The authors overview integrated pest management (IPM) in grain crops in north-eastern Australia, which is defined as the area north of latitude 32°S. Major grain crops in this region include the coarse grains (winter and summer cereals), oilseeds and pulses. IPM in these systems is complicated by the diversity of crops, pests, market requirements and cropping environments. In general, the pulse crops are at greatest risk, followed by oilseeds and then by cereal grains. Insecticides remain a key grain pest management tool in north-eastern Australia. IPM in grain crops has benefited considerably through the increased adoption of new, more selective insecticides and biopesticides for many caterpillar pests, in particular Helicoverpa spp. and loopers, and the identification of pest-crop scenarios where spraying is unnecessary (e.g. for most Creontiades spp. populations in soybeans). This has favoured the conservation of natural enemies in north-eastern Australia grain crops, and has arguably assisted in the management of silverleaf whitefly in soybeans in coastal Queensland. However, control of sucking pests and podborers such as Maruca vitrata remains a major challenge for IPM in summer pulses. Because these crops have very low pest-damage tolerances and thresholds, intervention with disruptive insecticides is frequently required, particularly during podfill. The threat posed by silverleaf whitefly demands ongoing multi-pest IPM research, development and extension as this pest can flare under favourable seasonal conditions, especially where disruptive insecticides are used injudiciously. The strong links between researchers and industry have facilitated the adoption of IPM practices in north-eastern Australia and augers well for future pest challenges and for the development and promotion of new and improved IPM tactics.
Intersex onscreen: An overview of recent fictional characters with intersex variations on television
Resumo:
Throughout history, people with intersex variations have been positioned somewhere between ‘prodigy literature and pornography, mythology and medical discourse’ (Gilbert 2000, 145). Indubitably, contemporary representations have changed in step with societal values, yet it could be argued there is still slippage, and, moreover, very little is seen or heard about intersex at all. Where once there was the awe and horror of the highly visible carnival sideshow or medical treatise, the intersex body is now rendered absent by medical intervention, which is invoked to fix the intersexed in both mind and body. This paper explores the fictional representation of people with intersex variations on screen – television and film in predominantly the genres of drama and comedy – arriving finally at characters originating from program-makers willing to work closely with the intersex community. Such texts disrupt unwarranted categorization and erasure by “owning” discursive practices, defying current medical interference and promoting ethical debates around the will-to-normalise what is considered to be aberrant, deviant and abject.

In this paper, an overview of some recent numerical simulations of stationary crack tip fields in elastic-plastic solids is presented. First, asymptotic analyses carried out within the framework of 2D plane strain or plane stress conditions in both pressure insensitive and pressure sensitive plastic solids are reviewed. This is followed by discussion of salient results obtained from recent computational studies. These pertain to 3D characteristics of elastic-plastic near-front fields under mixed mode loading, mechanics of fracture and simulation of near-tip shear banding process of amorphous alloys and influence of crack tip constraint on the structure of near-tip fields in ductile single crystals. These results serve to illustrate several important features associated with stress and strain distributions near the crack tip and provide the foundation for understanding the operative failure mechanisms. The paper concludes by highlighting some of the future prospects for this field of study.

This paper presents an overview of the 6th ALTA shared task that ran in 2015. The task was to identify in English texts all the potential cognates from the perspective of the French language. In other words, identify all the words in the English text that would acceptably translate into a similar word in French. We present the motivations for the task, the description of the data and the results of the 4 participating teams. We discuss the results against a baseline and prior work.

This chapter examines the history and breadth of use of the term “food literacy” in scholarly literature. It reviews and compares various popularly used definitions from diverse paradigms. Other terms such as “cooking”, “food skills” and “food wellbeing” used to describe the everyday knowledge, skills and behaviours used to meet food needs are also examined.

This paper presents an introduction to neurocomputers and an overview of the history of neurocomputers. Direct implementation methods of neurocomputers using techniques from microelectronics and photonics are discussed. Emulation methods using special-purpose hardware are highlighted. The role of parallel computing systems for improved performance is introduced. Some commercially available neurocomputers and performance issues of such systems are also presented.

The study of the curing behavior of an encapsulation material is very important and critical in terms of understanding the properties of the material. Differential scanning calorimetry and rheometry are two important tools that have been utilized to study curing reactions in polymeric systems. The present work deals with the curing of a mixture of hydride terminated polydimethylsiloxane, allyl functionalized alumina nanoparticles and Karstedt's catalyst. The real time curing behavior of the typical system was monitored non-isothermally by differential scanning calorimetry and rheometry. The results obtained from the respective techniques reveal that there is a good correlation between these two techniques. A mechanism is proposed for the curing reaction of the polymer system based on the curing curves obtained by the above two studies. In addition, the swelling study and contact angle measurement of the two composites was performed to evaluate the extent of cross-linking and hydrophobicity. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Homogenization of partial differential equations is relatively a new area and has tremendous applications in various branches of engineering sciences like: material science, porous media, study of vibrations of thin structures, composite materials to name a few. Though the material scientists and others had reasonable idea about the homogenization process, it was lacking a good mathematical theory till early seventies. The first proper mathematical procedure was developed in the seventies and later in the last 30 years or so it has flourished in various ways both application wise and mathematically. This is not a full survey article and on the other hand we will not be concentrating on a specialized problem. Indeed, we do indicate certain specialized problems of our interest without much details and that is not the main theme of the article. I plan to give an introductory presentation with the aim of catering to a wider audience. We go through few examples to understand homogenization procedure in a general perspective together with applications. We also present various mathematical techniques available and if possible some details about some of the techniques. A possible definition of homogenization would be that it is a process of understanding a heterogeneous (in-homogeneous) media, where the heterogeneties are at the microscopic level, like in composite materials, by a homogeneous media. In other words, one would like to obtain a homogeneous description of a highly oscillating in-homogeneous media. We also present other generalizations to non linear problems, porous media and so on. Finally, we will like to see a closely related issue of optimal bounds which itself is an independent area of research.
