An accurate and simple technique for measuring the input reflection coefficient and the frequency response of semiconductor laser diode chips is proposed and demonstrated. All the packaging parasitics could be obtained accurately using a calibrated probe, and the impedance of the intrinsic diode chip is deduced from the directly measured reflection coefficient. The directly measured impedance of a laser diode is affected strongly by the short bond wire. In the frequency response (S(2)1) measurements of semiconductor laser diode chips, the test fixture consists of a microwave probe, a submount, and a bond wire. The S-parameters of the probe could be determined using the short-open-match (SOM) method. Both the attenuation and the reflection of the test fixture have a strong influence on the directly measured frequency response, and in our proposed technique, the effect of test fixture is completely removed.

The polyetherketone (PEK-c) guest-host polymer films doped with (4'-nitro)-3-azo-9-ethyl-carbazole (NAEC) were prepared. The films were poled by corona-onset poling at elevated temperature (COPET). The orientational order parameter of the chromophores NAEC in poled polymer film was determined by measuring the absorption spectra of the films before and after being poled. By using the two-level model, the measured dispersion of the refractive index of the polymer film, and the dispersion of the first hyperpolarizability of chromophore NAEC, the dispersion of the macroscopic second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) and linear electrooptic (EO) coefficients was evaluated for the NAEC/PEK-c guest-host polymer film. Optical filters capable of single control parameter-based wide tuning are implemented and studied. A prototype surface micromachined 1.3μm Si-based MOEMS (micro-opto-electro-mechanical-systems) tunable filter exhibits a continuous and large tuning range of 90 nm at 50 V tuning voltage. The filter can be integrated with Si-based photodetector in a low-cost component for coarse wavelength division multiplexing systems operating in the 1.3μm band.

Capable of three-dimensional imaging of the cornea with micrometer-scale resolution, spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) offers potential advantages over Placido ring and Scheimpflug photography based systems for accurate extraction of quantitative keratometric parameters. In this work, an SDOCT scanning protocol and motion correction algorithm were implemented to minimize the effects of patient motion during data acquisition. Procedures are described for correction of image data artifacts resulting from 3D refraction of SDOCT light in the cornea and from non-idealities of the scanning system geometry performed as a pre-requisite for accurate parameter extraction. Zernike polynomial 3D reconstruction and a recursive half searching algorithm (RHSA) were implemented to extract clinical keratometric parameters including anterior and posterior radii of curvature, central cornea optical power, central corneal thickness, and thickness maps of the cornea. Accuracy and repeatability of the extracted parameters obtained using a commercial 859nm SDOCT retinal imaging system with a corneal adapter were assessed using a rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens as a phantom target. Extraction of these parameters was performed in vivo in 3 patients and compared to commercial Placido topography and Scheimpflug photography systems. The repeatability of SDOCT central corneal power measured in vivo was 0.18 Diopters, and the difference observed between the systems averaged 0.1 Diopters between SDOCT and Scheimpflug photography, and 0.6 Diopters between SDOCT and Placido topography.

Mixed-mode simulation, where device simulation is embedded directly within a circuit simulator, is used for the first time to provide scaling guidelines to achieve optimal digital circuit performance for double gate SOI MOSFETs. This significant advance overcomes the lack of availability of SPICE model parameters. The sensitivity of the gate delay and on-off current ratio to each of the key geometric and technological parameters of the transistor is quantified. The impact of the source-drain doping profile on circuit performance is comprehensively investigated.

In situ ellipsometry and Kerr polarimetry have been used to follow the continuous evolution of the optical and magneto- optical properties of multiple layers of Co and Pd during their growth. Films were sputter deposited onto a Pd buffer layer on glass substrates up to a maximum of N = 10 bi-layer periods according to the scheme glass/Pd(10)Ar x (0.3Co/3Pd) (nm). Magnetic hysteresis measurements taken during the deposition consistently showed strong perpendicular anisotropy at all stages of film growth following the deposition of a single monolayer of Co. Magneto-optic signals associated with the normal-incidence polar Kerr effect indicated strong polarization of Pd atoms at both Co-Pd and Pd-Co interfaces and that the magnitude of the complex magneto-optic Voigt parameter and the magnetic moment of the Pd decrease exponentially with distance from the interface with a decay constant of 1.1 nm(- 1). Theoretical simulations have provided an understanding of the observations and allow the determination of the ultrathin- film values of the elements of the skew-symmetric permittivity tensor that describe the optical and magneto-optical properties for both CO and Pd. Detailed structure in the observed Kerr ellipticity shows distinct Pd-thickness-dependent oscillations with a spatial period of about 1.6 nm that are believed to be associated with quantum well levels in the growing Pd layer.

An analytical approach for CMOS parameter extraction which includes the effect of parasitic resistance is presented. The method is based on small-signal equivalent circuit valid in all region of operation to uniquely extract extrinsic resistances, which can be used to extend the industry standard BSIM3v3 MOSFET model for radio frequency applications. The verification of the model was carried out through frequency domain measurements of S-parameters and direct time domain measurement at 2.4 GHz in a large signal non-linear mode of operation. The quenching of the electronically-excited, lumophoric state of [Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)(Ph4B-)(2)] by oxygen is studied in a wide variety of neat plasticizers. The Stern-Volmer constant, K-SV, is found to be inversely dependent upon the viscosity of the quenching medium, although the natural lifetime of the electronically excited state of [RU(bPY)(3)(2+)(Ph4B-)(2)] is largely independent of medium. The least viscous of the plasticizers tested, triethyl phosphate, did not, however, produce highly sensitive optical oxygen sensors when used to plasticize [RU(bPY)(3)(2+)(Ph4B-)(2)]-containing cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films, Instead, the compatibility of the polymer-plasticizer combination, as measured by the difference in the values of the solubility parameter of the two, appears to be a major factor in determining the overall oxygen sensitivity of the thin plastic films. For highly compatible polymer-plasticizer combinations, the plasticizer with the lowest viscosity produces films of the highest oxygen sensitivity. This situation arises because in the film the quenching process is partly diffusion-controlled and, as a result, the quenching rate constant is inversely proportional to the effective viscosity of the reaction medium.

A homologous family of dialkyl phthalates has been used to investigate the effect of plasticizer/polymer compatibility on the response characteristics of transparent, plastic, thin optical gas sensing films for CO2 and oxygen. Plasticizer/polymer compatibilities were determined through the value of the difference in solubility parameter, i.e. Delta delta, for the plasticizer and polymer with a Delta delta value of zero indicating high compatibility. A strong correlation was found between plasticizer/polymer compatibility and sensitivity in phenol red/ethyl cellulose CO2-sensitive films and this relationship extended to CO2-sensitive films based on other polymers such as polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate). It extended also to optical O-2-sensitive films implying that the relationship is general for thin-film optical sensors. Other results from the CO2-sensitive films in different polymers indicated that the film sensitivity is largely independent of the polymer matrix regardless of its inherent gas permeability, when a sufficient quantity of compatible plasticizer is present. We describe an apparatus designed to make non-demolition measurements on a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a double-well optical cavity. This apparatus contains, as well as the bosonic gas and the trap, an optical cavity. We show how the interaction between the light and the atoms, under appropriate conditions, can allow for a weakly disturbing yet highly precise measurement of the population imbalance between the two wells and its variance. We show that the setting is well suited for the implementation of quantum-limited estimation strategies for the inference of the key parameters defining the evolution of the atomic system and based on measurements performed on the cavity field. This would enable {\it de facto} Hamiltonian diagnosis via a highly controllable quantum probe.

PURPOSE: To compare anterior segment parameters between eyes of Chinese and Caucasians using anterior segment optical coherence tomography and to evaluate the association between these parameters and anterior chamber angle width between the two ethnic groups. METHODS: 60 Chinese and 60 Caucasians, 30 with open angles and 30 with narrow angles (defined as Shaffer grade < or =2 in > or =3 quadrants during dark room gonioscopy) in each group, were consecutively enrolled. One eye of each subject was randomly selected for imaging in a completely darkened room. Measurements, including anterior chamber depth (ACD), scleral spur-to-scleral spur distance (anterior chamber width (ACW)), anterior chamber angle width, iris convexity and iris thickness, were compared between the groups. The associations between angle opening distance and biometric measurements were evaluated with univariate and multivariate regression analyses. RESULTS: There were no differences in age, axial length, anterior chamber angle measurements, pupil diameter and iris convexity between Chinese and Caucasians in both open-angle and narrow-angle groups. However, the ACD and ACW were smaller and the iris was thicker in Chinese. In the multivariate analysis, the ACD was the most influential biometric parameter for angle opening distance in both Chinese and Caucasians. After adjusting the effects of axial length, age and sex, ACD and ACW were significantly smaller in Chinese. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese eyes had smaller ACD, smaller ACW and greater iris thickness than Caucasians. ACD was the most influential parameter in determining the angle width in both ethnic groups.

The rapid growth of the optical communication branches and the enormous demand for more bandwidth require novel networks such as dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). These networks enable higher bitrate transmission using the existing optical fibers. Micromechanically tunable optical microcavity devices like VCSELs, Fabry-Pérot filters and photodetectors are core components of these novel DWDM systems. Several air-gap based tunable devices were successfully implemented in the last years. Even though these concepts are very promising, two main disadvantages are still remaining. On the one hand, the high fabrication and integration cost and on the other hand the undesired adverse buckling of the suspended membranes. This thesis addresses these two problems and consists of two main parts: • PECVD dielectric material investigation and stress control resulting in membranes shape engineering. • Implementation and characterization of novel tunable optical devices with tailored shapes of the suspended membranes. For this purposes, low-cost PECVD technology is investigated and developed in detail. The macro- and microstress of silicon nitride and silicon dioxide are controlled over a wide range. Furthermore, the effect of stress on the optical and mechanical properties of the suspended membranes and on the microcavities is evaluated. Various membrane shapes (concave, convex and planar) with several radii of curvature are fabricated. Using this resonator shape engineering, microcavity devices such as non tunable and tunable Fabry-Pérot filters, VCSELs and PIN photodetectors are succesfully implemented. The fabricated Fabry-Pérot filters cover a spectral range of over 200nm and show resonance linewidths down to 1.5nm. By varying the stress distribution across the vertical direction within a DBR, the shape and the radius of curvature of the top membrane are explicitely tailored. By adjusting the incoming light beam waist to the curvature, the fundamental resonant mode is supported and the higher order ones are suppressed. For instance, a tunable VCSEL with 26 nm tuning range, 400µW maximal output power, 47nm free spectral range and over 57dB side mode suppresion ratio (SMSR) is demonstrated. Other technologies, such as introducing light emitting organic materials in microcavities are also investigated.

The scope of this work is the fundamental growth, tailoring and characterization of self-organized indium arsenide quantum dots (QDs) and their exploitation as active region for diode lasers emitting in the 1.55 µm range. This wavelength regime is especially interesting for long-haul telecommunications as optical fibers made from silica glass have the lowest optical absorption. Molecular Beam Epitaxy is utilized as fabrication technique for the quantum dots and laser structures. The results presented in this thesis depict the first experimental work for which this reactor was used at the University of Kassel. Most research in the field of self-organized quantum dots has been conducted in the InAs/GaAs material system. It can be seen as the model system of self-organized quantum dots, but is not suitable for the targeted emission wavelength. Light emission from this system at 1.55 µm is hard to accomplish. To stay as close as possible to existing processing technology, the In(AlGa)As/InP (100) material system is deployed. Depending on the epitaxial growth technique and growth parameters this system has the drawback of producing a wide range of nano species besides quantum dots. Best known are the elongated quantum dashes (QDash). Such structures are preferentially formed, if InAs is deposited on InP. This is related to the low lattice-mismatch of 3.2 %, which is less than half of the value in the InAs/GaAs system. The task of creating round-shaped and uniform QDs is rendered more complex considering exchange effects of arsenic and phosphorus as well as anisotropic effects on the surface that do not need to be dealt with in the InAs/GaAs case. While QDash structures haven been studied fundamentally as well as in laser structures, they do not represent the theoretical ideal case of a zero-dimensional material. Creating round-shaped quantum dots on the InP(100) substrate remains a challenging task. Details of the self-organization process are still unknown and the formation of the QDs is not fully understood yet. In the course of the experimental work a novel growth concept was discovered and analyzed that eases the fabrication of QDs. It is based on different crystal growth and ad-atom diffusion processes under supply of different modifications of the arsenic atmosphere in the MBE reactor. The reactor is equipped with special valved cracking effusion cells for arsenic and phosphorus. It represents an all-solid source configuration that does not rely on toxic gas supply. The cracking effusion cell are able to create different species of arsenic and phosphorus. This constitutes the basis of the growth concept. With this method round-shaped QD ensembles with superior optical properties and record-low photoluminescence linewidth were achieved. By systematically varying the growth parameters and working out a detailed analysis of the experimental data a range of parameter values, for which the formation of QDs is favored, was found. A qualitative explanation of the formation characteristics based on the surface migration of In ad-atoms is developed. Such tailored QDs are finally implemented as active region in a self-designed diode laser structure. A basic characterization of the static and temperature-dependent properties was carried out. The QD lasers exceed a reference quantum well laser in terms of inversion conditions and temperature-dependent characteristics. Pulsed output powers of several hundred milli watt were measured at room temperature. In particular, the lasers feature a high modal gain that even allowed cw-emission at room temperature of a processed ridge wave guide device as short as 340 µm with output powers of 17 mW. Modulation experiments performed at the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) showed a complex behavior of the QDs in the laser cavity. Despite the fact that the laser structure is not fully optimized for a high-speed device, data transmission capabilities of 15 Gb/s combined with low noise were achieved. To the best of the author`s knowledge, this renders the lasers the fastest QD devices operating at 1.55 µm. The thesis starts with an introductory chapter that pronounces the advantages of optical fiber communication in general. Chapter 2 will introduce the fundamental knowledge that is necessary to understand the importance of the active region`s dimensions for the performance of a diode laser. The novel growth concept and its experimental analysis are presented in chapter 3. Chapter 4 finally contains the work on diode lasers.

North African dust is important for climate through its direct radiative effect on solar and terrestrial radiation and its role in the biogeochemical system. The Dust Outflow and Deposition to the Ocean project (DODO) aimed to characterize the physical and optical properties of airborne North African dust in two seasons and to use these observations to constrain model simulations, with the ultimate aim of being able to quantify the deposition of iron to the North Atlantic Ocean. The in situ properties of dust from airborne campaigns measured during February and August 2006, based at Dakar, Senegal, are presented here. Average values of the single scattering albedo (0.99, 0.98), mass specific extinction (0.85 m^2 g^-1 , 1.14 m^2 g^-1 ), asymmetry parameter (0.68, 0.68), and refractive index (1.53--0.0005i,1.53--0.0014i) for the accumulation mode were found to differ by varying degrees between the dry and wet season, respectively. It is hypothesized that these differences are due to different source regions and transport processes which also differ between the DODO campaigns. Elemental ratios of Ca/Al were found to differ between the dry and wet season (1.1 and 0.5, respectively). Differences in vertical profiles are found between seasons and between land and ocean locations and reflect the different dynamics of the seasons. Using measurements of the coarse mode size distribution and illustrative Mie calculations, the optical properties are found to be very sensitive to the presence and amount of coarse mode of mineral dust, and the importance of accurate measurements of the coarse mode of dust is highlighted.

A range of side chain liquid crystal copolymers have been prepared using mesogenic and non-mesogenic units. It is found that high levels of the non-mesogenic moieties may be introduced without completely disrupting the organization of the liquid crystal phase. Incorporation of this comonomer causes a marked reduction in the glass transition temperature (Tg), presumably as a result of enhanced backbone mobility and a corresponding lowering of the nematic transition temperature, thereby restricting the temperature range for stability of the liquid crystal phase. The effect of the interactions between the various components of these side-chain polymers on their electro-optic responses is described. Infrared (i.r.) dichroism measurements have been made to determine the order parameters of the liquid crystalline side-chain polymers. By identifying a certain band (CN stretching) in the i.r. absorption spectrum, the order parameter of the mesogenic groups can be obtained. The temperature and composition dependence of the observed order parameter are related to the liquid crystal phase transitions and to the electro-optic response. It is found that the introduction of the non-mesogenic units into the polymer chain lowers the threshold voltage of the electro-optic response over and above that due to the reduction in the order parameter. The dynamic electro-optic responses are dominated by the temperature-dependent viscosity and evidence is presented for relaxation processes involving the polymer backbone which are on a time scale greater than that for the mesogenic side-chain units.
