The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is described. The detector operates at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It was conceived to study proton-proton (and lead-lead) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV (5.5 TeV nucleon-nucleon) and at luminosities up to 10(34)cm(-2)s(-1) (10(27)cm(-2)s(-1)). At the core of the CMS detector sits a high-magnetic-field and large-bore superconducting solenoid surrounding an all-silicon pixel and strip tracker, a lead-tungstate scintillating-crystals electromagnetic calorimeter, and a brass-scintillator sampling hadron calorimeter. The iron yoke of the flux-return is instrumented with four stations of muon detectors covering most of the 4 pi solid angle. Forward sampling calorimeters extend the pseudo-rapidity coverage to high values (vertical bar eta vertical bar <= 5) assuring very good hermeticity. The overall dimensions of the CMS detector are a length of 21.6 m, a diameter of 14.6 m and a total weight of 12500 t.

Visible photoluminescence (PL) was observed for the first time at room temperature in structurally disordered calcium strontium tungstate powder, Ca0.60Sr0.40WO4 (CSW), obtained by the polymeric precursor method. The PL behavior of CSW powders has been analyzed as a function of the disorder rate, based on experimental and theoretical studies. Quantum mechanical theory based on density functional theory at the B3LYP level has been employed to study the electronic structure of two periodic models representing both crystalline and disordered powders. Their electronic structures have been analyzed in terms of density of states, band dispersion and charge densities. The calculations indicate a break in symmetry when passing from crystalline to disordered models, creating localized electronic levels above the valence band. Moreover, a negative charge transfer process takes place from the [WO3] cluster to the [WO4] cluster. The polarization induced by the break in symmetry and the existence of localized levels favors the creation of trapped holes and electrons, originating the PL phenomenon. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The present paper describes the synthesis, characterization, structural refinement and optical absorption behavior of lead tungstate (PbWO(4)) powders obtained by the complex polymerization method heat treated at different temperatures for 2h in air atmosphere. PbWO(4) powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy and ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy measurements. XRD, Rietveld refinement and FT-Raman revealed that PbWO(4) powders are free of secondary phases and crystallizes in a tetragonal structure. The UV-vis absorption spectroscopy measurements suggest the presence of intermediary energy levels into the band gap of structurally disordered powders. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Intense and broad visible photoluminescent (PL) band in structurally disordered SrWO4 compounds was observed at room temperature. The polycrystalline scheelite strontium tungstate (SrWO4) samples prepared by the polymeric precursor method at different temperatures of annealing were structurally characterized by x-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy measurements. Quantum-mechanical calculations showed that the local disorder in the cluster of the network modifiers Sr has a very important role in the charge transfer. The experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement, indicating that the generation of the intense visible PL band can be related to short-range order-disorder degree in the scheelite structure. An intense and broad visible photoluminescence (PL) band was observed at room temperature in structurally disordered PbWO4 thin films. The scheelite lead tungstate (PbWO4) films prepared by the polymeric precursor method and annealed at different temperatures were structurally characterized by means of x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy analysis. Quantum-mechanical calculations showed that the local disorder of the network modifier (Pb) has a very important role in the charge transfer involved in the green PL emission. The experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement, both indicating that the generation of the intense visible PL band is related to simultaneous structural order and disorder in the scheelite PbWO4 lattice.

Luminescent Eu3+-containing polyphosphate tungstate aqueous colloidal systems were prgared and studied as a function of the relative polyphosphate tungstate content. In polyphosphate-rich solutions, Eu-H- ions occupy cagelike sites composed of phosphate groups from the metaphosphate chains. In these sites, an average number of 0.5 water molecule coordinates to an Eu3+ ion and the 500 emission quantum efficiency is 0.22. Tungstatc addition leads to important modifications in neighboring Eu3+ leading to coordination sites in the aqueous medium where metal ions are completely hidden from interactions with solvent molecules. Transmission electron microscopy results clearly show \V-rich nanoparticles with sizes between 5 and 10 nm for all tungstate relative concentrations. For high tungstatc relative contents (above 30 mol %), spectroscopic results suggest the presence of Eu34- in polyoxometalate (P0M)-like sites by comparison with the well-known decatungstoeuropate [EuW10O36](9-) structure. These new aqueous colloids display surprisingly high 5llo emission quantum efficiencies of ca 80% because of the strong ligand field provided by tungstate POM ligands and the complete absence of water molecules from the Eu3+ first coordination shell.

New tungstate-based ceramic pigments, displaying ZnxNi1-xWO4 stoichiometry, were obtained at low temperature using a polymeric precursor method. The powder precursors were milled in an attritor mill in an alcoholic rnedium and heat treated for 12 h. yielding homogeneous and crystalline powder pigments. Characterization (TG/DTA, XRD, IR and colorimetry) showed that mass loss increased with increasing Zn contents. Despite the presence of secondary phases and impurities, the wolframite phase was present in all samples. IR analysis revealed bands related to Me-O and [WO6](6-) group stretching was observed. The intensity of the yellow color of the pigments increased with increasing amount of nickel. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All fights reserved.
