In order to reduce the cost of Al-Sc alloys and maintain their mechanical properties, the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-0.24 wt% Sc-0.07 wt% Yb in comparison with Al-0.28 wt% Sc alloys were studied. The aging behaviour, precipitate morphologies, precipitate coarsening and precipitation hardening of both alloys were investigated. The average diameter and the size distribution of nanoscale Al3Sc and Al-3(Sc,Yb) precipitates at various aging conditions were measured. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM were used to deeply understand the precipitate evolution. A maximum hardness around 73 (HV30) was obtained with a precipitate diameter from 4.3 to 5.6 nm for both alloys. (c) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Multiple gingival recessions may cause mainly dentinary sensibility and aesthetic alterations. The subepithelial graft is a mucogingival technique which can be used to treat multiple gingival recessions. In this case report the Erbium YAG laser was applied to promote radicular surface decontamination, an important step to reach reinsertion of the gingival tissues on exposed radicular surface.

We report the first observation of photoluminescence enhancement in Er3+ doped GeO2-Bi2O3 glasses containing silicon nanocrystals (Si-NCs) excited by a laser operating at 980 nm. The growth of approximate to 200% in the intensity of the Er3+ transition S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) (545 nm) and of approximate to 100% for transitions H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2) (525 nm), F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2) (660 nm), and I-4(5/2) -> I-4(13/2) (1530 nm) was observed in comparison with a reference sample that does not contain Si-NCs. The results open a new road for obtaining efficient Stokes and anti-Stokes emissions in germanate composites doped with rare-earth ions.

The purpose of this study is to assess clinical and microbiologic effects of the non-surgical treatment of peri-implantitis lesions using either an erbium-doped:yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser or an air-abrasive subgingival polishing method.

We demonstrated all-fiber amplification of 11 ps pulses from a gain-switched laser diode at 1064 nm. The diode was driven at a repetition rate of 40 MHz and delivered 13 µW of fiber-coupled average output power. For the low output pulse energy of 325 fJ we have designed a multi-stage core pumped pre-amplifier in order to keep the contribution of undesired amplified spontaneous emission as low as possible. By using a novel time-domain approach for determining the power spectral density ratio (PSD) of signal to noise, we identified the optimal working point for our pre-amplifier. After the pre-amplifier we reduced the 40 MHz repetition rate to 1 MHz using a fiber coupled pulse-picker. The final amplification was done with a cladding pumped Yb-doped large mode area fiber and a subsequent Yb-doped rod-type fiber. With our setup we reached a total gain of 73 dB, resulting in pulse energies of >5.6 µJ and peak powers of >0.5 MW. The average PSD-ratio of signal to noise we determined to be 18/1 at the output of the final amplification stage.

A series of aluminum alloys containing additions of scandium, zirconium, and ytterbium were cast to evaluate the effect of partial ytterbium substitution for scandium on tensile behavior. Due to the high price of scandium, a crucible-melt interaction study was performed to ensure no scandium was lost in graphite, alumina, magnesia, or zirconia crucibles after holding a liquid Al-Sc master alloy for 8 hours at 900 °C in an argon atmosphere. The alloys were subjected to an isochronal aging treatment and tested for conductivity and Vickers microhardness after each increment. For scandium-containing alloys, peak hardnesses of 520-790 MPa, and peak tensile stresses of 138-234 MPa were observed after aging from 150-350 °C for 3 hours in increments of 50 °C, and for alloys without scandium, peak hardnesses of 217-335 MPa and peak tensile stresses of 45-63 MPa were observed after a 3 hour, 150 °C aging treatment. The hardness and tensile strength of the ytterbium containing alloy was found to be lower than in the alloy with no ytterbium substitution.

The molecular and ionic composition of vapor over erbium tribromide sublimed from the Knudsen effusion cell and the open surface of a single crystal was studied by high-temperature mass spectrometry. The partial pressures of ErBr3 and Er2Br6 molecules in saturated vapor and the ratio between their sublimation coefficients under free vaporization conditions were determined. The enthalpies and activation energies of sublimation of ErBr3 crystals in the form of monomers and dimers were calculated. The emission of and Er2 was recorded in studies of ionic sublimation in both modes. The enthalpies of formation of gas molecules and ions were determined.
