The effects of bath composition and electroplating conditions on structure, morphology, and composition of amorphous Fe-Cr-P-Co deposits on AISI 1020 steel substrate, priorly plated with a thin Cu deposit, were investigated. The increase of charge density activates the inclusion of Cr in the deposit. However, above specific values of the charge density, which depend on the deposition current density, the Cr content in the deposit decreases. This Cr content decreasing is probably due to the significant hydrogen evolution with the increasing of deposition cur-rent and charge density. The effect of charge density on the content of Fe and Co is not clear. However, there is a tendency of increasing of Fe content and decreasing of Co content with the raising of current density. The Co is more easily deposited than the P, and its presence results in a more intense inhibition effect on the Cr deposition than the inhibition effect caused by P presence. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that Co increasing in the Fe-Cr-P-Co alloys analyzed does not promote the susceptibility to microcracks, which led to a good quality deposit. The passive film of the Fe-Cr-P-Co alloy shows a high ability formation and high protective capacity, and the results obtained by current density of corrosion, j(cor), show that the deposit with addition of Co, Fe31Cr11P28Co30, presents a higher corrosion resistance than the deposit with addition of Ni, Fe54Cr21P20Ni5. A study was undertaken to evaluate Saccharonzyces cerevisiae as a substrate for the biosorption of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) aiming to the selective determination of these species in aqueous solutions. The yeast cells were covalently immobilised on controlled pore glass (CPG), packed in a minicolumn and incorporated in an on-line flow injection system. The effect of chemical and physical variables affecting the biosorption process was tested in order to select the optimal analytical conditions for the Cr retention by S. cerevisiae. Cr(III) was retained by the immobilised cells and Cr(VI) were retained by CPG. The speciation was possible by selective and sequential elution of Cr(III) with 0.05 mol L-1 HCl and 2.0 mol L-1 HNO3 for Cr(VI). The influence of some concomitant ions up to 20 mg L-1 was also tested. Quantitative determinations of Cr were carried out by means of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). Preconcentration factors of 12 were achieved for Cr(III) and 5 for Cr(VI) when 1.7 mL of sample were processed reaching detection limits of 0.45 for Cr(III) and 1.5 mu g L-1 for Cr(VI). The speciation of inorganic Cr in different kinds of natural waters was performed following the proposed method. Spiked water samples were also analysed and the recoveries were in all cases between 81 and 103%. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We examined the effects of simulated folivory by caterpillars on photosynthetic parameters and nitrogen (N) resorption efficiency in Quercus pyrenaica saplings. We analyzed the differences between intact leaves in control plants, punched leaves in damaged plants, and intact leaves in damaged plants. We then established two levels of simulated folivory: low (approximate to 13% of the leaf area of one main branch removed per plant) and high (approximate to 26% of the leaf area of one main branch removed per plant) treatments. No differences were found in net assimilation rate and conductance between either leaf type or treatment during the most favourable period for photosynthesis. However, the N content was lower in punched than in intact leaves, and as a result PNUE was higher in damaged leaves from treated trees. In leaf-litter samples, N mass was significantly higher in punched than in intact leaves in treated plants, and LMA was significantly higher in damaged than in intact leaves of both the treated and control plants. Consequently, N resorption efficiency was around 15% lower in damaged leaves as compared with intact leaves from treated and control plants. Mechanical injury to leaves not only triggered no compensatory photosynthetic response to compensate a lower carbon uptake due to leaf area loss, but also affected the resorption process that characterizes leaf senescence.

Different kinds of modifiers and coatings on the integrated platform of transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) have been tested for the simultaneous determination of two group of elements: the first, the more volatile, formed by arsenic, bismuth, lead, antimony and selenium; the second, the less volatile, formed by cobalt, chromium, cupper, iron and manganese in milk by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. Different Rh-modifiers were studied, such as Rh-coated platforms (Rh), carbide plus rhodium coated platforms (W-Rh, Zr-Rh), carbide-coated platforms (W and Zr) with co-injection of RhCl3, solutions and uncoated platforms with injection of solutions of Pd(NO3)(2), Mg(NO3)(2), and RhCl3. Milk samples were diluted 1:10 in 1.0% HNO3 and injected into the tube. The mass of modifier deposited and co-injected in the tube and the use of end capped tubes were also evaluated in order to improve the electrothermal behavior of analytes. Integrated platform pretreated with W plus co-injection RhCl3 for first group and pretreated with W-Rh for second group were elected. For 20 mu L injected samples the analytical curves in the 5.0-20.0 mu g L-1 concentration range have good linear correlation coefficients (r > 0.998). Relative standard deviations (n = 12) are < 6% and the calculated characteristic masses are between 5 pg and 62 pg.

Carboxymethylcellulose packed in to a glass column was used to pre-concentrate metallic cations from aqueous solutions. The pre-concentrated metal cations are directly eluted from the column using 5.0 mL of 1.0 mol L -1 hydrochloric acid. The optimum pre-concentration conditions are given (glass column, 16 cm length, 0.80 cm i.d., stationary phase height of 12 cm, flow-rate, 1.5 mL min -1). The recuperation efficiency achieved is greater than 95%, while the enrichment factor is 10 for 50 mL of solution (0.50 mg L -1 each).

Results are presented on the mechanism of passivation of Co-Cr-Mo biological implant alloys in physiological serum using open circuit potentiometry, potentiodynamic curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The potential dependence of impedance data and the analysis of the parameters obtained indicate a progressive diminution of the initial layer thickness and the simultaneous formation of a second higher resistive layer. In more severe conditions than the existent in human body, the metallographic examination of the alloy surface shows localized corrosion in interdendritric regions. Elemental analysis of the surface reveals the presence of higher chromium content in these regions. The presence of chlorine was not detected, which suggested that during preferential attack, soluble species are also formed.

Thermal spray coatings as Cr3C2-NiCr obtained by high velocity oxy-fuel spraying (HVOF) are mainly applied due to their behaviour against aggressive erosive-abrasive and corrosive atmospheres and their thermal stability at high temperatures [1]. In order to increase the corrosion protection that it offers to the substrate trying to close the interconnected pores, it is possible to apply a thermal treatment with the gun during the spraying of the coating. This treatment could be applied in different ways. One of these ways consists of spraying only a few layers of coating followed by thermal treatment and finally the spray of the rest of layers. This thermal treatment on spraying is studied related to the corrosion properties of the system. The study comprises the electrochemical characterisation of the system by open circuit potential (OC), polarisation resistance (Rp), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and impedance spectroscopy measurements (EIS). Optical and scanning electron microscopy characterisation (OM and SEM) of the top and cross-section of the system has been used in order to justify the electrochemical results.

The effect of bath composition and electroplating conditions on structure, morphology and composition of amorphous Fe-Cr-P-Ni-C deposits on Cu substrate was investigated. The deposition efficiency of Fe-Ni-P-C alloy increased significantly with the addition of formic acid, but decreased with the addition of Cr to the plating bath. The increase of charge density activates the inclusion of Cr in the deposit. However, above a specific value of charge density, which depends on deposition current density, the Cr content in the deposit decreases. SEM analysis showed that the increase of Ni, Cr or charge deposition promotes susceptibility to microcracking.

SnO2 ceramics doped with different amounts of Co, Cr or Nb were investigated using visible and infrared spectroscopy at room temperature. Based on the observed d-d transitions the valence states of incorporated dopants were determined. Values of the optical band-gap were calculated in all samples. The infrared spectra of the samples displayed variations in the position, relative intensity and width of the bands, which were attributed to the presence of dopants.

A method is described for the simultaneous determination of Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb in mineral water samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) and a longitudinal Zeeman-effect background correction system. The electrothermal behavior of analytes during pyrolysis and atomization steps was studied without modifier, in presence of 5 μg Pd and 3 μg Mg(NO3)2 and in presence of 50 μg NH4H2PO4 and 3 μg Mg(NO3)2. A volume of 20 μL of a 0.028 mol L -1 HNO3 solution containing 50 μg L-1 Ni and Pb, 10 μg L-1 Cr and 5 μg L-1 Cd was dispensed into the graphite tube at 20°C. The mixture palladium/magnesium was selected as the optimum modifier. The pyrolysis and atomization temperatures were fixed at 1000°C and 2300°C, respectively. The characteristic masses were calculated as 2.2 pg Cd, 10 pg Cr, 42 pg Ni and 66 pg Pb and the lifetime of the graphite tube was around 600 firings. Limits of detection based on integrated absorbance were 0.02 μg L-1Cd, 0.94 μg L-1 Cr, 0.45 μg L-1 Ni and 0.75 μg L-1 Pb, which exceeded the requirements of Brazilian Food Regulation that establish the maximum permissible level for Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb at 3 μg L-1, 50 μg L-1, 20 μg L-1 and 10 μg L-1, respectively. The recoveries of Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb added to mineral water samples varied within the 93-108%, 96-104%, 87-101% and 98-108% ranges, respectively. Results of analysis of standard reference materials (National Institute of Standards and Technology: 1640-Trace Elements in Natural Water; 1643d-Trace Elements in Water) were in agreement with certified values at the 95% confidence level.
