(Excerto) In times past, learning to read, write and do arithmetic was to get on course to earn the “writ of emancipation” in society. These skills are still essential today, but are not enough to live in society. Reading and critically understanding the world we live in, with all its complexity, difficulties and challenges, require not only other skills (learning to search for and validate information, reading with new codes and grammar, etc) but, to a certain extent, also metaskills, matrixes and mechanisms that are transversal to the different and new literacies, are necessary. They are needed not just to interpret but equally to communicate and participate in the little worlds that make up our everyday activities as well as, in a broader sense, in the world of the polis, which today is a global world.

This book was produced in the scope of a research project entitled “Navigating with ‘Magalhães’: Study on the Impact of Digital Media in Schoolchildren”. This study was conducted between May 2010 and May 2013 at the Communication and Society Research Centre, University of Minho, Portugal and it was funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (PTDC/CCI-COM/101381/2008). As we shall explain in more detail later in this book, the main objective of that research project was to analyse the impact of the Portuguese government programme named ´e-escolinha´ launched in 2008 within the Technological Plan for Education. This Plan responds to the principles of the Lisbon Strategy signed in 2000 and rereleased in the Spring European Council of 2005.

We have isolated a clone of Trypanosoma cruzi genimic DNA, lambda 3b2-5, which contains sequences that are reiterated in the genome. Northtern blot analysis showed that clone 3b2-5 hybridizes to 1,200-5,000 bases different mRNA species. The number of mRNAs species hybridized to clone 3b2-5 exceeds its coding capacity showing that this clone carries sequences that are common to several mRNAs species and conserved in the poly A(+) RNA. These sequences are not homologous to the T. cruzi spliced leader sequence, since clone 3b2-5 hybridize to a synthetic 20 nucleotice complementary to the spliced leader sequence. Clone 3b2-5 does not hybridize to DNA and RNA from several genera of Trypanosomatidae and other Trypanosoma species indicating that it carries T. cruzi species-specific sequences.

Como es bien sabido, uno de los objetivos de las políticas de desarrollo rural en la UE es aumentar la participación de las mujeres en el mercado de trabajo y fomentar su participación en la promoción de proyectos en el mundo rural. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar los factores que determinan la participación de las mujeres en la promoción de proyectos en zonas rurales en base al análisis de los proyectos que recibieron subvenciones en los doce Grupos del Programa Leader+ de Catalunya. A partir de los resultados obtenidos se formulan una serie de consideraciones y recomendaciones para fomentar la presencia femenina en el empresariado del mundo rural.

Levelling up - Securing Health Improvement by Promoting Social Inclusion - A Cross Border Action Plan for the North West of Ireland Vision - The aim of 'Levelling Up' is to work towards a society where all voices are heard, where the vulnerable and those on the margins are supported to be involved and in which plans developed for the people are shaped by the people. Their vision is of a region in which organisations and politicians actively demonstrate a commitment to equity – equity both within the North West and between the North West and the rest of Ireland North and South.

This is a publication of The National Council on Ageing and Older People The Conference took place on October 3, 2005 . It attracted almost 250 delegates from across the statutory, voluntary and private sectors, and from every county. The Conference provided the opportunity for delegates to focus on the issue of social inclusion of older people at local level and the challenges it presents. 19.6.2011 I am pleased to present the Report of the Working Group on Congregated Settings, which is the outcome and culmination of a very significant piece of data capture, research and analysis. The Report was initiated by the Primary, Community and Community Care Directorate in 2007 to develop a national plan and associated change programme for moving people from congregated settings to the community in line with Government policy. The Drug Misuse Research Division of the Health Research Board operates the National Drug Treatment Reporting System (NDTRS). The system is used to provide epidemiological information on treated problem drug misuse in Ireland and informs policy makers, researchers and the general public. The NDTRS collates data from participating treatment centres in all Health Board areas, however a gap in information exists in that drug misusers in treatment units within prisons and those treated by General Practitioners are not included. This study aims to determine the feasibility of including these two groups to increase coverage of the NDTRS and outlines preliminary steps for their inclusion.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

This action plan focuses on addressing the educational needs of children and young people from disadvantaged communities, from pre-school through second-level education (3 to18 years). Its frame of reference is based on the definition of “educational disadvantage” in the Education Act (1998) as: “...the impediments to education arising from social or economic disadvantage which prevent students from deriving appropriate benefit from education in schools.” The action plan is, therefore, one element of a continuum of interventions to address disadvantage, which include second-chance education and training and access measures for adults to support increased participation by under-represented groups in further and higher education. A further element of this continuum is the ongoing development of provision for pupils with special educational needs in light of the enactment of the Education for Persons with Special Needs Act (2004) and the establishment of the National Council for Special Education.

The Walking for Health programme was established in 2001 and continues to be an integral part of Government policy to address the health and wellbeing of the population in Northern Ireland. The programme is delivered through HSC Trusts across Northern Ireland and is supported by the Public Health Agency. Walking for Health aims to encourage inactive people to increase their level of physical activity by participating in local led health walks.
