The equilibrium structure of acetylene (also named ethyne) has been reinvestigated to resolve the small discrepancies noted between different determinations. The size of the system as well as the large amount of available experimental data provides the quite unique opportunity to check the magnitude and relevance of various contributions to equilibrium structure as well as to verify the accuracy of experimental results. With respect to pure theoretical investigation, quantum-chemical calculations at the coupled-cluster level have been employed together with extrapolation to the basis set limit, consideration of higher excitations in the cluster operator, inclusion of core correlation effects as well as relativistic and diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections. In particular, it is found that the extrapolation to the complete basis set limit, the inclusion of higher excitations in the electronic-correlation treatment and the relativistic corrections are of the same order of magnitude. It also appears that a basis set as large as a core-valence quintuple-zeta set is required for accurately accounting for the inner-shell correlation contribution. From a pure experimental point of view, the equilibrium structure has been determined using very accurate rotational constants recently obtained by a global analysis (that is to say that all non-negligible interactions are explicitely included in the Hamiltonian matrix) of rovibrational spectra. Finally, a semi-experimental equilibrium structure (where the equilibrium rotational constants are obtained from the experimental ground state rotational constants and computed rovibrational corrections) has been obtained from the available experimental ground-state rotational constants for ten isotopic species corrected for computed vibrational corrections. Such a determination led to the revision of the ground-state rotational constants of two isotopologues, thus showing that structural determination is a good method to identify errors in experimental rotational constants. The three structures are found in a very good agreement, and our recommended values are rCC 120.2958(7) pm and rCH 106.164(1) pm. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

The continuum distorted-wave eikonal initial-state (CDW-EIS) theory of Crothers and McCann (J Phys B 1983, 16, 3229) used to describe ionization in ion-atom collisions is generalized (G) to GCDW-EIS to incorporate the azimuthal angle dependence of each CDW in the final-state wave function. This is accomplished by the analytic continuation of hydrogenic-like wave functions from below to above threshold, using parabolic coordinates and quantum numbers including magnetic quantum numbers, thus providing a more complete set of states. At impact energies lower than 25 keVu(-1), the total ionization cross-section falls off, with decreasing energy, too quickly in comparison with experimental data. The idea behind and motivation for the GCDW-EIS model is to improve the theory with respect to experiment by including contributions from nonzero magnetic quantum numbers. We also therefore incidentally provide a new derivation of the theory of continuum distorted waves for zero magnetic quantum numbers while simultaneously generalizing it. An overview of a many-body approach to calculation of electronic transport in molecular systems is given. The physics required to describe electronic transport through a molecule at the many-body level, without relying on commonly made assumptions such as the Landauer formalism or linear response theory, is discussed. Physically, our method relies on the incorporation of scattering boundary conditions into a many-body wavefunction and application of the maximum entropy principle to the transport region. Mathematically, this simple physical model translates into a constrained nonlinear optimization problem. A strategy for solving the constrained optimization problem is given. We investigate a hitherto largely unexplored regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics in which a highly-reflective element positioned between the end-mirrors of a typical Fabry--P\'erot resonator strongly modifies the cavity response function, such that two longitudinal modes with different spatial parity are brought close to frequency degeneracy. We examine applications of this generic `optical coalescence' phenomenon for the generation of enhanced photon--phonon nonlinearities in optomechanics and atom--photon nonlinearities in cavity quantum electrodynamics with strongly-coupled emitters.

We address the out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics of an isolated quantum system consisting of a cavity optomechanical device. We explore the dynamical response of the system when driven out of equilibrium by a sudden quench of the coupling parameter and compute analytically the full distribution of the work generated by the process. We consider linear and quadratic optomechanical coupling, where the cavity field is parametrically coupled to either the position or the square of the position of a mechanical oscillator, respectively. In the former case we find that the average work generated by the quench is zero, whilst the latter leads to a non-zero average value. Through fluctuations theorems we access the most relevant thermodynamical figures of merit, such as the free energy difference and the amount of irreversible work generated. We thus provide a full charac- terization of the out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics in the quantum regime for nonlinearly coupled bosonic modes. Our study is the first due step towards the construction and full quantum analysis of an optomechanical machine working fully out of equilibrium.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx compounds with NH3 is a hot topic in recent years. Among various catalysts, zeolites are proved to be efficient and promising for NH3-SCR, yet the whole processes and intrinsic mechanism are still not well understood due to the structural complexity of zeolites. With the improvement of theoretical chemistry techniques, quantum-chemical calculations are now capable of modeling the structure, acidity, adsorption, and ultimately reaction pathways over zeolites to some extent. In this review, a brief summary of relevant concepts of NH3-SCR is presented. Cluster approaches, embedded techniques, and periodic treatments are described as three main methods. Details of quantum-chemical investigations toward the key issues such as, the structure of active sites, the adsorption of small molecules, and the reaction mechanism of NH3-SCR over zeolites are discussed. Finally, a perspective for future theoretical research is given.

Methods for both partial and full optimization of wavefunction parameters are explored, and these are applied to the LiH molecule. A partial optimization can be easily performed with little difficulty. But to perform a full optimization we must avoid a wrong minimum, and deal with linear-dependency, time step-dependency and ensemble-dependency problems. Five basis sets are examined. The optimized wavefunction with a 3-function set gives a variational energy of -7.998 + 0.005 a.u., which is comparable to that (-7.990 + 0.003) 1 of Reynold's unoptimized \fin ( a double-~ set of eight functions). The optimized wavefunction with a double~ plus 3dz2 set gives ari energy of -8.052 + 0.003 a.u., which is comparable with the fixed-node energy (-8.059 + 0.004)1 of the \fin. The optimized double-~ function itself gives an energy of -8.049 + 0.002 a.u. Each number above was obtained on a Bourrghs 7900 mainframe computer with 14 -15 hrs CPU time.

In Part I, theoretical derivations for Variational Monte Carlo calculations are compared with results from a numerical calculation of He; both indicate that minimization of the ratio estimate of Evar , denoted EMC ' provides different optimal variational parameters than does minimization of the variance of E MC • Similar derivations for Diffusion Monte Carlo calculations provide a theoretical justification for empirical observations made by other workers. In Part II, Importance sampling in prolate spheroidal coordinates allows Monte Carlo calculations to be made of E for the vdW molecule var He2' using a simplifying partitioning of the Hamiltonian and both an HF-SCF and an explicitly correlated wavefunction. Improvements are suggested which would permit the extension of the computational precision to the point where an estimate of the interaction energy could be made~

Using coupled-cluster approach full six-dimensional analytic potential energy surfaces for two cyclic SiC3 isomers [C-C transannular bond (I) and Si-C transannular bond (II)] have been generated and used to calculate anharmonic vibrational wave functions. Several strong low-lying anharmonic resonances have been found. In both isomers already some of the fundamental transitions cannot be described within the harmonic approximation. Adiabatic electron affinities and ionization energies have been calculated as well. The Franck-Condon factors for the photodetachment processes c-SiC3-(I)-> c-SiC3(I) and c-SiC3-(II)-> c-SiC3(II) are reported. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Raman activities and degrees of depolarization are reported for 14 complexes involving methanol, ethanol and water using the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ model. For ethanol both trans and gauche isomers are considered. The red-shifts of the OH stretching and the blue shifts of the bending tau(CO-OH) mode were analyzed for the proton-donor molecules upon hydrogen bond. The shift of the nu(CO) stretching mode of the alcohol molecules are also analyzed and found to be specific giving characterization of the amphoteric relation, being positive for the proton-acceptor and negative for the proton-donor molecule. We report the partitioning of the interaction-induced static electronic dipole (hyper)polarizabilities for linear hydrogen cyanide complexes into contributions arising from various interaction energy terms. We analyzed the nonadditivities of the studied properties and used these data to predict the electric properties of an infinite chain. The interaction-induced static electric dipole properties and their nonadditivities were analyzed using an approach based on numerical differentiation of the interaction energy components estimated in an external electric field. These were obtained using the hybrid variational-perturbational interaction energy decomposition scheme, augmented with coupled-cluster calculations, with singles, doubles, and noniterative triples. Our results indicate that the interaction-induced dipole moments and polarizabilities are primarily electrostatic in nature; however, the composition of the interaction hyperpolarizabilities is much more complex. The overlap effects substantially quench the contributions due to electrostatic interactions, and therefore, the major components are due to the induction and exchange induction terms, as well as the intramolecular electron-correlation corrections. A particularly intriguing observation is that the interaction first hyperpolarizability in the studied systems not only is much larger than the corresponding sum of monomer properties, but also has the opposite sign. We show that this effect can be viewed as a direct consequence of hydrogen-bonding interactions that lead to a decrease of the hyperpolarizability of the proton acceptor and an increase of the hyperpolarizability of the proton donor. In the case of the first hyperpolarizability, we also observed the largest nonadditivity of interaction properties (nearly 17%) which further enhances the effects of pairwise interactions.

This study reports a systematic state-of-the-art characterization of new sulfur-chlorine species on the [H, S(2), Cl] potential energy surface. Coupled cluster theory singles and doubles with perturbative contributions of connected triples, using the series of correlation consistent basis sets with extrapolations to the complete basis set limit (CBS), were employed to quantify the energetic quantities involved in the isomerization processes on this surface. The structures and vibrational frequencies are unique for some species and represent the most accurate investigation to date. These molecules are potentially a new route of coupling the sulfur and chlorine chemistries in the atmosphere, and conditions of high concentration of H(2)S (HS) like in volcanic eruptions might contribute to their formation. Also an assessment of the MP2/CBS approach relative to CCSD(T)/CBS provides insights on the expected performance of MP2/CBS on the characterization of polysulfides, and also of more complex systems containing disulfide bridges.
