We report on the effective side detection of radiation-mode out-coupling from blazed fiber Bragg gratings (BFBGs) fabricated in single-mode fiber (SMF) and multimode fiber (MMF). The far-field radiation power distribution from BFBGs have been measured achieving a high spatial-spectral resolution (0.17 mm/nm). We have also investigated comparatively the transmission-loss characteristics of BFBGs in both fiber types, fabricated using phase-mask and holographic inscription techniques. Our results reveal clearly that the radiation out-coupling from BFBGs is significantly stronger and spectrally more confined in MMF than in SMF.

The transmission loss in polymer optical fiber (POF) is much higher than that in silica fiber. Very strong absorption bands dominate throughout the visible and near infrared. Optical absorption increases the internal temperature of the polymer fiber and reduces the wavelength of any POF Bragg grating (POFBG) inscribed within the fiber. In this letter, we have investigated the wavelength drift of FBGs inscribed in poly(methyl methacrylate)-based fiber under illumination at different wavelengths. The experiments have shown that the characteristic wavelength of such a POFBG starts decreasing after a light source is applied to it. This decrease continues until equilibrium inside the fiber is established, depending on the surrounding humidity, optical power applied, and operation wavelength.

Graphene Bragg gratings (GBGs) on microfiber are proposed and investigated in this paper. Numerical analysis and simulated results show that the mode distribution, transmission loss, and central wavelength of the GBG are controllable by changing the diameter of the microfiber or the refractive index of graphene. Such type of GBGs with tunability may find important applications in optical fiber communication and sensing as all-fiber in-line devices.

Recently, we have extended fibre grating devices in to mid-IR range. Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) and long-period gratings (LPGs) with spectral responses from near-IR (800nm) to mid-IR ( ∼ 2μm) have been demonstrated with transmission loss as strong as 10-20dB. 2μm FBG and LPG showed temperature and refractive index (RI) sensitivities of ∼ 91pm/°C and 357nm/RIU respectively. Finally, we have performed a bio sensing experiment by monitoring the degradation of foetal bovine serum at room temperature. The results encouragingly show that the mid-IR LPGs can be an ideal biosensor platform as they have high RI sensitivity and can be used to detect concentration change of bio-samples. © 2012 SPIE.

Marine mammals exploit the efficiency of sound propagation in the marine environment for essential activities like communication and navigation. For this reason, passive acoustics has particularly high potential for marine mammal studies, especially those aimed at population management and conservation. Despite the rapid realization of this potential through a growing number of studies, much crucial information remains unknown or poorly understood. This research attempts to address two key knowledge gaps, using the well-studied bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) as a model species, and underwater acoustic recordings collected on four fixed autonomous sensors deployed at multiple locations in Sarasota Bay, Florida, between September 2012 and August 2013. Underwater noise can hinder dolphin communication. The ability of these animals to overcome this obstacle was examined using recorded noise and dolphin whistles. I found that bottlenose dolphins are able to compensate for increased noise in their environment using a wide range of strategies employed in a singular fashion or in various combinations, depending on the frequency content of the noise, noise source, and time of day. These strategies include modifying whistle frequency characteristics, increasing whistle duration, and increasing whistle redundancy. Recordings were also used to evaluate the performance of six recently developed passive acoustic abundance estimation methods, by comparing their results to the true abundance of animals, obtained via a census conducted within the same area and time period. The methods employed were broadly divided into two categories – those involving direct counts of animals, and those involving counts of cues (signature whistles). The animal-based methods were traditional capture-recapture, spatially explicit capture-recapture (SECR), and an approach that blends the “snapshot” method and mark-recapture distance sampling, referred to here as (SMRDS). The cue-based methods were conventional distance sampling (CDS), an acoustic modeling approach involving the use of the passive sonar equation, and SECR. In the latter approach, detection probability was modelled as a function of sound transmission loss, rather than the Euclidean distance typically used. Of these methods, while SMRDS produced the most accurate estimate, SECR demonstrated the greatest potential for broad applicability to other species and locations, with minimal to no auxiliary data, such as distance from sound source to detector(s), which is often difficult to obtain. This was especially true when this method was compared to traditional capture-recapture results, which greatly underestimated abundance, despite attempts to account for major unmodelled heterogeneity. Furthermore, the incorporation of non-Euclidean distance significantly improved model accuracy. The acoustic modelling approach performed similarly to CDS, but both methods also strongly underestimated abundance. In particular, CDS proved to be inefficient. This approach requires at least 3 sensors for localization at a single point. It was also difficult to obtain accurate distances, and the sample size was greatly reduced by the failure to detect some whistles on all three recorders. As a result, this approach is not recommended for marine mammal abundance estimation when few recorders are available, or in high sound attenuation environments with relatively low sample sizes. It is hoped that these results lead to more informed management decisions, and therefore, more effective species conservation.

Complex permittivity of conducting polypyrrole (PPy)-coated Nylon-Lycra textiles ismeasured using a free space transmission measurement technique over the frequency range of1–18 GHz. The aging of microwave dielectric properties and reflection, transmission and absorptionfor a period of 18 months is demonstrated. PPy-coated fabrics are shown to be lossy over thefull frequency range. The levels of absorption are shown to be higher than reflection in the testedsamples. This is attributed to the relatively high resistivity of the PPy-coated fabrics. Both the dopantconcentration and polymerisation time affect the total shielding effectiveness and microwave agingbehaviour. Distinguishing either of these two factors as being exclusively the dominant mechanismof shielding effectiveness is shown to be difficult. It is observed that the PPy-coated Nylon-Lycrasamples with a p-toluene sulfonic acid (pTSA) concentration of 0.015 M and polymerisation times of60 min and 180 min have 37% and 26% decrease in total transmission loss, respectively, upon agingfor 72 weeks at room temperature (20 C, 65% Relative humidity (RH)). The concentration of thedopant also influences the microwave aging behaviour of the PPy-coated fabrics. The samples with ahigher dopant concentration of 0.027 mol/L pTSA are shown to have a transmission loss of 32.6% and16.5% for short and long polymerisation times, respectively, when aged for 72 weeks. The microwaveproperties exhibit better stability with high dopant concentration and/or longer polymerization times.High pTSA dopant concentrations and/or longer polymerisation times result in high microwaveinsertion loss and are more effective in reducing the transmission and also increasing the longevity ofthe electrical properties.

To allocate and size capacitors in a distribution system, an optimization algorithm, called Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO), is employed in this paper. The objective is to minimize the transmission line loss cost plus capacitors cost. During the optimization procedure, the bus voltage, the feeder current and the reactive power flowing back to the source side should be maintained within standard levels. To validate the proposed method, the semi-urban distribution system that is connected to bus 2 of the Roy Billinton Test System (RBTS) is used. This 37-bus distribution system has 22 loads being located in the secondary side of a distribution substation (33/11 kV). Reducing the transmission line loss in a standard system, in which the transmission line loss consists of only about 6.6 percent of total power, the capabilities of the proposed technique are seen to be validated.

This analysis is concerned with the calculation of the elastic wave transmission coefficients and coupling loss factors between an arbitrary number of structural components that are coupled at a point. A general approach to the problem is presented and it is demonstrated that the resulting coupling loss factors satisfy reciprocity. A key aspect of the method is the consideration of cylindrical waves in two-dimensional components, and this builds upon recent results regarding the energetics of diffuse wavefields when expressed in cylindrical coordinates. Specific details of the method are given for beam and thin plate components, and a number of examples are presented. © 2002 Acoustical Society of America.

Molecular beam epitaxy growth of ten-period lattice-matched InAlN/GaN distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) with peak reflectivity centered around 400nm is reported including optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements [1]. Good periodicity heterostructures with crack-free surfaces were confirmed, but, also a significant residual optical absorption below the bandgap was measured. The TEM characterization ascribes the origin of this problem to polymorfism and planar defects in the GaN layers and to the existence of an In-rich layer at the InAlN/GaN interfaces. In this work, several TEM based techniques have been combined.

The first demonstration of a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber suitable for high-rate data transmission at 2µm is presented. Using a custom built Thulium doped fiber amplifier, error-free 8Gbit/s transmission in an optically amplified data channel at 2008nm is reported for the first time.
