Complications liées aux piercings [Complications of body piercing].

Au sein de la population générale, de plus en plus de personnes arborent des piercings, en particulier parmi les jeunes adultes. Hormis les réactions inflammatoires et les infections locales, les complications liées à ces piercings sont méconnues. Les personnes ne sont en général pas informées des risques avant de réaliser un piercing et leurs antécédents, traitements médicamenteux ou comorbidités éventuelles, sont largement négligés par les personnes qui réalisent le geste. Les complications sont le plus souvent locales et bénignes, mais des complications sérieuses et parfois mortelles ont été décrites dans la littérature. Cet article propose une revue des problématiques possibles auxquelles pourrait être confronté un médecin de premier recours, face à un patient qui souhaiterait réaliser un piercing ou présenterait des complications suite à la mise en place d'un tel dispositif. The trend of body piercing has grown in popularity in the past decade within the general population and especially among young adults. Complications of body piercing include local inflammation and infections, but severe complications are also possible and largely underestimated. People are usually not aware of the risks before making a piercing, and their medical history, medication and comorbidities are largely neglected by the people who realise the piercing. This article presents a review of the complications that a primary care physician may observe, for a patient who wishes to make a piercing, or presents complications due to the implementation of such a device.

Banks, Lies and Bricks: The Determinants of Home Value Inflation in Spain during the Housing Boom

During the first decade of this century, Spain experienced the most important economic and housing boom in its recent history. This situation led the lending industry to dramatically expand through the mortgage market. The high competition among lenders caused a dramatic lowering of credit standards. During this period, lenders operating in the Spanish mortgage market artificially inflated appraised home values in order to draw larger mortgages. By doing this, lenders gave financially constrained households access to mortgage credit. In this paper, we analyze this phenomenon for this first time. To do so, we resort to a unique dataset of matched mortgage-dwelling-borrower characteristics covering the period 2004–2010. Our data allow us to construct an unbiased measure of property’s over-appraisal, since transaction prices in our data also includes any potential side payment in the transactions. Our findings indicate that i) in Spain, appraised home values were inflated on average by around 30% with respect to transaction prices; ii) creditconstrained households were more likely to be involved in mortgages with inflated house values; and iii) a regional indicator of competition in the lending market suggests that inflated appraisal values were also more likely to appear in more competitive regional mortgage markets. La influència de l’Educació Física de l’ESO sobre els hàbits fisicoesportius en adolescents de l’IES Alt Berguedà

És de vital importància conèixer els hàbits fisicoesportius dels adolescents com a punt de partida per a la promoció d’estils de vida saludables. Aquesta promoció en l’àmbit educatiu en gran mesura es realitza a través de l’Educació Física, mostrant-se com a un dels principals objectius d’aquesta assignatura al llarg de l’Educació Secundària Obligatòria. Amb aquesta funció tant important cal saber si l’EF influeix en l’adquisició i manteniment d’aquests hàbits per tal d’adaptar-la a les necessitats dels alumnes. Per aquest motiu en el present treball s’analitzen els hàbits esportius, els motius de pràctica i la influència que té l’EF de l’ESO sobre aquests a 74 adolescents de 3r i 4rt d’ESO de l’IES Alt Berguedà. Els resultats mostren que el 78% dels enquestats realitzen alguna activitat fisicoesportiva de forma regular. En relació als motius de pràctica tant en nois com en noies és perquè els agrada l’esport (30% i 25% respectivament). Pel què fa a la influència de l’Educació Física aquesta es mostra pràcticament inexistent on tan sols un 18% dels enquestats ha respost que els hagi influït bastant o molt positivament en els seus hàbits fisicoesportius. Per tant, des de l’àmbit educatiu cal reflexionar sobre com adaptar l’EF per influir en els hàbits dels nostres adolescents.

Organização de pesquisa no Brasil: lições do passado, propostas para o futuro

Chemical research in Brazil has grown significantly in the past 20 years, largely thanks to the Brazilian S&T Development Program of the federal government (PADCT). However, the newly achieved levels of highly qualified manpower and research infra-structure require new research organization frameworks to make science, technology and innovation really useful and meaningful for the citizens. The current requirements for creating viable networks of academic and industry researchers are presented and discussed as well as some structural and procedural bottlenecks that have to be eliminated, to achieve maximum high-quality science, technology and relevant innovation output.

Ensino de imunologia na educação médica: lições de Akira Kurosawa

O ensino e a investigação no campo da Imunologia se inscrevem, prevalentemente, num paradigma marcial - ou belicoso -, segundo o qual as interações hospedeiro-microrganismo são vistas de acordo com uma concepção de processos de ataque-defesa. Uma vez que este saber é tradicionalmente abordado nos cursos de graduação da área de saúde, tal perspectiva tem evidente influência na formação destes profissionais, incluídos os médicos. No presente artigo, reflete-se sobre as questões pedagógicas relativas ao modelo ataque-defesa. Realizou-se uma pesquisa teórica, utilizando-se o seguinte método: (1) revisão crítica da literatura, com textos obtidos nos livros e nos capítulos de livros de Imunologia; (2) leitura crítica dos textos; (3) elaboração de síntese reflexiva sobre o tema. Identificou-se que o modelo marcial da Imunologia se apresentou hegemônico nos livros-texto consultados, estando inscrito em idêntica concepção teórica inerente à medicina ocidental, ajudando a compor a visão dos estudantes dos cursos de graduação e pós-graduação e dos trabalhadores da área de saúde. É possível buscar alternativas, inclusive possibilidades para pensar a Imunologia em termos de novos modelos, em termos de homeostase e interdependência (ambos delimitando um paradigma ecológico), talvez mais propícios à abordagem das questões que ora se impõem nos seus horizontes, com inquestionáveis efeitos na educação.

Avaliação cardiológica de pacientes portadores de doença renal crônica: quais as lições?

INTRODUÇÃO: Pacientes com doença renal crônica (DRC) apresentam sinergismo entre fatores de risco tradicionais para aterosclerose e emergentes derivados do estado urêmico. OBJETIVO: Traçar o perfil epidemiológico de um grupo de pacientes com DRC submetido à avaliação cardiológica. MÉTODOS: Pacientes sintomáticos - com isquemia em cintilografia miocárdica e/ou disfunção sistólica ao ecodopplercardiograma - com idade maior que 50 anos e diabetes mellitus (DM) como causa da DRC e aqueles com dois ou mais fatores de risco ateroscleróticos realizaram cineangiocoronariografia. Assintomáticos - não diabéticos e sem fatores de risco - foram investigados com ecodopplercardiograma e aqueles com único fator de risco, por meio de ecodopplercardiograma e cintilografia. RESULTADOS: Foram estudados 46 pacientes, 58,7% homens, idade de 50-70 ± 11,7 anos, 91,3% dialíticos. Tempo de hemodiálise: 61,96 ± 55,1 meses. Hipertensão arterial foi causa da DRC em 56,5%. Dos 28 pacientes (60,9%) submetidos à cineangiocoronariografia, 53,6% apresentaram doença arterial coronariana (DAC). Os pacientes foram divididos em três grupos: com DAC (A), sem DAC (B) e não submetidos à cineangiocoronariografia (C). Diferença significativa ocorreu entre os Grupos B e C na frequência de índice tibiobraquial (ITB) anormal (p = 0,026), com ausência de ITB anormal no Grupo C e na média de idade, superior no B (p = 0,045). No Grupo A, 53,3% dos pacientes estavam em avaliação pré-paratireoidectomia (PTX). CONCLUSÃO: Este estudo confirmou a alta frequência de alterações cardiovasculares, inclusive de DAC, nos pacientes portadores de DRC, principalmente naqueles em diálise.

New pension programs in Latin America: lessons from the Argentinean experience. This work analyzes the political constraints of pension reform in Argentina. The first part presents a brief description of the development of pension programs in Latin America. Additionally, it also discusses the pension system crisis and the main proposals in order to overcome this crisis. The second part examines the peculiarities of the Argentine pension reform, with specific attention on economic imperatives and political constraints which have shaped the pension reform project of Menem´s Government (1989-1999). The article demonstrates that there are a large gap between the new system promises and its outcomes.

Metas de inflação: lições da era Greenspan

This paper approaches the experience of monetary policy in the Greenspan period and suggests what lessons could be learnt. The adoption of inflation targeting would denote a step backward in the policymaking process in the USA, for, since the 1980s, a distinctive feature is flexibility of response to adjust to unexpected events and changing environments. The Fed was able to exercise an informed judgement in critical situations and this opens the case for the importance of not restraining policymakers' actions through the adoption of tight rules. Furthermore, that the various experiences with inflation targeting are indisputably huge successes, and that this framework represents the state of the art (therefore nothing else can alternatively be done), remains to be seen.

Karl Popper versus Theodor Adorno: lições de um confronto histórico

Karl Popper versus Theodor Adorno: Lessons from a historical confrontation. In 1961, during the Congress of the German Society of Sociology, two great theoretical references of the XX century faced in a historical debate about the logic of the social sciences. In addition to methodological issues strict sense, the confrontation became known as a debate between positivism and dialectic. The article first deals with the theoretical trajectories of Popper and Adorno and the relation of their theories with their political and ideological certainties. On one hand, the trajectory of the Popperian epistemology is examined, its contributions and vigorous attacks on Marx in what he called 'poverty of historicism" and false predictive Marxist world, and, on the other hand, the role of Adorno in the Frankfurt School, his criticism of totalitarianism and the defense of a critical emancipatory reason. The article also deals with the confrontation itself, the exposure of Popper's twenty-seven theses that culminate with the situation logic and the method of the economy as exemplary for the social sciences and Adorno's critical perspective of sociology and society as non-separable objects. In conclusion we show how the articulation of theory with the weltanschauung of each author helps to clarify the terms of the debate and how the confrontation contributed unequivocally to the dynamics of scientific progress and for the critical history of the ideas.

Lições de coisas: concepção científica e projeto modernizador para a sociedade

O objetivo deste artigo é compreender alguns aspectos da cultura escolar, assinalando a seleção de valores culturais, econômicos e educacionais operada pela instrução escolar, com base na análise de manuais didáticos para uso de professores, elaborados nas décadas finais do século XIX e fundamentados no Método de Ensino Intuitivo ou Lições de Coisas. Embora expressem a mesma fundamentação filosófica, os manuais apresentam diferentes procedimentos para o ensino dos conteúdos escolares que se configuram como visões específicas do progresso científico. Vinculados ao projeto modernizador da sociedade, em curso no século XIX, as diferenças apresentadas pelos manuais nos informam sobre as diversas vertentes constitutivas desse projeto.
