Atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy was conducted on cleaved single crystals of the cubic perovskite Pr0.68Pb0.32MnO3.Several different surface configurations could be resolved including a frequent square arrangement with atomic distances in excellent agreement to the bulk lattice constant of the cubic structure. We also observed stripe formation and a surface reconstruction. The latter is likely related to a polar rare earth-oxygen terminated surface. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics.

We study the properties of Dirac fermions on the surface of a topological insulator in the presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields. We provide an exact solution to this problem and demonstrate that, in contrast to their counterparts in graphene, these Dirac fermions allow relative tuning of the orbital and Zeeman effects of an applied magnetic field by a crossed electric field along the surface. We also elaborate and extend our earlier results on normal-metal-magnetic film-normal metal (NMN) and normal-metal-barrier-magnetic film (NBM) junctions of topological insulators [S. Mondal, D. Sen, K. Sengupta, and R. Shankar, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 046403 (2010)]. For NMN junctions, we show that for Dirac fermions with Fermi velocity vF, the transport can be controlled using the exchange field J of a ferromagnetic film over a region of width d. The conductance of such a junction changes from oscillatory to a monotonically decreasing function of d beyond a critical J which leads to the possible realization of magnetic switches using these junctions. For NBM junctions with a potential barrier of width d and potential V-0, we find that beyond a critical J, the criteria of conductance maxima changes from chi=eV(0)d/h upsilon(F)=n pi to chi=(n+1/2)pi for integer n. Finally, we compute the subgap tunneling conductance of a normal-metal-magnetic film-superconductor junctions on the surface of a topological insulator and show that the position of the peaks of the zero-bias tunneling conductance can be tuned using the magnetization of the ferromagnetic film. We point out that these phenomena have no analogs in either conventional two-dimensional materials or Dirac electrons in graphene and suggest experiments to test our theory.

As-deposited high Tc superconducting Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x films with zero resistance temperatures of similar, equals89 K and critical current densities about 0.7×106 A/cm2 at 77 K have been reproducibly fabricated at a substrate holder temperature at 650°C, using pulsed laser deposition, without post-annealing. One key to these results is the injection of gaseous oxygen into laser produced plume just in front of the target. In this way, the correct amount of oxygen is incorporated into the as-grown film so that post-deposition treatment becomes unnecessary. Axial ion channeling in these as-deposit high Tc superconducting films on (100) SrTiO3 and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) on the film surfaces were performed. Angular yield profile near the film surface for Ba, and the surface peak intensity were measured using 3 MeV He ions. For channeling normal to the substrate a minimum yield of 7%, compared to similar, equals3% for single crystals, was obtained. The results of ion channeling and XPS studies indicate that the as-deposited films have good crystallinity as well as toichiometry to within similar, equals1 nm of the film surface. The in-situ growth of such high Tc and Jc films is an important step in the use of the laser deposition technique to fabricate multilayer structures and the surface perfection is of importance in tunneling devices such as Josephson junctions.

Pyrolysis of thiophene over nickel nanoparticles dispersed on silica is shown to yield Y-junction carbon nanotubes with smaller diameters than those obtained by the pyrolysis of organometallic-thiophene mixtures. In the presence of water vapour, the pyrolysis of organometallic-hydrocarbon mixtures yields single-walled nanotubes, as well as relatively narrow-diameter carbon nanotubes with Y-junctions. Pyrolysis-of organometallic-hydrocarbon mixtures, in the absence of water vapour, only gives nanotubes with T- and Y-junctions.

The conductivity of highly doped polypyrrole is less than that of intermediately doped samples, by two orders of magnitude, at 4.2 K. This may be due to more number of bipolarons in highly doped samples. Bipolarons require four times more activation energy than single polarons to hop by thermally induced virtual transitions to intermediate dissociated polaron states than by the nondissociated process. The conduction process in these polyconjugated systems involve ionization from deep trapped states, having a View the MathML source dependence, hopping from localised states, having View the MathML source dependence, and intersite tunnel percolation, having T−1 dependence. The interplay of these factors leads to a better fit by View the MathML source. The mechanism for this exponential behaviour need not be same as that of Motts variable range hopping. Conduction by percolation is possible, if an infinite cluster of chains can be connected by impurity centers created by dopant ions. The tendency for the saturation of conductivity at very low temperatures is due to the possibility of intersite tunnel percolation is disordered polaronic systems.

After microscopic characterization of the size distributions of gold clusters, deposited on carbon substrates by vacuum evaporation or by soft landing, Au(4f') binding energy of the clusters has been measured as a function of the mean cluster size. Similar measurements have been carried out on Au clusters prepared from sols by chemical means and high-nuclearity cluster compounds. In general, small clusters with a mean diameter of $2 nm show significantly larger binding energies than the bulk metal value, due to the onset of nonmetallicity. Nonmetallicity manifests itself in terms of a tunneling conductance gap only in clusters of diameter ;5 1 nm containing 40 atoms or fewer.

We study the effect that resistive regions have on the conductance of a quantum wire with interacting electrons which is connected to Fermi liquid leads. Using the bosonization formalism and a Rayleigh dissipation function to model the power dissipation, we use both scattering theory and Green's function techniques to derive the DC conductance. The resistive regions are generally found to lead to incoherent transport. For a single wire, we find that the resistance adds in series to the contact resistance of h/e(2) for spinless electrons, and the total resistance is independent of the Luttinger parameter K-W of the wire. We numerically solve the bosonic equations to illustrate what happens when a charge density pulse is incident on the wire; the results depend on the parameters of the resistive and interacting regions in interesting ways. For a junction of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid wires, we use a dissipationless current splitting matrix to model the junction. For a junction of three wires connected to Fermi liquid leads, there are two families of such matrices; we find that the conductance matrix generally depends on K-W for one family but is independent of K-W for the other family, regardless of the resistances present in the system. We have investigated tunneling conductances in disordered, normally conducting perovskite oxides close to the metalinsulator transition. We show that the normal state tunneling conductance of perovskite oxides can be cast in a general form G(V) = G0[1 + curly logical orV/V*curly logical orn] with 1?n?0.5 and where V* is an intrinsic energy scale. The exponent n graduall y increases from 0.5 to 1 as the metal-insulator (M-I) transition is approached. In the high-Tc Bi(2212) cuprates, the normally observed, linear G(V)(n=1) can be made sub-linear (n<1) by substitution of Ca with Y. From the similarity of the linear conductances, we suggest proximity to the M-I transition as a likely cause for this G(V)logical or, bar below V dependence. In systems showing linear conductances (nreverse similar, equals1), we find that ?G/?Vreverse similar, equalsG?0 with ?reverse similar, equals 1 and the intrinsic energy scale V*reverse similar, equals2575 meV in the different oxides investigated.

Intramolecular gamma-hydrogen abstraction reactions were examined in pentane-2-one and 2-methyl-1-pentene in their lowest triplet states using the AM1 semi-empirical molecular orbital method with the complete geometry optimization in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock frame. The results reveal that the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group and the end carbon atom of the olefinic bond acquire high free valence and spin density indices in their respective lowest triplet states, leading to abstraction of hydrogen from the gamma-position relative to the carbonyl and olefinic bonds. The theoretical energy profiles fit with a polynomial and the probability of tunneling of hydrogen was estimated by the WKB (Wentzel, Kramer and Brillouin) method. The results, after thermal averaging of the rate constants, reveal that tunneling of hydrogen is significant at room temperature.

Multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT)/polypyrrole (PPy) fibrils were fabricated by template-free in situ electrochemical deposition of PPy over MWNTs, and characterized by electron microscopy and electrical measurements. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that PPy coating on the surface of nanotube is quite uniform throughout the length, with the possibility of forming unique Y-junctions. Current (I)-voltage (V) characteristics at various temperatures show nonlinearity due to tunneling and hopping contributions to transport across the barriers. AC conductivity measurements (300-4.2 K) show that the onset frequency scales with temperature, and the nanoscale connectivity in MWNT/PPy fibrils decreases with the lowering of temperature. We have investigated the local electronic properties and the spatially resolved magnetoresistance of a nanostructured film of a colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) material by local conductance mapping (LCMAP) using a variable temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) operating in a magnetic field. The nanostructured thin films (thickness ≈500nm) of the CMR material La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) on quartz substrates were prepared using chemical solution deposition (CSD) process. The CSD grown films were imaged by both STM and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Due to the presence of a large number of grain boundaries (GB's), these films show low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) which increases at lower temperatures. The measurement of spatially resolved electronic properties reveal the extent of variation of the density of states (DOS) at and close to the Fermi level (EF) across the grain boundaries and its role in the electrical resistance of the GB. Measurement of the local conductance maps (LCMAP) as a function of magnetic field as well as temperature reveals that the LFMR occurs at the GB. While it was known that LFMR in CMR films originates from the GB, this is the first investigation that maps the local electronic properties at a GB in a magnetic field and traces the origin of LFMR at the GB.

We have investigated the effect of biaxial strain on local electrical/electronic properties in thin films of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 with varying degrees of biaxial strain in them. The local electrical properties were investigated as a function of temperature by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and scanning tunneling potentiometry (STP), along with the bulk probe like conductance fluctuations. The results indicate a positive correlation between the lattice mismatch biaxial strain and the local electrical/electronic inhomogenities observed in the strained sample. This is plausible since the crystal structure of the manganites interfere rather strongly with the magnetic/electronic degrees of freedom. Thus even a small imbalance (biaxial strain) can induce significant changes in the electrical properties of the system.

To investigate the role of grain boundaries and other growth related microstructure in manganite films, a scanning tunneling microscope is used to simultaneously probe surface topography and local potential distribution under current flow at nanometer level in films of epitaxial thin films of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 deposited on single crystal SrTiO3 and NdGaO3 substrate by laser ablation. We have studied two types of films strained and strain relaxed. Thin (50nm) films (strained due to lattice mismatch between substrate and the film) show step growth (unit cell steps) and have very smooth surfaces. Relatively thicker films (strain relaxed, thickness 200nm) do not have these step growths and show rather smooth well connected grains. Charge transport in these films is not uniform on the nanometer level and is accompanied by potential jumps at the internal surfaces. In particular scattering from grain boundaries results in large variations in the local potential resulting in fields as high as 104-105V/cm located near the grain boundaries. We discuss the role of local strain and strain inhomogeneties in determining the current transport in these films and their resistance and magnetoresistivity. In this paper we attempt to correlate between bulk electronic properties with microscopic electronic conduction using scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling potentiometry.
