Greece back on centre stage: the results of a déjà vu summit. EPC Post-Summit Analysis, 23 March 2015

The March 2015 European Council might not enter history books, but the outcome of an informal ‘mini summit’ between seven EU leaders has the potential to prepare the grounds for a breakthrough in the negotiations between Athens and its lenders. In this post-summit analysis, Janis A. Emmanouilidis argues that the search for a compromise promises to be a cumbersome, time-consuming and nerveracking exercise. But a solution now seems possible, proving all those doomsayers who have been predicting a ‘Grexit’ or ‘Graccident’ wrong. On other topics, EU leaders committed their countries to build an Energy Union, although questions remain about whether member states will agree to cede sovereignty on a number of significant points. This analysis looks also at the economic issues dealt with at the Spring Summit, with a focus on the perspectives for the European Semester and the Juncker Investment Plan. It ends with a summary of decisions taken on a number of other topics, including relations with Russia and Ukraine, the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit, developments in Libya and in Tunisia, and the endorsement of the Council’s new Secretary General.

Vučić’s plebiscite almost slipped on arithmetics. EPC Commentary, 29 April 2016

As largely anticipated, the incumbent Prime Minister of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, secured another four years in power at the snap elections that took place on 24 April. However, the results suggest that Vučić has overplayed his hand with this personal plebiscite: simple arithmetics unmasked his exaggerated hope to wipe out the opposition and consolidate political dominance. This might bode well for political pluralism but voters’ preferences and the affixed party options caution against taking Serbia’s commitment to European integration for granted.

The hypocaloric diet in type 2 diabetes - déjà vu

Dietary modification is considered a cornerstone in the management of diabetes superimposed upon which are pharmacological therapies as required. The value of hypocaloric diets in reducing and eliminating glycosuria was extolled in the pre-insulin era. A common feature of the nutrient balance of these diets was restriction in the availability of carbohydrate. Herein we review the use of diet as therapy in the past and discuss the rationale for hypocaloric dietary management of type 2 diabetes in the 21st century, drawing comparisons with bariatric surgery and considering why weight loss is particularly difficult for overweight and obese individuals with type 2 diabetes. © SAGE Publications 2012.

”Vu-huu, vu-huu Pikkuveli! Nyt surffataan täällä ylhäällä!” Lastenkirjallisuuden käsittely haastattelun ja sadutuksen menetelmillä osallisuuden näkökulmasta

Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin minkälaista tietoa haastattelu ja sadutus antavat lasten kokemuksesta lastenkirjallisuudesta ja miten nämä tiedonhankintatavat näyttäytyvät suhteessa lapsen osallisuuteen. Kielellisten taitojen perusteella tutkimuskohteeksi valittiin esikouluikäiset lapset. Tutkimuksen otos oli yhden kokopäiväryhmän esikoululaiset, joista neljä viidestä halusi olla mukana tutkimuksessa. Lapsille luettiin pienryhmässä kirja Pikkuveli ja Katto-Kassinen. Tämän jälkeen heidät haastateltiin ja sadutettiin. Aineisto järjestettiin sisällönanalysointimenetelmin. Haastattelu toi näkyväksi lapsen muistia ja ymmärrystä kirjan henkilöistä ja tapahtumista. Sadutuksessa näkyi enemmänkin lapsen intuitio kirjasta ja sen päähenkilön hahmosta. Sadutuksen kautta lapset ilmaisivat positiivisia mielikuviaan kirjasta, kun taas haastattelu toi esiin laajemman skaalan kirjan sisäisistä skeemoista. Sadutus menetelmänä on osallistavampi kuin haastattelu, mutta molemmissa menetelmissä osallisuuden aste riippuu lapsen tietoisuudesta taustalla vaikuttavasta ajatusmaailmasta. Miksi tätä tehdään ja kuka on päättänyt minun osallistumisestani toimintaan? Tutkimusta tehdessä selkeni myös, että molemmat tavat voivat olla monella eri osallisuuden tasolla, riippuen juuri vastauksista aiempiin kysymyksiin. Myös lapsen ollessa tilanteessa toimijana, voi osallisuuden taso muuttua riippuen lapsen tai tilanteen kehittymisestä.

Migração e referenciais identificatórios: linguagem e preconceito

A ausência de diálogos no mundo massificado impõe um discurso padronizado. Tenta-se eliminar as diferenças e os limites que estruturam as identidades são ameaçados. A violência desse mundo joga para a periferia grandes segmentos da população, condenados a viver em condições desumanas. Migrantes e imigrantes, desenraizados dos fundamentos de suas identidades, constituem parte expressiva dessa população. Grandes metrópoles, como São Paulo, são verdadeiros lócus do embate intercultural que os ameaça. Nossa discussão se apóia em trabalho de pesquisa anterior com crianças nordestinas em escolas paulistas - pudemos constatar o preconceito, a humilhação que atingem essa população. O ponto de partida para a humilhação é, quase sempre, sua linguagem regional, vista como errada e inadequada. A lingüística e a sociolingüística nos mostram o contrário. Entretanto, tudo que enraíza e fortalece a identidade é negado. A “barbárie civilizada” destrói desejo, sonhos, esperança, alteridade.
