We present a compact solid-state laser based on leaky mode propagation from a dye-doped polymer free-standing film waveguide. The edge emitted spectrum clearly indicated the existence of periodic resonant modes. The reflections from the lateral faces of the free-standing film provided the optical feedback thus giving rise to a Fabry–Perot like optical cavity. This together with the guidance through the gain medium gave rise to intense narrow emission lines. For a pump energy of 1.82 mJ/pulse, an intense line with FWHM ∼0.4 nmwas observed at 576.5 nm.

We report observations and measurements of the inscription of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in two different types of microstructured polymer optical fiber: few-mode and an endlessly single mode. Contrary to the FBG inscription in silica microstructured fiber, where high-energy laser pulses are a prerequisite, we have successfully used a low-power cw laser source operating at 325 nm to produce 1 cm long gratings with a reflection peak at 1570 nm. Peak reflectivities of more than 10% have been observed. © 2005 Optical Society of America.

We report the fabrication and characterization of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with 870 nm resonance wavelength in a single-mode TOPAS microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF). The grating has been UV-written with the phasemask technique using a 325 nm HeCd laser. The static tensile strain sensitivity has been measured as 0.64 pm/µstrain, and the temperature sensitivity was -60 pm/°C. This is the first 870nm FBG and the first demonstration of a negative temperature response for the TOPAS FBG, for which earlier results have indicated a positive temperature response. The relatively low material loss of the fiber at this wavelength compared to that at longer wavelengths will considerably enhance the potential utility of the TOPAS FBG.

The transmission loss in polymer optical fiber (POF) is much higher than that in silica fiber. Very strong absorption bands dominate throughout the visible and near infrared. Optical absorption increases the internal temperature of the polymer fiber and reduces the wavelength of any POF Bragg grating (POFBG) inscribed within the fiber. In this letter, we have investigated the wavelength drift of FBGs inscribed in poly(methyl methacrylate)-based fiber under illumination at different wavelengths. The experiments have shown that the characteristic wavelength of such a POFBG starts decreasing after a light source is applied to it. This decrease continues until equilibrium inside the fiber is established, depending on the surrounding humidity, optical power applied, and operation wavelength.

A novel and highly sensitive liquid level sensor based on a polymer optical fiber Bragg grating (POFBG) is reported for the first time. The sensitivity of the sensor is found to be 57 pm/cm of liquid, enhanced by more than a factor of 5 when compared to an equivalent sensor based on silica fiber. © 2015 OSA.

A systematic study of annealing behavior of drawn PMMA fibers was performed. Annealing dynamics were investigated under different environmental conditions by fiber longitudinal shrinkage monitoring. The shrinkage process was found to follow a stretched exponential decay function revealing the heterogeneous nature of the underlying molecular dynamics. The complex dependence of the fiber shrinkage on initial degree of molecular alignment in the fiber, annealing time and temperature was investigated and interpreted. Moreover, humidity was shown to have a profound effect on the annealing process, which was not recognized previously. Annealing was also shown to have considerable effect on the fiber mechanical properties associated with the relaxation of molecular alignment in the fiber. The consequences of fiber annealing for the climatic stability of certain polymer optical fiber-based sensors are discussed, emphasizing the importance of fiber controlled pre-annealing with respect to the foreseeable operating conditions.

Infrared light-emitting diodes possess potential applications in optical communication and safety detection. in this paper, we fabricated near-infrared light-emitting diodes possess potential applications in optical communication and safety detection. in this paper, we fabricated near-infrared polymer light-emitting diode employing a commercial near-infrared (NIR) organic dye as an emissive dopant dispersed within poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) by spin-casting method. The used device structure was indium tin oxide/3,4-polyethylene-dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate/PVK: NIR dye/Al.

The optical properties of zirconia films doped with rhodamine 6G and oxazine 725 by the sol-gel process were investigated using spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). Accurate refractive index n and the extinction coefficient k were determined using a three-oscillator classical Lorentz model in the wavelength range of 300-800 nm. The derived refractive index of dye-doped films exhibited anomalous dispersion in the absorption region. Wavelength tunable output lasing action yellow and near-infrared wavelength region was achieved by DFB configuration using zirconia films doped with R6G and oxazine 725. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
