The quadrennial need study was developed to assist in identifying county highway financial needs (construction, rehabilitation, maintenance, and administration) and in the distribution of the road use tax fund (RUTF) among the counties in the state. During the period since the need study was first conducted using HWYNEEDS software, between 1982 and 1998, there have been large fluctuations in the level of funds distributed to individual counties. A recent study performed by Jim Cable (HR-363, 1993), found that one of the major factors affecting the volatility in the level of fluctuations is the quality of the pavement condition data collected and the accuracy of these data. In 1998, the Center for Transportation Research and Education researchers (Maze and Smadi) completed a project to study the feasibility of using automated pavement condition data collected for the Iowa Pavement Management Program (IPMP) for the paved county roads to be used in the HWYNEEDS software (TR-418). The automated condition data are objective and also more current since they are collected in a two year cycle compared to the 10-year cycle used by HWYNEEDS right now. The study proved the use of the automated condition data in HWYNEEDS would be feasible and beneficial in educing fluctuations when applied to a pilot study area. In another recommendation from TR-418, the researchers recommended a full analysis and investigation of HWYNEEDS methodology and parameters (for more information on the project, please review the TR-418 project report). The study reported in this document builds on the previous study on using the automated condition data in HWYNEEDS and covers the analysis and investigation of the HWYNEEDS computer program methodology and parameters. The underlying hypothesis for this study is thatalong with the IPMP automated condition data, some changes need to be made to HWYNEEDS parameters to accommodate the use of the new data, which will stabilize the process of allocating resources and reduce fluctuations from one quadrennial need study to another. Another objective of this research is to investigate the gravel roads needs and study the feasibility of developing a more objective approach to determining needs on the counties gravel road network. This study identifies new procedures by which the HWYNEEDS computer program is used to conduct the quadrennial needs study on paved roads. Also, a new procedure will be developed to determine gravel roads needs outside of the HWYNEED program. Recommendations are identified for the new procedures and also in terms of making changes to the current quadrennial need study. Future research areas are also identified.

We study the dynamics of a water-oil meniscus moving from a smaller to a larger pore. The process is characterised by an abrupt change in the configuration, yielding a sudden energy release. A theoretic study for static conditions provides analytical solutions of the surface energy content of the system. Although the configuration after the sudden energy release is energetically more convenient, an energy barrier must be overcome before the process can happen spontaneously. The energy barrier depends on the system geometry and on the flow parameters. The analytical results are compared to numerical simulations that solve the full Navier-Stokes equation in the pore space and employ the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method to track the evolution of the interface. First, the numerical simulations of a quasi-static process are validated by comparison with the analytical solutions for a static meniscus, then numerical simulations with varying injection velocity are used to investigate dynamic effects on the configuration change. During the sudden energy jump the system exhibits an oscillatory behaviour. Extension to more complex geometries might elucidate the mechanisms leading to a dynamic capillary pressure and to bifurcations in final distributions of fluid phases in porous

La littérature Avatamsaka comprend un ensemble considérable de textes canoniques et de commentaires qui décrivent la carrière du Bodhisattva par étapes. Le principal texte canonique existe en deux versions chinoises, celle de VAvtamsaka ancien (T278, 60 juan) traduite en 418 à 420 et celle de VAvtamsaka nouveau (T279, 80 juan) traduite 695 à 699. La méthode que j'ai choisie pour mon travail consiste principalement, en suivant les étapes de la carrière du Bodhisattva dans VAvatamsaksa, à extraire et à traduire des passages des commentaire de Fazang (643-712) basé sur la version ancienne (T1733) et de Li Tongxuan (635-730) fondé sur la version nouvelle (T1739). A travers ces traductions, nous avons essayé de pénétrer la doctrine de l'école Huayan. Méthodologie (I-XVII) : Elle présente le tableau des étapes de la carrière du Bodhisattva. dans l'éd. Taisho T278, T279, T293, le commentaire de Fazang et celui de Li Tongxuan, en ajoutant les termes sanscrits du Dasabhûmika-sûtra et du Ganda-vyûha comme une sorte de mots -clefs. Introduction (p. 1-95) : Interprétation du titre de VAvatamsaka chez les maîtres Huayan (p. 3-9). Présenter le tableau des 7 lieux, des 9 assemblées et 39 chapitres de T279 comme la structure de Y Avatamsaka. Ensuite, dans la biographie de Fazang, présenter sa vie (p. 58-61) et ses ouvrages : traduction de leur titre, bref résumé de leur contenu (p. 62-72) ; dans la biographie de Li Tongxuan, présenter sa vie (p. 75-82) et surtout sa pensée original (p. 86-95). Ch. I. L'Eveil correct (p. 96-161) ; Ce chapitre présente d'emblée l'Eveil correct, qui est le fruit de Buddha et le terminus de la carrière du Bodhisattva. C'est la raison pour laquelle les commentaires présentent l'interprétation de l'accomplissement pour la première fois de l'Eveil correct ainsi que le champ de Buddha appelé l'univers du trésor de lotus, pour faire produire la pensée de l'Eveil aux êtres. Ch. II. Les dix pensées de foi (p. 162-234) : Cette étape préliminaire consiste à avoir la foi, en d'autres termes, la conviction ou le consentement à l'égard du Dharma du Buddha. Dans ce chapitre, j'ai traduit le passage du commentaire de Li Tongxuan sur le chapitre des noms du Tathâgata (p. 189-234) qui illustre l'étape des dix pensées de foi. Ch. III. Les étapes des Trois Sages (p. 235-290) : Concernant les trois étapes suivantes ; les dix résidences, les dix pratiques et les dix transferts, appelées spécialement les étapes des Trois Sages, j'ai fait un chapitre d'ensemble. Ces étapes montrent symboliquement le chemin ascensionnel dynamique du Sûtra dont les assemblées se déroulent dans les cieux de plus en plus élevés. Conclusion : Dans l'Avatamsaka, j'ai constaté que le sous-jacent est dans le vide ontologique, et le manifeste dans la fantasmagorie phénoménologique. Au fond, dans Y Avatamsaka l'évacuation prajnâpâramitique et la multiplication fantasmagorique sont identiques. Mais fantasmagorie et vide jouent pour ainsi dire à cache-cache ; le vide et la fantasmagorie, entre les deux il n'y a pas d'obstacle, ils surgissent sans cesse en alternance. Donc, on peut dire que Y Avatamsaka exprime une phénoménologie vacuitaire.

Chemical sensing begins when peripheral receptor proteins recognise specific environmental stimuli and translate them into spatial and temporal patterns of sensory neuron activity. The chemosensory system of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has become a dominant model to understand this process, through its accessibility to a powerful combination of molecular, genetic and electrophysiological analysis. Recent results have revealed many surprises in the biology of peripheral chemosensation in Drosophila, including novel structural and signalling properties of the insect odorant receptors (ORs), combinatorial mechanisms of chemical recognition by the gustatory receptors (GRs), and the implication of Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) ion channels as a novel class of chemosensory receptors.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of syncope remains often unstructured. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of a standardized protocol designed to improve the diagnosis of syncope. METHODS: Consecutive patients with syncope presenting to the emergency departments of two primary and tertiary care hospitals over a period of 18 months underwent a two-phase evaluation including: 1) noninvasive assessment (phase I); and 2) specialized tests (phase II), if syncope remained unexplained after phase I. During phase II, the evaluation strategy was alternately left to physicians in charge of patients (control), or guided by a standardized protocol relying on cardiac status and frequency of events (intervention). The primary outcomes were the diagnostic yield of each phase, and the impact of the intervention (phase II) measured by multivariable analysis. RESULTS: Among 1725 patients with syncope, 1579 (92%) entered phase I which permitted to establish a diagnosis in 1061 (67%) of them, including mainly reflex causes and orthostatic hypotension. Five-hundred-eighteen patients (33%) were considered as having unexplained syncope and 363 (70%) entered phase II. A cause for syncope was found in 67 (38%) of 174 patients during intervention periods, compared to 18 (9%) of 189 during control (p<0.001). Compared to control periods, intervention permitted diagnosing more cardiac (8%, vs 3%, p=0.04) and reflex syncope (25% vs 6%, p<0.001), and increased the odds of identifying a cause for syncope by a factor of 4.5 (95% CI: 2.6-8.7, p<0.001). Overall, adding the diagnostic yield obtained during phase I and phase II (intervention periods) permitted establishing the cause of syncope in 76% of patients. CONCLUSION: Application of a standardized diagnostic protocol in patients with syncope improved the likelihood of identifying a cause for this symptom. Future trials should assess the efficacy of diagnosis-specific therapy.

With the objective of verifying the response of Euterpe oleracea seedlings to seven arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi species, an experimental trial was carried out under greenhouse conditions. Seeds of E. oleracea were sown in carbonized rice husk. Germinating seeds were initially transferred to plastic cups, containing fumigated Reddish Yellow Quartz Sand and inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Two months later, seedlings were transferred to 2 kg black plastic bags, containing the same soil without fumigation. Plant growth and mineral nutrients were evaluated nine months after mycorrhizal inoculation. Differential effects were observed among the species tested, with Scutellispora gilmorei being the most effective ones in promoting growth and nutrient content of E. oleracea seedlings. The increment resulted from inoculation with S. gilmorei were 92% in total plant height, 116% in stem diameter, 361% in dry matter production, 191% in N, 664% in P, 46% in K, 562% in Ca, 363% in Mg and 350% in Zn contents, comparing to uninoculated controls. Infected root length was positively correlated to nutrient content and plant growth. It was concluded that growth and nutrient uptake of E. oleracea seedlings could be significantly improved by inoculation of effective arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

This study investigates the sedimentological and geochemical changes that occurred during the last 2200 years in the meromictic Lake Lucerne (Switzerland), one of the largest freshwater lakes of Central Europe. The stable isotope composition (delta C-13 and delta O-18 values) of bulk carbonates is compared to changes in grain-size distribution (clay and silt fraction), natural trace element input (titanium and thorium concentrations), and organic material abundance (C-org, nitrogen and phosphorus) and composition (C/N ratios and hydrogen and oxygen indexes). A drop in carbonate accumulation and in the delta O-18 values of sediments between ca. AD 500 and 700 followed a large and consistent rise in chemical weathering, marked by increases in the silicate-clay fraction and in crustal element concentrations. During the following millennium, there was a long-term decreasing trend in the lithogenic trace element input and in the phosphorus loading, suggesting decreasing terrigeneous input from runoff water. The major sedimentological change over the studied period occurred after ca. AD 1800 with a significant increase in the erosion-driven silt-fraction and in the sedimentation rate. During the last century, human-induced increase in nutrient input to the lake highly enhanced the accumulation of organic matter in sediment. Changes in nutrients and oxygen conditions in the hypolimnion of Lake Lucerne during the eutrophication period (i.e., the last 40 years) highly modified the geochemical fluxes compared to the relatively stable oligotrophic conditions that prevailed during the previous 2000 years. Before the 19th century, climate driven meromixis had a limited impact on the organic matter flux to the sediments, but the accumulation of carbonate considerably decreased during periods of lower mechanical erosion rates and high chemical weathering rates. Object The goal of this study was to establish whether clear patterns of initial pain freedom could be identified when treating patients with classic trigeminal neuralgia (TN) by using Gamma Knife surgery (GKS). The authors compared hypesthesia and pain recurrence rates to see if statistically significant differences could be found. Methods Between July 1992 and November 2010, 737 patients presenting with TN underwent GKS and prospective evaluation at Timone University Hospital in Marseille, France. In this study the authors analyzed the cases of 497 of these patients, who participated in follow-up longer than 1 year, did not have megadolichobasilar artery- or multiple sclerosis-related TN, and underwent GKS only once; in other words, the focus was on cases of classic TN with a single radiosurgical treatment. Radiosurgery was performed with a Leksell Gamma Knife (model B, C, or Perfexion) using both MR and CT imaging targeting. A single 4-mm isocenter was positioned in the cisternal portion of the trigeminal nerve at a median distance of 7.8 mm (range 4.5-14 mm) anterior to the emergence of the nerve. A median maximum dose of 85 Gy (range 70-90 Gy) was delivered. Using empirical methods and assisted by a chart with clear cut-off periods of pain free distribution, the authors were able to divide patients who experienced freedom from pain into 3 separate groups: patients who became pain free within the first 48 hours post-GKS; those who became pain free between 48 hours and 30 days post-GKS; and those who became pain free more than 30 days after GKS. Results The median age in the 497 patients was 68.3 years (range 28.1-93.2 years). The median follow-up period was 43.75 months (range 12-174.41 months). Four hundred fifty-four patients (91.34%) were initially pain free within a median time of 10 days (range 1-459 days) after GKS. One hundred sixty-nine patients (37.2%) became pain free within the first 48 hours (Group PF(≤ 48 hours)), 194 patients (42.8%) between posttreatment Day 3 and Day 30 (Group PF((>48 hours, ≤ 30 days))), and 91 patients (20%) after 30 days post-GKS (Group PF(>30 days)). Differences in postoperative hypesthesia were found: in Group PF(≤ 48 hours) 18 patients (13.7%) developed postoperative hypesthesia, compared with 30 patients (19%) in Group PF((>48 hours, ≤ 30 days)) and 22 patients (30.6%) in Group PF(>30 days) (p = 0.014). One hundred fifty-seven patients (34.4%) who initially became free from pain experienced a recurrence of pain with a median delay of 24 months (range 0.62-150.06 months). There were no statistically significant differences between the patient groups with respect to pain recurrence: 66 patients (39%) in Group PF(≤ 48 hours) experienced pain recurrence, compared with 71 patients (36.6%) in Group PF((>48 hours, ≤ 30 days)) and 27 patients (29.7%) in Group PF(>30 days) (p = 0.515). Conclusions A substantial number of patients (169 cases, 37.2%) became pain free within the first 48 hours. The rate of hypesthesia was higher in patients who became pain free more than 30 days after GKS, with a statistically significant difference between patient groups (p = 0.014).

Cette recherche se concentre sur l'enquête judiciaire qui porte sur la criminalité organisée : Cette notion doit être ici entendue comme un phénomène criminel formé par l'ensemble des organisations criminelles au sens large, soit comme tout groupement criminel, sans distinction a priori de son degré d'organisation, dont le crime organisé ou la mafia représente la forme extrême. Ce projet propose une méthode de travail basée sur un modèle d'organisation du flux de données dans l'enquête judiciaire. L'architecture de ce modèle est fondée sur deux composants interconnectés et informatisés constituant un système d'aide aux investigations criminelles. Le premier composant (banque de données nationale JANUS) est alimenté et essentiellement partagé par l'ensemble des polices Suisses. Il répertorie des informations sur les personnes et des événements qui relèvent de la criminalité organisée. Le second composant est temporaire et est sollicité lorsque des affaires particulières nécessitent l'intégration d'un extrait d'informations provenant de JANUS, ainsi que l'absorption rapide d'informations spécifiques éventuellement pas encore confirmées (par exemple provenant d'informateurs) et qui ne présentent pas un intérêt général immédiat.
