The Mobile Cloud Networking project develops among others, several virtualized services and applications, in particular: (1) IP Multimedia Subsystem as a Service that gives the possibility to deploy a virtualized and on-demand instance of the IP Multimedia Subsystem platform, (2) Digital Signage Service as a Service that is based on a re-designed Digital Signage Service architecture, adopting the cloud computing principles, and (3) Information Centric Networking/Content Delivery Network as a Service that is used for distributing, caching and migrating content from other services. Possible designs for these virtualized services and applications have been identified and are being implemented. In particular, the architectures of the mentioned services were specified, adopting cloud computing principles, such as infrastructure sharing, elasticity, on-demand and pay-as-you-go. The benefits of Reactive Programming paradigm are presented in the context of Interactive Cloudified Digital Signage services in a Mobile Cloud Platform, as well as the benefit of interworking between different Mobile Cloud Networking Services as Digital Signage Service and Content Delivery Network Service for better performance of Video on Demand content deliver. Finally, the management of Service Level Agreements and the support of rating, charging and billing has also been considered and defined.

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 has been extensively studied over the past decades. Nevertheless, this topic has been tackled so far only by using a very fundamental approach and mostly by trying to improve kinetics and selectivities toward specific products in half-cell configurations and liquid-based electrolytes. The main drawback of this approach is that, due to the low solubility of CO2 in water, the maximum CO2 reduction current which could be drawn falls in the range of 0.01–0.02 A cm–2. This is at least an order of magnitude lower current density than the requirement to make CO2-electrolysis a technically and economically feasible option for transformation of CO2 into chemical feedstock or fuel thereby closing the CO2 cycle. This work attempts to give a short overview on the status of electrochemical CO2 reduction with respect to challenges at the electrolysis cell as well as at the catalyst level. We will critically discuss possible pathways to increase both operating current density and conversion efficiency in order to close the gap with established energy conversion technologies.

El objetivo principal del presente trabajo es estudiar y explotar estructuras que presentan un gas bidimensional de electrones (2DEG) basadas en compuestos nitruros con alto contenido de indio. Existen muchas preguntas abiertas, relacionadas con el nitruro de indio y sus aleaciones, algunas de las cuales se han abordado en este estudio. En particular, se han investigado temas relacionados con el análisis y la tecnología del material, tanto para el InN y heteroestructuras de InAl(Ga)N/GaN como para sus aplicaciones a dispositivos avanzados. Después de un análisis de la dependencia de las propiedades del InN con respecto a tratamientos de procesado de dispositivos (plasma y térmicos), el problema relacionado con la formación de un contacto rectificador es considerado. Concretamente, su dificultad es debida a la presencia de acumulación de electrones superficiales en la forma de un gas bidimensional de electrones, debido al pinning del nivel de Fermi. El uso de métodos electroquímicos, comparados con técnicas propias de la microelectrónica, ha ayudado para la realización de esta tarea. En particular, se ha conseguido lamodulación de la acumulación de electrones con éxito. En heteroestructuras como InAl(Ga)N/GaN, el gas bidimensional está presente en la intercara entre GaN y InAl(Ga)N, aunque no haya polarización externa (estructuras modo on). La tecnología relacionada con la fabricación de transistores de alta movilidad en modo off (E-mode) es investigada. Se utiliza un método de ataque húmedo mediante una solución de contenido alcalino, estudiando las modificaciones estructurales que sufre la barrera. En este sentido, la necesidad de un control preciso sobre el material atacado es fundamental para obtener una estructura recessed para aplicaciones a transistores, con densidad de defectos e inhomogeneidad mínimos. La dependencia de la velocidad de ataque de las propiedades de las muestras antes del tratamiento es observada y comentada. Se presentan también investigaciones relacionadas con las propiedades básicas del InN. Gracias al uso de una puerta a través de un electrolito, el desplazamiento de los picos obtenidos por espectroscopia Raman es correlacionado con una variación de la densidad de electrones superficiales. En lo que concierne la aplicación a dispositivos, debido al estado de la tecnología actual y a la calidad del material InN, todavía no apto para dispositivos, la tesis se enfoca a la aplicación de heteroestructuras de InAl(Ga)N/GaN. Gracias a las ventajas de una barrera muy fina, comparada con la tecnología de AlGaN/GaN, el uso de esta estructura es adecuado para aplicaciones que requieren una elevada sensibilidad, estando el canal 2DEG más cerca de la superficie. De hecho, la sensibilidad obtenida en sensores de pH es comparable al estado del arte en términos de variaciones de potencial superficial, y, debido al poco espesor de la barrera, la variación de la corriente con el pH puede ser medida sin necesidad de un electrodo de referencia externo. Además, estructuras fotoconductivas basadas en un gas bidimensional presentan alta ganancia debida al elevado campo eléctrico en la intercara, que induce una elevada fuerza de separación entre hueco y electrón generados por absorción de luz. El uso de metalizaciones de tipo Schottky (fotodiodos Schottky y metal-semiconductormetal) reduce la corriente de oscuridad, en comparación con los fotoconductores. Además, la barrera delgada aumenta la eficiencia de extracción de los portadores. En consecuencia, se obtiene ganancia en todos los dispositivos analizados basados en heteroestructuras de InAl(Ga)N/GaN. Aunque presentando fotoconductividad persistente (PPC), los dispositivos resultan más rápidos con respeto a los valores que se dan en la literatura acerca de PPC en sistemas fotoconductivos. ABSTRACT The main objective of the present work is to study and exploit the two-dimensionalelectron- gas (2DEG) structures based on In-related nitride compounds. Many open questions are analyzed. In particular, technology and material-related topics are the focus of interest regarding both InNmaterial and InAl(Ga)N/GaNheterostructures (HSs) as well as their application to advanced devices. After the analysis of the dependence of InN properties on processing treatments (plasma-based and thermal), the problemof electrical blocking behaviour is taken into consideration. In particular its difficulty is due to the presence of a surface electron accumulation (SEA) in the form of a 2DEG, due to Fermi level pinning. The use of electrochemical methods, compared to standard microelectronic techniques, helped in the successful realization of this task. In particular, reversible modulation of SEA is accomplished. In heterostructures such as InAl(Ga)N/GaN, the 2DEGis present at the interface between GaN and InAl(Ga)N even without an external bias (normally-on structures). The technology related to the fabrication of normally off (E-mode) high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) is investigated in heterostructures. An alkali-based wet-etching method is analysed, standing out the structural modifications the barrier underwent. The need of a precise control of the etched material is crucial, in this sense, to obtain a recessed structure for HEMT application with the lowest defect density and inhomogeneity. The dependence of the etch rate on the as-grown properties is observed and commented. Fundamental investigation related to InNis presented, related to the physics of this degeneratematerial. With the help of electrolyte gating (EG), the shift in Raman peaks is correlated to a variation in surface eletron density. As far as the application to device is concerned, due to the actual state of the technology and material quality of InN, not suitable for working devices yet, the focus is directed to the applications of InAl(Ga)N/GaN HSs. Due to the advantages of a very thin barrier layer, compared to standard AlGaN/GaN technology, the use of this structure is suitable for high sensitivity applications being the 2DEG channel closer to the surface. In fact, pH sensitivity obtained is comparable to the state-of-the-art in terms of surface potential variations, and, due to the ultrathin barrier, the current variation with pH can be recorded with no need of the external reference electrode. Moreover, 2DEG photoconductive structures present a high photoconductive gain duemostly to the high electric field at the interface,and hence a high separation strength of photogenerated electron and hole. The use of Schottky metallizations (Schottky photodiode and metal-semiconductor-metal) reduce the dark current, compared to photoconduction, and the thin barrier helps to increase the extraction efficiency. Gain is obtained in all the device structures investigated. The devices, even if they present persistent photoconductivity (PPC), resulted faster than the standard PPC related decay values.

Ternary Cu(Sb,Bi)S2 semiconductors are a group of materials with a wide variety of applications, especially photovoltaic. An analysis of the structural, electronic, and optical properties obtained from first-principles is presented. The microscopic justification of the high absorption coefficients is carried out by splitting the optical properties on chemical species contributions according to the symmetry. Focusing on photovoltaic applications, and from first-principles results, the efficiencies for several solar spectra are obtained as a function of the device thickness. This study indicates the great potential of these materials for photovoltaic and other optical devices.

Ternary molybdates and tungstates ABO4 (A=Ca, Pb and B= Mo, W) are a group of materials that could be used for a variety of optoelectronic applications. We present a study of the optoelectronic properties based on first-principles using several orbitaldependent one-electron potentials applied to several orbital subspaces. The optical properties are split into chemical-species contributions in order to quantify the microscopic contributions. Furthermore, the effect of using several one-electron potentials and orbital subspaces is analyzed. From the results, the larger contribution to the optical absorption comes from the B-O transitions. The possible use as multi-gap solar cell absorbents is analyzed.

Granulation is one of the fundamental operations in particulate processing and has a very ancient history and widespread use. Much fundamental particle science has occurred in the last two decades to help understand the underlying phenomena. Yet, until recently the development of granulation systems was mostly based on popular practice. The use of process systems approaches to the integrated understanding of these operations is providing improved insight into the complex nature of the processes. Improved mathematical representations, new solution techniques and the application of the models to industrial processes are yielding better designs, improved optimisation and tighter control of these systems. The parallel development of advanced instrumentation and the use of inferential approaches provide real-time access to system parameters necessary for improvements in operation. The use of advanced models to help develop real-time plant diagnostic systems provides further evidence of the utility of process system approaches to granulation processes. East-West trade has grown rapidly since the sixties, stimulating a parallel expansion in the literature on the subject. An extensive review of this literature shows how: (i) most of the issues involved have at their source the distinctions between East and West in political ideology and/or economic management, and (ii) there has been a tendency to keep theoretical and practical perspectives on the subject too separate. This thesis demonstrates the importance of understanding the fundamental principles implied in the first point, and represents an attempt to bridge the gap identified in the second. A detailed study of the market for fire fighting equipment in Eastern Europe is undertaken in collaboration with a medium-sized company, Angus Fire Armour Limited. Desk research methods are combined with visits to the market to assess the potential for the company's products, and recommendations for future strategy are made. The case demonstrates the scope and limitations of various research methods for the East European market, and a model for market research relevant to all companies is developed. Tne case study highlights three areas largely neglected in the literature: (i) the problems of internal company adaptation to East European conditions; (ii) the division of responsibility between foreign trade organisations; and (iii) bribery and corruption in East-West trade. Further research into the second topic - through a survey of 36 UK exporters - and the third - through analysis of publicised corruption cases - confirms the representativeness of the Angus experience, and reflects on the complexity of the Bast European import process, which does not always function as is commonly supposed. The very complexity of the problems confronting companies reaffirms the need to appreciate the principles underlying the subject, while the detailed analysis into questions of, originally, a marketing nature, reveals wider implications for East-West trade and East-West relations.

Manufacturing planning and control systems are fundamental to the successful operations of a manufacturing organisation. 10 order to improve their business performance, significant investment is made by companies into planning and control systems; however, not all companies realise the benefits sought Many companies continue to suffer from high levels of inventory, shortages, obsolete parts, poor resource utilisation and poor delivery performance. This thesis argues that the fit between the planning and control system and the manufacturing organisation is a crucial element of success. The design of appropriate control systems is, therefore, important. The different approaches to the design of manufacturing planning and control systems are investigated. It is concluded that there is no provision within these design methodologies to properly assess the impact of a proposed design on the manufacturing facility. Consequently, an understanding of how a new (or modified) planning and control system will perform in the context of the complete manufacturing system is unlikely to be gained until after the system has been implemented and is running. There are many modelling techniques available, however discrete-event simulation is unique in its ability to model the complex dynamics inherent in manufacturing systems, of which the planning and control system is an integral component. The existing application of simulation to manufacturing control system issues is limited: although operational issues are addressed, application to the more fundamental design of control systems is rarely, if at all, considered. The lack of a suitable simulation-based modelling tool does not help matters. The requirements of a simulation tool capable of modelling a host of different planning and control systems is presented. It is argued that only through the application of object-oriented principles can these extensive requirements be achieved. This thesis reports on the development of an extensible class library called WBS/Control, which is based on object-oriented principles and discrete-event simulation. The functionality, both current and future, offered by WBS/Control means that different planning and control systems can be modelled: not only the more standard implementations but also hybrid systems and new designs. The flexibility implicit in the development of WBS/Control supports its application to design and operational issues. WBS/Control wholly integrates with an existing manufacturing simulator to provide a more complete modelling environment.

This thesis presented a detailed research work on diamond materials. Chapter 1 is an overall introduction of the thesis. In the Chapter 2, the literature review on the physical, chemical, optical, mechanical, as well as other properties of diamond materials are summarised. Followed by this chapter, several advanced diamond growth and characterisation techniques used in experimental work are also introduced. Then, the successful installation and applications of chemical vapour deposition system was demonstrated in Chapter 4. Diamond growth on a variety of different substrates has been investigated such as on silicon, diamond-like carbon or silica fibres. In Chapter 5, the single crystalline diamond substrate was used as the substrate to perform femtosecond laser inscription. The results proved the potentially feasibility of this technique, which could be utilised in fabricating future biochemistry microfluidic channels on diamond substrates. In Chapter 6, the hydrogen-terminated nanodiamond powder was studied using impedance spectroscopy. Its intrinsic electrical properties and its thermal stability were presented and analysed in details. As the first PhD student within Nanoscience Research Group at Aston, my initial research work was focused on the installation and testing of the microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition system (MPECVD), which will be beneficial to all the future researchers in the group. The fundamental of the on MPECVD system will be introduced in details. After optimisation of the growth parameters, the uniform diamond deposition has been achieved with a good surface coverage and uniformity. Furthermore, one of the most significant contributions of this work is the successful pattern inscription on diamond substrates by femtosecond laser system. Previous research of femtosecond laser inscription on diamond was simple lines or dots, with little characterisation techniques were used. In my research work, the femtosecond laser has been successfully used to inscribe patterns on diamond substrate and fully characterisation techniques, e.g. by SEM, Raman, XPS, as well as AFM, have been carried out. After the femtosecond laser inscription, the depth of microfluidic channels on diamond film has been found to be 300~400 nm, with a graphitic layer thickness of 165~190 nm. Another important outcome of this work is the first time to characterise the electrical properties of hydrogenterminated nanodiamond with impedance spectroscopy. Based on the experimental evaluation and mathematic fitting, the resistance of hydrogen-terminated nanodiamond reduced to 0.25 MO, which were four orders of magnitude lower than untreated nanodiamond. Meanwhile, a theoretical equivalent circuit has been proposed to fit the results. Furthermore, the hydrogenterminated nanodiamond samples were annealed at different temperature to study its thermal stability. The XPS and FTIR results indicate that hydrogen-terminated nanodiamond will start to oxidize over 100ºC and the C-H bonds can survive up to 400ºC. This research work reports the fundamental electrical properties of hydrogen-terminated nanodiamond, which can be used in future applications in physical or chemical area.

It is a great pleasure to be Guest Editor for this issue – I hope that the papers which are included will be stimulating and support you in your ongoing research activities. A number of guiding principles were adopted in selecting the papers for inclusion in this issue. Firstly, the papers cover a wide range of logistics and supply chain management (SCM) topics. This is a reflection of the evolution of the field in recent years. In terms of the “buy-make-store-move-sell” model of SCM all the main constituent areas are addressed. Secondly, it is important that the conference issue of this Journal reflects the emphasis and content of the conference itself. I have tried to achieve this in terms of the papers included. One interesting point to note is that outsourcing is a theme which is a major issue in a number of papers. This reflects the increasing importance of this issue to organisations of all kinds and sizes. Economic globalisation and the trend towards vertical disintegration of supply chain architectures have sharpened the focus on outsourcing as a key element of supply chain strategy. The need to move beyond the notion that sourcing of certain activities can be some kind of panacea in evident from the relevant contributions. Thirdly, the LRN Annual Conference has become a more international event in recent years...the number of delegates and papers presented from outside the UK has continued to grow. The papers collected in this issue reflect this internationalization. Two papers are worthy of particular comment from an LRN perspective. The contribution by Jaafar and Rafiq has been developed from the submission which won the best paper prize at the LRN 2004 event. The paper by Pettit and Beresford is based on research which was supported by LRN seed corn funding. It was developed form the final report on this work submitted to CITL (UK) via the LRN. The seed corn funding is an important mechanism whereby the LRN supports research in innovative aspects of logistics in UK universities. In many ways, the LRN2004 event in Dublin seems like a long time ago. From my point of view it was one of the most professionally rewarding activities in which I have been involved in my career. It was a time to meet old friends and new and to keep abreast of the multitude of interesting projects being undertaken in over 20 countries. There are too many people to thank for the smooth running of the event. However, my colleague John Mee does warrant a special mention. His logistical skills were seriously put to the test in the weeks and months leading up to September 9th. 2004. I want to acknowledge his particular contribution to the success of the event. Since then we have had the 2005 event at the University of Plymouth. This was again a great opportunity to network with colleagues and many congratulations are due to John Dinwoodie and his team. We now look forward to LRN 2006 in Newcastle...form my part I hope and trust that this issue provides some useful perspectives and insights into the range of topics addressed.
