A series of rare-earth neodymia supported vanadium oxide catalysts with various V205 loadings ranging from 3 to 15 wt.% were prepared by the wet impregnation method using ammonium metavanadate as the vanadium precursor. The nature of vanadia species formed on the support surface is characterized hy a series of different physicochemical techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). BET surface area, diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy (DR UV-vis), thermal analysis (TG-DTG/DTA) and SEM. The acidity of the prepared systems were verified by the stepwise temperature programmed desorprion of ammonia (NH3-TPD) and found that the total acidity gets increased with the percentage of vanadia loading. XRD and FT1R results shows the presence of surface dispersed vanadyl species at lower loadings and the formation of higher vanadate species as the percentage composition of vanadia is increased above 9 wt.%. The low surface area of the support. calcination temperature and the percentage of vanadia loading are found to influence the formation of higher vanadia species. The catalytic activity of the V205-Nd203 catalysts was probed in the liquid phase hydroxylation of phenol and the result show that the present catalysts are active at lower vanadia concentrations.

Several natural and synthetic supports have been assessed for their efficiency for enzyme immobilization. Synthetic polymer materials are prepared by chemical polymerization using various monomers. As a kind of important carrier, synthetic polymer materials exhibit the advantages of good mechanical rigidity, high specific surface area, inertness to microbial attack, easy to change their surface characteristics, and their potential for bringing specific functional group according to actual needs. Hence, they have been widely investigated and used for enzyme immobilization. When it comes to the natural polymer materials, much attention has been paid to cellulose and other natural polymer materials owing to their wide range of sources, easy modification, nontoxic, and pollution-free, with a possibility of introducing wide variety of functional groups and good biocompatible properties. In this work report the use of synthetic polymer, polypyrrole and its derivatives and natural polymers coconut fiber and sugarcane bagasse as supports for Diastase α- amylase immobilization. An attempt was also made to functionalize both synthetic and natural polymers using Amino-propyl triethoxysilane. Supports and their immobilized forms were characterized via FT-IR, TG, SEM, XRD, BET and EDS techniques. Immobilization parameters were also optimized so as to prepare stable immobilized biocatalyst for starch hydrolysis.

The nitro group is an exceptionally versatile functional group, not only because it is essentially a masked amine, but also because its chemistry can be exploited in a number of useful ways. Asymmetric organocatalysis in particular has capitalized on the use of the nitro group towards the synthesis of a variety of nitrogen- containing targets. Perhaps of greatest interest is that this functional group has been shown to be invaluable within the rapidly expanding field of organocatalytic domino reactions. This review features selected examples of nitro group reactivity in organocatalysis to demonstrate its dynamism and utility.

Flavonoids reduce cardiovascular disease risk through anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulant and anti-platelet actions. One key flavonoid inhibitory mechanism is blocking kinase activity that drives these processes. Flavonoids attenuate activities of kinases including phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K), Fyn, Lyn, Src, Syk, PKC, PIM1/2, ERK, JNK, and PKA. X-ray crystallographic analyses of kinase-flavonoid complexes show that flavonoid ring systems and their hydroxyl substitutions are important structural features for their binding to kinases. A clearer understanding of structural interactions of flavonoids with kinases is necessary to allow construction of more potent and selective counterparts. We examined flavonoid (quercetin, apigenin and catechin) interactions with Src-family kinases (Lyn, Fyn and Hck) applying the Sybyl docking algorithm and GRID. A homology model (Lyn) was used in our analyses to demonstrate that high quality predicted kinase structures are suitable for flavonoid computational studies. Our docking results revealed potential hydrogen bond contacts between flavonoid hydroxyls and kinase catalytic site residues. Identification of plausible contacts indicated that quercetin formed the most energetically stable interactions, apigenin lacked hydroxyl groups necessary for important contacts, and the non-planar structure of catechin could not support predicted hydrogen bonding patterns. GRID analysis using a hydroxyl functional group supported docking results. Based on these findings, we predicted that quercetin would inhibit activities of Src-family kinases with greater potency than apigenin and catechin. We validated this prediction using in vitro kinase assays. We conclude that our study can be used as a basis to construct virtual flavonoid interaction libraries to guide drug discovery using these compounds as molecular templates.

Recent studies involving chitosan interacting with phospholipid monolayers that mimic cell membranes have brought molecular-level evidence for some of the physiological actions of chitosan, as in removing a protein from the membrane. This interaction has been proven to be primarily of electrostatic origin because of the positive charge OF chitosan in low pH solutions, but indirect evidence has also appeared of the presence of hydrophobic interactions. In this study, we provide definitive proof that model membranes are not affected merely by the charges in the amine groups of chitosan. Such a proof was obtained by comparing surface pressure and surface potential isotherms of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline (DPPC) and dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG) monolayers incorporating either chitosan or poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). As the latter is also positively charged and With the same charged Functional group as chitosan, similar effects should be observed in case the electrical charge was the only relevant parameter. Instead, we observed a large expansion in the surface pressure isotherms upon interaction with chitosan, whereas PAH had much smaller effects. Of particular relevance for biological implications, chitosan considerably reduced the monolayer elasticity, whereas PAH had almost no effect. it is clear therefore that chitosan action depends strongly either on its functional uncharged groups and/or on its specific conformation in solution.

This work reports the influence of the poly (ethylene terephthalate) textile surface modification by plasmas of O2 and mixtures (N2 + O2), on their physical and chemical properties. The treatment was carried out in a vacuum chamber. Some parameters remained constant during all treatment, such as: Voltage 470 V; Pressure 1,250 Mbar; Current: 0, 10 A and gas flow: 10 cm3/min. Other parameters, such as working gas composition and treatment time, were modified as the following: to the O2 plasma modified samples only the treatment time was changed (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes). To the plasma with O2 and N2 only the chemical concentrations were changed. Through Capillary tests (vertical) an increase in textile wettability was observed as well as its influence on aging time and its consequence on wettability. The surface functional groups created after plasma treatments were investigated using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The surface topography was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM)

Supported catalysts of CuCl2 on sílica were used in the methane oxychlorination reaction. The materials were synthesized by the ion exchange technique in a basic solution, using a copper-ammonia complex with 3 and 6 % of nominal copper loading. The materials where characterized by thermogravimetry (TG), X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR), Scanning Electron Microscopy with X-ray microanalysis (SEM/EDS), BET specific area and pore distribution. The characterization confirms the presence of copper on the support surface, concluding that the ion exchange technique was adequate in the catalyst synthesis. For the reaction test, an oxychlorination bench scale unit was employed. The tests were carried at 673 and 773 K. The results showed the influence of temperature and catalyst copper content on the oxychlorination of methane reaction

The natural gas (NG) is a clean energy source and found in the underground of porous rocks, associated or not to oil. Its basic composition includes methane, ethane, propane and other components, like carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide and water. H2S is one of the natural pollutants of the natural gas. It is considered critical concerning corrosion. Its presence depends on origin, as well as of the process used in the gas treatment. It can cause problems in the tubing materials and final applications of the NG. The Agência Nacional do Petróleo sets out that the maximum concentration of H2S in the natural gas, originally national or imported, commercialized in Brazil must contain 10 -15 mg/cm3. In the Processing Units of Natural Gas, there are used different methods in the removal of H2S, for instance, adsorption towers filled with activated coal, zeolites and sulfatreat (solid, dry, granular and based on iron oxide). In this work, ion exchange resins were used as adsorbing materials. The resins were characterized by thermo gravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy and sweeping electronic microscopy. The adsorption tests were performed in a system linked to a gas-powered chromatograph. The present H2S in the exit of this system was monitored by a photometrical detector of pulsing flame. The electronic microscopy analyzes showed that the topography and morphology of the resins favor the adsorption process. Some characteristics were found such as, macro behavior, particles of variable sizes, spherical geometries, without the visualization of any pores in the surface. The infrared specters presented the main frequencies of vibration associated to the functional group of the amines and polymeric matrixes. When the resins are compared with sulfatreat, under the same experimental conditions, they showed a similar performance in retention times and adsorption capacities, making them competitive ones for the desulphurization process of the natural gas

Water scarcity is a reality for the inhabitants of the Brazilian semiarid region. The problem, in quantitative terms , is caused due to local climatic conditions due mostly to a water deficit. Qualitatively, results of multiple uses and resulting contamination by human activities. Eutrophication is presented as a threat to the sustainable use of water resources, in order to favor the predominance of dense populations of cyanobacteria, which can be potentially harmful to human health. The aim of this study is to understand the population dynamics of phytoplankton and cyanobacteria to assess water quality of reservoirs Santa Cruz do Apodi and Pau dos Ferros belonging to bacia Apodi Mossoró-RN . Water samples were collected monthly between October 2011 and May 2012 in reservoirs Santa Cruz do Apodi and Pau dos Ferros, in this latter , in Jan/12 we performed a diel profile . The abiotic variables obtained in the field and in the laboratory were: water temperature , dissolved oxygen , pH , turbidity , transparency , total nitrogen and total phosphorus . Phytoplankton samples were collected with a plankton net and bottle of Van dorn . Were performed : identification , quantification , calculation of biovolume , classification into functional groups and index calculation phytoplankton assembly ( Q ) , cyanotoxins were quantified by ELISA . Statistical analyzes supported the evaluation of the dynamics between biotic and abiotic factors. A questionnaire was conducted to examine the conceptions of the population, education professionals and students. The reservoir of Pau dos Ferros, shallow , turbid and eutrophic showed dominance of the functional group SN throughout the sample period . The phytoplankton biomass ranged from 20 to 70 mm ³ . L - 1, the lowest values coincided with the increase of the mixing zone and transparency, which contributed to the occurrence of a change in species composition phytoplankton . The application of the index Q proved relevant, the reservoir of Pau dos Ferros , depending on the species present , was classified ecologically as bad for almost the entire sample period . The reservoir Santa Cruz do Apodi showed low biomass ( 0.04 and 4.31 mm ³ . L - 1 ) and greater diversity in the phytoplankton composition . According to the index assembly (Q ), it showed moderate condition during most of the period influenced by different functional groups of typical meso- eutrophic environment (K S0, H1, C, F , J , E, D and N) . Associations of diatoms and green algae D and X1 succeeded populations of cyanobacteria in periods marked by greater instability in the system , caused by wind or rain. In summary , the occurrence of drought has a direct influence on the hydrological conditions of the reservoirs , in general, these events, reducing the reservoir level is directly related to decreased water quality and increased density of phytoplankton occurring predominance of cyanobacteria , the index Q reflected well to changes in phytoplankton composition , being a good indicator for biomonitoring of reservoirs in this study and survey of previous conceptions showed the need to work on environmental awareness for the preservation of water resources by conducting workshops for Environmental Education

Objectives. To test the hypothesis that multiple firing and silica deposition on the zirconia surface influence the bond strength to porcelain.Materials and methods. Specimens were cut from yttria-stabilized zirconia blocks and sintered. Half of the specimens (group S) were silica coated (physical vapor deposition (PVD)) via reactive magnetron sputtering before porcelain veneering. The remaining specimens (group N) had no treatment before veneering. The contact angle before and after silica deposition was measured. Porcelain was applied on all specimens and submitted to two (N2 and S2) or three firing cycles (N3 and S3). The resulting porcelain-zirconia blocks were sectioned to obtain bar-shaped specimens with 1 mm(2) of cross-sectional area. Specimens were attached to a universal testing machine and tested in tension until fracture. Fractured surfaces were examined using optical microscopy. Data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA, Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05) and Weibull analysis.Results. Specimens submitted to three firing cycles (N3 and S3) showed higher mean bond strength values than specimens fired twice (N2 and S2). Mean contact angle was lower for specimens with silica layer, but it had no effect on bond strength. Most fractures initiated at porcelain-zirconia interface and propagated through the porcelain.Significance. The molecular deposition of silica on the zirconia surface had no influence on bond strength to porcelain, while the number of porcelain firing cycles significantly affected the bond strength of the ceramic system, partially accepting the study hypothesis. Yet, the Weibull modulus values of S groups were significantly greater than the m values of N groups. (C) 2012 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
