We sought to determine the extent to which red–green, colour–opponent mechanisms in the human visual system play a role in the perception of drifting luminance–modulated targets. Contrast sensitivity for the directional discrimination of drifting luminance–modulated (yellow–black) test sinusoids was measured following adaptation to isoluminant red–green sinusoids drifting in either the same or opposite direction. When the test and adapt stimuli drifted in the same direction, large sensitivity losses were evident at all test temporal frequencies employed (1–16 Hz). The magnitude of the loss was independent of temporal frequency. When adapt and test stimuli drifted in opposing directions, large sensitivity losses were evident at lower temporal frequencies (1–4 Hz) and declined with increasing temporal frequency. Control studies showed that this temporal–frequency–dependent effect could not reflect the activity of achromatic units. Our results provide evidence that chromatic mechanisms contribute to the perception of luminance–modulated motion targets drifting at speeds of up to at least 32°s-1. We argue that such mechanisms most probably lie within a parvocellular–dominated cortical visual pathway, sensitive to both chromatic and luminance modulation, but only weakly selective for the direction of stimulus motion.

Objective. To examine children's knowledge, understanding and experience of stress from 4 to 11 years of age across four age groups (4–5, 6–7, 8–9, and 10–11 years old). Methods. A semi-structured interview format was used to elicit information from 50 children about their understanding and experience of stress. Results. Most children were able to define stress, with older children providing more complex responses. Many children had indirect and/or personal experience of stress. Younger children were more likely than older children to report that there was nothing people could do to stop stress; children reported using both adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies to deal with stress. Conclusion. Some young children have a basic understanding of stress and many have experience of stress; both understanding and experience develop with age. Practice Implications. The research has potential implications for provider-patient communication, particularly within preventative health education and clinically within the field of childhood post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The spectroscopic pump-probe reflectance method was used to investigate recombination dynamics in samples of nanocrystalline silicon embedded in a matrix of hydrogenated amorphous silicon. We found that the dynamics can be described by a rate equation including linear and quadratic terms corresponding to recombination processes associated with impurities and impurity-assisted Auger ionization, respectively. We determined the values of the recombination coefficients using the initial concentrations method. We report the coefficients of 1.5 × 1011 s-1 and 1.1 × 10-10 cm3 s-1 for the impurity-assisted recombination and Auger ionization, respectively.

The shifting of global economic power from mature, established markets to emerging markets (EMs) is a fundamental feature of the new realities in the global political economy. Due to a combination of reasons (such as scarcity of reliable information on management systems of EMs, the growing contribution of human resource management (HRM) towards organisational performance, amongst others), the understanding about the dynamics of management of HRM in the EMs context and the need for proactive efforts by key stakeholders (e.g., multinational and local firms, policy makers and institutions such as trade unions) to develop appropriate HRM practice and policy for EMs has now become more critical than ever. It is more so given the phenomenal significance of the EMs predicted for the future of the global economy. For example, Antoine van Agtmael predicts that: in about 25 years the combined gross national product (GNP) of emergent markets will overtake that of currently mature economies causing a major shift in the centre of gravity of the global economy away from the developed to emerging economies. (van Agtmael 2007: 10–11) Despite the present (late 2013 and early 2014) slowdown in the contribution of EMs towards the global industrial growth (e.g., Das, 2013; Reuters, 2014), EMs are predicted to produce 70 per cent of world GDP growth and a further ten years later, their equity market capitalisation is expected to reach US$ 80 trillion, 1.2 times more than the developed world (see Goldman Sachs, 2010).

_______ This paper presents the in-depth analysis of results from a survey of students from secondary and tertiary education. The survey was conducted by researchers from the department of environmental economics and technology of the Corvinus University of Budapest in the framework of the project titeld „sustainable consumption, production and communication” supported by the Norwegian Fund. The environmental consciousness and consumer behaviour of different groups of young people are compared, allowing identification of the main focus points and tools of environmental education. Multidimensional scaling is used to examine which characteristics of the students are related and which point in opposite directions. Similarities and differences between respondents were mapped through cluster analysis and relatively homogeneous groups were indentified. The results are used to make suggestions for the development of environmental education.

Gemcitabine (2', 2'-difluoro-2'-deoxycytidine or dFdC) has become a standard chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of several cellular and solid tumor- related malignancies. Gemcitabine's anti-cancer activity has been attributed to its inhibitory effects on the cell's DNA synthetic machinery resulting in the induction of cell arrest and apoptosis. Despite its broad application, treatment capacity with this drug is limited due to complicated administration schedules stemming from low bioavailability and tumor resistance associated with its rampant intracellular enzymatic inactivation. The aim of this study is to characterize the anti-cancer activity of novel designed and synthesized gemcitabine analogues, that were modified with long alkyl chains at the 4-amino group of the cytosine ring. This study proposes the use of these alternative derivatives of gemcitabine that not only uphold current drug standards for potency, but additionally confer chemical stability against enzymatic inactivation. During screening conducted to identifY prospective gem-analogue candidates, I observed the potent anticancer properties ofthree 4-N modified compounds on MCF-7 breast adenocarcinoma cells. Experiments described here with these compounds referred to as LCO, LCAO, and Gvaldo, evaluate their cytotoxicity on MCF-7 cells at the concentrations of 25flM and 2.5flM, and assess their inhibitory effects on DNA synthesis and cell cycle progression using sulphorhodamine B and bromodeoxyuridine assays as well as flow cytometric analyses, respectively. Among the compounds tested, LCO was shown to be most active inhibitor of DNA synthesis (a=.05; p<.OOl) as reflected as a distinct GO/Gl versus S-phase arrest in the 25flM and 2.5flM treatments, respectively. Together, these experiments provide preliminary evidence for the clinical application of LCO-like gemcitabine derivatives as a novel treatment for breast cancer.

 Guatemala is not a failed state and is unlikely to become one in the near future. Although the state currently fails to provide adequate security to its citizens or an appropriate range of effective social programs, it does supply a functioning electoral democracy, sound economic management, and a promising new antipoverty program, My Family Progresses (MIFAPRO).  Guatemala is a weak state. The principal security threats represented by expanding Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DTOs), criminal parallel powers, and urban gangs have overwhelmed the resources of the under-resourced and compromised criminal justice system. The UN-sponsored International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), however, has demonstrated that progress against organized crime is possible.  The principal obstacles to strengthening the Guatemalan state lie in the traditional economic elite’s resistance to taxation and the venal political class’ narrow focus on short-term interests. Guatemala lacks a strong, policyoriented, mass-based political party that could develop a coherent national reform program and mobilize public support around it.  The United States should strengthen the Guatemalan state by expanding the Central America Regional Security Initiative (CARSI) and by strongly supporting CICIG, MIFAPRO, and the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).
