The dielectric strength of films made from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) coated with a thin layer of polyaniline (PANI) was studied. The PANI layer was deposited on the PET films by the 'in situ' chemical polymerization method. The PANI layer of the PANI/PET films was undoped in NH4OH 0.1 M solution and re-doped with aqueous HCl solution under different pH values varying from 1 to 10. Electric breakdown measurements were performed by applying a voltage ramp and the results showed a dependence of the dielectric strength on the pH of the doping solution due to the changes in the electrical conductivity of the PANI layer. The dielectric strength of PET/PANI films treated under higher pH conditions showed an electric strength about 30% larger than the PET films, since it leads to a non-conductive PANI layer.

Space-charge-limited currents measurements have been carried out on undoped amorphous poly p-phenylene sulfide. The scaling law is checked for different samples with varying thickness, and J-V data analyzed. The position of the quasi-Fermi level and the density of states was obtained.

Euphorbia tirucalli Lineu (Aveloz) belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae and is used in the treatment of cancer and warts. Some studies have reported that phorbol esters are the active principles responsible for the antitumor activity of Aveloz. The production of these molecules occurs in greater quantity in May, during the morning. This study aimed to evaluate whether the physico-chemical parameters of Aveloz homeopathic aqueous solutions such as pH, electrical conductivity and refractive index change due to storage time. Such parameters were measured regularly for 180 days. All solutions were prepared according to the method of grinding with lactose and subsequent dissolution in aqueous medium, as described in the Brazilian Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia, using as starting point the Aveloz latex collected in May. Homeopathic aqueous solutions containing only lactose were also prepared and evaluated as a control group. The potencies that were analyzed for electrical conductivity, pH and refractive index were: 4cH, 7cH, 9cH, 12cH, 14cH, 15cH, 29cH, 30cH. As a result, we found out that there was only statistical difference (p=0.035) in electrical conductivity between the homeopathic solutions containing Aveloz and the homeopathic solutions without Aveloz, when 15cH potency was compared. We also observed that the electrical conductivity increased with the aging of the solutions but is not directly related to the pH or the refractive index of the solutions, indicating that the aging process may alter the electrical conductivity of the homeopathic medicines. The presence of gas inside the glass that stores these solutions may affect the electrical conductivity measurements. Finally, no statistically significant difference was observed (p> 0.05) in the pH and refractive index.

The quality and the profitability on floriculture are intimately linked to the adequate plant nutrition. In the present research we aimed to evaluate the electrical conductivity (EC) and pH of the substrate solution on four different gerbera cultivars subjected to fertigation, with two nutritive solutions. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, from May to July 2006, on the Universidade Estadual Paulista, Botucatu, São Paulo state, Brazil. The experiment was carried out under an experimental design of random blocks, in 4×2 factorial arrangement, with four Gerbera cultivars (Cherry, Golden Yellow, Salmon Rose and Orange) and two nutritive solution concentrations: 0.92 and 1.76 dS m-1 EC) during the vegetative stage, and 1.07 and 2.04 dS m-1 during the reproductive stage (S1 and S2, respectively). The nutrients were applied through fertigation, manually performed every day. The EC and pH values of the substrate solution were evaluated weekly, using the 'pourthru' method. Orange and Cherry cultivars had, respectively, the highest and the lowest electrical conductivity of the substrate solution, and Cherry was the most efficient on the nutrient uptake. The solution S2 showed a trend to accumulate salts in the substrate, but without visual symptoms of plant toxicity, leading to the lowest pH values. The 'pourthru' method was efficient when compared to the 1:2 method and can be adopted for substrate solution analysis in gerbera culture.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, has been blended with different ionic liquids (IL) in order to evaluate the effect of the different IL anions and cations on the electroative -phase, thermal, mechanical and electrical properties of the polymer blend. [C2MIM][Cl], [C6MIM][Cl], [C10MIM][Cl], [C2MIM][NTf2], [C6MIM][NTf2], [C10MIM][NTf2] have been selected and were introduced in the polymer at a weight percentage of 40 wt%. It was found that the incorporation of ILs into the PVDF matrix leads to an increase of the -phase content due to the strong electrostatic interactions between the dipolar moments of PVDF and the ILs. Further, the incorporation of ILs into PVDF strongly decreases the elastic modulus and increases the electrical conductivity of the blend with respect to the pure polymer matrix, all these effects being accompanied by a modification of the crystallization kinetics, as indicated by the modified spherulitic microstructure. Thus, novel PVDF/IL blends films with high transparency, excellent antistatic properties, and highly polar crystal form fraction were successfully achieved.

The crystallization kinetics of each constituent of poly(p-dioxanone)-b-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) diblock copolymers (PPDX-b-PCL) has been determined in a wide composition range by differential scanning calorimetry and compared to that of the equivalent homopolymers. Spherulitic growth rates were also measured by polarized optical microscopy while atomic force microscopy was employed to reveal the morphology of one selected diblock copolymer. It was found that crystallization drives structure formation and both components form lamellae within mixed spherulitic superstructures. The overall isothermal crystallization kinetics of the PPDX block at high temperatures, where the PCL is molten, was determined by accelerating the kinetics through a previous self-nucleation procedure. The application of the Lauritzen and Ho. man theory to overall growth rate data yielded successful results for PPDX and the diblock copolymers. The theory was applied to isothermal overall crystallization of previously self-nucleated PPDX ( where growth should be the dominant factor if self-nucleation was effective) and the energetic parameters obtained were perfectly matched with those obtained from spherulitic growth rate data of neat PPDX. A quantitative estimate of the increase in the energy barrier for crystallization of the PPDX block, caused by the covalently bonded molten PCL as compared to homo-PPDX, was thus determined. This energy increase can dramatically reduce the crystallization rate of the PPDX block as compared to homo-PPDX. In the case of the PCL block, both the crystallization kinetics and the self-nucleation results indicate that the PPDX is able to nucleate the PCL within the copolymers and heterogeneous nucleation is always present regardless of composition. Finally, preliminary results on hydrolytic degradation showed that the presence of relatively small amounts of PCL within PPDX-bPCL copolymers substantially retards hydrolytic degradation of the material in comparison to homo-PPDX. This increased resistance to hydrolysis is a complex function of composition and its knowledge may allow future prediction of the lifetime of the material for biomedical applications.

Despite the great importance of ion transport, most of the widely accepted models and theories are valid only in the not very practical limit of low concentrations. Aiming to extend the range of applicability to moderate concentrations, a number of modified models and equations (some approximate, some fundamented on different assumptions, and some just empirical) have been reported. In this work, a general treatment for the electrical conductivity of ionic solutions has been developed, considering the electrical conductivity as a transport phenomenon governed by dissipation and feedback. A general expression for the dependence of the specific conductivity on the solution viscosity (and indirectly on concentration), from which the whole conductivity curve can be obtained, has been derived. The validity of this general approach is demonstrated with experimental results taken from the literature for aqueous and nonaqueous solutions of electrolytes.

The effect of the Sb addition on the microstructural and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film was studied in this work. Experimental results show that the Sb addition allowed to control the grain size and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film, resulting in a nanostructured material. The nanostructured Sb-doped SnO2 thin films present high electrical conductivity, even in the presence of high porosity, supporting the hypothesis that nanostructured material must possess strong electrical conductivity. Zusammenfassung Das 2,7-Polyfluoren (2,7-PF) wurde in neuer Zeit sowohl wegen seiner einfachen Synthese und hohen Fluoreszenzquantenausbeuten als auch seiner chemischen und thermischen Stabilität intensiv untersucht. Leider liegt das Emissionsmaximum von 2,7-PF in einem Bereich, bei dem das menschliche Auge nicht genügend Sensitivität aufweist. Das Leiter-Poly(p-phenylen) (LPPP) besitzt die optimale Wellenlänge. Jedoch zeigt das LPPP wegen seines steifen Rückgrates große Aggregationstendenz im Film auf, wodurch die Emissionsfarbe bathochrom verschoben und die Photolumineszenzquantenausbeute verringert wird. Es ist deshalb wünschenswert, Polymere zu synthetisieren, die eine längerwellige Emissionsbande als 2,7-PF und eine geringere Aggregationstendenz als LPPP 20 besitzen. Eine Reihe neuer blau emittierender Polymere auf der Basis von Indenofluoren- und Fluoren-Bausteinen mit geringer Aggregationstendenz, hoher thermischer und chemischer Stabilität sowie guter Verarbeitbarkeit wurden dargestellt. Die Polymere weisen eine hohe thermische Stabilität auf (Zersetzung ca.: 310 °C) und sind sehr gut löslich in organischen Lösungsmitteln. Das Absorptionsmaximum des 2,8-Polyindenofluoren (2,8-PIF) in Chloroform liegt bei 416 nm, das Emissionsmaximun bei 432 nm. Die Phasenumwandlungstemperatur beim PIF liegt ca. bei 260 °C. Leider zeigen 2,8-PIF Aggregationstendenzen im Film. Um die Aggregation komplett zu unterbinden, wurden Polyphenylene als Seitenketten an das Dibromfluoren angebracht. Anschließend wurde nach Yamamoto polymerisiert. Das dendritnische PF (DPF) weist die gleiche thermische Stabilität wie die PIFs 28 auf (Zersetzung: 340 °C). Das Polymer 62a ist sehr gut löslich in Toluol, Xylol und chlorierten organischen Lösungsmitteln. Die Absorptions- und Emissionsmaxima des DPFs in Lösung (Chloroform) weisen keine Veränderung gegenüber PF auf. Die Emissionsmaxima des DPFs im Film und nach dem Tempern (100 °C, 24 h) zeigen lediglich eine Verschiebung um 8 nm. Eine Aggregatenbande entsteht jedoch nicht. Dies unterstreicht die abschirmende Eigenschaft der dendritischen Substituenten. Durch Copolymerisation lassen sich die Eigenschaften von Polymeren variieren. Um die Aggregationstendenz der PIF-Derivate zu verringern, wurden die entsprechenden Monomere in verschiedenen Verhältnissen copolymerisiert. Durch die Copolymerisation wurde die PL-Quantenausbeute auf 50 % erhöht. Weiterhin wurden Copolymere von Indenofluoren und 9,10-Dibromanthracen, und erschiedenen Perylenen hergestellt, um zu blau, rot und grün emittierenden Polymeren zu gelangen. Alle blau emittierenden Polymeren wurden in Leuchtdioden untersucht. Das DPF und das Copolymer aus Indenofluoren und Anthracene wiesen die besten Eigenschaften hierfür auf.

Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die Entwicklung einer neuartigen Synthesestrategie von π-konjugierten Plasmapolymeren durch die Anwendung von vorstrukturierten aromatischen Precursoren und gepulsten Niederdruckplasmen. Es gelang erstmals die strukturtreue Synthese von π-konjugierten organischen Plasmapolymeren mit dem vollkommenen Erhalt der aromatischen Funktionalität und der selektiven para-Verknüpfung aromatischer Einheiten durch geeignete Heteroatome. Hierbei kamen 1,4-Dithiophenol zur Synthese von Plasmapoly(p-phenylensulfid) und 4-Iodanilin zur Synthese von Plasmapolyanilin zur Anwendung. Die mit hoher Präzision abgeschiedenen Filme konnten sowohl postsynthetisch als auch in situ p-dotiert werden. Die chemischen Strukturen sowie deren physikalisch-chemischen Eigenschaften konnten vor allem mittels Röntgenphotoelektronen-, UV-VIS-NIR-, IR-, NMR-, ESR- und Impedanz-Spektroskopie aufgeklärt werden. Die synthetisierten dotierten Plasmapolymere zeigten eindeutig ohmsche Leistungsmechanismen, teilweise mit einer Leitfähigkeitserhöhung von bis zu 8 Dekaden gegenüber dem undotierten konventionellen Polymer.

The importance of interface effects for organic devices has long been recognized, but getting detailed knowledge of the extent of such effects remains a major challenge because of the difficulty in distinguishing from bulk effects. This paper addresses the interface effects on the emission efficiency of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), by producing layer-by-layer (LBL) films of PPV alternated with dodecylbenzenesulfonate. Films with thickness varying from similar to 15 to 225 nm had the structural defects controlled empirically by converting the films at two temperatures, 110 and 230 degrees C, while the optical properties were characterized by using optical absorption, photoluminescence (PL), and photoluminescence excitation spectra. Blueshifts in the absorption and PL spectra for LBL films with less than 25 bilayers (<40-50 nm) pointed to a larger number of PPV segments with low conjugation degree, regardless of the conversion temperature. For these thin films, the mean free-path for diffusion of photoexcited carriers decreased, and energy transfer may have been hampered owing to the low mobility of the excited carriers. The emission efficiency was then found to depend on the concentration of structural defects, i.e., on the conversion temperature. For thick films with more than 25 bilayers, on the other hand, the PL signal did not depend on the PPV conversion temperature. We also checked that the interface effects were not caused by waveguiding properties of the excited light. Overall, the electronic states at the interface were more localized, and this applied to film thickness of up to 40-50 nm. Because this is a typical film thickness in devices, the implication from the findings here is that interface phenomena should be a primary concern for the design of any organic device. Relations between the apparent electrical conductivity of the soil (ECa) and top- and sub-soil physical properties were examined for two arable fields in southern England (Crowmarsh Battle Farms and the Yattendon Estate). The spatial variation of ECa and the soil properties was explored geostatistically. The variogram ranges showed that ECa varied on a similar spatial scale to many of the soil physical properties in both fields. Several features in the map of kriged predictions of ECa were also evident in maps of the soil properties. In addition, the correlation coefficients showed a strong relation between ECa and several soil properties. A moving correlation analysis enabled differences in the relations between ECa and the soil properties to be examined within the fields. The results indicated that relations were inconsistent; they were stronger in some areas than others. A regression of ECa on the principal component scores of the leading components for both fields showed that the first two components accounted for a large proportion of the variance in ECa, whereas the others accounted for little or none. For Crowmarsh topsoil sand and clay, loss on ignition and volumetric water measured in the autumn had large correlations on the first component, and for Yattendon they were large for topsoil sand and clay, and autumn and spring volumetric water. The cross-variograms suggested strong coregionalization between ECa and several soil physical properties; in particular subsoil sand and silt at Crowmarsh, and subsoil sand and clay at Yattendon. The structural correlations from the linear model of coregionalization confirmed the strength of the relations between ECa and the subsoil properties. Nevertheless, no one property was consistently important for both fields. Although a map of ECa can indicate the general patterns of spatial variation in the soil, it is not a substitute for information on soil properties obtained by sampling and analysing the soil.
