Systems integration is the origin of most major difficulties found in the engineering design of aeronautical vehicles. The whole design team must assure that each subsystem accomplishes its particular goals and that, together with the rest of the systems, they all meet the general aircraft requirements.Design and building of UAS is a field of actuation to which leading Universities, research Centers and Aeronautical designers have dedicated a lot of effort. In recent years, a team of students, lecturers and professors at the Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica Aeronáutica (EUITA) have been working on the design and building of a UAS for civil observation. The design of multi-mission Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has seen a rapid progress in the last years. A wide variety of designs and applications, some of them really ingenious, have been proposed. The project, which has been going on as a teamwork experience for the last ten years, consists of the design and building of a UAV, and its peculiarity is that it has been carried out entirely by undergraduate students, as part of their Final Research Project. The students face a challenge that includes all the features and stages of an authentic engineering project. We present the current moment of evolution in the process, together with a description of the main difficulties the project has undergone, as a global experience in engineering design and development.

Researchers and managers stress the importance of long-term technology strategies to develop technological capabilities for global competitive advantage. This paper explores the relationship between technology decision-making and strategy in technology transfer (TT) in developing countries, with special reference to South Africa. Earlier research by the authors considered technology and operations integration in developing countries and identified factors that were important to managers in the management of technology. The paper proposes five decision-making levels as the basis of a framework for TT, and investigates the strategic issues pertaining to TT at these levels. Four South African cases studies are used to propose a framework that combines important items in technology transfer and levels of decision-making. The research suggests that technology plays a limited role in strategic decisions in developing countries, and that expectations from new technology are largely operational. Broader implications for managers are identified.

Purpose - The main aim of the research is to shed light on the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in the logistics innovation process of small and medium-sized third party logistics providers (3PLs). Design/methodology/approach - A triangulated research strategy was designed using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The former involved the use of a questionnaire survey of small and medium-sized Italian 3PLs with 153 usable responses received. The latter comprised a series of focus groups and the use of seven case studies. Findings - There is a relatively low level of ICT expenditure with few companies adopting formal technology investment strategies. The findings highlight the strategic importance of supply chain integration for 3PLs with companies that have embarked on an expansion of their service portfolios showing a higher level of both ICT usage and information integration. Lack of technology skills in the workforce is a major constraint on ICT adoption. Given the proliferation of logistics-related ICT tools and applications in recent years it has been difficult for small and medium-sized 3PLs to select appropriate applications. Research limitations/implications - The paper provides practical guidelines to researchers in the effective use of mixed-methods research based on the concept of methodological triangulation. In particular, it shows how questionnaire surveys, focus groups and case study analysis can be used in combination to provide insights into multi-faceted supply chain phenomena. It also identifies several potentially fruitful avenues for future research in this specific field. Practical implications - The paper's findings provide useful guidance for practitioners on the effective adoption of ICT as part of the logistics innovation process. The findings also provide support for ICT vendors in the design of ICT solutions that are aligned to the needs of small 3PLs. Originality/value - There is currently a paucity of research into the drivers and inhibitors of ICT in the innovation processes of small and medium-sized 3PLs. Natural and man-made disasters have gained attention at all levels of policy-making in recent years. Emergency management tasks are inherently complex and unpredictable, and often require coordination among multiple organizations across different levels and locations. Effectively managing various knowledge areas and the organizations involved has become a critical emergency management success factor. However, there is a general lack of understanding about how to describe and assess the complex nature of emergency management tasks and how knowledge integration can help managers improve emergency management task performance. ^ The purpose of this exploratory research was first, to understand how emergency management operations are impacted by tasks that are complex and inter-organizational and second, to investigate how knowledge integration as a particular knowledge management strategy can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the emergency tasks. Three types of specific knowledge were considered: context-specific, technology-specific, and context-and-technology-specific. ^ The research setting was the Miami-Dade Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the study was based on the survey responses from the participants in past EOC activations related to their emergency tasks and knowledge areas. The data included task attributes related to complexity, knowledge area, knowledge integration, specificity of knowledge, and task performance. The data was analyzed using multiple linear regressions and path analyses, to (1) examine the relationships between task complexity, knowledge integration, and performance, (2) the moderating effects of each type of specific knowledge on the relationship between task complexity and performance, and (3) the mediating role of knowledge integration. ^ As per theory-based propositions, the results indicated that overall component complexity and interactive complexity tend to have a negative effect on task performance. But surprisingly, procedural rigidity tended to have a positive effect on performance in emergency management tasks. Also as per our expectation, knowledge integration had a positive relationship with task performance. Interestingly, the moderating effects of each type of specific knowledge on the relationship between task complexity and performance were varied and the extent of mediation of knowledge integration depended on the dimension of task complexity. ^

This mixed-methods study examined effects of a staff development model on instructional practices and dispositions of P-12 teachers. The model design was guided by participants’ varying developmental levels and their values and beliefs about teaching and learning. The study adds to our understanding of the need for teacher-centered professional development.

Higher Education - Border or Boundary? Can Theatre in Education Help Promote a University Education?

With the expansion and increased availability of Higher Education the progression to study for an undergraduate degree has been viewed as a simple stepping stone with examination success a straight - forward border pass. Changes in the funding of degree courses has established a series of more challenging boundaries to entry which demand a rigorous assessment of the benefits of Higher Education. The Widening Participation Unit at The University of Worcester has sought to ease this border crossing for pupils whose parents have not been to university. Their experience from previous projects was that school pupils more easily relate to undergraduate students whose experience of Higher Education is recent and relevant. With this in mind they commissioned the Drama and Performance Department to create a Theatre in Education programme that introduced an awareness of post sixteen options and future choices to challenge Higher Education stereotypes. As a result of this collaboration Why Bother? was created, directed by myself and devised and researched with four students who were studying drama. Their own experiences were used to inform the character development and dealt with worrying as a mature student about integration into full – time education, loss of income after working, the pressures of emotional commitments to partners and being away from home. The programme toured to two thousand year 9 – 11 pupils in Worcestershire and Herefordshire schools in January and May 2011. Devising and touring Why Bother provided students with an opportunity to work as a professional paid TIE team that it is not possible for them to do as part of their undergraduate degree course. My initial research looks at the effectiveness and limitations of this project based on pupil questionnaires and the experiences of the team which are explored within the broader context of TIE and its potential for affecting attitudinal change. This has given rise to a number of questions that need consideration in the development of a new TIE programme aimed at raising the awareness of sixth form students who are about to make the decision whether to apply to university or not. Collaboration with university students in exploring the value of an education that they have subscribed to raises issues of bias and whether their powers of persuasion actually prevent pupils from making their own individual decision. The ethics of promoting a “free” university education seem much less complex than the decision required now which involves balancing the real value against the high financial cost suggested in the working title of Is it Worth it? This paper will present my first attempts to develop research methods and methodologies that will enable me to evaluate the success of this and future TIE.

UNITRACC, Underground Infrastructure Training and Competence Center, ist eine moderne E-Learning-Lösung mit dem Schwerpunkt Leitungsbau und Leitungsinstandhaltung. Die Zielgruppe stellt die gesamte Breite der in diesem Bereich des Tiefbaus tätigen Personenkreise dar: Facharbeiter, Techniker, Ingenieure in Ingenieurbüros und öffentlichen Verwaltungen, Studierende in Universitäten und Fachhochschulen, Teilnehmer in Aus- und Weiterbildungsinstituten sowie Auszubildende in Berufsschulen. Momentan erfolgen Berufsausbildung, Umschulung und Weiterbildung in der Bauindustrie im Rahmen der Präsenzlehre noch in speziell dafür eingerichteten Ausbildungszentren, Berufsförderungswerken und Berufsschulen. Eine der Zielsetzungen von UNITRACC ist die Entwicklung eines komplementären Angebots, das flexibel und individuell einsetzbar ist und im Hinblick auf Zeit und Kosten die Präsenzausbildung optimiert und ergänzt. Die Möglichkeit der Dezentralisierung des Lernens unterstützt die Bildung von neuen Ausbildungswegen und eine Verselbständigung des Lernens, da eine Integration in den aktiven Arbeits- und Entscheidungsprozess realisiert wird. In jeder Phase des Arbeitslebens wird UNITRACC als Informationszentrale für den Praktiker ein Arbeits- und Hilfswerkzeug sein: in der Ausbildung wie im Studium und in der Fortbildung, so auch in der Berufsausübung und als Kommunikationsplattform zwischen Unternehmen, Universitäten, Schulen und Institutionen.(DIPF/Orig.)

Mobile Notebooks, die einen campusweiten Zugriff auf das Hochschulnetzwerk erlauben, eröffnen neue Möglichkeiten der Integration netzbasierter Ressourcen in die reguläre Lehre. Es wird über Entwicklung und gebündelten Einsatz netzbasierter Tools in der psychologischen Grundlagenausbildung berichtet. Spezifische Funktionalitäten mobiler Notebooks wurden in vielfältigen Anwendungen – von Online-Feedback-Instrumenten bis zum virtuellen Experimentallabor – zur Förderung von Lehr-Lern-Prozessen nutzbar gemacht. Sie fördern die individuelle Wissenskonstruktion, indem sie selbstreguliertes und kooperatives Lernen vernetzen, unmittelbares Feedback gewährleisten sowie darüber hinaus die Entwicklung sozialer Bezugsnormen unterstützen. So schaffen sie einen Rahmen, in dem die Studierenden – dem Cognitive Apprenticeship Ansatz folgend – auf ihrem Weg in die wissenschaftliche Community experimentell arbeitender Psychologen von Mitlernenden und Lehrenden unterstützt werden. Innerhalb nur eines Semesters konnten mobile Notebooks und netzbasierte Tools erfolgreich in die reguläre Lehre integriert werden. Die kognitiven und affektiven Grundlagen einer nachhaltigen Verbesserung der Lehr-Lern-Qualität durch den Einsatz derartiger Instrumente werden diskutiert.(DIPF/Orig.)
