[EN] We present in this paper a variational approach to accurately estimate simultaneously the velocity field and its derivatives directly from PIV image sequences. Our method differs from other techniques that have been presented in the literature in the fact that the energy minimization used to estimate the particles motion depends on a second order Taylor development of the flow. In this way, we are not only able to compute the motion vector field, but we also obtain an accurate estimation of their derivatives. Hence, we avoid the use of numerical schemes to compute the derivatives from the estimated flow that usually yield to numerical amplification of the inherent uncertainty on the estimated flow. The performance of our approach is illustrated with the estimation of the motion vector field and the vorticity on both synthetic and real PIV datasets.

The study and understanding of the motion of the fluid phases in a mechanically stirred reactor has always been, and still are, an open problem which absorbs the study and the work of many researchers. In recent decades, thanks to the growing opportunities offered by the development of technology, we have made great strides in the understanding of mixing, one of the major unit operations at the base of many industrial processes. A complete understanding of this process and its optimization for industrial applications is a challenging task due to the complex interactions between the many factors at play that include physical, chemical and biological. The purpose of this thesis is the study of a fluid-mechanically-agitated continuous reactor through the use of optical diagnostic techniques, which allowed to determine the range of motion and the time of perfect homogenization in a reactor of standard geometry in different operating conditions.

The instantaneous three-dimensional velocity field past a bioprosthetic heart valve was measured using tomographic particle image velocimetry (PIV). Two digital cameras were used together with a mirror setup to record PIV images from four different angles. Measurements were conducted in a transparent silicone phantom with a simplified geometry of the aortic root. The refraction indices of the silicone phantom and the working fluid were matched to minimize optical distortion from the flow field to the cameras. The silicone phantom of the aorta was integrated in a flow loop driven by a piston pump. Measurements were conducted for steady and pulsatile flow conditions. Results of the instantaneous, ensemble and phase averaged flow field are presented. The three-dimensional velocity field reveals a flow topology, which can be related to features of the aortic valve prosthesis.
