The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based microelectrode (ME) by modifying CNTs-room temperature ionic liquid (IL) gel at carbon fiber microelectrode (CFME) is easily prepared, which exhibits the typical cyclic voltammogram of ME with sigmoid shape and possesses good stability, high conductivity and enlarged current response and tunable dimension. The direct electron transfer of glucose oxidase has been greatly promoted showing reversible electrochemical behavior even at high scan rate. In addition, the CNTs based ME also exhibits effectively electrocatalytic oxidized ability to biomolecules, e.g. dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA) and dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The obvious separation of oxidized peak potential for DA and AA makes it possible to selectively determine DA in presence of AA. These phenomena show that the CNTs based ME has promising potential to detect various species in vivo and in vitro.

The search for more efficient anode catalyst than platinum to be used in direct alcohol fuel cell systems is an important challenge. In this study, boron-doped diamond film surfaces were modified with Pt, Pt-SnO(2) and Pt-Ta(2)O(5) nano-crystalline deposits by the sol-gel method to study the methanol and ethanol electro-oxidation reactions in acidic medium. Electrochemical experiments carried out in steady-state conditions demonstrate that the addition of SnO(2) to Pt produces a very reactive electrocatalyst that possibly adsorbs and/or dissociate ethanol more efficiently than pure Pt changing the onset potential of the reaction by 190 mV toward less positive potentials. Furthermore, the addition of Ta(2)O(5) to Pt enhances the catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation resulting in a negative shift of the onset potential of 170 mV. These synergic effects indicate that the addition of these co-catalysts inhibits the poisoning effect caused by strongly adsorbed intermediary species. Since the SnO(2) catalyst was more efficient for ethanol oxidation, it could probably facilitate the cleavage of the C-C bond of the adsorbed intermediate fragments of the reaction. The immobilization of the ruthenium moiety Ru(NH3)4SO3 by reaction of trans-[Ru(NH3)4SO2(H2O)]2+ with silica gel functionalized with 3-(1-imidazolyl)propyl groups is reported. A 60% surface coverage was obtained in the proportion of the resulting material [=Si(CH2)3imN-Ru(NH3)4SO3]. The anchored Ru(II) complex was characterized and its reactivity investigated. Derivatives of CO, pyrazine, and isonicotinamide have been prepared and characterized by electronic and vibrational spectroscopies, as well as by chemical means. The [=Si(CH2)3imN-Ru(NH3)4SO4]Cl, obtained through oxidation of the corresponding ruthenium(II) sulfite species, has been characterized and the aquo and the oxalate derivative have been synthesized.

In this work we have made use of the study of the interaction between Fe(TDCPP)(+) and the axial ligands OH- and imidazole in order to help characterize the heterogenized catalysts Fe(TDCPP)SG and Fe(TDCPP)IPG through UV-VIS and EPR spectroscopies and thus, better understand their different catalytic activity in the oxidation of cyclohexane by PhIO. We have found out that in Fe(TDCPP)SG (containing 1.2 X 10(-6) mol Fe(TDCPP)(+)/g of support), the FeP bis-coordinates to silica gel through Fe-O coordination and it is high-spin (FeP)-P-III species. In Fe(TDCPP)IPG 1 (containing 1.1 X 10(-6) mol Fe(TDCPP)(+) and 2.2 X 10(-4) mol imidazole/g of support), the FeP is bis-ligated to imidazole propyl gel through Fe-imidazole coordination and using NO as a paramagnetic probe, we present evidence that Fe(TDCPP)(+) is present as a mixture of low-spin (FeP)-P-III and (FeP)-P-II species. This catalyst led to a relative low yield of cyclohexanol (25%) because the bis-coordination of the (FeP)-P-III to the support partially blocks the reaction between Fe(TDCPP)(+) and PhIO, thus leading to the formation of only a small amount of the active species Fe-IV(OP+, while the (FeP)-P-II species do not react with the oxygen donor. Increasing the amount of Fe(TDCPP)(+) and decreasing the amount of imidazole in the support led to the obtention of high-spin (FeP)-P-III EPR signals in the spectra of Fe(TDCPP)IPG 5 (containing 4.4 X 10(-6) mol Fe(TDCPP)(+) and 2.2 X 10(-5) mol imidazole/g of IPG), together with low-spin (FeP)-P-III species. This latter catalyst led to better cyclohexanol yields (67%) than Fe(TDCPP)IPG 1. Fe(TDCPP)IPG 5 was further used in a study of the optimization of its catalytic activity and in recycling experiments in the optimized conditions. Recycling oxidation reactions of Fe(TDCPP)IPG 5 led to a total turnover number of 201 and total cyclohexanol yield of 201%, which could not be attained with Fe(TDCPP)Cl in homogeneous solution (turnover = 96) due to the difficulty in recovering and reusing it.

Mullite whiskers and anisotropic grains that were derived from erbia-doped aluminum hydroxide-silica gel were studied. Firing 3.0-mol%-erbia-doped isostatically pressed pellets at 1600 degrees C for 1.0-8.0 h resulted in a high surface concentration of mullite whiskers. Their c-axes were aligned preferentially along the pellet surface; the maximum length was 50 mu m, and the maximum aspect ratio was 23. The pellet surface was fully covered by mullite whiskers, and small anisotropic grains with a low aspect ratio were observed in the bulk. The voids that were observed in the fracture surfaces were covered fully by mullite whiskers. The large number of voids resulted in an apparent density of 1.60 g/cm(3) in the sintered pellets. The molar ratio of alumina to silica in the whiskers was in the range of 1.30-1.45 tan average value of 1.31), regardless of whether the alumina/silica powder compositions were mixed in a 3:2 or 2:1 ratio.

The objective of this research was the preparation of a silica gel functionalized successively with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (SG-PrCl) and thiourea (SG-Pr-THIO), and its application in adsorption and catalysis. The materials were characterized by 13C and 29Si NMR, FTIR, scanning electron micrographs (SEM), analysis of nitrogen and elemental analysis. Aiming at its application in adsorption, the [3-(thiourea)-propyl] silica gel (SG-Pr-THIO) was tested as an adsorbent for transition-metal ions using a batchwise process. The organofunctionalized surface showed the ability to adsorb the metal ions Cd(ii), Cu(ii), Ni(ii), Pb(ii) and Co(ii) from water, ethanol and acetone. The adsorption isotherms were fitted by Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models. The kinetics of adsorption of metals were performed using three models such as pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and Elovich. The Langmuir and pseudo-first order models were the most appropriate to describe the adsorption and kinetic data, respectively. With the purpose of application in catalysis, the SG-Pr-THIO was reacted with a Mo(ii) organometallic complex, forming the new material SG-Pr-THIO-Mo. Only a few works in the literature have reported this type of reaction, and none dealt with thiourea and Mo(ii) complexes. The new Mo-silica gel organometallic material was tested as catalyst in the epoxidation of cyclooctene and styrene. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.

The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that whole living hyphal of marine fungi Aspergillus sclerotiorum CBMAI 849 and Penicillium citrinum CBMAI 1186 were immobilized on support matrices of silica gel, silica xerogel and/or chitosan. P. citrinum immobilized on chitosan catalyzed the quantitative reduction of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-ethanone (1) to the enantiomer (S)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-ethanol (3b), with excellent enantioselectivity (ee > 99%, yield = 95%). Interestingly, ketone 1 was reduced with moderate selectivity and conversion to alcohol 3b (ee = 69%, c 40%) by the free mycelium of P. citrinum. This free mycelium of P. citrinum catalyzed the production of the (R)-alcohol 3a, the antipode of the alcohol produced by the immobilized cells. P. citrinum immobilized on chitosan also catalyzed the bioreduction of 2-chloro-1-phenylethanone (2) to 2-chloro-1-phenylethanol (4a,b), but in this case without optical selectivity. These results showed that biocatalytic reduction of ketones by immobilization hyphal of marine fungi depends on the xenobiotic substrate and the support matrix used. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Purpose: To evaluate the dosimetric characteristics of a new formulation of MAGIC gel, called MAGIC-f, which contains the addition of 3.3% formaldehyde, resulting in a gel with increased thermal stability. Methods: MAGIC-f gel was prepared and stored in hermetically sealed plastic containers. After irradiation, magnetic resonance images (MRI) were acquired to evaluate dose and dose distribution. Dosimetric characterization was performed by means of depth dose measurements, dose response sensitivity and linearity, temporal stability, energy and dose rate dependence, dose integration using sequential beams, temperature influence during MRI acquisition and dose distribution integrity. Results: MAGIC-f depth dose measurements are compatible with the dosimetric table data within +/- 4% uncertainty. The dosimeter's R-2 response varies linearly with dose at least from 0 to 6 Gy. The time-course of the sensitivity of the dosimeter following irradiation, indicated stabilization after 2 weeks. The dosimeter's response to irradiation was altered by 6% when increasing the energy from cobalt beams to 10 MV beams. The dose rate dependence of this new formulation of gel dosimeter is small: less than 2.5% for a variation from 200 to 500 cGy/min, and the dependence with the fractionation scheme is about 50% smaller than for standard MAGIC gel, The dependence on scanning temperature was also verified, and the integrity of the dose distribution was confirmed for a period of 90 days. Conclusions: The results demonstrate the applicability of this new dosimeter in tridimensional dose distribution measurements. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The aim of this study was to evaluate in humans the amount of new bone after sinus floor elevation with a synthetic bone substitute material consisting of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite embedded in a highly porous silica gel matrix. The lateral approach was applied in eight patients requiring sinus floor elevation to place dental implants. After elevation of the sinus membrane, the cavities were filled with 0.6-mm granules of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite mixed with the patient's blood. A collagen membrane (group 1) or a platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane (group 2) was placed over the bony window. After healing periods between 7 and 11 months (in one case after 24 months), 16 biopsy specimens were harvested with a trephine bur during implant bed preparation. The percentage of new bone, residual filler material, and soft tissue was determined histomorphometrically. Four specimens were excluded from the analysis because of incomplete biopsy removal. In all other specimens, new bone was observed in the augmented region. For group 1, the amount of new bone, residual graft material, and soft tissue was 28.7% ± 5.4%, 25.5% ± 7.6%, and 45.8% ± 3.2%, respectively. For group 2, the values were 28.6% ± 6.90%, 25.7% ± 8.8%, and 45.7% ± 9.3%, respectively. All differences between groups 1 and 2 were not statistically significant. The lowest and highest values of new bone were 21.2% and 34.1% for group 1 and 17.4% and 37.8% for group 2, respectively. The amount of new bone after the use of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite for sinus floor elevation in humans is comparable to values found in the literature for other synthetic or xenogeneic bone substitute materials. There was no additional beneficial effect of the PRF membrane over the non-cross-linked collagen membrane.

Silica-gel supported binam-derived prolinamides are efficient organocatalysts for the direct intramolecular and intermolecular aldol reaction under solvent-free conditions using conventional magnetic stirring. These organocatalysts in combination with benzoic acid showed similar results to those obtained under similar homogeneous reaction conditions using an organocatalyst of related structure. For the intermolecular process, the aldol products were obtained at room temperature and using only 2 equiv of the ketone with high yields, regio-, diastereo- and enantioselectivities. Under these reaction conditions, also the cross aldol reaction between aldehydes is possible. The recovered catalyst can be reused up to nine times providing similar results. More interestingly, these heterogeneous organocatalysts can be used in the intramolecular aldol reaction allowing the synthesis of the Wieland–Miescher and ketone analogues with up to 92% ee, with its reused being possible up to five times without detrimental on the obtained results.

Porous SiO2 antireflective (AR) coatings are prepared from the colloidal silica solution modified with methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) based on the sol-gel route. The viscosity of modified silica suspensions changes but their stability keeps when MTES is introduced. The refractive indices of modified coatings vary little after bake treatment from 100 to 150 Celsius. The modified silica coatings on Ti:sapphire crystal, owning good homogeneity, display prominent antireflective effect within the laser output waveband (750-850 nm) of Ti:sapphire lasers, with average transmission above 98.6%, and own laser induced damage thresholds (LIDTs) of more than 2.2 J/cm2 at 800 nm with the pulse duration of 300 ps.

In this article, we report an optical fluoride probe based on microstructured polymer optical fibers (MPOFs) which is modified with morin-Al complex doped silica gel film. This probe is fabricated by sol-gel fluxion coating process. Sol solution doped with morin-Al is directly inhaled into array holes of MPOF and then forms morin-Al-gel matrix film in them. The sensing probe shows different fluorescence intensity to different fluoride ion concentrations in the aqueous solution. The range of response is 550 mmol/L, under the condition of pH 4.6.
