaptic plasticity involving long-term changes in neuronal structure, function, or protein expression. Transcriptional alterations have been correlated with NMDAR-mediated synaptic plasticity, but the problem of rapidly targeting new proteins to particular synapses is unsolved. One potential solution is synapse-specific protein translation, which is suggested by dendritic localization of numerous transcripts and subsynaptic polyribosomes. We report here a mechanism by which NMDAR activation at synapses may control this protein synthetic machinery. In intact tadpole tecta, NMDAR activation leads to phosphorylation of a subset of proteins, one of which we now identify as the eukaryotic translation elongation factor 2 (eEF2). Phosphorylation of eEF2 halts protein synthesis and may prepare cells to translate a new set of mRNAs. We show that NMDAR activation-induced eEF2 phosphorylation is widespread in tadpole tecta. In contrast, in adult tecta, where synaptic plasticity is reduced, this phosphorylation is restricted to short dendritic regions that process binocular information. Biochemical and anatomical evidence shows that this NMDAR activation-induced eEF2 phosphorylation is localized to subsynaptic sites. Moreover, eEF2 phosphorylation is induced by visual stimulation, and NMDAR blockade before stimulation eliminates this effect. Thus, NMDAR activation, which is known to mediate synaptic changes in the developing frog, could produce local postsynaptic alterations in protein synthesis by inducing eEF2 phosphorylation.

The reaction of various 1-pivaloyl-1H-tetrazoles with excess lithium and a catalytic amount of naphthalene (20 mol%) led, after treatment with methanol, to the corresponding free tetrazoles through reductive C–N bond cleavage. This methodology represents a reasonable alternative to other nonreductive protocols.

This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Carte de l'Algérie, Tell, Kabylie et Sahara Algérien, dressée ... d'après les renseignements oficiels et sous la direction de ... Mr. Daumas, par C. Delaroche ; gravée par Charpentier. It was published by Longuet; Ministère de la Guerre in 1856. Scale 1:800,000. Covers northern part of Algeria and portions of Tunisia and Morocco. Map in French. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the Europe Lambert Conformal Conic coordinate system. All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as drainage, cities and other human settlements, roads and routes, administrative and territorial boundaries, shoreline features, forests, telegraph poles, and more. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps from the Harvard Map Collection. These maps typically portray both natural and manmade features. The selection represents a range of originators, ground condition dates, scales, and map purposes.
