The Brazilian Northeast has been a constant subject for journalists of one of the world's leading media companies - The New York Times - between 1933 and 1945. This time, the US government implemented a new foreign policy for Latin America - known as the Good Neighbor Policy. It preached, various points including more respect and attention to the countries south of U.S. borders. Because of her geostrategic importance, Brazil was one of the countries that received the most attention of the bureaucracy and American press. This study investigates the multiple Northeast representations formulated in The New York Times' pages when the Americans were spotlight is on the region. It delineates similarities and differences between the NYT, the press and the governments of the United States and Brazil from the ways of conceiving this particular part of Brazil. Through the analysis of texts, photographs and maps, it is dedicated to establish connections between spaces, press and politics of the 1930s and 1940s. These decades there were relevant changes in the political landscape of both countries that permeated the news, reports and articles of NYT. Circumstances such as the 1935 armed uprisings - known as Communist Conspiracy - the installation and operation of the New State, and especially the Brazilian and US participation in World War II and the bilateral negotiations on the installation of US bases in Brazil were cardinal for the various Northeast images that circulated in the publication. The region was repeatedly subject of correspondent of the New York newspaper in Brazil, Frank M. Garcia, but also present on matters of professionals responsible for various sections: review of books, publishing, tourism, foreign affairs, etc. Along the investigated period, the visions of the region made in the articles published in the newspaper that suffered major metamorphoses. Starting with Northeast of the drought, famine and death recurrent in Brazilian literature to the most dangerous point for hemispheric defense, passing through representations of the American West lawless nineteenth century and the Latin America marked by the dominance of exotic nature and stagnation, a space to be transformed by the US technical knowledge.

This research investigated the female performance in Pernambuco theater during the Brazilian military dictator ship in the 1970s, analyzing the works of four actresses of theater groups Hermilo Borba Filho, Experiential and Expression, who acted in the period. Launches a look at the female body in the theater from a body scenic transgression: the conscience of a body insubordination in response to a given context. However, before delineated an overview of the artistic and socio - cultural position of women in the theater, in the periods prior to the dictatorship in Brazil and Pernambuco, covering theatrical and historical references, in order to reflect on how these settings interfered in the picture Social actr ess under the dictatorship. The groups are revisited by the looks of interpreters, which was perceived that female targeted search relationships, and in this context, relations with other theater groups of the time, with other artists of the groups that we re inserted with the dictatorial context with censorship, with the offender engaged and theater, with the body. In parallel, it develops a reflection on the scenic body that opposed the dictatorship, a body that violates the established norms, the Transgre ssor Body. The research also discusses an analogy between the work of the actresses who opposed the military regime and militant women. Starting from analyzes with interviews with the actresses from the methodologies of Oral History and Discourse Analysis, the study is developed by building up connections between the testimonies of the artists and the philosophical assumptions of Henri Bergson, on the body and memory. It is also designed to reflect on the changes of the female body in the theater in history , also in line with the philosophical concept of Becoming Woman Felix Guattari. It was found, therefore, that the actresses from the nineteenth century, were a group of female social actors who changed the position of women in history; the stigmatization o f the actress by profession, considered indecent in previous centuries, left traces in some areas today and the idea of the liberation of the female body propagated by feminism in the 1970s, was configured at the time as the best way to protest and will influence, in some contexts, the representation of women in their theatrical make.

The commercial complex Guarapes was during the second half of the nineteenth century most commercial street of Rio Grande do Norte province. In that time frame, you can see its flourishing as one of the central places of trade in the province in 1850, and its subsequent abandonment in 1900. This thesis aims to investigate, in its first part, the paths that help to understand, as the context of the expansion of global markets in the second half of the nineteenth century enabled the conditions for the emergence of the commercial complex. However, trade relations established in this province through the commercial complex, even participating in this global environment, reserved particular characteristics in their social and trade relations, as if dealing with a peripheral province, we look at the uniqueness of the relationship occurred in this space. In the second part, we seek to understand the importance that the rivers Potengi and Jundia had to install the commercial complex Guarapes in the second half of the nineteenth century. As the geographical position in relation to rivers, enabled this space became flow zone and confluence of goods distributed to the various parts of the interior of the province. We also monitor the process that made these rivers leave the role of mobility and transport relations in this space, giving way the railways and roads shooting. In the third part, we seek to understand the commercial complex Guarapes in focus. Analyzing their spatial distribution on the landscape, and how the spatial organization held at the same time traces of the Brazilian patriarchy exposed by Gilberto Freyre, but also "modern" features, due to the increase of a new culture inserted material in the province. We also seek to understand elements of material culture that was the environment of the complex, and how these materials are important sources for understanding this society under study. We treat from the biggest to the smallest fragments without hierarchize them. Understanding that, the study associated the written sources and materials provide a gain in understanding of everyday these people who lived in that area of the complex in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Through the nineteenth century, it was constant in the discourse of the local norte-rio-grandenses (Natal city, Brazil) administrators, the appeal for subsidy to the central government for the works of the port of Natal upgrade. The port in the capital, the main route of the Rio Grande do Norte communication, because of the limitations attached to it, as the dunes surrounding the city spreading sand in the riverbed, and several reefs located along the coast, did not allow the entry in his berth larger ships. These difficulties brought major problems the province, who could not hold the flow of production coming from the inside, resulting in the north of Rio Grande political scene, questioning the centrality of Christmas position in the province. Only Republican scheme had been approved credit by the federal government for the improvement works of the port. The port became the Republican political discourse Potiguar one of the main promises to bring "progress" the Potiguar land, being placed as a central issue of which depend on the "future" of the state. The objective of this study is to analyse the emergence of a new port concept in speeches and interventions of the local ruling groups in the early twentieth century. We analyse the emergence of a modern notion of port, marked by the organizing effort, rationalization and regulation of port activities by the state, and the new relationship assumed by the harbour front to the city resulting from this new perception. The port has become for local leaders to groups of capital "waiting room", requiring change of the composition of urban space for integrating the port to the city. The Port of Natal became endowed with a pedagogical function, incorporating the urban fabric, codes, values and practices considered by local managers as modern and civilized. This new city space, considered a "waiting room", caused conflicts between the local ruling groups and influential figures in the Potiguar political field, which sought to encourage with the process of organizing the harbour front undesirable regarded figures in the city views as an impediment to the image of progress and modernity that the dominant groups intended to expose the port.

This work aims to analyze the short stories Prelude, At the Bay and The Dolls House, by Katherine Mansfield under the prism of the gender studies (mainly on the works of Joan Scott and Elisabeth Badinter). To reach such objective, and based on the feminist criticism works (especially those of Elaine Showalter and Toril Moi), we analyzed the three stories, which are from the writers so-called family phase. The present work contains a bibliographical contextualization of Mansfields modernist work under three main aspects: modernism, the short story and womens writing/writings on women. From the analysis of the three short stories, we observed that questions of gender, representation and identity were depicted by means of the preponderance of female characters from all ages, marital statuses and classes. At the end it was possible to verify how Mansfield works contributed to a reflection about places and roles occupied by women in turn of the XIX and XX Centuries, whereas how this author was also in search for her own identity as a woman and as a writer, exactly in a context when women writers and womens writings started to become more visible face to a predominantly masculine literary canon.

En este trabajo se reflexiona sobre la necesidad de un marco epistemolgico inclusivo que aborde la multivocalidad de los procesos histricos objeto de estudio y permita crear relatos histricos ms plurales y representativos. Pero el relato sobre el pasado ser mejor si, adems de ser inclusivo a nivel epistemolgico, tambin contribuye de alguna manera a mejorar la sociedad actual. Por ello se reclama una arqueologa que incluya una preocupacin axiolgica y busque posibles mbitos de aplicacin para los resultados de sus investigaciones. Ejemplificamos esta reivindicacin con un caso de estudio sobre cermica, que subraya que los objetos cotidianos fueron y son utilizados en las estrategias de construccin social de la desigualdad. En este contexto se reclama la toma de consciencia de esta prctica en la actualidad y la renuncia a determinados recursos discursivos. Por ejemplo, se propone retomar el concepto inclusivo, este vez para oponerlo a la significacin social del adjetivo exclusivo. Aunque todas estas reflexiones derivan de casos de estudio de arqueologa histrica, pueden ser tiles a la arqueologa en general, sin sesgo cronolgico alguno.

Originalmente tese de doutorado da autora, defendida na Universidade de So Paulo, a obra discorre acerca do papel dos peridicos recreativos, cientficos e literrios na sociedade brasileira do século Xix e incio do século XX. Demonstrando amplo domnio bibliogrfico a respeito das discusses mais recentes sobre o assunto, a autora preenche uma lacuna sobre a revista francesa, que logo caiu no gosto das elites brasileiras a partir do Segundo Reinado.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo contribuir com a historiografia literria sul-rio-grandense e seu sistema literrio, atravs do resgate da obra impressa por Francisco Xavier Ferreira em sua tipografia e dos registros literrios da primeira metade do século XIX publicados no jornal O Noticiador. Ao coletar e analisar esses dados, pode-se divulgar melhor os autores, poemas e outros textos pouco conhecidos da regio sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Tambm possvel certificar a veracidade dos dados biogrficos referentes aos autores que publicaram nesse peridico. Reunir os dados esparsos sobre Francisco Xavier Ferreira e seus contemporneos permite igualmente conhecer melhor a história da imprensa no Rio Grande do Sul, j que esse fundou a primeira tipografia e o primeiro jornal da cidade de Rio Grande. Alm dos impressos de 1831 e 1834, o contedo literrio existente no jornal O Noticiador, publicado de 1831 a 1836, a fonte primordial para o para entender a insero da literatura no contexto intelectual da poca. Desta forma, busca-se entender a literatura produzida na dcada de 1830, bem como resgatar o contexto literrio da poca em que foi produzida.

This article involves the analysis of a case-study, so I have chosen Equador by the Portuguese author Miguel Sousa Tavares. His book recreates the story of Sao Tome and Principe's people living under strict circumstances, while belonging to the Portuguese empire as one of its overseas' province. The forthcoming lines contain an approach to interculturality by analyzing these concrete circumstances. These lines also describe and study the differences between cultures - the Portuguese, as a European culture, and the Equatorial, as a colonized people's culture. The theme is old, but always relevant: the clash of value systems and the impossibility of forcibly overlaying one society on another. Slavery has existed as a common practice in most civilizations throughout history, based upon the superiority of a human being towards another. In socially hierarchized communities slavery was a major principle, almost a need. That way, some would benefit from exuberating privileges but many others only from hard working and giving their freedom up to be mistreated instead. In order to have a socially structured community, they were to be seriously and consciously neglected.

Uma transcrio musical consiste numa composio adaptada de uma obra original para outra instrumentao, que no a inicialmente definida pelo compositor. Nestas, o contedo original tende a permanecer o mais fiel possvel (De Vente, 2005). A partir do século XIX esta prtica tornou-se corrente e prolfica. Atualmente, o uso de transcries bastante comum, especialmente quando destinado a instrumentos musicais com uma história recente devido sua falta de repertrio cannico. Um instrumento caracterstico deste ltimo grupo o saxofone para o qual se tem transcrito uma grande quantidade de obras com especial nfase nos perodos barroco e romntico. Nesta monografia detalho uma abordagem metodolgica transcrio musical que visa expandir o repertrio para saxofone para alm dos perodos barroco e romntico, assim como instrumentaes e desafios diversos no processo de adaptao tais como: adaptar obras polifnicas para um instrumento monofnico, transcrever gestos tcnicos e especficos de um instrumento de corda e criar continuidades sonoras tpicas do uso do pedal no piano no saxofone. O processo de transcrio descrito nesta monografia impe uma metamorfose timbrica s obras originais e oferece ao ouvinte uma perspectiva diferente sobre o contedo musical assim como questiona conceitos de autenticidade e autoria. Quatro composies que seguem a atual proposta de transcrio so apresentadas e documentadas. De ressaltar a diversidade de escolhas do repertrio transcrito em termos de estilo, e instrumentao que se traduzem num grande desafio na adaptao ao saxofone, entre estas: Dream, John Cage, Chaccone em Sol menor, Tomaso Vitali, Fratres, Arvo Prt e o Inverno das Quatro Estaes, Antonio Vivaldi.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo investigar se o uso de mdias digitais pode ou no contribuir para a progresso das ideias histricas dos jovens em idade de escolarizao. A pesquisa tem seus pressupostos tericos e metodolgicos pautados na Educao Histrica, linha de pesquisa do Ensino de História que se preocupa com a busca de respostas concernentes ao desenvolvimento do pensamento histrico e a formao da conscincia histrica de crianas e jovens. A dissertao composta de trs captulos, o primeiro intitulado O Ensino de História em sua historicidade aborda a História do Ensino de História no Brasil desde seu surgimento no século XIX,at a primeira dcada do século XXI, e o modo como est estruturado enquanto disciplina escolar no ensino bsico brasileiro, o surgimento e incorporao das mdias digitais no cotidiano dos sujeitos e a consequente produo de novos sentidos, e tambm a forma como a Educao Histrica se prope enquanto campo terico e metodolgico para a aprendizagem de História intermediada por essas recentes tecnologias. No segundo captulo denominado Ideias tcitas dos jovens a respeito do modo de vida e origem dos primeiros homens e mulheres foi investigado as ideias iniciais das duas turmas de 6 ano do ensino fundamental analisadas nesta pesquisa, com base na ideia substantiva, a origem e modo de vida dos primeiros homens e mulheres, o sentido que os jovens atribuem s experincias humanas ocorridas ao longo do tempo, bem como, a aplicao da Unidade Temtica Investigativa a partir dos conhecimentos prvios dos educandos. O terceiro captulo intitulado A construo do conhecimento histrico intermediado pelas mdias digitais, trata da anlise dos dados da pesquisa de modo a investigara progresso das ideias histricas dos jovens, com base na comparao de suas narrativas iniciais e finais, elaboradas ao longo da aplicao da pesquisa.

El artculo intenta discutir la formacin de la identidad mdica a partir del anlisis del proceso de descalificacin oficial de los curanderos y de los esfuerzos por diferenciar el conocimiento mdico de la llamada charlatanera en Ro de Janeiro de la primera mitad del siglo XIX. En este sentido, se trata de sealar la diferencia entre el perodo en que las actividades de los curanderos eran legitimadas por la Fisicatura-mor (rgano del gobierno responsable por la normatividad de las prcticas de cura) a partir de la concesin de licencias a los mismos y luego para el momento en que los mdicos organizados en instituciones y articulados polticamente comienzan el proceso de descalificacin de los curanderos populares y tambin en la apropiacin de sus conocimientos. El artculo analiza las licencias y peticiones as como discursos de polticos del perodo para demostrar la bsqueda de la hegemona social del conocimiento mdico, principalmente por la asociacin del conocimiento de las plantas dominadas por los curanderos populares y la legitimidad de la poblacin hacia ellos.
