Objectives: This study sought to investigate the effect of a multiple micronutrient supplement on left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in patients with heart failure. Background: Observational studies suggest that patients with heart failure have reduced intake and lower concentrations of a number of micronutrients. However, there have been very few intervention studies investigating the effect of micronutrient supplementation in patients with heart failure. Methods: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study involving 74 patients with chronic stable heart failure that compared multiple micronutrient supplementation taken once daily versus placebo for 12 months. The primary endpoint was LVEF assessed by cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging or 3-dimensional echocardiography. Secondary endpoints were Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire score, 6-min walk test distance, blood concentrations of N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide, C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, and urinary levels of 8-iso-prostaglandin F2 alpha. Results: Blood concentrations of a number of micronutrients increased significantly in the micronutrient supplement group, indicating excellent compliance with the intervention. There was no significant difference in mean LVEF at 12 months between treatment groups after adjusting for baseline (mean difference: 1.6%, 95% confidence interval: -2.6 to 5.8, p = 0.441). There was also no significant difference in any of the secondary endpoints at 12 months between treatment groups. Conclusions: This study provides no evidence to support the routine treatment of patients with chronic stable heart failure with a multiple micronutrient supplement. To develop a detection method for human pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes, novel specific antibodies were obtained from hybridoma libraries generated by using formalin-killed and heat-killed L. monocytogenes as immunogens. Several monoclonal antibodies found to be specific to Listeria spp or L. monocytogenes were evaluated for their applicability as binders for bead array and sandwichELISA for detection of L. monocytogenes in buffer and in 11 different food types. The bead array format consistently demonstrated lower detection limits and was less affected by interference from food matrices than the sandwich ELISA format. However, the obtained detection limits were not sufficient to satisfy the required standard for L. monocytogenes testing. Therefore, the international organizationfor standardization (ISO 11290-1:1996) methods for pre-enrichment and enrichment were employed to increase the bacteria numbers. When compared to the standard plating method, the bead array was able to detect the bacteria with the same accuracy even at the 1 CFU level after only 24 hours of the enrichment period. In addition, Listeria-specific 3C3 and L. monocytogenes-specific 7G4 antibodies were successfully employed to construct a multiplex detection for Listeria, Salmonella and Campylobacter in a bead array format by combining with commercial Salmonella-specific and available Campylobacter-specific antibodies.

To develop a chemical inhibitor that can efficiently suppress coal oxidation, nine tetraalkylphosphonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) and one imidazolium-based IL [1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([AMIm]Cl)] were examined as additives. These ILs were used to treat and investigate the inhibitory effect on the oxidation activity and the structure of lignite coal. Characterization using thermogravimetric analysis showed that phosphonium-based ILs are able to inhibit coal oxidation up to 400 degrees C with the tributylethylphosphonium diethylphosphate ([P-4,P-4,P-4,P-2][DEP]) found to be the most effective. In contrast to the tetraalkylphosphonium-based ILs, inhibition using [AMIm]Cl was only found to be effective at temperatures below 250 degrees C, indicating that the tetraallcylphosphonium-based ILs may be more suitable for the future application of suppressing coal spontaneous combustion over a wide range of temperatures. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic data showed that the various functional groups change in the coal following IL treatment, which are a decrease in the minerals and hydrogen bonds in all treated coals, while decreased aliphatic hydrocarbon and increased carbonyl bonds only appeared in some samples. During the oxidation of coal, the decomposition of aliphatic hydrocarbon groups is inhibited and the formation of carbonyl groups is delayed, so that the evolved gas concentration decreased, as shown by the temperature-programmed oxidation-mass spectrometry results. The deployment of the [P-4,P-4,P-4,P-2][ DEP] and tributylmethylphosphonium methylsulfate Its as additives also show good inhibitory effect on coal oxidation over the temperature range studied, and a relatively stronger interaction between [P-4,P-4,P-4,P-2] [DEP] and coal is demonstrated by the additive model.

In this paper, we explore various arithmetic units for possible use in high-speed, high-yield ALUs operated at scaled supply voltage with adaptive clock stretching. We demonstrate that careful logic optimization of the existing arithmetic units (to create hybrid units) indeed make them further amenable to supply voltage scaling. Such hybrid units result from mixing right amount of fast arithmetic into the slower ones. Simulations on different hybrid adder and multipliers in BPTM 70 nm technology show 18%-50% improvements in power compared to standard adders with only 2%-8% increase in die-area at iso-yield. These optimized datapath units can be used to construct voltage scalable robust ALUs that can operate at high clock frequency with minimal performance degradation due to occasional clock stretching. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper we propose a design methodology for low-power high-performance, process-variation tolerant architecture for arithmetic units. The novelty of our approach lies in the fact that possible delay failures due to process variations and/or voltage scaling are predicted in advance and addressed by employing an elastic clocking technique. The prediction mechanism exploits the dependence of delay of arithmetic units upon input data patterns and identifies specific inputs that activate the critical path. Under iso-yield conditions, the proposed design operates at a lower scaled down Vdd without any performance degradation, while it ensures a superlative yield under a design style employing nominal supply and transistor threshold voltage. Simulation results show power savings of upto 29%, energy per computation savings of upto 25.5% and yield enhancement of upto 11.1% compared to the conventional adders and multipliers implemented in the 70nm BPTM technology. We incorporated the proposed modules in the execution unit of a five stage DLX pipeline to measure performance using SPEC2000 benchmarks [9]. Maximum area and throughput penalty obtained were 10% and 3% respectively.

The reactions of enantiopure cyclohexene epoxides and trans-1,2-bromoacetates, derived from the corresponding substituted benzene cis-dihydrodiol metabolites, with nitrogen nucleophiles, were examined and possible mechanisms proposed. An initial objective was the synthesis of new 1,2-aminoalcohol enantiomers as potential chiral ligands and synthetic scaffolds for library generation. These apparently simple substitution reactions proved to be more complex than initially anticipated and were found to involve a combination of different reaction mechanisms. Allylic trans-1,2-azidohydrins were prepared by Lewis acid-catalysed ring-opening of cyclic vinyl epoxides with sodium azide via an S(N)2 mechanism. On heating, these trans-1,2-azidohydrins isomerized to the corresponding trans-1,4-azidohydrins via a suprafacial allyl azide [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement mechanism. Conversion of a 1,2-azidohydrin to a 1,2-azidoacetate moved the equilibrium position in favour of the 1,4-substitution product. Allylic trans-1,2-bromoacetates reacted with sodium azide at room temperature to give C-2 and C-4 substituted products. A clean inversion of configuration at C-2 was found, as expected, from a concerted S(N)2-pathway. However, substitution at C-4 was not stereoselective and resulted in mixtures of 1,4-cis and 1,4-trans products. This observation can be rationalized in terms of competitive S(N)2 and S(N)2 reactions allied to a [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement. cis-1,2-Azidohydrins and cis-1,2-azidoacetates were much more prone to rearrange than the corresponding trans-isomers. Reaction of the softer tosamide nucleophile with trans-1,2-bromoacetates resulted, predominantly, in C-4 substitution via a syn-S(N)2 mechanism. One application of the reaction of secondary amines with allylic cyclohexene epoxides, to give trans-1,2-aminoalcohols, is in the synthesis of the anticholinergic drug vesamicol, via an S(N)2 mechanism. Currently there is no reliable objective method to quantify the setting properties of acrylic bone cements within an operating theatre environment. Ultrasonic technology can be used to determine the acoustic properties of the polymerising bone cement, which are linked to material properties and provide indications of the physical and chemical changes occurring within the cement. The focus of this study was the critical evaluation of pulse-echo ultrasonic test method in determining the setting and mechanical properties of three different acrylic bone cement when prepared under atmospheric and vacuum mixing conditions. Results indicated that the ultrasonic pulse-echo technique provided a highly reproducible and accurate method of monitoring the polymerisation reaction and indicating the principal setting parameters when compared to ISO 5833 standard, irrespective of the acrylic bone cement or mixing method used. However, applying the same test method to predict the final mechanical properties of acrylic bone cement did not prove a wholly accurate approach. Inhomogeneities within the cement microstructure and specimen geometry were found to have a significant influence on mechanical property predictions. Consideration of all the results suggests that the non-invasive and non-destructive pulse-echo ultrasonic test method is an effective and reliable method for following the full polymerisation reaction of acrylic bone cement in real-time and then determining the setting properties within a surgical theatre environment. However the application of similar technology for predicting the final mechanical properties of acrylic bone cement on a consistent basis may prove difficult.

The initial composition of acrylic bone cement along with the mixing and delivery technique used can influence its final properties and therefore its clinical success in vivo. The polymerisation of acrylic bone cement is complex with a number of processes happening simultaneously. Acrylic bone cement mixing and delivery systems have undergone several design changes in their advancement, although the cement constituents themselves have remained unchanged since they were first used. This study was conducted to determine the factors that had the greatest effect on the final properties of acrylic bone cement using a pre-filled bone cement mixing and delivery system. A design of experiments (DoE) approach was used to determine the impact of the factors associated with this mixing and delivery method on the final properties of the cement produced. The DoE illustrated that all factors present within this study had a significant impact on the final properties of the cement. An optimum cement composition was hypothesised and tested. This optimum recipe produced cement with final mechanical and thermal properties within the clinical guidelines and stated by ISO 5833 (International Standard Organisation (ISO), International standard 5833: implants for surgery—acrylic resin cements, 2002), however the low setting times observed would not be clinically viable and could result in complications during the surgical technique. As a result further development would be required to improve the setting time of the cement in order for it to be deemed suitable for use in total joint replacement surgery.

Hip replacement surgery is amongst the most common orthopaedic operations performed in the UK. Aseptic loosening is responsible for 40% of hip revision procedures. Aseptic loosening is a result of cement mantle fatigue. The aim of the current study is to analyse the effect of nanoscale Graphene Oxide (GO) on the mechanical properties of orthopaedic bone cement. Study Design A experimental thermal and mechanical analysis was conducted in a laboratory set up conforming to international standards for bone cement testing according to ISO 5583. Testing was performed on control cement samples of Colacryl bone cement, and additional samples reinforced with variable wt% of Graphene Oxide containing composites – 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 1.0% GO loading. Pilot Data Porosity demonstrated a linear relationship with increasing wt% loading compared to control (p<0.001). Thermal characterisation demonstrated maximal temperature during polymerization, and generated exotherm were inversely proportional to w%t loading (p<0.05) Fatigue strength performed on the control and 0.1 and 0.25%wt loadings of GO demonstrate increased average cycles to failure compared to control specimens. A right shift of the Weibull curve was demonstrated for both wt% available currently. Logistic regression analysis for failure demonstrated significant increases in number of cycles to failure for both specimens compared to a control (p<0.001). Forward Plan Early results convey positive benefits at low wt% loadings of GO containing bone cement. Study completion and further analysis is required in order to elude to the optimum w%t of GO which conveys the greatest mechanical advantage.

Herein, we report the densities and speeds of sound in binary mixtures of three hydrophobic and one hydrophilic ionic liquids: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, [C4mim][NTf2], 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, [C4mpyr][NTf2], 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, [C3mim][NTf2] and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate, [C2mim][SCN], with water at 298.15 K and 0.1 MPa. The concentration range of water, which encompassed relatively small values well below the saturation point, is often regarded as an impurity for hydrophobic ionic liquids. On the basis of experimental results the molar volume, adiabatic molar compressibility, partial molar volume and apparent molar volume, as well as, partial molar and apparent molar isentropic compressibility properties were then calculated. Interesting results are obtained using the solutions based on the hydrophilic [C2mim][SCN], since these mixtures are characterized by relatively low density and high values of speed of sound. Furthermore, the partial molar volumes and partial molar adiabatic compressibilities of water in solution with [C2mim][SCN] are the lowest among the investigated in mixtures with ionic liquids. However, in the case of the hydrophobic ionic liquid solutions, only small differences are observed for molar adiabatic compressibilities with the change of the cation structure, i.e. for water + [C4mim][NTf2] or + [C4mpyr][NTf2]. A more pronounced difference has been observed for the partial molar compressibility of water in solutions with these two ionic liquids.

A new technological approach in the analysis and forensic interpretation of Total Hydrocarbons in soils and waters using 2D Gas Chromatography method (GC-GC) was developed alongside environmental forensic and the assessment models to provide better customer products for the environmental industry.
The objective was to develop an analytical methodology for TPH CWG. Raw data from this method is then to be evaluated for forensic interpretation and risk assessment modelling. Access will be made available to the expertise in methods of forensic tracing contaminant sources, transport modelling, human health risk modelling and detailed quantitative risk assessment.
The quantification of internal standards was key to the development of this method. As the laboratory does not test for TPH in 1D, it was requested during INAB ISO 17025 audit to individually map out where each compound falls chromatographically in the 2D. This was done through comparing carbon equivalent numbers to the n-alkane carbons. This proved e.g. 2-methylnaphthalene has 11 carbons in its structure; its carbon equivalent is 12.84 , the result of which falls within the band of Aromatic eC12-eC16 as opposed to expected eC10-eC12. This was carried out for all 16 PAH (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o, m and p-xylenes). The n-alkanes were also assigned to their corresponding aliphatic bands e.g. nC8 would be expected to be in nC8-nC10.
The method was validated through a designated systematic experimental protocol and was challenged with spikes of known concentration of hydrocarbon parameters such as recoveries, precision, bias and linearity. The method was verified by testing a certified reference material which was used as a proficiency round of testing for numerous laboratories.
It is hoped that the method will be used in conjunction with the analysis through Bonn Agreement with their OSINet group. This is a panel of experts and laboratories (including CLS) who forensically identify oil spill contamination from a water source.
This method can prove itself to be a robust method and benefit the industry for contaminated land and water but the method needs to be seen as separate from the regular 1D chromatography. It will help identify contaminants and assist consultants, regulators, clients and scientists valuable information not seen in 1D

The use of an acid violet 7 (AV7) smart ink to assess the activity of photocatalytic paint is demonstrated. A linear correlation is established between the change in oxidized dye concentration, as measured by diffuse reflectance, and the change in the green component of the RGB color values, obtained using a portable hand-held scanner, suggesting that such tests can be monitored easily using an inexpensive piece of hand-held office equipment, as opposed to an expensive lab-based instrument, such as a diffuse reflectance UV/vis spectrophotometer. The bleaching of the AV7 follows first order kinetics, at a rate that is linearly dependent upon the UVA irradiance (0.30–3.26 mW cm–2). A comparison of relative rate of bleaching of the AV7 ink with the relative rate of removal of NOx, as determined using the ISO test (ISO 22197-1:2007), established a linear relationship between the two sets of results and the relevance of this correlation is discussed briefly.

Three photocatalyst inks based on the redox dyes, Resazurin (Rz), Basic Blue 66 (BB66) and Acid Violet 7 (AV7), are used to assess the photocatalytic activities of a variety of different materials, such as commercial paint, tiles and glass and laboratory made samples of sol–gel coated glass and paint, which collectively exhibit a wide range of activities that cannot currently be probed by any one of the existing ISO tests. Unlike the ISO tests, the ink tests are fast (typically <10 min), simple to employ and inexpensive. Previous work indicates that the Rz ink test at least correlates linearly with other photocatalytic tests such as the photomineralisation of stearic acid. The average time to bleach 90% of the key RGB colour component of the ink, red for Rz and BB66 inks and green for AV7 ink, is determined, ttb(90), for eight samples of each of the different materials tested. Five laboratories conducted the tests and the results revealed an average repeatability and reproducibility of: ca. 11% and ca 21%, respectively, which compare well with those reported for the current ISO tests. Additional work on commercial self-cleaning glass using an Rz ink showed that the change in the red component of the RGB image of the ink correlated linearly with that of the change of absorbance at 608 nm, as measured using UV/vis spectroscopy, and the change in the a* component of the Lab colour analysis of the ink, as measured using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. As a consequence, all three methods generate the same ttb(90). The advantages of the RGB digital image analysis method are discussed briefly.
