We described herein the use of imidazolium ionic liquids [bmim]PF(6) and [bmim]BF(4) in the selective, metal and catalyst-free synthesis of unsymmetrical diaryl selenides by electrophilic substitution in arylboron reagents with arylselenium halides (Cl and Br) at room temperature. This is a general substitution reaction and it was performed with arylboronic acids or potassium aryltrifluoroborates bearing electron-withdrawing or electron-donating groups, affording the corresponding diaryl selenides in good to excellent yields. The ionic liquid [bmim][PF(6)] was easily recovered and utilized for further substitution reactions.

Aims. The aims of this study were to assess the internal reliability (internal consistency), construct validity, sensitivity and ceiling and floor effects of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Impact of Event Scale (IES). Design. Methodological research design. Method. The Brazilian-Portuguese version of the IES was applied to a group of 91 burned patients at three times: the first week after the burn injury (time one), between the fourth and the sixth months (time two) and between the ninth and the 12th months (time three). The internal consistency, construct validity (convergent and dimensionality), sensitivity and ceiling and floor effects were tested. Results. Cronbach`s alpha coefficients showed high internal consistency for the total scale (0 center dot 87) and for the domains intrusive thoughts (0 center dot 87) and avoidance responses (0 center dot 76). During the hospitalisation (time one), the scale showed low and positive correlations with pain measures immediately before (r = 0 center dot 22; p < 0 center dot 05) and immediately after baths and dressings (r = 0 center dot 21; p < 0 center dot 05). After the discharge, we found strong and negative correlations with self-esteem (r = -0 center dot 52; p < 0 center dot 01), strong and positive with depression (r = 0 center dot 63; p < 0 center dot 01) and low and negative with the Bodily pain (r = -0 center dot 24; p < 0 center dot 05), Social functioning (r = -0 center dot 34; p < 0 center dot 01) and Mental health (r = -0 center dot 27; p < 0 center dot 05) domains of the SF-36 at time two. Regarding the sensitivity, no statistically significant differences were observed between mean scale scores according to burned body surface (p = 0 center dot 21). The floor effect was observed in most of the IES items. Conclusion. The adapted version of the scale showed to be reliable and valid to assess postburn reactions on the impact of the event in the group of patients under analysis. Relevance to clinical practice. The Impact of Event Scale can be used in research and clinical practice to assess nursing interventions aimed at decreasing stress during rehabilitation.

The stereoselective nucleophilic addition of potassium aryl- and alkynyltrifluoroborates to cyclic N-acyliminium ion derivatives from N-benzyl-3,4,5-triacetoxy-2-pyrrolidinone, affording the respective 5-substituted 2-pyrrolidinone is described. O licor é uma bebida obtida a partir da mistura de álcool, água, açúcar e compostos aromáticos que podem ser extraídos de ervas, frutas, chocolates entre outros, dando origem a vários tipos e sabores de bebida. A banana é uma fruta perecível, que é produzida durante o ano todo e destaca-se no setor do agronegócio capixaba, sendo, portanto, uma boa alternativa para produção de licor, de cor e sabor bem característicos. O aroma é formado por uma mistura complexa de substâncias e que desempenha papel importante na aceitação do licor. Sua caracterização é feita por técnicas cromatográficas avançadas, como o emprego de GC/MS, e constitui um procedimento indispensável para o desenvolvimento da bebida em destaque. Este estudo teve como objetivo principal analisar o processo de extração dos compostos da banana durante a etapa de infusão para a produção de licor de banana e caracterização química de voláteis do extrato. Foram testadas cinco formulações: 200 g, 400 g, 600 g, 800 g e 1000 g de banana para 1 L de álcool de cereais com graduação alcoólica de 92,8 °GL, para obtenção do extrato hidroalcoólico de banana. Na etapa de extração foram realizadas análises físico-químicas de cor, °Brix, índice de refração, pH e atividade de água. Essas análises permitem determinar a cinética de extração dos compostos, bem como o tempo necessário para sua estabilização. A partir dos extratos, foram produzidos licores misturando-se água, extrato e xarope de açúcar, em proporções para que o licor tivesse 30% (m.v-1) de açúcares adicionados e 18 °GL, e foram realizadas análises físico-químicas no licor recém-preparado e após 60 dias de armazenamento. A análise dos compostos voláteis foi realizada no extrato hidroalcoólico após 21 dias do tratamento 2 (400 g.L-1), tendo a extração desses compostos ocorrido por meio do SPME e injetado no GC/MS. Foi observado que a cinética de extração variou para cada concentração e com o tipo de composto extraído. O tratamento 2 foi o que possuiu melhores características comparado aos demais, pois nessa concentração foi percebida a estabilização da coordenada de cor b* e não foi observado aglomeração de banana. O tempo de estabilização foi de 11 dias e a coordenada de cor b* foi o parâmetro utilizado para determinar o final da extração. Houve variações nos valores das análises físico-químicas entre o tempo 0 e após 60 dias, que podem ter ocorrido devido a reações no processo de maturação. Não foram detectados compostos voláteis de interesse, necessitando de adaptação da metodologia utilizada para avaliação de aroma de extrato hidroalcoólico de banana.

Devido ao seu alto valor nutricional é fundamental para a amamentação de crianças e animais em crescimento, pois fornece componentes fundamentais para o desenvolvimento e manutenção da saúde. Os antimicrobianos são amplamente utilizados como uma medida terapêutica no tratamento de infeções bacterianas, profilaxia e como promotores de crescimento (aditivos). A presença de resíduos de antimicrobianos no leite pode representar riscos para a saúde humana, como reações alérgicas em indivíduos hipersensíveis e resistências. Os objetivos deste estudo são o desenvolvimento de novos métodos de limpeza e de pré-concentração para amostras de leite, por meio de extração em fase sólida (SPE), com a finalidade de realizar uma melhor identificação e quantificação de antimicrobiana por Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Performance (HPLC). Todos os métodos desenvolvidos são de fácil execução, com taxas de recuperação dos agentes antimicrobianos viáveis, com uma percentagem de recuperação a partir de 85%. O método cromatográfico utilizado para a deteção e quantificação (HPLC-DAD) têm os limites de deteção (LD) entre 2.43ng / mL e 1.62ng / mL e os limites de quantificação (LQ) entre 7,36 ng / mL e 4.92 ng / mL, o que significa este método vai de encontro às diretrizes estipuladas pela União Europeia para os agentes antimicrobianos estudados. A combinação dos métodos propostos de limpeza e pré-concentração por SPE e multirresíduo por HPLC-DAD permite, por conseguinte, a deteção e quantificação de resíduos de antibióticos no leite, tornando esta uma alternativa importante e útil no processo de controlo de qualidade para a indústria de alimentos e outras área.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nutrition therapy is a cornerstone of burn care from the early resuscitation phase until the end of rehabilitation. While several aspects of nutrition therapy are similar in major burns and other critical care conditions, the patho-physiology of burn injury with its major endocrine, inflammatory, metabolic and immune alterations requires some specific nutritional interventions. The present text developed by the French speaking societies, is updated to provide evidenced-based recommendations for clinical practice. METHODS: A group of burn specialists used the GRADE methodology (Grade of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) to evaluate human burn clinical trials between 1979 and 2011. The resulting recommendations, strong suggestions or suggestions were then rated by the non-burn specialized experts according to their agreement (strong, moderate or weak). RESULTS: Eight major recommendations were made. Strong recommendations were made regarding, 1) early enteral feeding, 2) the elevated protein requirements (1.5-2 g/kg in adults, 3 g/kg in children), 3) the limitation of glucose delivery to a maximum of 55% of energy and 5 mg/kg/h associated with moderate blood glucose (target ≤ 8 mmol/l) control by means of continuous infusion, 4) to associated trace element and vitamin substitution early on, and 5) to use non-nutritional strategies to attenuate hypermetabolism by pharmacological (propranolol, oxandrolone) and physical tools (early surgery and thermo-neutral room) during the first weeks after injury. Suggestion were made in absence of indirect calorimetry, to use of the Toronto equation (Schoffield in children) for energy requirement determination (risk of overfeeding), and to maintain fat administration ≤ 30% of total energy delivery. CONCLUSION: The nutritional therapy in major burns has evidence-based specificities that contribute to improve clinical outcome.

Starting from a recent model of the η′N interaction, we evaluate the η ′-nucleus optical potential, including the contribution of lowest order in density, tρ/2mη′, together with the second-order terms accounting for η′ absorption by two nucleons. We also calculate the formation cross section of the η′bound states from (π, p) reactions on nuclei. The η′-nucleus potential suffers from uncertainties tied to the poorly known η′N interaction, which can be partially constrained by the experimental modulus of the η′N scattering length and/or the recently measured transparency ratios in η′nuclear photoproduction. Assuming an attractive interaction and taking the claimed experimental value |aη′N|= 0.1 fm, we obtain an η′optical potential in nuclear matter at saturation density of Vη′=−(8.7 + 1.8i) MeV, not attractive enough to produce η′bound states in light nuclei. Larger values of the scattering length give rise to deeper optical potentials, with moderate enough imaginary parts. For a value |aη′N|= 0.3 fm, which can still be considered to lie within the uncertainties of the experimental constraints, the spectra of light and medium nuclei show clear structures associated to η′-nuclear bound states and to threshold enhancements in the unbound region.

ABSTRACT Intrinsic equilibrium constants for 22 representative Brazilian Oxisols were estimated from a cadmium adsorption experiment. Equilibrium constants were fitted to two surface complexation models: diffuse layer and constant capacitance. Intrinsic equilibrium constants were optimized by FITEQL and by hand calculation using Visual MINTEQ in sweep mode, and Excel spreadsheets. Data from both models were incorporated into Visual MINTEQ. Constants estimated by FITEQL and incorporated in Visual MINTEQ software failed to predict observed data accurately. However, FITEQL raw output data rendered good results when predicted values were directly compared with observed values, instead of incorporating the estimated constants into Visual MINTEQ. Intrinsic equilibrium constants optimized by hand calculation and incorporated in Visual MINTEQ reliably predicted Cd adsorption reactions on soil surfaces under changing environmental conditions.

Due to their numerous novel technological applications ranging from the example of exhaust catalysts in the automotive industry to the catalytic production of hydro- gen, surface reactions on transition metal substrates have become to be one of the most essential subjects within the surface science community. Although numerous applications exist, there are many details in the different processes that, after many decades of research, remain unknown. There are perhaps as many applications for the corrosion resistant materials such as stainless steels. A thorough knowledge of the details of the simplest reactions occuring on the surfaces, such as oxidation, play a key role in the design of better catalysts, or corrosion resistant materials in the future. This thesis examines the oxidation of metal surfaces from a computational point of view mostly concentrating on copper as a model material. Oxidation is studied from the initial oxidation to the oxygen precovered surface. Important parameters for the initial sticking and dissociation are obtained. The saturation layer is thoroughly studied and the calculated results arecompared with available experimental results. On the saturated surface, some open questions still remain. The present calculations demonstrate, that the saturated part of the surface is excluded from being chemically reactive towards the oxygen molecules. The results suggest, that the reason for the chemical activity of the saturated surface is due to a strain effect occuring between the saturated areas of the surface.

INTRODUCTION: Tropheryma whipplei infection should be considered in patients with suspected infective endocarditis with negative blood cultures. The case (i) shows how previous symptoms can contribute to the diagnosis of this illness, and (ii) elucidates current recommended diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to Whipple's disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old Swiss man with a past history of 2 years of diffuse arthralgia was admitted for a possible endocarditis with severe aortic and mitral regurgitation. Serial blood cultures were negative. Our patient underwent replacement of his aortic and mitral valve by biological prostheses. T. whipplei was documented by polymerase chain reactions on both removed valves and on stools, as well as by valve histology. A combination of hydroxychloroquine and doxycycline was initiated as lifetime treatment followed by the complete disappearance of his arthralgia. CONCLUSIONS: This case report underlines the importance of considering T. whipplei as a possible causal etiology of blood culture-negative endocarditis. Lifelong antibiotic treatment should be considered for this pathogen (i) due to the significant rate of relapses, and (ii) to the risk of reinfection with another strain since these patients likely have some genetic predisposition.

Studies of the kinetics of electrocatalytic reactions on well oriented single crystal surfaces have demonstrated the influence of surface structure on the rate and mechanisms of many electrochemical processes. The preparation and characterization of these surfaces is the first step in this type of studies. In this paper, a methodology employed in order to ensure the quality and cleanliness of single crystals and their utilization as rotating electrodes is described.

This paper discusses different aspects related to the application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in the study of heterogeneous electrochemical reactions occurring on Dimensionally Stable anodes (DSA®). The most relevant aspects of the semiconductor/electrolyte interface, the application of the EIS classical equivalent circuit approach and the ac porous model in DSA are presented. The paper shows that DSA type electrodes can be consistently investigated by using the ac porous model and an analysis is presented showing the advantage of applying this kind of approach to study heterogeneous reactions on DSA electrodes. Furthermore, some preliminary results on Ti/Ru0,3Ti(0,7-x)Sn x O2 based electrodes are presented to exemplify the use of the ac porous model analysis.

The aim of the present work is to investigate the effects of blending and chemical interesterification reactions on the softening and melting behavior of chicken fat, its stearin and medium chain triacylglycerols, and blends thereof in various ratios. Chemical interesterification is a promising alternative to the current processes of modifying the physical properties of fats. In the experimental design 7 samples corresponding to 7 different blend proportions were used. The results were represented in triangular diagrams. The addition of stearin influenced the softening and melting points. The mixture response surface methodology proved to be an extremely useful tool for the optimization of the fat mixtures.
