Objective: This paper aims to offer an overview of the mental health needs of Indigenous men and women in the criminal justice system and how Indigenous cultural perspectives on mental health might infl uence forensic mental health service provision.
Conclusion: There is a need for both mental health and criminal justice agencies to collaborate more closely in developing new models of service provision that incorporate Indigenous perspectives on social and emotional wellbeing, recognize culturally specifi c mental health risk and protective factors in relation to prevention, early intervention and treatment, and take advantage of the opportunities for treatment that arise in the context of criminal justice system intervention.

The early years of a child’s life are especially important, and the quality of those experiences set the scene for the future. Children’s first and most enduring bond is within their own family. However, a high proportion of young children in the Australia spend time as the responsibility of non-family adults within the many different types of early years settings.

The NQS outlines through Quality Area 5: Relationships with children, the need for educators to develop and maintain respectful and equitable relationships with each child. These relationships are brought about by educators and children forming trusting and reciprocal bonds where each child feels secure and included.

The Negative Life Events Scale (NLES) has been included in nationally representative surveys of the Indigenous and Australian population since 2002 as a measure of exposure to a range of 'life stressors'. There has been limited reporting or analysis of estimates of the NLES from these surveys. This paper reports changes in exposure to stressors from 2002 to 2008 for the Indigenous population, and examines inter-relationships between eleven NLES items. Data for the 2006 Australian population is also included for comparative purposes.

This study investigated associations between diet quality measures and quality of life two years later. Adults 55-65 years participating in the Wellbeing, Eating and Exercise for a Long Life (WELL) study in Victoria, Australia (n = 1150 men and n = 1307 women) completed a postal survey including a 111-item food frequency questionnaire in 2010. Diet quality in 2010 was assessed via the dietary guideline index (DGI), recommended food score (RFS) and Mediterranean diet score (MDS). The RAND 36-item survey assessed health-related quality of life in 2012. Associations were assessed using logistic regression adjusted for covariates. In men, DGI and RFS were associated with better reported energy (OR = 1.79, CI: 1.25, 2.55 and OR = 1.56, CI: 1.11, 2.19 respectively), and DGI was additionally associated with better general health (OR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.08, 2.20), and overall mental component summary scale (OR = 1.51, CI: 1.07, 2.15) in the fully adjusted model. In women, associations between two indices of diet quality (DGI, RFS) physical function (OR = 1.66, CI: 1.19, 2.31 and OR = 1.70, CI: 1.21, 2.37 respectively) and general health (OR = 1.83, CI: 1.32, 2.54 and OR = 1.54, CI: 1.11, 2.14 respectively) were observed. DGI was also associated with overall physical component summary score (OR = 1.56, CI: 1.12, 2.17). Additional associations between emotional wellbeing and DGI (OR = 1.40, CI: 1.01, 1.93) and RFS (OR = 1.44, CI: 1.04, 1.99), and MDS and energy (OR = 1.53, CI: 1.11, 2.10) were observed in the fully adjusted model, in women only. Older adults with better quality diets report better health-related quality of life, with additional associations with emotional wellbeing observed in women.

INTRODUÇÃO: A doença de Parkinson (DP) é caracterizada por uma degeneração progressiva seletiva de neurônios localizados na pars compacta da substância negra. Ela compõe-se por um conjunto de quatro sintomas motores: tremor, rigidez, bradicinesia e instabilidade postural. OBJETIVO: O estudo objetivou investigar os fatores relacionados à queda na percepção da qualidade de vida de indivíduos com DP. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Participaram deste estudo 25 indivíduos com diagnóstico de doença de Parkinson, classificados entre os estágios um e cinco da escala de estadiamento de Hoen e Yahr, tendo a sua qualidade de vida avaliada segundo o Parkinson Disease Questionary-39 (PDQ-39). RESULTADOS: Os 25 indivíduos (12 homens e 13 mulheres) apresentaram idade média de 71,2 ± 8,5 anos, variando entre 53 a 85 anos, e tempo de evolução da doença de 6,54 ± 7,71, variando entre 1 e 39 anos de doença. Verificou-se que as piores percepções sobre a qualidade de vida estão relacionadas ao domínio mobilidade, com média de 55% de comprometimento, e ao domínio atividade de vida diária, com 52,78% de comprometimento. Ficou também constatada uma alta correlação entre o escore total do PDQ-39 com os domínios atividade de vida diária, bem-estar emocional e mobilidade. CONCLUSÕES: A partir dos resultados obtidos, é possível constatar que carências de origem motora associadas aos sinais e sintomas e às complicações secundárias da DP interferem negativamente sobre a percepção da qualidade de vida dos indivíduos.

From the very first moment of entrance in sports up to the time of their successful achievements, parents have a pronounced influence on the sport's career of their children. This influence is readily seen when the parent's dedicated involvement and investment, both emotional and financial, put into the support they give to their children in sports is taken into account. This is all done with the objective that their young athlete may stay involved and reach their full potential. To describe the parental support in the context of Brazilian Artistic Gymnastics in formative categories, this study addressed the perceptions that young gymnasts have toward the behavior and attitude of their parents through a field research conducted among 29 sport institutions involving a total of 163 athletes. We have found that parental support enabled and greatly influenced the child's entering into sports, their access to the practice of a sport, their level of participation, their degree of involvement, and their physical and emotional wellbeing. Moreover, the parental support is crucial to the commitment and dedication of the young gymnast. However, when this support is perceived in a negative way it can result in stress, conflicts between parents and children, burnout and may provoke dropout.

Introducción El tema de este Trabajo Fin de Grado, TFG a partir de ahora, no es otro que el motivar al usuario final a hacer ejercicio mediante la realización de ejercicios breves e intensos. Para ello, surge la idea de desarrollar una aplicación para la plataforma Android, de nombre AndroFIT , cuyo objetivo es cumplir con la meta descrita anteriormente; que el usuario haga ejercicio de manera diaria. Hacer ejercicio es un hábito saludable que ayuda en gran medida al bienestar físico, mental y emocional de las personas. Sin embargo, no es un hábito practicado por una cantidad inmensa de gente y más pequeño es aún el número de personas que son constantes. Si empezar a hacer ejercicio es complicado, mantener el ritmo, la dedicación y la motivación a medida que pasa el tiempo es más difícil todavía. Los motivos del abandono son de distinta índole: falta de tiempo, falta de ganas, falta de apoyo o incluso el alcanzar la figura y/o el peso que se buscaban. AndroFIT no pretende ser una aplicación más en el mercado de las aplicaciones Health & Fitness, el cual ya dispone de una larga lista de aplicaciones asentadas y reconocidas a nivel mundial como por ejemplo Endomondo o Runtastic, entre otras. Esta aplicación se rige por principios más cercanos a un juego gracias a los principios de gamificación que se han implantado en la aplicación, como los logros y la diversión, entre otros. Este TFG es el primer prototipo funcional de un proyecto de carácter personal cuyo diseño, análisis, desarrollo y mantenimiento han sido llevados a cabo por mí, Abraham Hernández Valencia. Es una aplicación que dista mucho de su versión definitiva y cuya funcionalidad es limitada. En futuras versiones se añadirán funcionalidades y características, que serán descritas en esta memoria, como por ejemplo compartir los resultados en Facebook y Twitter, utilizar la biblioteca de música del usuario así como su perfil en Spotify para personalizar aún más la experiencia o la posibilidad de ejercitar una parte concreta del cuerpo a través de ejercicios específicamente diseñados para esa zona. Abstract The goal of this Degree Project is no other than to motivate users to exercise on a regular basis through short and intense routines. Therefore, an Android application named AndroFIT is developed, which purpose is it to fulfil the goal previously described; encourage daily exercising among users. To work out is a healthy habit which enormously helps physical, psychical and emotional wellbeing of people. However, it is not a trend with a large number of followers and that same number is even smaller if we focus on regular working out. Starting to work out is always challenging but keeping the rhythm, motivation and dedication high all along is even more difficult. Reasons of abandoning vary: lack of time, lack of motivation, lack of support or even not reaching the desired shape or weight. AndroFIT does not aim to be another application inside of the Health & Fitness market, which already has a long list of successful and worldknown applications such as Endomondo and Runtastic. AndroFIT´s principles such as achievements and fun, strictly taken from gamification techniques, make the application appeal more to a game rather than to a fitness application. This project is the first functional prototype of a personal project which design, analysis, development and maintenance have been taken care of by me, Abraham Hernández Valencia. This release is far away from the final one and its functionality is limited. Future versions will include enhanced functionality and extra features which will be described later in this document, like Facebook and Twitter sharing, using the user's music library as well as his Spotify profile to have an even deeper customised experience or being able to train a specific part of the body following a serie of specific designed workouts.

Latino family involvement is an important issue in the field of education. Effective strategies to promote family involvement in the Latino community are vital for the educational attainment of Latino students and emotional wellbeing of Latino families. This study used focus groups, in-depth interviews, and observations to examine Latino family involvement and the relationships and communication patterns between Latina mothers and daughters. The Latina mother-daughter relationship was studied in an effort to gain a better understanding of how this relationship affects a Latina daughter's educational attainment and sense of resiliency. Results indicated that a positive relationship between a Latina mother and daughter can increase a Latina daughter's level of educational attainment and sense of resiliency. Additionally, a Latina daughter's level of self-motivation can affect her level of educational attainment as well. Cultural narratives were found to be a common type of communication pattern used between Latina mothers and daughters. They were used to teach cultural values, life lessons, and experiential learning. By improving family involvement efforts within the Latino culture, Latino students will likely see drastic improvements in their overall levels of educational attainment and emotional wellbeing in schools. Implications for Latino students and families, schools that work with Latino families, and educational policy are also discussed.

The purpose of the current dissertation is to identify the features of effective interventions by exploring the experiences of youth with ASD who participate in such interventions, through two intervention studies (Studies 1 and 2) and one interview study (Study 3). Studies 1 and 2 were designed to support the development of social competence of youth with ASD through Structured Play with LEGO TM (Study 1, 12 youths with ASD, ages 7–12) and Minecraft TM (Study 2, 4 youths with ASD, ages 11–13). Over the course of the sessions, the play of the youth developed from parallel play (children playing alone, without interacting) to co-operative play (playing together with shared objectives). The results of Study 2 showed that rates of initiations and levels of engagement increased from the first session to the final session. In Study 3, 12 youths with ASD (ages 10–14) and at least one of their parents were interviewed to explore what children and their parents want from programs designed to improve social competence, which activities and practices were perceived to promote social competence by the participants, and which factors affected their decisions regarding these programs. The adolescents and parents looked for programs that supported social development and emotional wellbeing, but did not always have access to the programs they would have preferred, with factors such as cost and location reducing their options. Three overarching themes emerged through analysis of the three studies: (a) interests of the youth; (b) structure, both through interactions and instruction; and (c) naturalistic settings. Adolescents generally engage more willingly in interventions that incorporate their interests, such as play with Minecraft TM in Study 2. Additionally, Structured Play and structured instruction were crucial components of providing safe and supportive contexts for the development of social competence. Finally, skills learned in naturalistic settings tend to be applied more successfully in everyday situations. The themes are analysed through the lens of Vygotsky’s (1978) perspectives on learning, play, and development. Implications of the results for practitioners and researchers are discussed.

AIMS: To investigate the contribution of general and diabetes-specific emotional wellbeing and beliefs about medicines in the prediction of insulin therapy appraisals in adults with non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes. METHODS: The sample included Diabetes MILES-Australia cross-sectional survey participants whose primary diabetes treatment was oral hypoglycaemic agents (N=313; 49% women; mean±SD age: 57±9 years; diabetes duration: 7±6 years). They completed validated measures of beliefs about the 'harm' and 'overuse' of medications in general (BMQ General); 'concerns' about and 'necessity' of current diabetes medications (BMQ Specific); negative insulin therapy appraisals (ITAS); depression (PHQ-9); anxiety (GAD-7), and diabetes distress (DDS-17). Factors associated with ITAS Negative scores were examined using hierarchical multiple regressions. RESULTS: Twenty-two percent of the variance in ITAS Negative scores (52±10), was explained by: number of complications (β=-.15, p=.005), DDS-17 subscale 'emotional burden' (β=.23, p<.001), and 'concerns' about current diabetes treatment (β=.29, p<.001). General beliefs about medications and general emotional wellbeing did not contribute significantly to the model. CONCLUSIONS: Psychological insulin resistance may reflect broader distress about diabetes and concerns about its treatment but not general beliefs about medicines, depression or anxiety. Reducing diabetes distress and current treatment concerns may improve attitudes towards insulin as a potential therapeutic option.

Study found that the assessments used were reliable and acceptable culturally for Malaysian children with Down Syndrome, with some changes on Parent Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. To identify specific difficulties with motor movement, level of involvement in the learning process, and socio-emotional wellbeing, the use of accurate assessment tools were crucial among health care teams, especially Occupational Therapist in Malaysia.

AIMS: To determine 'hypothetical willingness' to initiate insulin, and identify associated factors, among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in primary care for whom insulin is clinically indicated.

METHODS: Eligible participants were adults with T2DM with an HbA1c ≥7.5% (58mmol/mol) and prescribed maximum oral hypoglycaemic agents. A total of 261 participants were recruited from 74 Victorian general practices: mean age 62±10 years; 39% (n=103) women; diabetes duration 10±6 years; HbA1c 9.0±1.3% (75±14mmol/mol). Data collected by the Stepping Up Study: demographic and clinical characteristics, 'willingness' to initiate insulin, insulin appraisals, depressive symptoms, and diabetes-related distress. A multinomial regression investigated predictors of 'willingness'.

RESULTS: Nineteen percent (n=50) were 'very willing' to initiate insulin, if recommended. The final regression model (R(2)=.44, χ(2)(12) 145.91, p<.001) demonstrated higher socioeconomic status and less negative attitudes to insulin were associated with increased willingness to initiate insulin.

CONCLUSIONS: Among adults with T2DM for whom insulin is clinically indicated, only one in five are 'very willing' to begin insulin therapy. Independent of demographics, clinical factors and emotional wellbeing, insulin appraisals were associated with 'willingness'. This study highlights the importance of addressing attitudinal barriers to insulin therapy among adults with T2DM in primary care to improve insulin receptiveness.
