Reaction Injection Moulding is a technology that enables the rapid production of complex plastic parts directly from a mixture of two reactive materials of low viscosity. The reactants are mixed in specific quantities and injected into a mould. This process allows large complex parts to be produced without the need for high clamping pressures. This chapter explores the simulation of the complex processes involved in reaction injection moulding. The reaction processes mean that the dynamics of the material in the mould are in constant evolution and an effective model which takes full account of these changing dynamics is introduced and incorporated in to finite element procedures, which are able to provide a complete simulation of the cycle of mould filling and subsequent curing.

Dental composites can be improved by heat treatment, as a possible way to increase mechanical properties due to additional cure (post-cure). Direct dental composites are essentially similar to the indirect ones, supposing they have the same indication. Therefore, to establish a heat treatment protocol for direct composites, using as indirect (photoactivated by continuous and pulse-delay techniques), a characterization (TG/DTG and DSC) is necessary to determine parameters, such as mass loss by thermal decomposition, heat of reaction and glass transition temperature (T (g)). By the results of this study, a heat treatment could be carried out above 160 A degrees C (above T (g), and even higher than the endset exothermic event) and under 180 A degrees C (temperature of significant initial mass loss).

CCSD(T) with a series of correlation consistent basis up to quadruple-zeta is used to investigate the structures, vibrational spectra, relative stability, heats of formation, and barrier to isomerization of S=SBr2 and BrSSBr. It represents the most accurate and detailed characterization of these molecules to date. We show that the frequency mode at 302 cm(-1), detected in various studies and assigned to impurities by some authors, and to the anti-symmetric SBr stretch in BrSSBr by others, thus in fact corresponds to the anti-symmetric SBr stretch in the elusive S=SBr2 species; it thus corroborates and complements an earlier partial IR spectra study attributable to S=SBr2. Including corrections for relativistic and core-valence correlation effects, we also predict 26.33 (12.74) kcal/mol for Delta H-f (298.15 K) of S=SBr2 (BrSSBr). For the S=SBr2 -> BrSSBr reaction, our best estimates for the Gibbs free energy and the enthalpy of the reaction at 298.15 K are -13.71 and -13.44 kcal/mol, respectively. For a value of Delta G(#) equal to 23.52 kcal/mol, we estimate a TST rate constant, at 298.15 K, of 3.57 x 10(-5) s(-1). (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An investigation of the parameters as aniline: MnO(2) and temperature on synthesis of polyaniline/MnO(2) composites was performed. The composites were chemically prepared in H(2)SO(4) media using different aniline: MnO(2) ratios at 0 degrees C. After the ratio optimization, the syntheses were performed at 20 degrees C. The polyaniline/MnO(2) composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible, near infrared and infrared spectroscopic techniques. Composites obtained with a uniform, homogeneous and thicker coating of polyaniline films under oxide was considered as the best condition for synthesis.

Microwave-assisted sample preparation using diluted nitric acid solutions is an alternative procedure for digesting organic samples. The efficiency of this procedure depends on the chemical properties of the samples and in this work it was evaluated by the determination of crude protein amount. fat and original carbon. Soybeans grains, bovine blood. bovine muscle and bovine viscera were digested in a cavity-microwave oven using oxidant mixtures in different acid concentrations. The digestion efficiency was evaluated based on the determination of residual carbon content and element recoveries using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). In order to determine the main residual organic compounds, the digests were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H NMR). Subsequently, studies concerning separation of nitrobenzoic acid isomers were performed by ion pair reversed phase liquid chromatography using a C18 stationary phase, water:acetonitrile:methanol (75:20:5, v/v/v) +0.05% (v/v) TFA as mobile phase and ultraviolet detection at 254 nm. Sample preparation based on diluted acids proved to be feasible and a recommendable alternative for organic sample digestion, reducing both the reagent volumes and the variability of the residues as a result of the process of decomposition. It was shown that biological matt-ices containing amino acids, proteins and lipids in their composition produced nitrobenzoic acid isomers and other organic compounds after cleavage of chemical bonds. The thermal properties of plums (Prunus domestica) and prunes were investigated in the moisture content of 14.2-80.4% (wet basis) near room temperature (approximately 28 degrees C). The apparent density of the fruits increased from 1042.9 to 1460.0 kg/m(3), and the bulk density increased from 706.6 to 897.5 kg/m(3) as the plums were dried, following classical empirical models as a function of moisture content. It was found that specific heat, effective thermal diffusivity, and effective thermal conductivity of the prunes increased with the moisture content of the samples, which can be represented by using different empirical models.

In this work particles of ZnO of size range 33-56 Angstrom were prepared by a sol-gel method. The effect of reaction time on the particle size of ZnO or ZnO:Ce was investigated by transmission electron microscopy measurements, UV-vis absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. A linear increase of the mean particle size is observed as a function of reaction time. The cerium-doped particles are bigger than the pure ZnO ones obtained at the same reaction time. A shift to lower energy at the maximum of the bands is observed in all absorption, emission and excitation spectra as a function of particle growth. From the absorption spectra the optical energy gap values (Eg) for these particles were determined. In the quantum size regime, Eg was found to decrease with particle growth.

Moisture equilibrium data of persimmon pulp powders with 50% maltodextrin (dry basis) obtained with different drying methods were determined at 20, 30, 40 and 50 degrees C. The spray-dryer gave a dry product with a higher adsorption capacity than the other methods. The vacuum- and freeze-dried products had the same adsorption capacity. The highest isosteric heat of sorption was observed for powders produced by spray-drying. The isokinetic temperature (T(B)) calculated for persimmon pulp powder obtained by vacuum-, spray- and freeze-drying were 541.4 K, 616.3 K, 513.2 K, respectively. The sorption process was spontaneous and enthalpy controlled.

We report clear finite size effects in the specific heat and in the relaxation times of a model glass former at temperatures considerably smaller than the Mode Coupling transition. A crucial ingredient to reach this result is a new Monte Carlo algorithm which allows us to reduce the relaxation time by two order of magnitudes. These effects signal the existence of a large correlation length in static quantities.
