The reactivity of [Pt(SbPh3)(3)], a compound of zerovalent platinum, exceptionally stable in air, is described. The compounds [{Pt(SbPh3)(3)}(2)N-2], containing bridging dinitrogen, [{Pt(SbPh3)(3)}(2)C-2], with an ethynediyl group also bridging, and [Pt(CO)(2)(SbPh3)(2)], were all obtained under ordinary pressure of nitrogen, acetylene or carbon monoxide, respectively, and are also described. Among the products of the reactions, the dimer [PtBr3(SbPh3)(2)](2) and the mixed complexes [PtL2(SbPh3)(2)] (L = PPh3, AsPh3) were also obtained. Some of these complexes are luminescent when excited by u.v. radiation.

The productivity of 28 tomato cultivars was evaluated over three stages of harvest. The study was carried out during from June to December of 1999 in an open field at the experimental area of the Section of Olericulture and Aromatic Medicinal Plants, Department of Crop Production at FCAV-UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. The cultivars studied were H 7155, Hypeel, Andino, U 573, H 9036, IPA 6, H 9494, AG 33, Yuba, RPT 1294, AG 72, Pelmeech, Curico, Hypeel 45, RPT 1478, H 9492, H 9498, H 2710, Hitech 45, Halley, Botu 13, H 9553, U 646, NK 1570, AG 45, RPT 1095, RPT 1570, and PSX 37511. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four repetitions, with five plants per plot. Productivity was evaluated at three stages of harvest at 119, 149 and 179 days after seeding. There were no significant differences among the cultivars at the first harvest (119 days). The majority of the cultivars produced their highest yield at the second harvest; the most productive cultivars were Curicó and AG 72, which yielded 4.69 and 4.67 kg/plant, respectively, although they did not differ statistically from the cultivars Hypeel 45 (4.35 kg/plant) and H 9498 (4.16 kg/plant). Yields of the cultivars Andino and H 9494 were evenly distributed between the second and third harvests. At the third harvest, cultivar IPA 6 had the highest yield (2.9 kg/plant) and was statistically different from all other cultivars except H 9036 (2.34 kg). These two cultivars had the most delayed and concentrated maturity, making them suitable for mechanical harvesting, although at a later time. Cultivar AG 72 had the greatest total yield (5.76 kg/plant), but it was not statistically different from cultivars Hypeel 45 (5.43 kg), Curico (4.17 kg), H 9498 (4.83 kg), H 7155 (4.58 kg) and Halley (4.55 kg). All of the cultivars, with the exception of cultivars H 9036, IPA 6, Andino and H 9494 showed in the second harvest concentrated maturity, making it suitable for mechanical harvesting.

In this work we propose a new image inpainting technique that combines texture synthesis, anisotropic diffusion, transport equation and a new sampling mechanism designed to alleviate the computational burden of the inpainting process. Given an image to be inpainted, anisotropic diffusion is initially applied to generate a cartoon image. A block-based inpainting approach is then applied so that to combine the cartoon image and a measure based on transport equation that dictates the priority on which pixels are filled. A sampling region is then defined dynamically so as to hold the propagation of the edges towards image structures while avoiding unnecessary searches during the completion process. Finally, a cartoon-based metric is computed to measure likeness between target and candidate blocks. Experimental results and comparisons against existing techniques attest the good performance and flexibility of our technique when dealing with real and synthetic images. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Poly(lactide) is one of the best candidate to replace conventional petroleum-based polymers, since it is biobased, biocompatible and biodegradable. However, commercial PLA materials typically have low crystallization rate resulting in long processing time and low production efficiency. In this work the effects of two nanofillers MMT30B and MMT30B-g-P(LA-co-CL) on the crystallization rate of neat PLA and PLA/PCL blend were investigated. MMT30B-g-P(LA-co-CL) was synthetized by in situ grafting reaction. The synthesis was carried in xylene at 140°C, upon the results of a screening. The grafted copolymers were evaluated by 1H-NMR ,ATR–IR and TGA. Solvent casted films were obtained by mixing MMT30B-g-P(LA-co-CL) at 5% (w/w) with neat PLA and PLA/PCL blend, comparing the properties with the corresponding blends with and without a 5% of (w/w) unmodified clay. SEM images on PLA based blends shows that MMT30B is aggregated into larger particles compared to MMT30B-g-P(LLA-co-CL). This behavior is correlated to the better exfoliation of MMT30B-g-P(LA-co-CL) clay layers. SEM images on PLA/PCL based blends exhibit the typical sea-island morphology, characteristic of immiscible blends. PLA is the matrix while PCL is finely dispersed in droplets. MMT30B does not reduce PCL droplets size, while MMT30B-g-P(LA-co-CL) reduces the size of PCL droplets. This means that MMT30B-g-P(LA-co-CL) can migrate to the PLA-PCL interface, acting as a compatibilizer. Non-isothermal DSC cooling scans show a fractionated crystallization of the PCL phase in PLA/PCL/MMT30B-g-P(LA-co-CL), confirming the compatibilizer effect of MMT30B-g-P(LA-co-CL). At the same timeMMT30B-g-P(LA-co-CL) can better nucleate the PLA phase, both in neat PLA and PLA/PCL blend, promoting the crystallization during the heating scans. In isothermal condition, both the nanofillers increase the crystallization rate of PLA phase in neat PLA, while in PLA/PCL blends the effect is covered by the nucleating effect of PCL.

Current climate change models predict significant changes in rainfall patterns across Europe. To explore the effect of drought on soil CO2 efflux (FSoil) and on the contribution of litter to FSoil we used rain shelters to simulate a summer drought (May to July 2007) in an intensively managed grassland in Switzerland by reducing annual precipitation by around 30% similar to the hot and dry year 2003 in Central Europe. We added 13C-depleted as well as unlabelled grass/clover litter to quantify the litter-derived CO2 efflux (FLitter). Soil CO2 efflux and the 13C/12C isotope ratio (δ13C) of the respired CO2 after litter addition were measured during the growing season 2007. Drought significantly decreased FSoil in our litter addition experiment by 59% and FLitter by 81% during the drought period itself (May to July), indicating that drought had a stronger effect on the CO2 release from litter than on the belowground-derived CO2 efflux (FBG, i.e. soil organic matter (SOM) and root respiration). Despite large bursts in respired CO2 induced by the rewetting after prolonged drought, drought also reduced FSoil and FLitter during the entire 13C measurement period (April to October) by 26% and 37%, respectively. Overall, our findings show that drought decreased FSoil and altered its seasonality and its sources. Thus, the C balance of temperate grassland soils respond sensitively to changes in precipitation, a factor that needs to be considered in regional models predicting the impact of climate change on ecosystems C balance.
