The influences of HCl, HNO3 and HF treatments of carbon on N2O and NO reduction with 20 wt% Cu-loaded activated carbon were studied. The order of activity in both N2O and NO is as follows: Cu20/AC-HNO3>Cu20/AC>Cu20/AC-HF>Cu20/AC-HCl. The same sequence was also observed for the amount of CO2 evolved during TPD experiments of supports acid for the catalyst dispersion. On the other hand, N2O exhibited a higher reaction rate than NO and a higher sensitivity to acid treatments, and the presence of gas-phase O-2 had opposite effects in N2O and NO reduction. The key role of carbon surface chemistry is examined to rationalize these findings and the relevant mechanistic and practical implications are discussed. The effects of oxygen surface groups on the pore structure of supports and catalysts are also analyzed, (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The oxovanadium(IV) complexes [VO(acac)(2)(Hpz)].HC(pz)(3) 1.HC(pz)(3) (acac= acetylacetonate, Hpz = pyrazole, pz = pyrazoly1) and [VOCl2{HOCH2C(pz)(3)}] 2 were obtained from reaction of [VO(acac)(2)] with hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)methane or of VCl(3)with 2,2,2-tris(1-pyrazolyl)ethanol. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, Far-IR and EPR spectroscopies, FAB or ESI mass-spectrometry and, for 1, by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. 1 and 2 exhibit catalytic activity for the oxidation of cyclohexane to the cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone mixture in homogeneous system (TONS up to 1100) under mild conditions (NCMe, 24h, room temperature) using benzoyl peroxide (BPO), tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (mCPBA), hydrogen peroxide or the urea-hydrogen peroxide adduct (UHP) as oxidants. 1 and 2 were also immobilized on a polydimethylsiloxane membrane (1-PDMS or 2-PDMS) and the systems acted as supported catalysts for the cyclohexane oxidation using the above oxidants (TONs up to 620). The best results were obtained with mCPBA or BP0 as oxidant. The effects of various parameters, such as the amount of catalyst, nitric acid, reaction time, type of oxidant and oxidant-to-catalyst molar ratio, were investigated, for both homogeneous and supported systems. In this work, we report the Biginelli-type reaction between various aldehydes, acetophenones and urea systems in the presence of sulfonic acid functionalized silica (SBA-Pr-SO3H) under solvent-free conditions, which led to 4,6-diarylpyrimidin-2(1H)-ones derivatives. SBA-Pr-SO3H with a pore size of 6 nm was found to be an efficient heterogeneous solid acid catalyst for this reaction which led to high product yields, was environmentally benign with short reaction times and easy handling.

Dessutom deaktiveras nickelkatalysatorn snabbt p.g.a. att nickeltvålar bildas i reaktionsblandningen. Därför inkluderades teknologiska aspekter kraftigt i forskningen.

Adsorbents functionalized with chelating agents are effective in removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Important properties of such adsorbents are high binding affinity as well as regenerability. In this study, aminopolycarboxylic acid, EDTA and DTPA, were immobilized on the surface of silica gel, chitosan, and their hybrid materials to achieve chelating adsorbents for heavy metals such as Co(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II). New knowledge about the adsorption properties of EDTA- and DTPA-functionalizedadsorbents was obtained. Experimental work showed the effectiveness, regenerability, and stability of the studied adsorbents. Both advantages and disadvantages of the adsorbents were evaluated. For example, the EDTA-functionalized chitosan-silica hybrid materials combined the benefits of the silica gel and chitosan while at the same time diminishing their observed drawbacks. Modeling of adsorption kinetics and isotherms is an important step in design process. Therefore, several kinetic and isotherm models were introduced and applied in this work. Important aspects such as effect of error function, data range, initial guess values, and linearization were discussed and investigated. The selection of the most suitable model was conducted by comparing the experimental and simulated data as well as evaluating the correspondence between the theory behind the model and properties of the adsorbent. In addition, modeling of two-component data was conducted using various extended isotherms. Modeling results for both one- and twocomponent systems supported each other. Finally, application testing of EDTA- and DTPA-functionalized adsorbents was conducted. The most important result was the applicability of DTPA-functionalized silica gel and chitosan in the capturing of Co(II) from its aqueous EDTA-chelate. Moreover, these adsorbents were efficient in various solution matrices. In addition, separation of Ni(II) from Co(II) and Ni(II) and Pb(II) from Co(II) and Cd(II) was observed in two- and multimetal systems. Lastly, prior to their analysis, EDTA- and DTPA-functionalized silica gels were successfully used to preconcentrate metal ions from both pure and salty waters

Rice husk silica was utilized as the promoter of ceria for preparing supported vanadia catalysts. Effect of vanadium content was investigated with 2–10 wt.% V2O5 loading over the support. Structural characterization of the catalysts was done by various techniques like energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area, thermal analysis (TGA/DTA), FT-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV–vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DR UV–vis), electron paramagnetic spectroscopy (EPR) and solid state magnetic resonance spectroscopies (29Si and 51V MASNMR). Catalytic activity was studied towards liquid-phase oxidation of benzene. Surface area of ceria enhanced upon rice husk silica promotion, thus makes dispersion of the active sites of vanadia easier. Highly dispersed vanadia was found for low V2O5 loading and formation of cerium orthovanadate (CeVO4) occurs as the loading increases. Spectroscopic investigation clearly confirms the formation of CeVO4 phase at higher loadings of V2O5. The oxidation activity increases with vanadia loading up to 8 wt.% V2O5, and further increase reduces the conversion rate. Selective formation of phenol can be attributed to the presence of highly dispersed active sites of vanadia over the support.

Synthesis of well-defined nanoparticles has been intensively pursued not only for their fundamental scientific interest, but also for many technological applications. One important development of the nanomaterial is in the area of chemical catalysis. We have now developed a new aqueous-based method for the synthesis of silica encapsulated noble metal nanoparticles in controlled dimensions. Thus, colloid stable silica encapsulated similar to 5 nm platinum nanoparticle is synthesized by a multi-step method. The thickness of the silica coating could be controlled using a different amount of silica precursor. These particles supported on a high surface area alumina are also demonstrated to display a superior hydrogenation activity and stability against metal sintering after thermal activation.

New lanthanide complexes of 3-hydroxypicolinic acid (HpicOH) were prepared: [Ln(H2O)(picOH)(2)(mu-HpicO)].3H(2)O (Ln = Eu, Tb, Er). The complexes were characterized using photoluminescence, infrared, Raman, and H-1 NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The crystal structure of [Eu(H2O)(picOH)(2)(mu-HpicO)] . 3H(2)O 1 was determined by X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 crystallizes in a monoclinic system with space group P2(1)/c and cell parameters a = 9.105(13) Angstrom, b = 18.796(25) Angstrom, and c = 13.531(17) Angstrom, and beta = 104.86(1) deg. The 3-hydroxypicolinate ligands coordinate through both N,O- or O,O- chelation to the lanthanide ions, as shown by X-ray and spectroscopic results. Photoluminescence measurements were performed for the Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes; the Eu(III) complex was investigated in more detail. The Eu(III) compound is highly luminescent and acts as a photoactive center in nanocomposite materials whose host matrixes are silica nanoparticles.

Ordered mesoporous silica with cubic structure, type FDU-1, was synthesized under strong acid media using B-50-6600 poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(butilene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer (EO(39)BO(47)EO(39)) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Humic acid (HA) was modified to the synthesis process at a concentration of 1.5 mmol per gram of SiO(2). Thermogravimetry, small angle X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption and high resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the samples. The pristine FDU-1 and FDU-1 with incorporated 1.5 mmol of HA were tested for adsorption of Pb(2+), Cu(2+) and Cd(2+) in aqueous solution. Incorporation of humic acid into the FDU-1 silica afforded an adsorbent with strong affinity for Cd(2+), Cu(2+) and Pb(2+) from single ion solutions. Adsorption of Cu(2+) was significantly enhanced after incorporation of humic acid, a fact that can be explained by the formation of complexes with carboxylic and phenolic groups at low concentrations of the metal cation. The results demonstrated the potential applicability of FDU-1 with incorporated HA in the removal of low concentrations of heavy metal cations from aqueous solution, such as wastewaters, after usual precipitation of metal hydroxides in alkaline medium and proper pH conditioning in the range between 6 and 7. Ruthenium hydroxide supported on silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles was shown to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the liquid-phase oxidation of a wide range of alcohols using molecular oxygen as a sole oxidant in the absence of co-catalysts or additives. The material was prepared through the loading of the amino modified support with ruthenium(III) ions from an aqueous solution of ruthenium(III) chloride followed by treatment with sodium hydroxide to form ruthenium hydroxide species. Characterizations suggest that ruthenium hydroxide is highly dispersed on the support surface, with no ruthenium containing crystalline phases being detected. Various carbonylic monoterpenoids important for fragrance and pharmaceutical industries can be obtained in good to excellent yields starting from biomass-based monoterpenic alcohols, such as isobomeol, perillyl alcohol, carveol, and citronellol. The catalyst undergoes no metal leaching and can be easily recovered by the application of an external magnet and re-used. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

One of the key objectives in fuel-cell technology is to improve the performance of the anode catalyst for the alcohol oxidation and reduce Pt loading. Here, we show the use of six different electrocatalysts synthesized by the sol -gel method on carbon powder to promote the oxidation of methanol in acid media. The catalysts Pt-PbO(x) and Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x)) with 10% of catalyst load exhibited significantly enhanced catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation reaction as compared to Pt-(RuO(2))/C and Pt/C electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry studies showed that the electrocatalysts Pt-PbO(x)/C and Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x))/C started the oxidation process at extremely low potentials and that they represent a good novelty to oxidize methanol. Furthermore, quasi-stationary polarization experiments and cronoamperometry studies showed the good performance of the Pt-PbO(x), Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x))/C and Pt-(RuO(2)-IrO(2))/C catalysts during the oxidation process. Thus, the addition of metallic Pt and PbO(x) onto high-area carbon powder, by the sol -gel route, constitutes an interesting way to prepare anodes with high catalytic activity for further applications in direct methanol fuel cell systems.

This work reports on the photoluminescent properties of the complex diequatris(thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) europium(III), which was adsorbed or supported on tubes of modified surface silica matrix. The luminescence data and the experimental intensity parameter results evidence the existence of high interactions between the complex [Eu(tta)(3)(H2O)(2)] and the modified surface matrix. The anchored complex on macroporous silica shows higher intensity parameter values suggesting that the Eu-0 bond becomes more covalent than the adsorbed one. Therefore, the hypersensitive character of the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition increases evidencing a high contribution of the dynamic coupling mechanism possibly due to highly polarizable chemical environments occupied by europium(III) ion. The lifetimes of the complex on silica matrices were measured. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this work we have made use of the study of the interaction between Fe(TDCPP)(+) and the axial ligands OH- and imidazole in order to help characterize the heterogenized catalysts Fe(TDCPP)SG and Fe(TDCPP)IPG through UV-VIS and EPR spectroscopies and thus, better understand their different catalytic activity in the oxidation of cyclohexane by PhIO. We have found out that in Fe(TDCPP)SG (containing 1.2 X 10(-6) mol Fe(TDCPP)(+)/g of support), the FeP bis-coordinates to silica gel through Fe-O coordination and it is high-spin (FeP)-P-III species. In Fe(TDCPP)IPG 1 (containing 1.1 X 10(-6) mol Fe(TDCPP)(+) and 2.2 X 10(-4) mol imidazole/g of support), the FeP is bis-ligated to imidazole propyl gel through Fe-imidazole coordination and using NO as a paramagnetic probe, we present evidence that Fe(TDCPP)(+) is present as a mixture of low-spin (FeP)-P-III and (FeP)-P-II species. This catalyst led to a relative low yield of cyclohexanol (25%) because the bis-coordination of the (FeP)-P-III to the support partially blocks the reaction between Fe(TDCPP)(+) and PhIO, thus leading to the formation of only a small amount of the active species Fe-IV(OP+, while the (FeP)-P-II species do not react with the oxygen donor. Increasing the amount of Fe(TDCPP)(+) and decreasing the amount of imidazole in the support led to the obtention of high-spin (FeP)-P-III EPR signals in the spectra of Fe(TDCPP)IPG 5 (containing 4.4 X 10(-6) mol Fe(TDCPP)(+) and 2.2 X 10(-5) mol imidazole/g of IPG), together with low-spin (FeP)-P-III species. This latter catalyst led to better cyclohexanol yields (67%) than Fe(TDCPP)IPG 1. Fe(TDCPP)IPG 5 was further used in a study of the optimization of its catalytic activity and in recycling experiments in the optimized conditions. Recycling oxidation reactions of Fe(TDCPP)IPG 5 led to a total turnover number of 201 and total cyclohexanol yield of 201%, which could not be attained with Fe(TDCPP)Cl in homogeneous solution (turnover = 96) due to the difficulty in recovering and reusing it.
