We compare the trace element and Sr isotopic compositions of stoneware bodies made in Yaozhou and Jizhou to characterise these Chinese archaeological ceramics and examine the potential of Sr isotopes in provenance studies. Element concentrations determined by ICP-MS achieve distinct characterisation for Jizhou samples due to their restricted variation, yet had limited success with Yaozhou wares because of their large variability. In contrast, Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios in Yaozhou samples have a very small variation and are all significantly lower than those of Jizhou samples, which show a large variation and cannot be well characterised with Sr isotopes. Geochemical interpretation reveals that Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios will have greater potential to characterise ceramics made of low Rb/Sr materials such as kaolin clay, yet will show larger variations in ceramics made of high Rb/Sr materials such as porcelain stone. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fracture load and marginal accuracy of crowns made from a shrinkage-free ZrSiO4 ceramic cemented with glass-ionomer or composite cement after chewing simulation. Thirty-two human mandibular molars were randomly divided into two groups. All teeth were prepared for and restored with shrinkage-free ZrSiO4 ceramic crowns (Everest HPC (R), KaVo). The crowns of group A (N = 16) were luted to the teeth using KetacCem (R) and group B (N = 16) were adhesively cemented using Panavia (R) 21EX. Measurements of the marginal accuracy before and after cementation were made using replicas and an image analysis system. All specimens were exposed to 1.2 million cycles of thermo-mechanical fatigue in a chewing simulator. Surviving specimens were subsequently loaded until fracture in a static testing device. Fracture loads (N) were recorded. All specimens survived chewing simulation. The mean fracture loads (+/- s.d.) were Group A, 1622 N (+/- 433); group B, 1957 N (+/- 806). There was no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). The marginal gap values before cementation were (mean +/- s.d.): Group A, 32.7 mu m (+/- 6.8); group B, 33.0 mu m (+/- 6.7).The mean marginal gap values after cementation were (+/- s.d.): Group A, 44.6 mu m (+/- 6.7); group B, 46.6 mu m (+/- 7.7). The marginal openings were significantly higher after cementation for both groups (P < 0.05). All test groups demonstrated fracture load and marginal accuracy values within the range of clinical acceptability.

Setf-supported asymmetric hollow-fiber membranes of mixed oxygen-ionic and electronic conducting perovskite Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCF) were prepared by a combined phase-inversion and sintering technique. The starting inorganic powder was synthesized by combined EDTA-citrate complexing process followed by thermal treatment at 600 degrees C. The powder was dispersed in a polymer solution and then extruded into hollow-fiber precursors through a spinneret. ne fiber precursors were sintered at elevated temperatures to form gastight membranes, which were characterized by SEM and gas permeation tests. Performance of the hollow fibers in air separation was both experimentally and theoretically studied at various conditions. The results reveal that the oxygen permeation process was controlled by the slow oxygen surface exchange kinetics under the investigated conditions. The porous inner surface of the prepared perovskite hollow-fiber membranes considerably favored the oxygen permeation. The maximum oxygen flux measured was 0.031 mol-m(-2).s(-1) at 950 degrees C with the sweep gas flow rate of 0.522 mol(.)m(-2).s(-1). To improve the oxygen flux of BSCF perovskite membranes, future work should be focused on surface modification rather than reduction of the membrane thickness. The development of ideas and theories concerning the structure of glazes, as one of the glassy materials, are reviewed in the general introduction. The raw materials and the manufacturing process for glazes are described (Chapter One). A number of new vanadyl(IV) dipyridylamine and tripyrldylamine complexes have been prepared, various spectroscopic techniques are used in the investigation of the vanadyl ion in a weak ligand field, the situation of those found in a glaze environment (Chapter Three). In glaze recipes containing silica, potash feldspar, china clay, MO(M= Ca, Sr, Sa, Ti and Zn) and NiO, the ligand field theory is used in the elucidation of the effect of M (in MO) on the absorption spectra and coordination behaviour of Ni(II) in glazes. The magnetic and visible spectral results are reviewed in terms of Dietzel's idea of field strength of M and also in terms of Shteinberg's theory of glaze structure. X-ray diffraction is used for the identification of various species that formed after the firing process of glazes (Chapter Four). In Chapter Five, [] Mossbauer spectroscopy, supplemented by E.S.R., X-ray and visible spectral measurements are used in the investigation of iron in a glaze composition similar to that used in Chapter Four. The Mossbauer results are used in following the influence of; M in MO (M= Sr, Ca and Ba), oxides of titanium(IV) and vanadium(V ), and firing conditions on the chemistry of iron. Generally the iron(II) and iron(III) in the fired glazes are in octahedral sites although there are a range of similar, though not identical environments. A quite noticable influence of M (in MO) on the resonance line width is seen. In one case evidence is found for iron(IV) in an iron/vanadium glaze. E.S.R. of vanadium containing glazes indicate that vanadium is present as V02+ in a highly distorted tetragonal environment .

The thesis deals with a research programme in which the cutting performance of a new generation of ceramic cutting tool material is evaluated using the turning process. In part one, the performance of commercial Kyon 2000 sialon ceramic inserts is studied when machining a hardened alloy steel under a wide range of cutting conditions. The aim is to formulate a pattern of machining behaviour in which tool wear is related to a theoretical interpretation of the temperatures and stresses generated by the chip-tool interaction. The work involves a correlation of wear measurement and metallographic examination of the wear area with the measurable cutting data. Four main tool failure modes are recognised: (a) flank and crater wear (b) grooving wear (c) deformation wear and (d) brittle failure Results indicate catastrophic edge breakdown under certain conditions. Accordingly in part two, the edge geometry is modified to give a double rake tool; a negative/positive combination. The results are reported for a range of workpiece materials under orthogonal cutting conditions. Significant improvements in the cutting performance are achieved. The improvements are explained by a study of process parameters; cutting forces, chip thickness ratio, chip contact length, temperature distribution, stress distribution and chip formation. In part three, improvements in tool performance are shown to arise when the edge chamfer on a single rake tool is modified. Under optimum edge chamfer conditions a substantial increase in tool life is obtained compared with the commercial cutting geometry.

Throughout the nineteenth century, German classical music production was an aesthetic point of reference for British concert audiences. As a consequence, a sizeable number of German musicians were to be found in Britain as performers, conductors, teachers, musicologists and managers. They acted as agents of intercultural transfer, disseminating performance and organisational practices which had a transformative effect on British musical life. This article moves away from a focus on high-profile visiting artists such as Mendelssohn Bartholdy or Wagner and argues that the extent to which transfer took place can be better assessed by concentrating on the cohort of those artists who remained permanently. Some of these are all but forgotten today, but were household names in Victorian Britain. The case studies have been selected for the range of genres they represent and include Joseph Mainzer (choral singing), Carl Rosa (opera), August Manns, Carl Hallé and Julius Seligmann (orchestral music), and Friedrich Niecks (musicology). On a theoretical level, the concept of ‘intercultural transfer’ is applied in order to determine aspects such as diffusion, adaptation or sustainability of artistic elements within the new cultural context. The approach confirms that ‘national’ cultures do not develop indigenously but always through cross-national interaction.

Synthetic calcium phosphates, despite their bioactivity, are brittle. Calcium phosphate-mullite composites have been suggested as potential dental and bone replacement materials which exhibit increased toughness. Aluminium, present in mullite, has however been linked to bone demineralisation and neurotoxicity: it is therefore important to characterise the materials fully in order to understand their in vivo behaviour. The present work reports the compositional mapping of the interfacial region of a calcium phosphate-20 wt% mullite biocomposite/soft tissue interface, obtained from the samples implanted into the long bones of healthy rabbits according to standard protocols (ISO-10993) for up to 12 weeks. X-ray micro-fluorescence was used to map simultaneously the distribution of Al, P, Si and Ca across the ceramic-soft tissue interface. A well defined and sharp interface region was present between the ceramic and the surrounding soft tissue for each time period examined. The concentration of Al in the surrounding tissue was found to fall by two orders of magnitude, to the background level, within similar to 35 mu m of the implanted ceramic.

For the Chinese, fine art is one of the most important items in human life. The goals of fine arts education enhance the student so that s/he can make reasonable judgments about work, gain knowledge of color and understand the process of designing environmental layouts. Related technique and creativity training are offered students in accordance with individual differences and social expectations.^ Traditionally, Taiwan's junior high school fine art program teaches mainly painting technique. The Ministry of Education in Taiwan determines the curriculum of junior high school fine art education. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of teaching Chinese painting appreciation on the artistic achievements of junior high school students in Taiwan. The subjects were seventh grade students who had never learned Chinese painting before. Two classes were randomly chosen from each target school and were designated as the experimental or control group. Instruction in all groups was delivered by the researcher himself. At the end of the study, data about subjects' related knowledge, creative technique, and feeling toward Chinese painting were systematically collected and analyzed.^ The result of the study was that students in the experimental group were more motivated to learn Chinese painting than were the students in the control group. Students in the experimental group made better progress in the development of creative skill, had better critical ability, and demonstrated better performance in Chinese painting form, set up, stroke and color of related knowledge than did students in the control group. It was therefore concluded that Chinese painting appreciation education can promote better artistic achievement and that this approach should be used in other areas of art education. ^

Hazardous radioactive liquid waste is the legacy of more than 50 years of plutonium production associated with the United States' nuclear weapons program. It is estimated that more than 245,000 tons of nitrate wastes are stored at facilities such as the single-shell tanks (SST) at the Hanford Site in the state of Washington, and the Melton Valley storage tanks at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee. In order to develop an innovative, new technology for the destruction and immobilization of nitrate-based radioactive liquid waste, the United State Department of Energy (DOE) initiated the research project which resulted in the technology known as the Nitrate to Ammonia and Ceramic (NAC) process. However, inasmuch as the nitrate anion is highly mobile and difficult to immobilize, especially in relatively porous cement-based grout which has been used to date as a method for the immobilization of liquid waste, it presents a major obstacle to environmental clean-up initiatives. Thus, in an effort to contribute to the existing body of knowledge and enhance the efficacy of the NAC process, this research involved the experimental measurement of the rheological and heat transfer behaviors of the NAC product slurry and the determination of the optimal operating parameters for the continuous NAC chemical reaction process. Test results indicate that the NAC product slurry exhibits a typical non-Newtonian flow behavior. Correlation equations for the slurry's rheological properties and heat transfer rate in a pipe flow have been developed; these should prove valuable in the design of a full-scale NAC processing plant. The 20-percent slurry exhibited a typical dilatant (shear thickening) behavior and was in the turbulent flow regime due to its lower viscosity. The 40-percent slurry exhibited a typical pseudoplastic (shear thinning) behavior and remained in the laminar flow regime throughout its experimental range. The reactions were found to be more efficient in the lower temperature range investigated. With respect to leachability, the experimental final NAC ceramic waste form is comparable to the final product of vitrification, the technology chosen by DOE to treat these wastes. As the NAC process has the potential of reducing the volume of nitrate-based radioactive liquid waste by as much as 70 percent, it not only promises to enhance environmental remediation efforts but also effect substantial cost savings. ^
