A method is proposed for merging different nadir-sounding climate data records using measurements from high-resolution limb sounders to provide a transfer function between the different nadir measurements. The two nadir-sounding records need not be overlapping so long as the limb-sounding record bridges between them. The method is applied to global-mean stratospheric temperatures from the NOAA Climate Data Records based on the Stratospheric Sounding Unit (SSU) and the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU), extending the SSU record forward in time to yield a continuous data set from 1979 to present, and providing a simple framework for extending the SSU record into the future using AMSU. SSU and AMSU are bridged using temperature measurements from the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS), which is of high enough vertical resolution to accurately represent the weighting functions of both SSU and AMSU. For this application, a purely statistical approach is not viable since the different nadir channels are not sufficiently linearly independent, statistically speaking. The near-global-mean linear temperature trends for extended SSU for 1980–2012 are −0.63 ± 0.13, −0.71 ± 0.15 and −0.80 ± 0.17 K decade−1 (95 % confidence) for channels 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The extended SSU temperature changes are in good agreement with those from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on the Aura satellite, with both exhibiting a cooling trend of ~ 0.6 ± 0.3 K decade−1 in the upper stratosphere from 2004 to 2012. The extended SSU record is found to be in agreement with high-top coupled atmosphere–ocean models over the 1980–2012 period, including the continued cooling over the first decade of the 21st century.

This paper proposes a framework for merging inconsistent beliefs in the analysis of security protocols. The merge application is a procedure of computing the inferred beliefs of message sources and resolving the conflicts among the sources. Some security properties of secure messages are used to ensure the correctness of authentication of messages. Several instances are presented, and demonstrate our method is useful in resolving inconsistent beliefs in secure messages.

This special issue is in response to the increasing convergence between grids and pervasive computing, while different approaches exist, challenges and opportunities are numerous in this context (Parashar and Pierson, to appear). The research papers selected for this special issue represent recent progresses in the field, including works on mobile ad-hoc grids, service and data discovery, context-aware application building and context accuracy, and communication. All of these papers not only provide novel ideas and state-of-the-art techniques in the field, but also stimulate future research in the Pervasive Grid environment.

Our paper positions four-wheel drive (4WD) travel into the Australian desert by veteran or dedicated travellers as a spiritual experience in three ways: by considering the desert itself as a sacred space; the experience of such a journey as a form of ‘nature religion’; and by viewing the actual journey itself as pilgrimage. Our argument is informed by interviews with expert 4WDers to the desert. Our study might be useful in designing sustainable strategies for 4WD desert tourism, as well as for scholars from a variety of disciplines such as sustainability and environment studies, religious studies and tourism studies, to name a few.

Cell membrane changes its morphology during many physiological processes with the assistance of a solid support, such as the cytoskeleton, under an environmental stimulus. Here, a novel type of stimuli-responsive lipogel was fabricated, mimicking the changes of cell membrane. The lipogel was prepared from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) microgel particle and phospholipid by a solvent-exchange method. The temperature dependent volume phase transition of pNIPAM triggers reversible transformation of the lipogel between a lipid vesicle-coated sun-like structure and a contracted hybrid sphere, through lipid merging and protrusion processes, respectively. By contrast, the salt induced pNIPAM phase transition leads to an irreversible vesicle release behaviour. The lipogel creates a unique platform for studying cell membrane behaviour and provides promising candidates in drug delivery and controlled release applications. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
