Iron (Fe) is essential for chlorophyll formation and plant growth. Irondeficiency chlorosis is a major nutritional disorder in several fruit trees cultivated in calcareous and alkaline soils, reducing fruit yield and quality and causing heavy economic losses. Since chelated Fe, the most widespread fertilizers used for preventing or curing Fe deficiency, pose risks of environmental pollution, the development of sustainable agronomic alternatives represents a priority for the fruit industry. In this work, we investigated the effectiveness of a bovine blood-derived product (BB; 0,125% Fe) for preventing Fe-deficiency in grapevine plants. During the vegetative season 2011 potted plants of five graft combinations: Sangiovese/S4O, Cabernet Sauvignon/S4O and Cabernet Sauvignon/140 Ruggeri, 140 Ruggeri/Cabernet Sauvignon, Vitis riparia/Cabernet Sauvignon were grown on calcareous soil. Soil treatments included: 1) Control; 2) Fe-EDDHA (Fe 6%); 3) Bovine-Blood (5 g/L); 4) Bovine-Blood (20 g/L). With the exception of Cabernet Sauvignon/S4O plants, Fe-EDDHA increased SPAD units (leaf chlorophyll content). Bovine-blood at low concentrations had similar or higher SPAD units than Fe-EDDHA. Increasing concentration resulted in further increases in SPAD units only in some graft combinations. Data highlight the efficiency of Fe blood-compound in the prevention of grapevine Fe-deficiency over one growing season.

The ground cover is an agricultural practice that is designed mainly to control weeds, while the nonwoven prevents the attack of pests. The objective of this study was to evaluate the yield and fruit quality of watermelon grown under nonwoven textile protection combined with plastic mulching. The experiment was conducted at the WG Fruits Company, Baraúna, RN. A randomized block design was used in a factorial 3 x 3 + 1 with four replications, and 36 plants per plot, with the first factor of color of plastic used in mulching (black, silver and white) and the second factor nonwoven textile with different times of use (first and third crop nonwoven under textile and without nonwoven) and an absolute control (no mulching and without nonwoven). The production variables evaluated were: yield (commercial, noncommercial, and total fruit yield), and fruit quality (soluble solids - SS, titratable acidity - TA and SS/TA). The use of mulching and protection of plants with nonwoven textile provided a higher yield of watermelon fruits in relation to bare soil with and without nonwoven textile protection. Fruit quality was not affected by the use of mulching and nonwoven.

The aim of this work was to determine crop coefficients (Kc) of drip irrigated watermelon in the climatic and growing conditions of the Gurgueia Vale, State of Piaui, Brazil, located at 8 ° 26' S, 43 ° 47' W and altitude of 251 m. The reference evapotranspiration (ET0) was determined by the sum of hourly values of ET0 obtained by the Penman-Monteith method parameterized by FAO with climatic data obtained from an automatic weather station. The daily crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was measured by three weighing lysimeters of load cells. Aiming high fruit yield in this region, we recommend that the following local values of Kc and Kcb be used for planning and management of irrigation, respectively: initial stage (crop establishment) - 0.34 and 0.24; intermediate stage (growth and fruit maturation) - 1.16 and 1.10; end stage (harvest) - 0.93 and 0.86. These Kc values of initial and intermediate phases are statistically higher than the values of Kc and Kcb already adjusted according to the methodology presented in the FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper 56. The values of Kc and Kcb at the end phase are not statistically different from the FAO values.

Yellow Sigatoka leaf spot, caused by Pseudocercospora musae (Mycosphaerella musicola), is one of main threats to banana production around the world. However, information regarding the infection process of P. musae and the influence of mineral nutrition on the disease severity could help with cultural control strategies and increase the fruit yield. Therefore, this work aimed to characterize the infectious process of P. musae in banana leaves, to study the effect of silicon (Si) and the interaction between potassium (K) and calcium (Ca) on the Yellow Sigatoka leaf spot severity. In the first study, samples were inoculated on the abaxial leaf surface with P. musae and analyzed at 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 168 hours after inoculation (HAI) as well as 36 and 50 days after inoculation (DAI). The conidia germinated between 24 and 36 HAI and penetrated through the stomata between 96 and 120 HAI, or usually from 144 HAI. P. musae colonized intercellularly the spongy parenchyma at 36 DAI and inter- and intracellularly the palisade parenchyma at 50 DAI. The sporulation occurred at 50 DAI on the adaxial leaf surfaces. In the second study, banana plants grown in nutrient solution with 0; 0.5; 1.0; 1.8 and 3.6 mmol L -1 of silicic acid (H 4SiO 4) were inoculated with conidial suspension. The disease severity was assessed and data were integrated in the area under the disease severity progress curve (AUDSPC). The lower AUDSPC was 49.27% for the concentration of 3.05 mmol L -1 of H 4SiO 4 compared to plants grown without Si addition. Regarding silicon accumulation, at 3.6 mmol L -1 H4SiO 4, leaf Si content was 23.53% higher compared to the control. In the third study, plants grown in nutrient solution with 5 K concentrations (1, 2, 4, 6, and, 8 mmol L -1 ) combined with 5 Ca concentrations (1, 3, 5, 7, and, 9 mmol L -1 ), forming 25 treatments, were inoculated with conidial suspension. The disease severity was assessed and the data were integrated in the AUDSPC. There was no interaction between concentrations of K and Ca for AUDSPC, although the AUDSPC increased with the increase of K concentrations from 1 to 6 mmol L -1 . The K increase led to a reduction in chlorophyll a and b contents and in the N, P, Mg, B, Cu, Zn, and, Mn nutrients as well as increased the total plant dry weight.
