A novel vinyl ether, 2,2-dimethyl-4-vinyioxymethyl-1,3-dioxol (DMVMD), that has a dimethyl ketal protected vicinal diol functionality was synthesizied from readily available starting materials, such as glycerol, acetone and acetylene. Copolymerisation of DMVMD with maleic anhydride (MAH) in various molar ratios was carried out using a free radical initiator. The composition of the copolymer was established by conductometric titration, and was found to be 1:1 irrespective of the monomer feed composition thus establishing its alternating nature. The copolymer formed clear free standing films upon solvent casting which became insoluble upon prolonged exposure to ambeint atmosphere. The insolubility is ascribed to moisture induced crosslinking. A plausible mechanism for the crosslinking involves the hydrolysis of some of the anhydride groups, followed by acid catalysed deketalization, and then by the reaction of the alcoholic groups, thus generated, with the residual anhydride to give ester crosslinks. This hypothesis was confirmed both by model reactions and insitu FT-IR studies.

Rammed earth is an energy efficient and low carbon emission alternative for load bearing walls. This paper attempts to examine the influence of clay content and moisture content on the compressive strength of cement stabilised rammed earth (CSRE) through experimental investigations. Compressive strength of CSRE prisms was monitored both in dry and wet (saturated) conditions. Major conclusions of the study are:(a) Optimum clay content for maximum compressive strength is about 16%, (b) the strength of CSRE is sensitive to the moisture content at the time of testing, (c) Strength in saturated condition is less than half of the dry strength and (d) Water absorption (saturated water content) increases as the clay content of the soil mix increases and it is in the range of 12 to 16% for the CRSE prisms with 8% cement.

A major myonecrotic zinc containing metalloprotease `malabarin' with thrombin like activity was purified by the combination of gel permeation and anion exchange chromatography from T. malabaricus snake venom. MALDI-TOF analysis of malabarin indicated a molecular mass of 45.76 kDa and its N-terminal sequence was found to be Ile-Ile-Leu-Pro(Leu)-Ile-Gly-Val-Ile-Leu(Glu)-Thr-Thr. Atomic absorption spectral analysis of malabarin raveled the association of zinc metal ion. Malabarin is not lethal when injected i.p. or i.m. but causes extensive hemorrhage and degradation of muscle tissue within 24 hours. Sections of muscle tissue under light microscope revealed hemorrhage and congestion of blood vessel during initial stage followed by extensive muscle fiber necrosis with elevated levels of serum creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activity. Malabarin also exhibited strong procoagulant action and its procoagulant action is due to thrombin like activity; it hydrolyzes fibrinogen to form fibrin clot. The enzyme preferentially hydrolyzes A alpha followed by B beta subunits of fibrinogen from the N-terminal region and the released products were identified as fibrinopeptide A and fibrinopeptide B by MALDI. The myonecrotic, fibrinogenolytic and subsequent procoagulant activities of malabarin was neutralized by specific metalloprotease inhibitors such as EDTA, EGTA and 1, 10-phenanthroline but not by PMSF a specific serine protease inhibitor. Since there is no antivenom available to neutralize local toxicity caused by T. malabaricus snakebite, EDTA chelation therapy may have more clinical relevance over conventional treatment.

Estimation of soil parameters by inverse modeling using observations on either surface soil moisture or crop variables has been successfully attempted in many studies, but difficulties to estimate root zone properties arise when heterogeneous layered soils are considered. The objective of this study was to explore the potential of combining observations on surface soil moisture and crop variables - leaf area index (LAI) and above-ground biomass for estimating soil parameters (water holding capacity and soil depth) in a two-layered soil system using inversion of the crop model STICS. This was performed using GLUE method on a synthetic data set on varying soil types and on a data set from a field experiment carried out in two maize plots in South India. The main results were (i) combination of surface soil moisture and above-ground biomass provided consistently good estimates with small uncertainity of soil properties for the two soil layers, for a wide range of soil paramater values, both in the synthetic and the field experiment, (ii) above-ground biomass was found to give relatively better estimates and lower uncertainty than LAI when combined with surface soil moisture, especially for estimation of soil depth, (iii) surface soil moisture data, either alone or combined with crop variables, provided a very good estimate of the water holding capacity of the upper soil layer with very small uncertainty whereas using the surface soil moisture alone gave very poor estimates of the soil properties of the deeper layer, and (iv) using crop variables alone (else above-ground biomass or LAI) provided reasonable estimates of the deeper layer properties depending on the soil type but provided poor estimates of the first layer properties. The robustness of combining observations of the surface soil moisture and the above-ground biomass for estimating two layer soil properties, which was demonstrated using both synthetic and field experiments in this study, needs now to be tested for a broader range of climatic conditions and crop types, to assess its potential for spatial applications. The majority of studies pertaining to lead retention by clays and soils have examined the mechanisms, kinetics, and adsorption isotherms using the batch experiment technique that employs solid: water extracts of 1:10 and 1:20. Field soil deposits generally have much lower gravimetric water content ranging between 9 and 45%. Given the wide disparity in the solids: water ratio employed in the batch experiment technique and that prevailing in field deposits, this paper examines the lead retention characteristics of soils at field moisture contents (6%, 13%, and 25%) using artificially lead-contaminated soil specimens. A residually derived (i.e., formed by in-situ weathering of parent rock) red soil was used to prepare the artificially contaminated soil specimens. The impact of variations in clay content on lead retention was examined by diluting the residual soil with various amounts (0 to 60%) of river sand. Soil specimens remolded at 6 and 13% moisture contents produced very stiff to hard soils on compaction, while specimens remolded at 25% moisture content existed in the slurry state. The soil specimens were contaminated with low (30mg/kg) to high (2500mg/kg) concentrations of lead ions by remolding them with 160ppm to 10,000ppm ionic lead solutions. Lead retention by soils at field moisture contents was determined by extracting the lead from the soil using a water leach test. Experimental results showed that the bulk (71 to 99%) of the added lead was retained by the soil in insoluble form at the field moisture content. Correlations between the amount of lead retained and soil/solution parameters indicated that the amounts of Pb retained at field moisture content is a function of the initial Pb addition, total sand content, effective clay porosity, and soil pH.

Flexible and thermally stable, freestanding hybrid organic/inorganic based polymer-composite films have been fabricated using a simple solution casting method. Polyvinylbutyral and amine functionalized mesoporous silica were used to synthesize the composite. An additional polyol-''tripentaerythritol''-component was also used to increase the -OH group content in the composite matrix. The moisture permeability of the composites was investigated by following a calcium degradation test protocol. This showed a reduction in the moisture permeability with the increase in functionalized silica loadings in the matrix. A reduction in permeability was observed for the composites as compared to the neat polymer film. The thermal and mechanical properties of these composites were also investigated by various techniques like thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, tensile experiments, and dynamic mechanical analysis. It was observed that these properties detonate with the increase in the functionalized silica content and hence an optimized loading is required in order to retain critical properties. This deterioration is due to the aggregation of the fillers in the matrix. Furthermore, the films were used to encapsulate P3HT (poly 3 hexyl thiophene) based organic Schottky structured diodes, and the diode characteristics under accelerated aging conditions were studied. The weathered diodes, encapsulated with composite film showed an improvement in the lifetime as compared to neat polymer film. The initial investigation of these films suggests that they can be used as a moisture barrier layer for organic electronics encapsulation application.

Flexible, nano-composite moisture barrier films of poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) with surface modified montmorillonite fabricated by solution casting were used to encapsulate organic devices. The composite films were characterized by FTIR, UV-visible spectroscopy and SEM imaging. Thermal and mechanical properties of the composite films were studied by DSC and UTM. Calcium degradation test was used to determine the transmission rate of water vapour through the composite films, which showed a gradual reduction from similar to 0.1 g m(-2) day(-1) to 0.0001 g m(-2) day(-1) with increasing modified montmorillonite loading in the neat copolymer. The increase in moisture barrier performance is attributed to the decreased water vapour diffusivity due to matrix-filler interactions in the composite. The accelerated aging test was carried out for non-encapsulated and encapsulated devices to evaluate the efficiency of the encapsulants. The encapsulated devices exhibited longer lifetimes indicating the efficacy of the encapsulant.

The presence of moisture in oil impregnated paper insulation (OIP) is detrimental to its long time performance. Until recently, it was thought insulation ageing was only a function of temperature and electrical stress. It has now been realized that moisture in all its forms causes rapid degradation of the electrical and mechanical properties with time. In this study, insulation paper samples were conditioned for desired level of moisture and were impregnated with premium quality transformer oil. The oil impregnated samples with 1 to 3 % moisture content were aged at 90 to 130 C. The indices for determining the extent of ageing considered in this work are degree of polymerization (DP), furan, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide content. These quantities were monitored throughout the ageing experimental run. End-of-life (EOL) criterion used here is the reduction in the value of DP. Phenomenological models for estimating the service life of insulation are proposed and are validated against actual experimental data.

In this study, mesoporous silica-cyclic olefin copolymer nanocomposite films were fabricated by solution casting. With an increase in silica loading, the stiffness of the matrix increased. The nanocomposite film shows increased strain to failure with moisture after aging by matrix plasticization. The storage modulus and loss factor for samples with silica content show better results compared with pristine polymer, as indicated by dynamic mechanical analysis. The interaction between filler-polymer chain exhibit hydrophobicity compared to the neat polymer. Water absorption studies at room temperature and near the T-g of the polymer (similar to 64 degrees C) were carried out. The nanocomposites up to 4 wt% filler reduces the water diffusion by forming hydrogen and chemical bonding. The result by calcium degradation test method for moisture permeability and Schottky structured organic device encapsulation under weathering condition confirms the effective reinforcement effect of silica particles in the matrix. Functionalized cenosphere in PVB composite films were fabricated by melt processing. The composites show higher tensile strength with lower failure strain with increased filler ratio in the matrix. Fractographic images of the samples and DMA studies indicate brittle failure of the matrix. Moisture permeation and water contact angle studies reveal improved hydrophobicity of the matrix, while the factor of surface roughness increases the wettability at higher filler content. Schottky-structured devices encapsulated with functionalized cenosphere indicate enhanced resistance to moisture and increased life time for the devices.

In this work, a hybrid-polymer nanocomposite film, based on polyvinyl butyral/amino-silane functionalized nano alumina, was fabricated by melt processing. The calcium degradation measurements suggest the functionalized nanocomposite films exhibit higher resistance towards moisture penetration as compared to the neat alumina loaded films. Thermal stability, mechanical strength, and contact angle studies of the composites were also conducted to evaluate the performance of the functionalized alumina loaded films. These nanocomposite films were encapsulated over Al/P3HT/ITO Schottky structured device. The changes observed in the current density of the devices to the applied voltage before and after accelerated aging conditions are presented. The nanocomposite with functionalized alumina films exhibits 50% change in current density, which is superior to that attained with neat and non-functionalized films. POLYM. Motivated by observations of the mean state of tropical precipitable water (PW), a moist, first baroclinic mode, shallow-water system on an equatorial beta-plane with a background saturation profile that depends on latitude and longitude is studied. In the presence of a latitudinal moisture gradient, linear analysis of the non-rotating problem reveals large-scale, symmetric, eastward and westward propagating unstable modes. The introduction of a zonal moisture gradient breaks the east-west symmetry of the unstable modes. The effects of rotation are then included by numerically solving the resulting eigenvalue problem on an equatorial beta-plane. With a purely meridional moisture gradient, the system supports large-scale, low-frequency, eastward and westward moving neutral modes. Some of the similarities, and some of the discrepancies of these modes with intraseasonal tropical waves are pointed out. Finally, a zonal moisture gradient in the presence of rotation renders some of the aforementioned neutral modes unstable. In particular, according to observations of large-scale, low-frequency tropical variability, it is seen that regions where the background saturation profile increases (decreases) to the east favour eastward (westward) moving moist modes.

The current study presents an algorithm to retrieve surface Soil Moisture (SM) from multi-temporal Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. The developed algorithm is based on the Cumulative Density Function (CDF) transformation of multi-temporal RADARSAT-2 backscatter coefficient (BC) to obtain relative SM values, and then converts relative SM values into absolute SM values using soil information. The algorithm is tested in a semi-arid tropical region in South India using 30 satellite images of RADARSAT-2, SMOS L2 SM products, and 1262 SM field measurements in 50 plots spanning over 4 years. The validation with the field data showed the ability of the developed algorithm to retrieve SM with RMSE ranging from 0.02 to 0.06 m(3)/m(3) for the majority of plots. Comparison with the SMOS SM showed a good temporal behaviour with RMSE of approximately 0.05 m(3)/m(3) and a correlation coefficient of approximately 0.9. The developed model is compared and found to be better than the change detection and delta index model. The approach does not require calibration of any parameter to obtain relative SM and hence can easily be extended to any region having time series of SAR data available.

Reactive interlayers consisting of zero valent iron and copper nanoparticles have been successfully incorporated into Surlyn films to fabricate moisture barrier materials with reduced water vapor permeabilities. The reactive nanoparticles dispersed in stearic acid were employed as the interlayers due to their ability to react with moisture. The water vapor transmission rates through the fabricated barrier films with reactive iron and copper interlayers decreased by over 4 orders of magnitude when compared to neat Surlyn. The flexibility and transparency of the barrier films have been evaluated by tensile and UV-visible experiments. Moreover, the accelerated aging studies conducted in accordance with the ISOS-III protocol confirmed the increased lifetimes of the organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices encapsulated with these reactive barrier films.
