It has been the main concern of CEHUM, as a Research Centre within the Humanities which operates in an inter and transdisciplinary structure to listen attentively to the “noise of the world” and attempt a global interpretation of the signs of the times issuing from the world around us, as vibrant echoes of many social and cultural pressing issues. Every year each new Colóquio de Outono attempts to give evidence of that concern through the topic chosen for debate, ample enough and challenging enough to trigger a lively multidisciplinary dialogue amongst the diff erent research groups that compose this centre, the participants and our invited guest speakers. Throughout the three days of this 16th Colóquio de Outono we had the privilege to debate the propositions of a vast number of national and international specialists in the manifold fi elds of inquiry here represented, engaging keynote speakers, project advisors, members of research teams and external researchers attached to the various research projects currently running in CEHUM, in the fi elds of literature, linguistics, philosophy, ethics, visual arts, cultural studies, music and performance. Each specifi c fi eld of studies was however never seen isolated, but always embodied in a geo-cultural context and within the scope of a wide variety of critical debates and current theories of knowledge, as a signal of our understanding of the Humanities as a rich and plural territory which engages us all, scholars, researchers, students.

Experiência global no fechamento percutâneo do canal arterial

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a experiência global da nossa instituição com o fechamento percutâneo do canal arterial. MÉTODOS: Desde dezembro/92, 150 pacientes foram submetidos a 178 procedimentos (85 - técnica de Rashkind; 87 - coils de Gianturco; 6 - coils Duct Occlud). A mediana de idade foi de 6,5 anos (1 a 57). A média do diâmetro mínimo do canal foi de 3,05±1,24mm (1 a 8). Avaliações clínicas e ecocardiográficas foram realizadas seriadamente. RESULTADOS: Implantes adequados ocorreram em 143 (95,3%) pacientes. A prevalência de shunt residual imediato foi de 52,1%, decrescendo para 15,9% no seguimento. Esta taxa caiu para 5,2% após a realização de procedimentos adicionais. Embolização de coils ocorreu em 12 procedimentos e de umbrella em 1. Um paciente apresentou hemólise e outro estenose discreta da artéria pulmonar esquerda. Não houve mortalidade. CONCLUSÃO: Esta modalidade terapêutica é segura e eficaz, proporcionando bons resultados a longo prazo.

Comportamento da freqüência cardíaca e da sua variabilidade durante as diferentes fases do exercício físico progressivo máximo

OBJETIVO: A variabilidade da freqüência cardíaca (VFC) tem sido estudada em repouso, como meio não-invasivo para avaliação da regulação autonômica cardíaca, sendo que sua diminuição está relacionada a maior risco cardiovascular. Entretanto, durante o exercício, quando ocorrem importantes alterações neurais, seu comportamento deve ser melhor documentado. Estudamos o comportamento da freqüência cardíaca (FC) e da sua variabilidade durante as diferentes fases metabólicas do exercício físico progressivo máximo, em jovens. MÉTODOS: Dezessete homens (28±6 anos) realizaram teste ergoespirométrico máximo em cicloergômetro (30W/3min), determinando-se a FC e a VFC (desvio-padrão) através da onda eletrocardiográfica, amplificada e gravada batimento a batimento em computador, numa freqüência da 125Hz (AT/Codas). RESULTADO: A FC aumentou concomitantemente ao aumento da intensidade do exercício. A VFC diminuiu progressivamente, atingindo níveis significantes em relação ao repouso a partir de 60% do consumo de oxigênio do pico do exercício, a partir de 45-60% da potência máxima e a partir da intensidade do limiar anaeróbio, estabilizando-se nos períodos subseqüentes. CONCLUSÃO: Nossos resultados sugerem que a VFC medida pelo desvio-padrão da FC diminui em fases do exercício nas quais o aumento da FC é determinado, principalmente, por retirada vagal.

The effect of hydrodynamic conditions in Corynebacterium glutamicum growth

In these conditions, the carbon metabolism is modified, namely the flux shifts from the pentose phosphate pathway to glycolysis and the TCA cycle flux decreases and consequently bacterial growth is strongly affected [1,2]. Percutaneous closure of atrial septal defects. The role of transesophageal echocardiography

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the role of transesophageal echocardiography in percutaneous closure of atrial septal defects (ASD) with the Amplatzer septal occluder. METHODS: Patients were selected for percutaneous closure of ASD by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), which was also used to monitor the procedure, helping to select the appropriate size of the Amplatzer device, to verify its position, and to access the immediate results of the procedure. During the follow-up, TEE was used to evaluate the presence and magnitude of residual shunt (RS), device position, and right cardiac chamber diameters. RESULTS: Twenty-two (40%) of a total of 55 studied patients were selected. Thirteen underwent Amplatzer device implantation, eight are still waiting for it, and one preferred the conventional surgical treatment. All procedures were successful, which was mainly due to proper patient selection. Six (23%) patients acutely developed RS, which spontaneously disapeared at the three-month follow-up examination in three patients. There was a significant reduction in the right ventricle diastolic diameter, from 27mm (average) to 24mm and 20mm, one and three months after the procedure, respectively (p<0.0076). CONCLUSION: With the aid of TEE, percutaneous closure of ASD can be successfully, safely, and effectively performed.

Gender in focus: (new) trends in media

At the same time, postfeminism (McRobbie, 2004) gains importance and demonstrates the intricacies of a neoliberal, highly individualist culture that subtly imprisons the freedoms that it is supposed to grant (Gill & Scharff, 2011).

Gender and media: where do we stand today?

Nowadays, the public discourses about gender equality are commonly accepted in Western society. In fact, we live in an era of “equality illusion” (Banyard, 2010) because the mainstream discourses incorporate gender in the agenda, conveying the message that feminist struggles are unnecessary today. At the same time, postfeminism (McRobbie, 2004) gains importance and demonstrates the intricacies of a neoliberal, highly individualist culture that subtly imprisons the freedoms that it is supposed to grant (Gill & Scharff, 2011). However, back in 1978, Gaye Tuchman used the expression “symbolic annihilation” to refer to how the media represented women. The author refers to a “symbolic annihilation” because sometimes it is so hidden and subtle that it becomes difficult to perceive – and to be fought. Much has improved since then; yet a lot remains the same. Over the past decades there have been marked changes in gender relations, in feminist activism, in the (media) communication industry and in society in general (Byerly, 2013; Carter, Steiner & McLaughlin, 2015; Gallagher, 2014; Gallego, 2013; Krijnen, Álvares & Van Bauwel, 2011; Krijnen & Van Bauwel, 2015; Lobo, Silveirinha, Subtil, & Torres, 2015; Ross, 2009; Silveirinha, 2001; Van Zoonen, 1994, 2010). Now, in a globalised and media saturated world, the gendered picture is, consequently, different. The contemporary grammar is marked by diverse and complex tensions (van Zoonen, 2010).

Gender, sex and sexuality in two open access communication journals published in Portugal: a critical overview of current discursive practices

The links between gender, sex and sexuality and their relevance are theoretically and politically problematic (Richardson, 2007). One of the difficulties in understanding their interconnections is that these terms are often used differently and ambiguously by different authors (and even by the same authors). This article reports the results of an analysis of the articles published in open access communication journals with known impact factor, edited in Portugal and published between 2005 and 2012. The diverse conceptualisations of those three basic concepts and of their (inter)relationships within communication research are identified. The complexity and the intricate (and often implicit) nature of both the meanings of these categories and their relationships underlie and justify our attention and further research. What the findings suggest about the current communication research into gender issues published in the two journals surveyed is that the ‘Gender differences discourse’ (Sunderland, 2004) is the most pervasive discourse (also) in academic practice. Additionally, they show that gender and sex are mainly taken for a fact, not a question that is worth being studied. The editors of these journals, as well as the scholars submitting manuscripts, need to be more aware of the traditional nature of the theoretical and methodological choices that they make regarding gender- and sex-related issues, as well as of the relative lack of attention to sexuality as a research subject.
